DELORES CONLEY 71, former long time resident of Anthon passed away in a Sioux City hospital on December 30, 2002. Services were held Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Church of Christ in Anthon. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Mahaney Funeral Home of Fonda was in charge of arrangements. Delores Conley was born icon Oct. 12, 1931 in Moville to Ernest and Emma(Jahn) Haring. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1949. On January 3, 1954 she married icon Don Conley in Anthon. They lived in the Anthon-Correctionville area for many years and in Anthon as well. In 1985 They moved to Iowa City, Iowa where they worked for the Ronald McDonald House. They were the first house parents at the McDonald House there. They were also foster parents for 16 children. She is survived by her husband Don of Fonda; two daughters Becky and husband James Fenceroy of Sioux City, and Melanie and husband Mark Foster of Fonda, and one son Mike and wife Patricia Conley of Sioux City, her mother Emma Haring of Sioux City; nine grandchildren, Jeremy, Christopher and Jerodiah Conley, Josian, Joshua and Zachariah Fenceroy; Nathaniel and Natasha Foster; and Taylor Conley; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a sister Donna and her husband Richard Ostrihonsky of Sioux City. She was preceded in death by her father; a son Lyndon in 1984 and a daughter, Lori Conley in 1987.

WALTER E. CRAIG, 87, of Anthon passed away on Saturday December 7, 2002. Services were Tuesday December 10, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Bill Schreiber officiating and the Rev. Don Dorsey of Glenmary Home Missioners concelebrating. Burial was in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Walter Edward Craig was born icon Jan. 23, 1915 at home on the family farm near Danbury Iowa. He was the son of John and Mary (Smith) Craig. He attended country school and St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury. He farmed the family farm until 1946. On June 1, 1944, he married icon Annabelle Lamaak at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Wall Lake, Iowa. He and his brother, Tom, ran Craig's Tavern in Anthon from 1946 to 1966. He then worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation until retirement. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. He was a self-taught musician, primarily playing guitar and piano, and also enjoyed singing. For several years, he and some friends had a small band that played for area dances. He enjoyed gardening and visiting with friends and family. Until recent years, he greatly enjoyed fishing and hunting. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a Chicago Cubs fan. Survivors include Annabelle, his wife of 58 years; two sons, Brother Dennis "Jim" of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Robert "Bob" and his wife, Linda of Cherokee, Iowa; two daughters, MaryAnn and her husband, Pat Boyle of Vermillion, S.D., and Aggie and her husband, Joseph DeRozza of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, Larry and his wife, Jill Boyle of Spencer, Okla., Jennifer Craig of Palm Dessert, Calif., Laura Craig of Plymouth, Minn., Scott and his wife, Kim Anderson of Omaha, and Kathy Anderson of Omaha; four great-grandchildren, John and Daniel Boyle and Shelby and Caleb Anderson; sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; six sisters; and three grandsons, Michael and John Boyle and James Craig.

ESTHER E MILLER 84, a life-long Anthon resident passed away on Monday Nov. 18, 2002. Services were held on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Esther Edna Miller was born icon on June 16, 1918 on the family farm east of Anthon, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Brant) Sand. She married icon Everts J Miller on August 14, 1941 and the couple farmed north of Anthon. Everts passed away on May 25, 1985. Esther loved to garden, dress chickens and helping in the fields. She enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son and his wife, Royce and Fay Miller of Anthon; two grandsons, Everts III, and Chad and wife Christy Miller, one granddaugther Dawn and husband Darrell Hadley and one great-granddaughter; Jade Hadley, one sister Josephine Jorgensen of Colorado and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers; August, Scott, and Nick one grandson James Miller and her brother-in-law, Nels Jorgensen.

FRED B. THOMPSON 85, a lifelong resident of Woodbury County, residing in Correctionville, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Anthon, Iowa, with the Rev. Karl Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating, followed by a Masonic service conducted by the Cerulean Lodge 550 A.F. & A.M. of Anthon, all at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Fred Bennett Thompson, the son of William Bennett and Cora Christiana (Osburn) Thompson, was born icon on a farm south of Anthon on Aug. 20, 1917. Fred grew up and was educated in Anthon, graduating from Anthon Public High School in 1936. He worked for various merchants in Anthon before entering the U.S. Army in 1942. During World War II, he was stationed overseas in New Guinea and the Philippines and stateside in Orlando, Fla., El Paso, Texas and Los Angeles, Calif. He married icon Norma Thompson on Feb. 15, 1943 in Hollywood, Calif. After the war, the couple returned to Anthon where they farmed for several years. In 1967 he accepted a position as salesman with Jansen Implement at Anthon and sold John Deere farm equipment. Fred enjoyed his work as a salesman for over 20 years. When he retired from John Deere, he delivered engines for ACE Distributors in Sioux City until 1993. In 1966 Fred and Norma moved to Rock Branch, Iowa where they spent many happy years. They traveled extensively all over the world and throughout the United States during their retirement, having seen the Great Wall of China, all the Hawaiian Islands, New England, Alaska, most of the provinces in Canada, Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills, plus they made many trips to Missouri and Oregon to visit family and friends. Their hearts had always been in Rock Branch but they also purchased a home in Correctionville in November 2000. Fred's health began to fail after a stroke in June of 2001, and he entered the Correctionville Nursing & Rehab Center on July 2, 2001, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of United Methodist Church, American Legion, McNiff Post 389 and Masonic Cerulean Lodge 550 A.F. & A.M., all of Anthon. Survivors include his wife, Norma; seven children, Fred Owen, who resides at the VA Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, Carol Jean Carter of Des Moines, Joan Lorraine and her husband, Mark Meister, of Correctionville, Douglas Alan and his wife, Shirley, also of Correctionville, Norman Craig and his wife, Laura, of Browerville, Minn., Steven Michael and his wife, Sheryl, of Sioux City and Sandra Dee Brauninger of Storm Lake, Iowa; 21 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter E. Thompson of Moville; plus many other very special family members and friends, including Fred Brauninger and Larry Carter, who were very supportive during his life. He was preceded in death by his parents in 1959; a granddaughter, Ann Chere' Thompson, four brothers, Albert Peters, who died as an infant in Arkansas, Marion "Friday" Thompson, William Henry Thompson and Jerry Edward Thompson; and his only sister, Mrs. William "Virgie" Eickholt.

ROY G MITCHELL, 82, of Anthon and formerly of Oto, Iowa died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday October 19, 2002 at United Church of Christ in Oto, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Roy George Mitchell was born icon May 20, 1920, to Frank and Carrie (Patterson) Mitchell in Oto. He graduated from Oto High School with the class of 1939. He married icon Dorothy Schoening on Oct. 16, 1940, in Oto. To this union a son and daughter were born. The couple custom farmed and did trucking in the Oto community. They spent their winters in Texas since 1951, where he did carpentry work. Dorothy died April 6, 1986. He married icon Mabel McClellan on July 28, 1987, in Sioux City. Mabel died Oct. 25, 1989. He married icon Leona Jacobson on June 30, 1990, in Anthon. They moved from Oto to Anthon in 1993. Roy was a member of United Church of Christ in Oto. He also was a member of the school board for 15 years, the Farm Bureau and the Oto Alumni. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife, Leona of Anthon; a son and his wife, Marvin and Ronica Mitchell of Oto; a daughter and her husband, Lois and Curt Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Irene Lakner of Mapleton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his first two wives, he was also preceded in death by his parents.

MARTIN R. STADING 85, of rural Anthon, died unexpectedly at his farm Wed. October 9, 2002. Arrangements were with Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel in Sioux City. He is survived by his wife, daughter Charlotte and one grandson Nathan Hollingshead

CLAIRE WELTE 77, of Danbury died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home north of Danbury following a lengthy illness. Services were Thursday Oct. 10, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. Burial was in Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Claire Joseph Welte Sr. was born icon June 12, 1925 to Frank and Kathryn (Uhl) Welte in rural Mapleton, Iowa. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School in Danbury and graduated from Oto High School in 1943. On June 12, 1947 he married icon Vera T. Pullis and the couple settled into a lifetime of farming and raising livestock near Danbury. He was very active throughout the years in the Woodbury Co. Cattleman's Assoc. Served as a Director of the church for nearly 30 years and was a long time leader and assistant leader with the Morgan Hustlers 4-H club. He was also a 50 year member of the Oto Alumni Assoc. He was very active in the Knights of Columbus for over 59 years as well. Claire loved farming, traveling, entertaining and having coffee and conversation with family and frineds He was a very devoted family-oriented man. He also served as a field agent for the Knights of Columbus Insurance and was the leading agent for 13 years in Northwest Iowa. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Vera T; four sons; Claire Jr. (Skip) and wife Judy, Frank II and wife Sheryl, Robert and wife Sherry and David and wife Melanie. Grandchildren Teresa, Brenda, Philip, Lisa, Sarah, Kristi, Jenni, Matt, and Justin, and 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters Leone Morgan of Mapleton and Helen and husband Burton Tweed of Shelton, WA; one brother Louis and wife LaMona of Anthon; one sister-in-law, Harriet Welte of Memphis, TN, along with numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Catherine Dandurand, and Pauline Scott; two brothers, James and Francis (Bud); four brothers-in-law, Henry Morgan, Andrew Stodden, Orville Dandurand and Walter Scott along with one sister-in-law, Margaret Owens.

RAYMOND BEESON 85, former Anthon resident, passed away on Wed. Sept. 11, 2002 at the nursing home in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were Sat. Sept. 14, with graveside services at noon in Correctionville Cemetery.Arrangements were under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa. Raymond Henry Beeson was born icon July 3, 1917, in Correctionville, the son of J. Henry and Lottie (Pierce) Beeson. He was united in marriage to Verda Hansen on Aug. 29, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple farmed in the Correctionville and Anthon area. They retired from farming in 1991 and moved into Lawton. Ray also worked as the Woodbury County weed commissioner for 11 years. He enjoyed farming, and also enjoyed traveling many years with his wife Verda. He could often be heard whistling and enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include his wife of 64 years; two sons and their wives, Larry and Mary Lou Beeson of Wisner, Neb., and Gary and Linda Beeson of Anthon; two daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Jerry Martin of Marcus, Iowa, and Connie and Gary Edwards of Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren and step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mamie Hobbs of Kingsley, Iowa, and Opal and her husband, Roy Bremer of Holstein, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Lucille Beeson of Correctionville; and several other relatives, neighbors and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters and a great-grandchild.

LILLIAN E ESKILDSEN 102, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Oto and Danbury, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Mountain Home. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday August 23, 2002 at the United Church of Christ in Oto, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Thursday, August 22, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, Iowa.
Lillian Elizabeth Eskildsen was born icon Oct. 5, 1899, in Pioneer, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Sarah (Moffet) Kent. Her mother died shortly after her birth. In 1909, the family moved to Oto, where she was raised and educated. On Sept. 21, 1917, she was united in marriage to Matt Eskildsen in Sioux City. The couple lived in the Danbury and Oto area. Matt died April 4, 1964. She remained in the area until 10 years ago, when she moved to her daughter's home in Ark. She was a member of United Church of Christ. Those left to cherish her memory include two sons and their wives, Marvin and Helen Eskildsen of Oto and Alvin and Dorothy Eskildsen of Correctionville, Iowa; three daughters, Elaine and her husband, Fred Freer, of Mountain Home, Pauline Tibbetts of Prescott, Ariz., and Betty and her husband, Morgan Anderson, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and several grandchildren.

CATHERINE I MOORE 92, of Ames, Iowa, and formerly of Oto died Sunday, August 18, 2002 in Ames. Funeral services were held on Wed. August 21, 2002 at Anthon with burial in Bethel Peiro Cemetery, rural Oto, Iowa.

NELS P. ANDERSON JR. 86, of Anthon passed away on Wed. July 31, 2002 at the Nursing Home in Correctionville, Iowa. Services were Friday August 2, 2002 at the Church of Christ in Anthon with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Military rites were conducted by the McNiff Post #389, American Legion of Anthon. Masonic services were also held. Nels Peter Anderson Jr. was born icon on May 7, 1916 near Anthon to Nels Sr. and Marie (Madsen) Anderson. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He married icon Shirley Ann Swanson on Feb. 25, 1948. They had three children. They farmed southeast of Anthon for many years. Farming was Nel's life work. Nels enjoyed playing cards, golfing, bowling and gardening. Survivors include a son, Norman of Anthon, and two daughters; Susan and Grant Fitch of Correctionville and Peggy and Larry Kluckman of Sioux City; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers; Homer Anderson of Anthon and Kenneth and his wife Phyllis of Moville, Iowa; one sister-in-law Dorothy Anderson of Correctionville and many other relatives, neighbors and good friends. Nels was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers; Holger, Paul and Elmer.
