FRANCIS "FLIP" DIXON 86, of Anthon passed away Tuesday March 12, 2002 at his residence in Anthon. Services were held on Friday, March 15, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon with burial in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Francis Phillip Dixon; "Flip" as he was known, was born icon on June 1, 1915 to John J. and Vera (Clark) Dixon at Neola, Iowa. The family moved to Anthon when he was four and it is here he received his education attending St. Joseph's Catholic School and graduating from Anthon High School with the class of 1933. In 1938 he married icon Edna Marie Koehler and the couple farmed near Anthon for many years. Edna passed away in August of 1974. "Flip" is survived by six sons, Robert and Diane of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ralph and Karen of Helena, Montana, Nick and Jo of Kansas City, Missouri, Don and Vicki of LeMars, John and Linda of Anthon and Michael of Moville, Iowa; six daughters, Helen and Kyle Sapp, of Omaha, Nebraska, Joan Walsh of Sioux City, Alice and Fred Straub of Spokane, Washington, Patricia and Steve Moseman of Milford, Iowa, Mary and Steve Diamond of Cheney, Washington and Debra of Sheldon, Iowa; Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren; three sisters Emma Coyne of Manson, Iowa, Patricia Lacey of Atlanta, Georgia, and Mary Weber of Sioux City, Iowa; one brother Raymond of Woodburn, Oregon; and two sisters-in-laws, Louise Dixon of Sterling, Colorado and Lee Dixon of Moville, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife Edna, his parents, a sister as well as five brothers.

ROSS HANDKE 68, formerly of Oto, Iowa passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002 at his home in Portland, Oregon. Ross was born icon November 9, 1933 in Oto, the son of Henry and Edna (Downing) Handke. He attended school at Oto and enlisted in the Navy and served during WW II. On October 22, 1955 he married icon Barbara Carlson. He is survived by his wife Barbara; one son Gervis, and three daughters, Denise, Deena, and DeEtta; Grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Handke and his wife Margaret of Anthon, and Donald and Elda Handke of Portland, Oregon, a sister Marilla Keleher of Lawton, Iowa, and numerous other relatives from the Anthon and Oto area. He was preceded in death by an infant child, his parents, seven brothers, Gifford, Portis, Herald, Lonnie, Melvin, Phillip, Tracy and four sisters, Sarah Harriet, Delma Nelson, Letha Bottjen, and Ethel Johnson.

MARIAN LOUISE ASHLEY 53, of rural Jackson, Nebraska was pronounced dead at her residence on Monday, March 11, 2002. Memorial services were held at 10:30 Saturday March 16, 2002 at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, Nebraska with the Rev. Bill Anderson officating. Burial of the cremains was on March 22, 2002 at Oak Hill Cemetary, Anthon, Iowa. Miss Ashley was born icon Febuary 17, 1949, at Anthon, Iowa; the daughter of Eldon B. and Nellie Katherine (Petersen) Ashley. She was raised in the Anthon area. She moved to Nebraska where she made her home. She was employed with Swift Packing Co., Whellers Plastics and Gill Landfill. Survivors include two brothers and their wives, George and Marilyn Ashley of Cushing, Iowa, and Blaine and Jane Ashley of Moville, Iowa; five sisters, Janice and her husband, Glen Little of Lake View, Iowa, Marcia and her husband, Jerry Sistrunk of Sac City, Iowa, Sharon and her husband, Dennis Howard of Pierson, Iowa, Eunice and her husband, Mark Ericsson and Evelyn Putzier, all of Anthon; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

ALMA CORBIN 91, of Mapleton passed away Friday March 8, 2002. Services were held on Monday March 11, 2002 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, rural Charter Oak, with burial at St. Clair Cemetery in Ute, Iowa. Alma was born icon July 6, 1910 in Freeborn County, Minnesota to John and Inger (Torgerson) Knutson. She attended school in Glenville and graduated from High School in 1929. She attended normal school and received her teaching certificate and taught in rural Minnesota schools until she married icon Paul M Tollakson in Spirit Lake, Iowa on July 6, 1935. The couple then moved to Sioux Rapids, Iowa. After the death of her husband, she later married icon Milford Glenn Corbin on June 23, 1962 in Sioux Rapids and the family moved to Mapleton where she lived until her death. Alma taught in the Anthon-Oto Schools for several years. During this time she also attended Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Iowa and received her Bachelor's Degree in elementary education. She was very active in her church and held various offices in the women's church groups. She enjoyed fishing and camping with her second husband and was always ready to play a game of cards with friends or family. Mrs. Corbin is survived by her children, Doris and Richard Ofstun in Illinois, John and Ruthie Tollakson of Wyoming, Chuck and Gloria Corbin of Ames, Iowa, Fred and Ruth Corbin of Sioux Center, Iowa and Gary Corbin of Omaha, Nebraska; two brothers and their wives; a sister; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her first husband; Paul M Tollakson, and her second husband Milford Corbin; her parents; 7 brothers and 2 sisters as well as one daughter, Mrs. Duane (Eleanore) Jerman of Pierson, Iowa.

MARIE E. JONES 89, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Anthon, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Services were held Monday March 4, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Bill Schreiber officiating. Burial was in the Catholic Cemetery in Anthon. Marie Eleanor was born icon Nov. 22, 1912, in Hamburg, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Edgarda Lee (Speaks) Castleman. After graduating from high school in Hamburg, she attended Ohio State University for two years and graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 1935. She married icon Merl R. Jones on Nov. 23, 1937. During their marriage she did not work outside the home but moved with her husband and sons to homes in Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota and Iowa. In 1946, Merl's job with the United States Department of Agriculture brought them to Anthon. After Merl's death she returned to college, and received her Master's Degree in library science from the University of Minnesota. She was a member of the Iowa Library Association board and held an honorary life membership in that organization. She was also a longtime member of the Anthon Public Library board. Until her retirement she was assistant director of the Sioux City Public Library, and coordinator of the Indian Library Project in cooperation with the Sioux City Indian Center and the Winnebago Tribe in Winnebago, Nebraska. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America, a former member of the Anthon Women's Club, and a member of the Anthon Community Club. During her college years, she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi social sorority. In her later years, she was a delegate to older Iowan's Legislature, and a member of the Area IV Agency on Aging Task Force. Survivors include three sons, Lawrence and his wife, Catherine of Iowa City, Robert and his wife, Suzanne of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Donald of Sioux City; grandchildren, Neal, Chad and Caleb of Twin Falls, Jeremy and his wife, Emily of Cape May, N.J., and Christopher and Katherine of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her husband Merl on July 17, 1965, a son, Roger; two sisters, Dorothy Solzman and Florence Christiansen; and a brother, Clarence Castleman. Memorials may be sent to the Anthon Library or a charity of choice.

CARL F. BUROW 48, of Smithland, Iowa passed away Wednesday February 13, 2002. Funeral services were held on Saturday February 16, 2002 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Carl was the son of George and Doris (Livermore) Burow and was born icon on April 7, 1953 in Anthon. He graduated from Anthon-Oto High School in 1972. He worked for MWE Construction for the past 15 years. Carl enjoyed drag racing, WWF Wrestling and football. Survivors include his mother Doris Burow of Anthon; a special partner Terry Theobald of Smithland, three daughters, Jalisa and Joelle Theobald at home, and Jessica and her husband Kevin Ronfeldt, two sons, Jerodiah Conley of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Jeremy Theobald at home; two sisters, Cecelia Burow of Glenwood, Iowa and Nancy Burow and her special partner Dan Diede of Anthon; a stepgrandson, Eathan and one niece, Karli Diede. Carl was preceded in death by his father; George and an infant brother Micklin.

EVERETT RICHABAUGH, 80, of Belvidere, Illinois., formerly of Anthon, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church in Belvidere. Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home in Belvidere was in charge of the services there. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2002 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Everett was born icon to Ernest and Sadie (Davis) Rickabaugh on Feb. 21, 1921, at the family home on the south side of Forney Lake in Thurman, Iowa, the seventh child of 10. He married icon Juanita Roark, daughter of Ed and Lena Roark of Rockport, Mo., on Sept. 19, 1941. They farmed in Iowa and dairy farmed in Bloomer, Wis. for eight years. They moved to Belvidere in 1965, and he worked in construction at the Chrysler Plant and later for Sjostrom and Sons until suffering a stroke in March 1981. Then he worked summers in maintenance at Green Giant for four years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher, Awana leader, deacon and trustee. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Juanita; daughters, Nancy (John) Pollnow of Marshfield, Wis., Sally (Bill) West of Poplar Grove, Ill., and Kathy (Lenny/Jesse) Jacobson of Belvidere; sons, Gene, David (Sheryl) and Dan (Pamela) Rickabaugh, all of Belvidere, Jim (Lynn) of Whitefish Bay, Wis., and Bob (Becky) Rickabaugh of Evansville, Ind.; 28 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.

Rosemary Ankrum, 79, of Sioux City, formerly of the Rodney and Oto, Iowa, areas, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Harvest Morningside Manor in Sioux City. Services were held Tuesday, January 22, 2002 at United Church of Christ in Rodney. Burial was in Grant Township Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Willman Funeral Home in Rodney. Rosemary was born icon Dec. 9, 1922, in Sioux City, to Ember and Marie (Tolifor) Seeman. She married icon Wilbur Ankrum Sr. on July 13, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois. She worked at Swift Meat Packing. She had been a resident of the Rodney and Oto area her whole life. Mr. Ankrum died Aug. 9, 1986, in Sioux City. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, reading, latch hook work and painting. Survivors include five sons, Art Ankrum and his wife, Sue of Rincon, Ga., Wilbur Ankrum Jr. and his wife, Jane of Washta, Iowa, Ember Ankrum and his fiancee, Gail Krumvieda of North Sioux City, LeRoy Ankrum of Raleigh, N.C., and Larry Ankrum and his wife, Rose of Holton, Texas; four daughters, Stella and her husband, Phillip Hayworth of Anthon, Iowa, Norma and her husband, Bill Brasel of Anthon, Jessie and her husband, David Holcomb of Correctionville, Iowa, and Judy Ankrum of Storm Lake, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three nieces. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a nephew, a great-granddaughter and a sister, Pearl Kelly.

JOHN W. FUNDERMANN, age 74, of Battle Creek, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 17, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek, Iowa, with Reverend Michael Saylor officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove was in charge of arrangements. John was born icon September 10, 1927, in Anthon, Iowa, to Theodore J. and Emma (Benker) Fundermann. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and graduated from Anthon High School in 1945. On February 22, 1948, John was united in marriage to Helen I. Putzier of Anthon. The couple lived in Anthon until 1965, at which time they moved to Battle Creek, IA, where they continued to make their home. John was a member and former elder of St. John's Lutheran Church in Battle Creek. He was a skilled handyman and jack-of-all-trades who was employed in many capacities during his lifetime. Over the years, he worked as an electrician, a farmer, and even as Mayor of Battle Creek. He put his talents to work at a gas station, a construction company, and at Johnson Oil Company in Battle Creek, and traveled for GOMACO as well. Woodworking, camping, attending threshing shows, hunting, and fishing were among his hobbies. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and one granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, Helen; five children and their spouses, Mary Ellen (Boots) and Jeri Goodmann of Battle Creek, Kathy and Butch Williams of Ida Grove, John E. and Kate Fundermann, Jr. of Hutchinson, MN, Steve Fundermann and special friend Jodee Thurston of Cherokee; and Cindy Hupke and special friend Steve Stoos of Battle Creek; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Theodore P. Fundermann, Paul Fundermann, and Wayne Fundermann and wife Diane, all of Anthon, Edward (Jake) Fundermann of Battle Creek, and Frank Fundermann and wife Carol of Red Oak, IA; three sisters, Pauline Osborne of Buffalo, MO, Judy Thompson and husband Duane of Williams, MN, and Eileen Bumsted and husband Gary of Anthon; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

ERNEST W. MAIER JR., 75, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness. Memorial services were Friday, January 11, 2002 at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. Private burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Oto, Iowa. Mr. Maier was born icon Dec. 24, 1926, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Ernest W. Sr. and Anna (Syz) Maier. He attended St. Louis schools and graduated from St. Louis High School. He married icon Anna Misita on June 22, 1946, in St. Louis. She died March 8, 1997, in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed as a meat packing plant manager and lived in several locations including Fergus Falls, Minn., Lewiston, Mont., Glenwood, Iowa, and Postville, Iowa. He settled in Sioux City in 1978. He was currently the branch manager for Burns Security (Wells Fargo) in Sioux City. He was of the Lutheran faith. Survivors include a son and his wife, Michael J. and Shannon Maier of Sioux City; three daughters, Christina and her husband, John Shuck, Lisa and her husband, Jerry Hoffman, and Laura Maier, all of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Alice and Gus Midden of Eureka Springs, Ark., and Carol and Harold Erickson of Nevada; eight grandchildren, Teresa Maier Carrillo, Chad Maier, Rebecca Maier, all of Anthon, Wendy, Jesse, Marisa, Laurel and Chloe; and a great-grandson, Anthony. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Ernest "Skip" Maier III and his wife, Mary Ellen Maier of Anthon, Christopher Maier, and Jack Maier.

DUANE E. "TUCK" BANTA SR., 73, of Oto died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa following a lengthy illness. Services were Friday January 4, 2002 at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Duane Wesley "Tuck" Banta Sr. was born icon Nov. 23, 1928, in Anthon, the son of George and Bertha (Rickman) Banta. He grew up and attended school in the Anthon and Oto area. He attended the United Church of Christ in Oto. On Aug. 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Kathleen McClimans in Elk Point, S.D. Tuck operated a bulldozer for over 40 years, working for Maudlin Construction in Webster City, Iowa, Lloyd Olson in Ute, Iowa, and the last 24 years for Flewelling Construction in Moville, Iowa. He and his wife, Kathy, ran the Oto Cafe for three years. Tuck enjoyed going to sales and auctions. He also found satisfaction in raising hogs, sheep and especially rabbits and also enjoyed the time he spent in the garden. Survivors include Kathy, his wife of 51 years of Oto; two sons, Ardell "Butch" Banta and his wife, Diana, of Correctionville and Duane Banta Jr. and his friend, Patty Gotto, of Mapleton, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Donna and Dan Reisdorph of Anderson, Mo.; grandaughter, Tami Banta, who Tuck and Kathy raised, of Oto, Alan Reisdorph and his fiancee, Becka Hamilton, of Jay, Okla., Ardell Banta Jr. and his wife, Vickie, of Sioux City, Deanna Skidmore and her husband, Tim, of Salix, Iowa, Valerie Banta and Amanda Banta, both of Le Mars, Iowa, Ryan Gotto, Aaron Gotto and Michael Banta, all of Mapleton, and Tracy Buck of California; great-grandchildren, Kiali Gotto, Ali Gotto and Cole Banta, who Tuck also helped raise, Steven Martin and Bryan Banta of Sioux City; three stepgrandchildren, Jeff, Eric and Jason Reisdorph of Tampa, Fla.; four great-stepgranddaughters, Chrystal and Kelly of Sioux City and Jordan and Taylor of Ridgeland, Miss.; two brothers and their wives, Merle and Darlene Banta of Sioux City and Chuck and Sandy Banta of Decatur, Ark.; three sisters and their husbands, Gin and Randy Pike of Rogers, Ark., Betty and Don Mook of Sioux City and Ona and Don Finzen of Sioux City; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Hope Banta; a grandson, Benji Banta; a brother, George "Dewey" Banta; and a baby sister.
