Garry Mehaffy

Garry W. Mehaffy, 53, of Burlington, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at his home.

Born Nov. 18, 1950, in Bur–lington, he was the son of Lewis and Glenna Rowe Mehaffy.

Mr. Mehaffy worked as an electrical tester for General Electric for 30 years. He worked in radar maintenance in Germany while serving in the Army during the Vietnam War.

He attended Burlington High School. He was a member of AMA and ATV Association. He enjoyed motocross and quad racing, hunting, fishing, camping, and mushroom and wild berry picking.

Survivors include one son, Scott Allen Mehaffy of Burlington; one daughter, Megan Anne Mehaffy of Burlington; his parents of Burlington; one brother, Dennis C. Mehaffy of Burlington; three sisters, Debbie Buechel and Diane Buechel, both of New London, Kathleen Smith of Sperry, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m.

A celebration of life will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel. Following services, Mr. Mehaffy's body will be cremated. Burial will be at a later date in Long Creek Cemetery , rural Danville.

A memorial has been established.

Albert Broeg Sr.

Albert L. Broeg Sr., 82, died following a long illness July 31, 2003, at Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio.

Born May 18, 1921, in Burlington, he was the son of Frank and Norma Louck Broeg. In 1944, he married Margaret Gall.

Mr. Broeg was a Navy veteran. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Elyria, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, June Douglass of Valley City, Ohio; two sons, Albert L. Broeg Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Robert Broeg of Perrysburg, Ohio; four granddaughters; five stepgrandsons; four sisters, Norma Jenkins of California, Bonnie Eaton of Burlington, Dora Mae Philpott of Seattle and Mary Lou Hummell of Orange, Calif.; and three brothers, Frank of Brush Prairie, Wash., Paul of West Burlington and Richard of Burlington.

A memorial service for Mr. Broeg was Aug. 8 at St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Charley Purvis

Charley L. Purvis, 76, of Lomax, Ill., died at 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville, Ill.

Born July 4, 1928, in Emden, Mo., he was the son of Joseph Russell and Edna Dean McGlaughlin Purvis. On June 30, 1955, he married Pauline Hoskins. On April 15, 1978, he married Delores Weaver. She died Jan. 8, 1996.

Mr. Purvis was a truck driver for more than 40 years, retiring from Churchill Truck Lines.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving from 1950 to 1952. He was a member of Teamsters Local 218 in Burlington, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Burlington and Oquawka Masonic Lodge in Oquawka, Ill.

Survivors include two daughters, Sheryl Jones of Lomax and Darla McGinity of Ozark, Ala.; one son, Les Purvis of West Burlington; 10 grandchildren; nine great–grandchildren; three sisters, Mae Watts of Burlington, Mary Simpson of Council Bluffs and LaVerne Setterquist of Rockford, Ill.; and one brother, Glen Purvis of California.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Thursday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, Ill.

The graveside service for Mr. Purvis with military rites conducted by Burlington VFW Post 10102 will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Carman Cemetery , Carman, lll., with the Rev. Bettyanna Bremer officiating.

Memorials have been established for Henderson County Home Health Care and the Lomax Ambulance.

Bessie Hemmingway

Bessie M. Hemmingway, 76, of Carthage, Ill., died of cancer at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at her nephew's home in Hamilton, Ill.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.

Memorials have been established for Golden's Point Church, Blessing Hospice of Hancock County and the Hancock County Piecemakers Quilting Group.

Daryl Garvey

Daryl George Garvey, 51, of Englewood, Colo., formerly of New London, died as the result of a traffic accident in New Jersey Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, at Hackensack Medical Center in Hackensack, N.J.

Born Jan. 17, 1953, in Waterloo, he was the son of George Edmond and Mary Ruth Kelley Garvey.

Mr. Garvey was a computer storage administrator for OAO Technology Solutions.

He was a 1971 graduate of New London High School, a 1977 graduate of Indian Hills Community College in computer maintenance and a 1988 graduate of Lewis University with a bachelor of arts degree. He was a Sun certified network administrator in 1999, Cisco certified network associate, Microsoft certified professional and Oracle 8 certified database administrator. He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed boating and flying and had his pilot's license.

Survivors include his mother of New London; three sisters, Georgia Horan of Urbandale, Charleen Horn of Burlington and Elizabeth Henderson of New London; five brothers, Donald Garvey of Lincoln, James Garvey of Bemidji, Minn., Michael Garvey of Pella, his twin, David Garvey and Kenneth Garvey, both of New London.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Garvey will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established for the computer science department at Indian Hills Community College.

Clara Dircks

Clara E. Dircks, 101, of Sanford, Fla., died Saturday morning, Aug. 14, 2004, at the Healthcare & Rehab of Sanford.

Born Aug. 14, 1903, in Letts, she was the daughter of Michael and Mary Reaney Blankenhorn. In 1924, she married Marion Wallace Feldman. He died in 1933. In 1952, she married Carl Dircks. He died in 1972.

Mrs. Dircks was a homemaker and had been active in farming.

She graduated from Letts High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames. She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed all kinds of crafts.

Survivors include three sons, Gale Feldman of Casselberry, Fla., Fred Feldman of Burlington and Wallace Feldman of Orange City, Fla.; two grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; two great–great–grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat–grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one stepdaughter, one stepson and one sister.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

The funeral for Mrs. Dircks will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kimberly Bowles officiating. Burial will be in the Letts Cemetery.

Gomer Owen

Gomer Owen, 90, of rural Columbus Junction, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Born Jan. 11, 1914, in Louisa County, he was the son of William and Edith Elizabeth Davis Owen. On Sept. 26, 1942, he married Iva Dietsch in Pleasant Grove.

Mr. Owen taught high school for several years in Olds and Dallas Center. In June 1946, he worked for Deere and Co. in the engineering department. He held various positions during his 33 years with the company, including tooling coordinator and engineering data investigator, before being named data coordinator, the position he held upon retiring June 29, 1979.

He attended Yankee School, graduated from Cotter School and studied two years at Parsons College, where he was a member of the Parson Traveling Chorus. He was a 1931 graduate of the University of Iowa with BA and BS degrees. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Louisa County Farm Bureau, John Deere Male Chorus, Moline Square Dancing Group, Cambrian Cemetery Board and Bethel Methodist Church in Moline, Ill. He also was a member of Cotter Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed working with Columbus Junction Theater projects, singing and writing poetry.

Survivors include his wife; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.

The funeral for Mr. Owen will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Stacy–Lewis Funeral Home, with Pastor David Stoufer officiating. Burial will be in Cambrian Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Agnes Campbell

Agnes G. Young Campbell, 87, of Keokuk, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Keokuk Nursing Center.

Born Jan. 8, 1916, in Carthage, Ill., she was the daughter of Marion Arthur and Bernice Gracie Landon Munson. She married Bruce Campbell.

Ms. Campbell was a housewife. She also operated a cleaning service for homes and offices.

She moved to Keokuk nine years ago from Macomb, Ill. She was of the Baptist faith. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles, flowers and plants.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Young of Hamilton, Ill., and Mark Campbell of Vancouver, Wash.; one daughter, Marilyn Vermillion of Portland, Ore.; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Marion Munson of Houston and Weldon Munson of Carthage; and one sister, Betty Strubinger Boyer of Carthage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, three brothers, three sisters, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to the time of service Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

The funeral for Ms. Campbell will be at 11 a.m. Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dale Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

Adian Westerbeck

Adian Lee Westerbeck died shortly after birth Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

He was the son of Eric Lee Gammons and Megan Ann Westerbeck.

Survivors include his parents; one half brother, Tevin Gammons; maternal grandparents, Lisa and Rick Bauer of Burlington; paternal grandparents, Diana Cooper of Burlington and Larry Gammons of Florida; maternal great–grandmother Jean Westerbeck, and maternal great–grandfather Harold Bauer.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great–grandfather, maternal great–grandmother and paternal great–grandparents.

The graveside committal service and interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Aspen Grove Cemetery Baby Land with the Rev. Gerald E. Stouvenel officiating.

The Hass Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Arveda Smith

Arveda "Bea" Smith, 84, of Amory, Miss., died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at Countrywood Plantation Care Center in Mantachie, Miss.

Born Oct. 2, 1918, in Clark County, Mo., she was the daughter of Walter Clarance and Elizabeth Jane Austin Forquer. On Sept. 26, 1960, she married Herbert J. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker.

She lived in Missouri, Iowa, Illinois and Monroe County for several years. She enjoyed sewing and flower gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Rossi of Amory and Roger Rossi of Hereford, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 34 great–grandchildren; 13 great–great–grandchildren; one brother, Jesse Forquer of Wyaconda, Mo.; and several other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and three brothers.

The funeral for Mrs. Smith was Monday at Vigen Memorial Home in Kahoka, Mo., with the Rev. Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial was in Kahoka Cemetery.
