ROMA HLADIK 88, of Anthon died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Anthon with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Anthon. A prayer service was Friday October 26, at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Roma Agnes Hladik was born icon Dec. 19, 1912, near Cushing, Iowa, the daughter of Worden B. and Nellie (Moore) Whyte. She grew up and was educated in the Cushing area, graduating from Cushing High School in 1930. She furthered her education by attending college for one years at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She married icon D. Walter Hladik on June 22, 1932, in Cushing, Iowa. The couple then moved to the Anthon area where they began their life's work in farming. They retired in 1973 and moved into Anthon. Walter died Nov. 19, 1991. Roma was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Anthon where she played the piano for church services including weddings and funerals. She also sang in the church choir. She felt a deep appreciation for music and passed that skill onto her children. She found pleasure in her garden and the flowers she grew, but her greatest love was found in her family. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Jeanette and Fred Heinse of Anthon, Linda and Stuart Drummond of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Roger and Marilyn Hladik of Anthon; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mabel Whyte of Davenport, Iowa; two nephews, Drew Bedwell of Grass Valley, Calif., and Kenneth Whyte of Davenport, Iowa; and a niece, Janice Kohout of Maryland; along with other relatives, neighbors and good friends. She was also preceded in death by two sons, John Herman Hladik, who was stillborn, and Frank Hladik; a grandson, Fred Heinse Jr., and a brother, Vearl Whyte

CAROLINE ETLER, 89, of Anthon died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in Correctionville, Iowa following a lengthy illness. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Anthon with the Rev. Kent Kastler officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. on Friday evening, followed by an Eastern Star service at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon. Caroline Anna Etler was born icon June 29, 1912, near Lawton, Iowa, to James and Friedarieka (Ronnau) Drossel. She graduated from Climbing Hill High School in 1931. She married icon Ralph B. Etler on Dec. 31, 1931, in Sioux City. The couple lived and farmed southwest of Anthon until retiring in 1974 when they moved into Anthon. Ralph died April 24, 1977. Caroline had been a resident of the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center since 1996. Caroline enjoyed baking, gardening, painting, woodworking and was an active volunteer in many community groups. She had been honored as a nursing home volunteer and received the Rose Award (Recognition of Service Excellence) for community involvement for the Eastern Star. She received her 50 year membership in 1994 from the Thomma Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Anthon United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela E. Fitchner of Allen, Texas; two sisters, Gertrude Yockey and Margaret Schwarz and her husband, Alvin, all of Anthon, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Drossel of Savannah, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Carey Drossel, Arthur Drossel and James Drossel; a sister, Frances Etler; and a sister-in-law, Dakota Drossel.

PAUL HANS ANDERSON 86, of Correctionville, passed away Monday October 15, 2001 following a lenghty illness. Services were held Thursday Oct. 18, with burial in Correctionville Cemetery. Mr. Anderson was born icon Jan 29, 1915 near Correctionville to Nels and Marie (Madsen)Anderson and was a life long farmer until his retirement in 1970. On Jan. 31, 1946 he married icon Dorothy Knaack. Survivors include his wife, two daughters and their husbands; Shirley and Cleo McCall of Willingboro, New Jersey, and Linda and Allen Chandler of Omaha, Nebraska, two grandkids, one great grandchildren, Three brothers; Nels Anderson Jr, and Homer Anderson, both of Anthon, and Kenneth Anderson and his wife Phyllis of Moville. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elmer and Holger.

DENISE RAE (DOSE) PRY, 47 of Milford, IA passed away after a battle with cancer Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001. Services were held Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at 1 p.m., at Turner Funeral Home, Milford. Denise Rae was born icon in Onawa, Iowa, on Nov. 13, 1953, to Wilbert and Carol (Thompson) Dose. She was a 1972 graduate of Maple Valley High School in Mapleton, Iowa. On April 29, 1973, Denise married icon Bill Pry of Correctionville, Iowa, and two children were born icon to this marriage. She had a servant's heart and was passionate in her love for the Lord. She was a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Bill; their two children, Tiffanie and her husband, Casey Call, and Corey Pry, all of Milford; her mother, Carol Dose of Mapleton; her brother and his wife, Gary and Mary Dose of Danbury, Iowa; and her sisters and their husbands, Jolene and Marc Uhl of Danbury, and Lori and Bob Davis of Columbus Junction, Iowa. She also leaves three nieces, Jessica, Ashley and Shawna of Danbury; three nephews, Jack, Jeremy and Garrett of Danbury; Bill's mother, Betty Pry of Correctionville; and his brothers and sisters and their families. She was preceded in death by her father, Wilbert Dose, and his twin brother, Gilbert, and her father-in-law, Lee Pry.

PAUL WARREN KUENY 78, of Oto died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital. Services were Wednesday October 10, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury, Iowa, with the Rev. Bill Schreiber officiating. Military honors were presented by the Little Sioux Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9124 of Oto. Burial was in the Danbury Catholic Cemetery. Paul was born icon April 23, 1923, in Danbury, the second son of 17 children of Will and Anna (Price) Kueny. He attended high school in Newcastle, Neb. In 1944, he joined the United States Navy, where upon completion of his basic training, Paul served his country aboard the destroyer USS Dewey. He saw action in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Following the end of World War II, he returned to Sloan, Iowa, where he met Ellen Hausen. They married icon in 1951. Paul farmed in northwest Iowa for 12 years. He worked for the Farm Service Co. for eight years in Woodbury and Lyon counties, and for Simonsen Feeds from 1976 to 1983. From 1984 to 1995, he worked on the weed commission in Woodbury County. Seven years ago, Paul suffered a stroke which caused the need for him to reside at the nursing home. He was a lifetime member of Little Sioux Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9124 of Oto, where he served as a past adjutant and commander. Those survivors left to cherish Paul's memory include his mother, Anna Kueny of Danbury; his children, Laura Kueny of San Diego, Calif., Bob Kueny and his wife, Denise, and Barbara Walker, all of Norman, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four brothers and their wives, John and Martha of Allerton, Iowa, Leo and Josie of Orange County, Calif., Richard and Kelly of Sioux City, and Vincent and Judy of Alta, Iowa; five sisters, Marian Sand and her husband, Eugene of Syracuse, Neb., Darlene Galkowski and her husband, Robert of Newport, R.I., Charlotte Heath and Betty Lewis, both of Sioux City, and Rita Eisner and her husband, Paul of Sacramento, Calif.; and many other relatives, neighbors and ood friends. Paul was preceded in death by his father; a son, Warren; two brothers, Roy and Robert; and two sisters, Marilyn Jordan and Pauline Wunderlich.

Former resident and Principal at Anthon Oto High School dies. FRANK E. SAILORS 75, passed away on Friday, Sept. 28, 2001 in Ohio after a brief battle with cancer. Mr. Sailors and his wife resided in Madison Township, Ohio at the time of his death. Frank E. Sailors was born icon Feb. 18, 1926 in Rosalie, NE to Garl and Elsie (Keyser) Sailors. He received his higher education at Wayne State College, Wayne, NE and his Masters in School Administration from Colorado State. He was a teacher, coach, and school administrator for 37 years in Iowa and Nebraska schools. He was Principal at Anthon-Oto High School for twelve years; from 1962 until 1974. He retired in 1986 to Arizona. He married icon Jane Taggart on May 30, 1951. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Epiphany, 10th and Douglas Streets, Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 10:00 A.M. Cards may be sent to 2351 Haines Rd, Madison, Ohio 44057 He is survived by his wife Jane, of 50 years; children, Mickey and her husband Roger Lloyd of Sioux City; Dr. Frank Sailors of Perry, OH; Mary and husband Phillip Calvillo of Perry, OH; and Amy Sailors of Madison, OH; Eight grandchildren; Three brothers Guy and Hillman of Rosalie, NE and Keith of Le Mars, IA; two sisters, Lois Overton of Stuart, FL and Doris Babcock of Sioux City, IA, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.

LEO EICKHOLT 70, of Moville, and formerly of Anthon passed away on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001. Services were Monday October 1, 2001 with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, IA. Mr. Eickholt was born icon October 23, 1930 in Anthon to Theodore and Maire (Meyer) Eickholt. He grew up in the Anthon area and worked on the family farm until he was 17. He married icon Alva Dickson on May 19, 1951 in Sioux City. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 and then joined the 185th Air Guard in Sioux City, retiring as Chief Master Sergeant in 1990 He was also emplyed with the Civil Service as an avionics supervisor from 1953 until 1984 with the 185th Air Guard. The couple made their home in Sioux City, Lawton, and most recently moved to Moville in 2001. They wintered in Casa Grande, AZ.Survivors include his wife; two daughters adn their husbands Victoria and Marvin Menzenberg of Sioux City, and Catherine and Jim Gibson of Moville; three sons, Larry and wife Helen of Sioux City, Stuar and his wife Sandy of Moville, and Leo Jr. of Omaha; two sisters, Pauline Dugan of Kingsley and Agnes and husband Ron Uhl of Mapleton; 11 Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother Mary Schriner.

RICHARD "RICH" ROARK 71, former Mayor of Anthon, passed away Thursday September 27, 2001 at a Sioux City hospital. Services were held on Monday October 1, 2001 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion McNiff Post 389. Richard Luverne was born icon November 11, 1929 to Edward and Lena (Petersen) Roark near Correctionville, and graduated from Anthon High School with the Class of 1947. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, worked for the telephone company, and retired in 1990 from the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Services after 29 years. On November 10, 1955 he married icon Margaret Forch, daughter of Albert and Margaret (Leahy) Forch at St.Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon. Rich and his wife Margaret owned the Spot Light Tavern, Marge's Place and later the Cozy Inn throughout their married icon life. Rich also farmed for many years and after his retirement in 1990 from the U.S.D.A. he sold cable television for Douglas Cable, and later for Comserv LTD selling both cable and satellite TV. He served as Anthon's Mayor from 1989 until 1999 when he had to retire due to poor health. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and the Anthon American Legion McNiff Post #389. He was also a commisioner for the Woodbury County Soil and Water Conservation and was a committee member for the 911 Commission and the County Landfill. He enjoyed sports, and bowled for several years on different leagues. Sponsored a slow-pitch softball team for several years and enjoyed playing and sponsoring his family's volleyball team and hosting volleyball tournaments here at Anthon. Survivors include his wife Margaret, five daughters Carole and husband Mike Libke of Correctionville, Linda Kellogg and special friend Clifford Carmen of Anthon, Barb and husband Bart Byriel of Estherville, IA, Connie and husband Scott Yockey of Anthon, and Susan and husband Dale Bradley of Estherville, IA. 12 grandchildren, a step grandchild, three great grandchildren, two sisters; Margaret Adler of Anthon, and Juanita Richabaugh and husband Everett of Belvidere, IL, a sister-in-law, Pat Roark of Anthon, along with many other relatives and many friends. Rich was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, and a brother; Raymond Roark.

GERALD R. "GARY" MAHRT SR. 60, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001 in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Gary MahrtA Funeral Mass was held Friday, Sept 28, at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Brookfield. Interment was in Wisconsin Memorial Cemetery. Gary was born icon October 22, 1940 to John "Jack" and Dorothy (Dicks) Mahrt in Mapleton, IA. He graduated from Anthon High School in 1959 and joined the Navy right out of High School. After his tour of duty and discharge from the service, he worked as an Executive in the wholesale cabinet business for many years. Gary was a man who lived life to the fullest. He loved his wife, children and grandchildren passionately. He had recently retired to "God's Country" in Montana. Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Dawn; children: Christine, Colleen, Gerald R.II and his wife Stephanie, and CarrieJean and her husband Kurt Kveen, all of Brookfield, WI; grandchildren; Sara, J.R., Thomas, Kathleen, Rachel, Kristen and Angela. His mother Dorothy Mahrt of Battle Creek, IA, and his father John "Jack" and his wife Darlene Mahrt, Sioux City, Iowa. One brother, Doug and wife Anna Mahrt of Anthon, and sisters Valerie Mahrt of Anthon, and Vicky and her husband Denny Mills, of Valle Cito, California, and his mother-in-law Eugenie "Ma", many nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law Thomas James Devine and a Brother-in-law James M. Devine. Any memorials appreciated to Children's Hospital Foundation, M.D., 3050 P.O. Box 1997, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53201. "REST NOW, PAPA, WE LOVE YOU."

Former Anthon resident BERNICE THEOBALD CRABB 83, of Sepulveda, California passed away on Monday, Sept. 24, 2001. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001 in California. Bernice was born icon April 17, 1918 to Nick and Celia (Topf) Theobald in Minnesota. The family moved to the Anthon area around 1920 and farmed west of Anthon. She married icon William Crabb in California and the couple had one son; Michael. William passed away in 1999. Survivors include her son Michael and his wife Anna, in New Jersey, one granddaughter Anna Crabb, and two sisters, Margaret of Cape Gerardo, Missouri, Alice Galvin of Sioux City, and two brothers, Father Vincent Theobald, SVD, retired, and Dick and his wife Mary Theobald of rural Anthon. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, and one brother Gerald Theobald.

MAURICE A. "TOAD" TREIBER 84, of Alamo, TX and a former area resident died Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Treiber was born icon Oct. 8, 1916 in HIghmore, S.D. the son of August and Elizabeth (Koll) Treiber. He moved with his family to Battle Creek, IA when he was 2 years old. He married icon Jennie Wonder on Feb. 6, 1941 at Danbury, IA. The couple farmed in the Danbury area, and later in the Smithland and Hornick area. In 1960 the family moved to Sioux City and Mr. Treiber worked as commissionman selling and buying hogs. Many of the area farmers may remember Toad in that capacity. He retired from the Siouxland Livestock Commission Company in 1987 and he and his wife moved to Texas in 1990. "Toad" enjoyed raising horses and horse shows as well as being very involved in 4-H Clubs, golf and bowling leagues. He also enjoyed playing cards. Survivors include his wife Jennie of Alamo, four daughters, Margaret and husband Jim Cunningham of Sioux City and former Anthon residents, Teresa Treiber of Circle Pines, MN, Barbara and husband Jim Hansen of New Brighton, MN and Janet Treiber of Blaine, MN, a brother Ralph and wife Pat Treiber of Sioux City and a sister, Jean Smith of California. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Marjorie Bennette and Violet Hegarty.

ELLA H. RENNEKER 98, of Sioux City died Monday Sept. 24, 2001 following a lengthy illness. Services were Wed. Sept. 26, with burial in Fairfield Cemetery, Rock Branch, near Correctionville, Iowa. Mrs. Renneker was born icon Oct. 15, 1902 to Peter L and Hedvig (Peterson) Madsen, in Anthon, IA. She married icon Frank D Renneker on April 5, 1939, in LeMars, IA. They farmed near Anthon until her husband's death April 4, 1950 in Anthon. Ella moved to Sioux City in 1967. She enjoyed being a homemaker, music and reading. Survivors include three nieces and their husbands, Lillian & Clyde Savage and Joyce and Albert McCormick all of Sioux City, and Jean and Robert Bradshaw of Omaha; three nephews and their wives, Lynne & Bonnie Behrens, of Sioux City, Donald and Joyce Andersen of Chicago, IL and Larry and Barbara Madsen of rural Anthon. Ella was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers and five sisters.
