THOMAS W. CRAIG, 91, of Anthon died Saturday, July 20, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital from pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. William Schreiber officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery with military honors conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, Monday July 22, 2002 with family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Mr. Craig was born icon April 18, 1911, in Danbury, the son of John and Mary (Smith) Craig. He was raised on the family farm north of Danbury, where he attended country schools in Morgan Township and at St. Patrick's Academy in Danbury. After completing his formal education, he farmed and worked on road construction. He entered military service in 1942 and served his country with the 142nd Field Artillery of the Fifth Army in campaigns in North Africa and Italy during World War II, receiving two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars as a member of the artillery signal corps. He married icon Helen Hupke on April 9, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. She died Nov.15, 1995. After his discharge from the military in 1945, he moved to Anthon where he resided until his death. He was engaged in several business as sole proprietor or in family partnerships in Anthon, Correctionville and Sioux City, the latest being Craig Electric in Anthon. He operated Craig Electric until he began caring for his wife full time during her final illness. He was a member of American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon, Veterans of Foreign Wars, served on the Anthon City Council, and was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and helping others solve electrical problems. Survivors include two sons, William (Bill) of Anthon, and Patrick and his wife, Susan of Eldora, Iowa; two grandchildren, Suzanna and her husband, Michael McIntyne of Avon, Minn., and Kathryn Craig of St. Louis, Mo.; a brother and his wife, Walter and Annabelle of Anthon; and many nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. Memorials may be directed to Anthon Rescue Squad or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon.

JANE LARIE (JACKSON) MURRELL 64, of Sloan passed away on Tuesday, July 9, 2002. Services were held on Saturday July 13, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Salix, Iowa, with the Rev. Donald J Slavin officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oto, Iowa. Wood Funeral Home in Sloan was in charge of arrangements. Jane Larie was born icon on January 19, 1938, in Oto, Iowa, the daughter of Mervin L. and Helen (Dolan) Jackson. Jane attended school in Oto and graduated with the class of 1956. She then attended Morningside College in Sioux City for one year. On Feb. 2, 1957, she married icon Norman Gayle Murrell in Oto, Iowa. The couple farmed near Anthon for 16 years, before moving to Sloan in 1973. Jane was employed at Pork's Grocery Store in Anthon for three years and at K-Mart in Sioux City for 25 years. She retired in 1998. The couple had enjoyed wintering in Florida for several years. Jane was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She really enjoyed being with her family and friends and especially her grandchildren and great grandsons. She also enjoyed her flowers, camping, fishing and dancing. She is survived by her husband, Norman Gayle Murrell of Sloan; two sons, Dean and wife Rene, of Shawnee, Kansas, and Ronald of Shawnee, Kansas; two daughters and their husbands, Lorie and Ronald Jepsen on Bronson, Iowa, and Carla and Steve Crawford of Sloan, nine grandchildren, Rebecca Chan, Ryan Friis, Hannah Jepsen, Austin Murrell, Ashley Murrell, Kelsey Murrell, Megan Crawford, Abagail Crawford and Katie Crawford; two great-grandson, Jacob and Dalton Chan; and a sister and her husband, Merlene and Don Flynn of Madrid, Iowa. Jane was preceded in death by her parents.

MICHAEL PATRICK BOYLE 36, of Chicago, and grandson of WALTER & ANNABELLE CRAIG of Anthon, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at his residence of cardiomyopathy. Services were held at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery following the services. Mike was born icon in Sioux City on April 24, 1966. He lived there until the age of 5 when his family moved to Rockwell City, Iowa. He grew up and attended school there, graduating from Rockwell City High School in 1984. He was in vocal music groups, musicals and plays, and was on the golf team. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, graduating in 1991 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was active at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Student Center. He was in the ISU men's choral group his freshman year. Mike dreamed of being a pilot, began his flight training at the university where he earned his private pilot's license, and enjoyed being a member of the Iowa State Flying Club. He continued taking additional flight training, earned his instrument and commercial ratings, and became a certified flight instructor and an instrument instructor. He did flight instruction and charter flying for Iowa State University and CY Aviation in Boone, Iowa. He then obtained his multi-engine and multi-engine instructor ratings. He began working for Great Lakes Airlines as a charter pilot, advanced to its commuter planes, earned his air transport certificate and served first as first officer and then as captain, instructor and check airman. He lived in many cities in Great Lakes' service area, with the longest period being in Spencer, Iowa. He especially loved being near Lake Okoboji and spent many hours there with friends and family. In 1998, he was hired by Reno Air and was based in San Jose, Calif., and then Reno, Nev. When Reno Air was acquired by American Airlines, he continued to be based in Reno until transferring to Chicago where he was based until his death. He served as first officer. Mike married icon the love of his life, Patricia (Tricia) Michele Etcheto on Oct. 12, 2001, at Assumption Catholic Church in Chicago, where they have been active parishioners and Mike was a member of the choir. Tricia is a flight attendant, and they met while on the same flight crew at Reno Air. Mike enjoyed many activities. He loved flying and was an avid biker who had done the RAGBRAI bicycle ride across Iowa many times. He enjoyed swimming, canoeing, kayaking, water skiing, snow skiing, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, fixing things, helping with work projects of family and friends, traveling, cooking, singing, scuba diving, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. He was a doting uncle to his two nephews and was thrilled to be his nephew John's godfather. He liked fireworks, jokes and good movies. He really worked at keeping in touch with family and friends and enjoyed getting together with them whenever he could. Survivors include his beloved wife, Tricia; his parents, PAT & MARYANN (CRAIG) BOYLE of Vermillion; his brother, Lawrence (Larry) and sister-in-law, Jill, and nephews, John and Daniel of Spencer, Okla.; his grandparents, WALTER & ANNABELLE CRAIG of Anthon, Iowa; aunts and uncles, Stan and Judy Boyle of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Dave and Nancy Boyle of Fort Collins, Colo., Dan and Marcia Boyle of Rock Rapids, Iowa, Dick Boyle of Sioux City, Tim and Debbie Boyle of Dakota Dunes, Marilyn and Dan Galvin of Sioux Falls, S.D., Brother Dennis Craig of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bob and Linda Craig of Cherokee, Iowa, and Aggie and Joe DeRozza of Omaha, Neb.; 23 first cousins; his father-in-law, John Etcheto of Reno, Nev.; his mother-in-law, Dana Collins of Reno; his sister-in-law, Megan Etcheto of Reno; his grandmother-in-law, Pat Stovall of Reno; his grandfather-in-law, Peter Etcheto of Elko, Nev.; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, John in 1987; his paternal grandparents, Walter and Emily Boyle; and his cousin, Jim Craig. Pallbearers will be Steve Fredricks, Ollie Hohbach, Tim Taylor, Tim Sowden, Larry Schoop, Rob Jones, John Kuivenan and Ed Twedt. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Priest, Tracy Bainbridge, and his cousins. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established. A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Monday, July 8, at Assumption Catholic Church in Chicago.

BETTY L. VAUGHN 75, of Correctionville died Wednesday, June 26, 2002, at her home. Services were held at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, Iowa, with Pastor Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of arrangements. Betty Lou Vaughn was born icon May 4, 1927, in Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Freda (Ramm) Seehusen. She attended school in Crawford County. On Nov. 5, 1946, she was united in marriage to Walter Vaughn in Elk Point, S.D. They farmed their entire lives, first in the Anthon area and later near Correctionville. It was in these communities where they also raised their five children. Walter died Aug. 26, 1971. Betty stayed on the farm until the fall of 2001, when she moved into Correctionville. She was a member of Anthon United Methodist Church, where she was active in the W.S.C.S. She volunteered her time and talent in the activities at Colonial Nursing Home in Correctionville. She also enjoyed the fellowship and outings of the Correctionville Singles Club. She found pleasure in time spent in the care of her flowers, gardening, playing cards, bingo and dominos, but her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors left to cherish Betty's memory include three sons, Mick and his wife, Marilyn of Sioux City, and Randy and Jim, both of Correctionville; two daughters and their husbands, Pat and Bruce Fick of Mitchellville, Iowa, and Nancy and Daryl Bogenrief of Correctionville; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several other relatives, neighbors and good friends. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ruby Anderson; three brothers, Charles, Earl and Bill Seehusen; and a daughter-in-law, Sheila Vaughn.

MARGUERITE KOBS 89, formerly of Anthon passed away Saturday June 1, 2002 in Elk Point, South Dakota. Funeral services were held Wed. June 5, at McCook Lake, South Dakota with burial in West Fork Township Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa. Marguerite was born icon on March 9, 1913 to Louis and Grace (Jones) Fey and was raised at Anthon. She graduated from High School at Anthon with the class of 1931. She continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa. She taught at area country schools until her marriage to Walter "Jake" Kobs June 24, 1941. The couple made their home in the Anthon area. Walter passed away in June of 1972 and in 1974 Marguerite moved to McCook Lake, South Dakota. Survivors include a daughter Paulette and Robert Streeter of McCook Lake; a son Darrell and Sheilla Kobs of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister, Mae Maurene and George Sargent of Anthon; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and friends. Along with her husband Jake, she was preceded in death by a grandson Jon, her parents and three brothers, Arnold, Frank and Paul Fey.

WALLACE PARKER 77, passed away at his home on Sunday May 26, 2002. Funeral services were Wednesday morning May 29, 2002 at the Methodist Church, Anthon. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Wallace was born icon near Anthon, on July 12, 1924, the son of Elton Lloyd and Emily Cecelia (Heath) Parker. He graduated in 1942 from Anthon Community School and started farming. He married icon Dorothy Sands on July 6, 1948. The couple lived on a few different farms around Anthon until 1982 until they built a new home in town and moved to town. It was rumored in one of the 'ol neighborhoods that Wallace was retired, but I don't think he knew what that word meant. Neither did Dorothy. He worked hard and was out everyday working on one of his farms up until this past winter when his health began to fail. Survivors include his wife Dorothy of 53 years; two son, Lloyd and his wife, Jody of Anthon and Frank of La Vista, Nebr.; three daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Gary Seuntjens of Danbury, Carol and Alan Pierce of Spencer, Iowa, and Charlotte and Steve Walsh of Odebolt, Iowa. Grandchildren and one great granddaughter; two sisters, Wilma and Bill Robeson of Cherokee, and Betty and Dick Pedersen of Missoula, Montana along with other relatives, neighbors and friends. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Charlie; as an infant, one granddaughter, Angela Pierce, and a son-in-law, Marion "Chick" Ashley.

JERRY DICKS of Moville, Iowa passed away in the spring of 2002. He was a member of the Class of 1962. Burial was in the Rock Branch Cemetery, rural Correctionville.

MILDRED ALLMAN 90, of rural Anthon passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2002 in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Anthon with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Iowa. Mildred Berniece was born icon Dec. 13, 1911, in Smithland, Iowa, the daughter of George Newton and Olive Mabel (Francis) Jackson. She graduated from Oto High School in 1930. On Feb. 23, 1935, she married icon Millard K. Allman. The couple farmed near Oto their entire life until moving to Lawton, Iowa, in 2000. Mildred enjoyed her family, baking, fishing, gardening, flowers. Survivors include her husband Millard, one son, Keith Allman of Oto; and one daughter Mary Jane, and her husband, Leo Shanahan of Sioux City; grandchildren, Kevin and Becky Allman, Chris and Sherri Allman, Kim and her husband, Todd Rose, Steve and Sheila Bumsted, Mark and Diane Bumsted, Dan Bumsted, Scott Bumsted, Jean Lillie, Joan (Lillie) Holmes and Marcy and her husband Eric Petersen; 27 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; along with other relatives, neighbors and friends. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Alice Lillie; a grandson, Gregory Bumsted; a granddaughter, Cynthia Bumsted; and two brothers, Mervin Jackson and Harlan Jackson.

MARJORIE ANNA "MARGE" NATHLICH 75, former Anthon resident, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton. Services were Tuesday April 2, 2002 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Marjorie Anna was born icon Nov. 8, 1926, in Charter Oak, Iowa, to August and Viola (Pautsch) Neddermeyer. She was baptized, confirmed, and received her education in Charter Oak at St. John's Lutheran Church and Parochial School. On March 7, 1948 she married icon Orville Nathlich at the Lutheran church in Charter Oak. To this union one daughter was born. The couple lived and farmed near Mapleton, Ute, and in the Anthon, Iowa, area. They retired from farming and moved into Anthon. Orville passed away September 13, 1996. Marge moved back to Mapleton in 1998. She worked as a cook for many years at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center. She and Orville also worked together for the Walter-Armstrong Funeral Home for 25 years, and were also managers of the Anthon Community Center in Anthon. The couple kept busy in their retirement by taking care of picking up and delivering the Senior Citizen meals in Correctionville. Marge was a very active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, where she served as a greeter, circle leader, and accounted for the financial donations after services. She also was a member of the Sunshine Club and the Neighborhood Casino, a group of friends with whom she enjoyed playing cards. She had a passion for gardening and took pride in mowing and maintaining lawns and yards with a love for the outdoors. Her greatest love, however, was found in her family. Survivors include one daughter Marlys and her husband, Wayne Dose of Holstein, Iowa; two granddaughters, Gail Lynn and Brian Kuester of Sioux City, and Sheri Kay and Gerald Tarr of Ida Grove, Iowa, one grandson, Brett Wade Dose and his special friend, Lindsey Riley of Woodward, Iowa; one great-granddaughter, Erica Marlene Kuester; two great-stepgranddaughters, Josie and Liz Tarr; and three sisters, Phyllis Bockelman of Dow City, Iowa, Darlene and her husband, Charles "BUD" Dose of Anthon, and Julie Ann and her husband, Alan O'Neil of Redfield, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband Orville, her parents; a grandson, Keith Wayne Dose; and a brother and a sister, both in infancy.

MABEL PAULSEN 98, of Anthon died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Sioux City. Services were Wednesday March 27, 2002 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Anthon. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery. Mabel Mae Paulsen was born icon March 29, 1903, in Lyons, Nebraska to Louis William and Lucy Ann (Murphy) Miller. The family moved to Sioux City when Mabel was a child. She married icon Henry Paulsen in Sioux City on November 9, 1937 and the couple moved west of Anthon. Henry died July 30, 1973. Mabel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Anthon. Survivors include a stepbrother, Robert Darch of Pennsylvania, one brother-in-law, Matt Curtin of Sioux City; several nieces and nephews. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, Frank Miller; and one sister, Lillian Curtin.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR RICHARD POPE 61; WHO PASSED AWAY UNEXPECTEDLY AT HIS HOME ON SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 2002 WERE HELD TUESDAY, MARCH 26, AT 10:30 a.m. AT ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH IN ANTHON. Officiating at the funeral mass were Rev William Schreiber and Rev. Edmund Tiedeman. LaMona Welte served as organist and Ann Bass former Elementary Principal at A-O-MV was the soloist. Music sung was "On Eagles Wings", "I Will Always Love You", and "Unchained Melody". Pallbearers were Bernard Ketelsen, Jerry Klindt, Ron Boekhout, Jason Kearnes, Roger Nelson, Fred Harden, Gene Schoneman and Jim Bass. Burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery, Little Rock, Iowa next to his wife Mary. Armstrong Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD BRAMLEY POPE was born icon October 19, 1940 at Little Rock, Iowa, the son of Leo and Edith Mae (Bramley) Pope. He grew up in the Little Rock area where he attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Little Rock High School with the class of 1959. He attended Iowa State University in Ames where he enrolled in the R.O.T.C. program. After one year at Ames, he transferred to Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa where he went on to graduate with a BS in Business Administration. He then worked at Commercial Credit in Sioux City for one year. He married icon Mary Catherine Keitges on June 1, 1963 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon, Iowa. The couple returned to Westmar College to continue their education where Richard received his BA degree in Education. The family moved to Anthon in 1966 where Mr. Pope began his teaching career at Anthon-Oto Community School. He was currently teaching fifth grade Science and Social Studies at Anthon-Oto-Maple Valley and had planned to retire from teaching at the end of the 2002 school year. His wife Mary passed away unexpectedly on October 27, 1997. Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. He loved to be outdoors, fishing, hunting, hiking and walking. He really appreciated being around other people and enjoyed a cup of coffee with friends and family. Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his three sons, Jeff of Winnebago, Nebraska, Mike of Oto, Iowa and David of Anthon; one brother Ron Pope and his wife Betty of Little Rock, Iowa; two aunts, Evelyn and Dick Perusse of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Eleanor and Menno Anning of Luverne, Minnesota; cousins, Greg and Peg Kruger and family of Ellsworth, Minnesota, Donna and Gabe Dreher and family of Regina Saskatchewan, Canada; and Nancy and Terry Moonen of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also survived by his extended family of adopted brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and grandchildren; along with fellow school personnel; the hundreds of students he touched the lives of as well as neighbors, and MANY good friends. Richard was preceded in death by his wife Mary and his parents. He will be missed.
