OPAL MARIE HEATH, 81, of Correctionville died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center. Services were Saturday January 5, 2002 at Grace Lutheran Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Thomas A. Sabel officiating. Burial was in Correctionville Cemetery. Mrs. Heath was born icon Feb. 13, 1920, on a farm near Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Gilbert and Viola (Fundermann) Schmidt. She attended country school through the eighth grade and completed the ninth grade in Holstein, Iowa. On Dec. 11, 1940, she married icon Robert V. Heath at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway. Opal was a homemaker. Her husband passed away on April 29, 2000. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed her family and flowers. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Carol and Allen Sobieski of Correctionville; two sons, Gary and Mike and his wife, Bonnie Heath, all of Correctionville; seven grandchildren, Michael Sobieski, Monica Miller, Bobbi Jo Heath, Julie Hummel, Rick Heath, Mark McCrea and Nick Heath; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Wilma Groth of Kingsley, Iowa, and Vesta Legg of Fort Huachuca, Ariz. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Verla Wanda Schmidt in infancy; a brother, Wilber Schmidt; and two grandchildren, Shawn McCrea and Sheila Vaughn.

NINOBELL BROWN COX 91, of Anthon died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were Friday December 28, at the Anthon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Burial was in the Correctionville Cemetery, Correctionville, Iowa. Ninobell Brown Cox was born icon June 24, 1910, in Dixon County, near Newcastle, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Clyde Elmore and Rozetta May (Taylor) Smith. She attended country school in Harding County, S.D. and Woodbury Township in Iowa. She graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School and attended Morningside College in Sioux City for teachers training. She taught school in Woodbury Township. On May 3, 1938, Ninobell was united in marriage to Freeman Brown. They farmed in the Correctionville area for 30 years. Freeman died June 22, 1968. She worked at the Woodbury County Care Facility and Mr. Donut in Sioux City. Ninobell also took care of the elderly in their homes. On February 16, 1980 she was united in marriage to William Cox. The couple then lived in Moville, Iowa. William died July 17, 1987. Ninobell moved to Sioux City in 1990, where she was active in the Senior Center. She also cared for others by transporting them to and from their appointments. In retirement, she spent a great deal of time traveling in the United States, Europe, Australia, and the British Isles. In 1992, she moved her mobile home to Anthon, where she lived until entering the assisted living home in Sioux City in 2000. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Roberta Cox of Moville; three stepgranddaughters, Margo Nixon and her husband, Brad, Mona Yanacheak and Marla Trieber and husband Kim, all of Moville; six great-stepgrandchildren; two great-great-stepgrandchildren; five sisters-in-law, Genevieve Brown, Joyce Brown and Mazel Brown, all of Anthon, Maurine Solomen of Sioux City and Darlene Grewin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands, a stepson, Clifford Cox; two sisters, Zelda May in infancy and Lumerne Felton of Sioux City; and a brother, Harold C. Smith of California.

LILA M LILLIE, 93, of Anthon passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2001 in a Sioux City hospital after suffering a heart attack. Funeral services were held Monday, December 24, at the United Methodist Church at Anthon with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. Lila Mary Jackson was born icon July 7, 1908 on a farm west of Oto, Iowa to Charley and Mabel (Benton) Jackson. She attended rural schools in Grant Township before going on to high school in Oto where she graduated in 1926. She continued her education at Morningside College and received her teachers certificate. She taught school for two years. She married icon Vincent Lillie in May of 1928 at the home of her parents. Vincent and Lila farmed in the Oto area until 1944 when they purchased a farm NW of Anthon. They had four children; Charles born icon in 1930, Norma born icon in 1932 who passed away at the age of 11 months and is buried at Piero Cemetery, Donald who was born icon in 1935 and passed away at the age of 29, and Kay born icon in 1938. Her husband Vincent was killed in a car accident in July of 1953 near Bend, Oregon and is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. In 1970, Lila bought her home in Anthon which had belonged to her great grandparents, the Dennis Sanford family in 1900. Lila was a member of the Anthon United Methodist Church, The Rebekah Lodge and for many years was in charge of the Senior Citizens Meal Site and enjoyed the Senior Citizens Group. She enjoyed and was an expert as a hand quilter and loved to crochet as much as she could find time for. Survivors include a son, Charles and his wife Bev of Storm Lake, IA, and a daughter Kay Anderson of Correctionville, IA; 10 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many other family members and many friends from the Anthon and Oto areas. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Benton Jackson, her son Donald, her baby daughter Norma, as well as one daughter-in-law, Phyllis (Buck) Lillie and one son-in-law, Delmer Anderson.

ELDON "E.B." ASHLEY, 99, of Anthon died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2001 at Rock Branch United Methodist Church in rural Correctionville. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Eldon Burton Ashley was born icon Nov. 12, 1902, in Anthon, the son of Bert Baker and Austa Jane (Drake) Ashley. In the 1920s and 1930s, he was a migrant worker. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees, serving in World War II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He returned home to farm with his father and later started farming on his own. On Jan. 14, 1948, he married icon Nellie Katherine Petersen in Le Mars, Iowa. Nellie passed away June 29, 1969. In Canton, S.D., he married icon Eleen Dyer on Aug. 25, 1976. He was a member of American Legion McNiff Post 389 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Eleen; two sons and their wives, George and Marilyn Ashley of Cushing, Iowa, and Blaine and Jane Ashley of Moville, Iowa; six daughters, Marian Ashley of Jackson, Neb., Janice and her husband, Glen Little of Lake View, Iowa, Marcia and her husband, Jerry Sistrunk of Sac City, Iowa, Sharon and her husband, Dennis Howard of Pierson, Iowa, Eunice and her husband, Mark Ericsson of Anthon and Evelyn Putzier of Anthon; a brother, Frank Ashley of Pierson; a sister, Shirley Reinking of Pierson; 22 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, Nellie, E.B. was preceded in death by his parents, a son who was stillborn, two sisters and a brother.

JEANETTE I. KRUSEN, 65, of Mapleton died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 14, 2001 at Smithland United Methodist Church in Smithland, Iowa. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. Jeanette Ilene Krusen was born icon May 2, 1936, in rural Mapleton, the daughter of Homer and Anna (Lorenzen) McClatchey. She graduated from Smithland High School with the class of 1954. On Oct. 23, 1954, Jeanette was united in marriage to Jack Krusen in Mapleton. The couple lived in Mapleton until 1971, when they moved to Moville, Iowa, where they resided until 1977. It was then that the family moved back to Mapleton. Jeanette ran detassling and bean walking crews over the years and went on to manage the Casey's General Store in Mapleton from 1980 until retiring in June 2001. Jack passed away at the age of 47 on June 8, 1984. Jeanette was a member of Rodney United Church of Christ in Rodney, Iowa. She volunteered her time as a leader for the Cub Scouts and Webelos. She loved every aspect of antiquing and had developed an impressive Coco-Cola collection over time. When time allowed, she found satisfaction in scrap booking with an emphasis on her family. Jeanette was well known as the kind smiling face that would greet you at Casey's door but never stopped working at the project she currently has at hand. She was a friend to many. Those survivors left to cherish the memory of Jeanette include a daughter and her husband, Kimberly and Mike Weber of Oto, Iowa; three sons and their wives, Jeffery and Karen Krusen of Mapleton, Benny and Gayle Krusen of Denver, Colo., and Aaron and Billie Krusen of Danbury, Iowa; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a special friend, Harry Woodward of Mapleton and his children, Heath and Heather; along with good friends, neighbors and co-workers. Along with her husband, Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Everett McClatchey; and a great-granddaughter, McKenzie Krusen.

DORIS I. NICKOLISEN, 70, of Smithland died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting, Iowa. Services were Thursday, December 13, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Smithland, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Little Sioux Township Cemetery. Doris was born icon Feb. 10, 1931, in Ticonic, Iowa, the daughter of Arnold and Merle (Aldrich) Richardson. She attended and graduated from Smithland High School in 1949. Doris married icon Miller Nickolisen on Oct. 21, 1949, in Smithland. Mrs. Nickolisen was a homemaker. Doris and Miller raised their five children on their farm near Smithland. She enjoyed working with the Smithland Museum and attending her children's and grandchildren's activities. She and Miller enjoyed traveling. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Smithland and was active in many women's groups. She taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years. Survivors include her husband, Miller; her father and stepmother, Arnold and Maxine Richardson of Mapleton, Iowa; a son and his wife, Darwin and Brenda Nickolisen of Alta, Iowa; four daughters, Kathy Nenin of Sioux City, Karla and her husband, David Lange of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Tricia and her husband, Doug Durst of Shawnee, Kan., and Amy and her husband, Dennis O'Neal of Hornick, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; a sister, Helen Tabke of Cheyenne, Wyo.; a brother and his wife, Ray and Louise Richardson of Clayton, N.M.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Merle; and a granddaughter, Rachael Lange.

HOPE MARIE BANTA, 27, of Oto died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident north of Danbury, Iowa. Funeral services were Tuesday December 6, 2001 at Mapleton, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon, Iowa. Hope Marie Banta was born icon Oct. 3, 1974, in Sioux City, to Doug Kirkpatrick and Donna Banta. She lived in the Oto, and Smithland, Iowa areas for many years. She was employed at MCI in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, the past two years as a telemarketer. Survivors include two young daughters, Kiali Marie Gotto and Alanna "Ali" Gotto, both at home; a sister, Tami Banta of Oto; a brother, Alan Reisdorph of Jay, Mo.; her mother and her husband, Donna and Dan Reisdorph of Anderson, Mo.; her father, Doug Kirkpatrick of Madison, Texas; maternal grandparents, Tuck and Kathy Banta of Oto; paternal grandparents, Don and Louise Kirkpatrick of Mapleton; a nephew, Cole Banta of Oto; three stepbrothers, Jeff, Eric and Jason Reisdorph, all of Tampa, Fla.; along with several other relatives and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her stepgrandfather, Lee Reisdorph; and her great-grandparents.

DR. EARL WENBOURNE, Class of 1942 - passed away November, 2001. Burial was in California. Possibly more information to come from classmates.

DR. JON LEE "JACK" REYNOLDS, 64, passed away November 6, 2001. Funeral services and burial was in Potsdam, New York. Jack was born icon in Anthon to Sam and Kathryn (Kent) Reynolds on January 9, 1937. He graduated at Anthon with the class of 1955. His first marriage was to Dorothy Meyer, also of Anthon, in May of 1955. The couple had three children; Robert, Marta, and Leslie. Jack's second marriage gave him another son, Michael. Jack attended Wayne State College, University of South Dakota, and Ohio State obtaining a Ph.D in organic chemistry. He was a professor at the University in Pottsdam, New York for many years. Survivors include his children, Marta and her family, and Michael both in New York state, and Leslie in Kentucky; two sister, Zona Bagnato of Rochester, NY, and Susie Reynolds of Ames, Iowa, along with nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his only brother Robert J. "Bob", and one son, Robert Jon.

KEVIN R. RUDE 43, of Oto died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at his residence. Services were held Thursday November 8, at the United Methodist Church in Smithland, Iowa, with the Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in the Oto Cemetery. Willman Funeral Home in Rodney, Iowa was in charge of arrangements. Kevin Royce Rude was born icon Jan. 20, 1958, in Sioux City, the son of Royce and Mary Jane (Meier) Rude. He graduated from Westwood High School in 1976. He worked for various farmers and owned his own truck and drove for various companies. He was a life long area resident. Survivors include his father, Royce Rude of Rodney; two brothers, Jim Rude of Hinton, Iowa, and Dan Rude of Sioux City; a sister, Nancy Jane Rude of Denver, Colo.; and his paternal grandmother, Zada Rude of Whiting, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his mother; paternal grandfather, Andrew K. Rude; and maternal grandparents, Arthur and Marie Meier.

DARYL F. FIXSEL 64, of Correctionville died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Pierson United Methodist Church in Pierson, Iowa, with the Rev. Bill Cotten officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Pierson. A Masonic service were held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, conducted by the Rutland Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Pierson, at Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa. Daryl was born icon May 22, 1937, in rural Pierson, the son of Louis and Opal (Davis) Fixsel. He was raised in the Pierson area and graduated from Pierson High School in 1955. He married icon Sandra Chicoine of Anthon on Dec. 30, 1967. Daryl and Sandra lived and farmed in the Pierson and Correctionville area. Daryl raised cattle and farmed for many years. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, Rutland Lodge of Pierson, Sioux City Consistory, Pierson Blue Ribbon 4-H Club, 4-H Youth Committee for eight years and was a 4-H livestock superintendent and served on the 4-H sub-committee and Golden Harvest Dealer. He was a member of Pierson United Methodist Church for many years. Survivors include his wife, Sandra of Correctionville; his mother, Opal Fixsel of Pierson; three daughters and their husbands, Debra and Ryan Wilcox of Correctionville, Denyse and Ron Meister of Kingsley and Joleen and Todd Zeutenhorst of Sioux City; and five grandchildren, Austin and Braden Wilcox, Megan and Brent Meister and Dalton Fixsel and his Mother-in-law Bertha Chicoine of Anthon. Daryl was preceded in death by his father, Louis.
