DR LEONARD CAVANAUGH 74, of Hornick, formerly of Anthon, died Saturday, September 15, 2001, at his residence. Memorial services were held Wednesday, September 19, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon with burial at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of arrangements. Visitation was on Tuesday, September 18, from 2:00 to 8:30pm with the family present from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 8:30. Dr. Cavanaugh was born icon March 19, 1927 in Carroll, Iowa, the son of William and Margaret (Leonard) Cavanaugh. He graduated from Lohrville High School in 1944 and served in the Medical Corp during WWII. In 1950 he married icon Ellen Maudsley. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1952 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He practiced veterinary medicine in the Anthon area from 1952 until 1970. He became a Kent Feed dealer in 1960 and operated Cavanaugh Feed & Grain in Anthon and Rodney during the 1970's. In 1973 he bought a feedlot near Climbing Hill and custom fed cattle for several years. In 1981 he became a federal livestock inspector at the Sioux City Stockyards and the Track Veterinary at Atokad Park. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon and a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion, Anthon Community Club, and the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. Survivors include one son and his wife, Bill and Susie Cavanaugh of Clear Lake, IA; six daughters: Mary Barnes of Colorado Springs, CO; Julie and her husband, Jere Jackson of Rapid City, SD; Colleen and her husband, Fred Bortscheller of Le Mars, IA; Kerry and her husband, Stan Huffman of Correctionville, IA; Beth and her husband, Dr. Peter Jansen of Orange Park, FL; and Molly and her husband, Robert Wickert of Omaha, NE; two sisters: Marcella and her husband, Dr. Walter Judson of Indianapolis, IN; and Marilyn and her husband, Leo Mullin of Williamston, MI; a brother and his wife, Clement and Clara Cavanaugh of Helena, MT; a sister-in-law, Jean Cavanaugh of Great Bend, KS, 20 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a close friend, Selma Mills of Anthon, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Daniel Cavanaugh, a sister, Sr. Pierre Cavanaugh, OSB, and three brothers, Dr. John Cavanaugh, Paul Cavanaugh and Dr. Clair Cavanaugh.[9-16-01]

Mother of Anthon resident passed away on July 19, 2001. MARY WALSH 97, of Ponca, Nebraska passed away at the Elms Health Care Center in Ponca, NE. Services were held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Ponca with burial at St. John's Cemetery, rural Jackson, NE. Mrs. Walsh was born icon July 14, 1904 near Willis, NE and on February 13, 1923 married icon Joseph P. Walsh in Ponca. They were farmers. Mr. Walsh died March 4, 1968 and Mary remained on the farm until 1985 when she moved to Ponca. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and playing cards. Son John "Jack" Walsh and his wife Glenna live west of Anthon.

FRANCES EVELYN ETLER 82, of Anthon passed away July 18, 2001 at Correctionville Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Anthon on Saturday - July 21, 2001. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Frances was born icon August 7, 1919 near Lawton to James and Friederieka (Ronnau) Drossel. On October 2, 1937, Frances married icon Wayne A. Etler. Wayne and Frances farmed in the Anthon area until their retirement in the late 1980's. Wayne passed away on October 15, 1989. She was a volunteer with many groups and at the nursing home and enjoyed baking, traveling, painting, and gardening. Survivors include her daughter Karen and husband 'Larry' Huffman of Sioux City; two sons, Jim of Kremmling, Colorado and Larry and his wife, JoEllen of Moville; nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gertrude Yockdy, Caroline Etler and Margaret Schwartz, all of Anthon, and a sister-in-law Mary Drossell of Missouri. Frances was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers, Carey ARthur and James Drossel. {7-19-01}

BEAU PETERSEN 18, a highly gifted athlete, scholar, and a 2001 graduate of Maple Valley - Anthon-Oto High School was fatally injured in an accident Friday July 13, 2001. Beau was born icon on May 18, 1983, the son of Bruce E. and Roxann (Sargent) Petersen of rural Correctionville. Services were held Tuesday, July 17, at the Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto High School gym. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery, near Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Beau, who was a star athlete in football, basketball, baseball and golf was very well liked by everyone. He was as one person said "just a really neat guy who always treated everyone with respect, no matter who they were." He enjoyed being with his friends, playing cards, fishing, hunting, and had planned on attending college this fall. Survivors left to cherish his memory include his parents, his younger sister Libby; his maternal Grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Roger Bales of Sioux City, IA, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and a TON of friends - young and old. He was preceded in death by his paternal Grandparents Elmer and Garnet Petersen of Anthon, who would have been VERY PROUD of the young man Beau was. A scholarship fund has been established, and any memorials may be directed to the scholarship fund, and sent to the family.

GRACEN HAYWORTH 98, a life long resident of rural Anthon passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Mercy Medical Health Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Gracen was born icon April 2, 1903 to Thomas E. and Margaret E. (Coon) Hayworth. When he was 8 days old, his mother died. He was cared for by his aunt Mary Coon who in 1905 married icon his father. Gracen married icon Mary R. Walling, daughter of Henry and Rosa (Taft) Walling on September 5, 1923. Gracen and Mary farmed in the Anthon area all their married icon lives. They were members of the United Church of Christ at Anthon. Mary passed away in 1990. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 14th at the United Church of Christ, Anthon. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Eugene and wife Bonnie of rural Anthon, and Herman and wife Mickey of Fair Oaks, California, a sister, Mrs Charles (Velma) Oertel of Anthon, and a brother, Tom Hayworth of Lyons, Nebraska, 5 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, numerous neighbors, friends and other relatives. Preceding him in death was his wife Mary, and his father and mother, and his step mother Mary, brother Vester and sister Mrs. Harold (Edna) Munsen.

ROSIE L. CADWELL 95, former Oto resident passed away on Sunday July 8, 2001 in Sioux City. Services were Thursday July 12, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosie was born icon in Oto, Iowa on June 11, 1906, the daughter of Benjamin F and Minnie M (McNear) Dicus. She married icon Floyd B Cadwell on October 20, 1934, in Elk Point, SD. She had been employed with the Sioux City Schools Board of Education for many years, retiring in 1971. Her Husband; Floyd passed away in April of 1990, in Sioux City. Rosie was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed cooking. Survivors include two sons and their wives, Roger and Janet Cadwell and Wilber " Bill" and Myrna Tuttle. A Daughter, Barbara Baxter of Mitchell S.D.; Two sisters, Jennie Admire of Joplin, Mo and Jane Barnett of Sioux City; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Bill and Al Dicus; and two sisters, Hazel Burright and Della Admire.

GRETCHEN MARGARET COON, 86, formerly of Oto died Thursday, July 5, in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa at the Embassy Care Center where she had been a resident since 1995. Services were held Saturday at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa. Mrs. Coon was born icon July 31, 1914 in Milo, Iowa to Alvin N. and Ella Ethel (Tallman) Oldaker. She graduated from Milo High School in 1932. She married icon Kenneth W Coon on April 28, 1934. They farmed near Oto, Iowa until they retired in 1972. Kenneth passed away in 1987. She was in charge of the lunch program at Oto Schools for many years. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Allenson of Anoka, MN, and Ellen and her husband, Marvin Drenkhahn of Mapleton; six grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Lorraine and Raymond Shoemaker of Milo, IA. She was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Graveside services were held for FRANCIS G. HEATH of Lagoona Hills, CA on Saturday, June 23, 2001 at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Anthon. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion of Anthon. Francis passed away last December 4, 2000 in California. Francis was the son of Ralph and Bessie (Ping) Heath. His parents preceded him in death. PAULINE PITKIN ROMAN 101, Anthon resident for many, many years passed away on Tuesday June 19, 2001 at Moberly, Missouri following a brief illness. Memorial services will be held on Wed. June 27, at the Anthon United Methodist Church. Pauline was born icon in Madrid, Iowa on January 15, 1900 to William and Cora (Carter) McBeath. She graduated from Anthon High School in 1916. She attended college in Minnesota for two years and taught school in Minnesota, South Dakota, and at Anthon. She married icon Roy Pitkin, June 26, 1921 in the home of her parents. Roy and Pauline were members of the Anthon Methodist Church. Pauline also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star. Roy passed away in 1957 at the age of 63. In 1976 Pauline married icon Vernon F Roman. Vernon also preceded her in death. Pauline and Roy's children include Barbara Jane (Weirich), Priscilla Anne (Gilbert) Helen Janet (Johnson) and Roy MacBeth. PAUL P. DIXON 81, former Anthon resident, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2001 in Sterling Colorado. Services were held on Monday, May 21, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Sterling. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Sterling, Colorado.

ROZELLA "BABE" LILLIE 90, life-long Oto, Iowa resident passed away on Memorial Day, May 28, 2001 at the Correctionville Nursing & Rehab Center. Services were Thursday May 31, at the Oto United Church of Christ with Rev. Karen Handke officiating. Burial was in Oto Cemetery, Oto, Iowa. Babe was born icon Feb. 11, 1911, in Oto Iowa the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Livermore) Downing. She was raised and educated in the Oto area. On June 5, 1926 she married icon Harold Otto Lillie in Onawa, IA. They made their home in the Oto area. Harold passed away Oct. 16, 1976. Babe was a member of the Oto United Church of Christ, Mite Society, American Legion Auxiliary Henry McKenna Unit of Oto, and the Senior Citizens in Rodney, Iowa. She enjoyed baking. Survivors include four sons; Hollis and wife Jan of Osceola, NE; Gerald 'Gary' and Joy of Fostoria, IA, Richard 'Dick' & Retha of Sioux City, IA and Raphael 'Ray' & Dianna of Mankato, MN; Two daughters Marjorie King of Kingsley and Ila McDermott of Oto. 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Ida Wilcox of Sioux City. Babe was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Tom McDermott, and Roger King; three grand daughters, a great-grandson, five brothers; and four sisters.

BOB GOTTO 54, of Anthon, Iowa passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2001 after a short battle with cancer. Services were held at the Evangelical Church in Moville, Iowa and burial was in Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Anthon. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion McNiff Post 389 of Anthon and the VFW, Little Sioux Valley Post 9124 of Oto, Iowa. Bob was born icon June 18, 1946 in Oto, Iowa and was the son of Henry and Joyce (Gapen) Gotto. He was raised in the Oto area and graduated from Anthon-Oto High School in 1964. On December 17, 1964 he married icon Reta Jean Fisher in Ida Grove, Iowa. He served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed in California. He was employed with Marx Trucking out of Sioux City for several years. He most recently drove truck for Mike Nepper. Bob was a member of the VFW, Little Sioux Valley Post 9124 of Oto, and the American Legion, McNiff Post 389 of Anthon. He enjoyed singing, playing harmonica, fishing and working on cars. Survivors include his mother of Anthon, a son and his wife, Rob and JoAnn of Sioux Center, IA, two daughters and their husbands; Rachelle and Eric Polkinghorn, of Moville, and Robyn and Lee Hirst of Sioux City; Two brothers, Bill and wife Chris of Anthon, and Nick of Anthon as well as one sister of Anthon, Helen Book; five grandchildren and several foster grandchildren. Bob was preceded in death by his father.

SYLVIA (Mrs. Frank) ASHLEY 87, of Correctionville, Iowa passed away on May 3, 2001. Services were held Monday May 7 and burial was in Oak Hill Cememtery at Anthon, Iowa. Sylvia was the daughter of Anton and Anna Paulsen and was born icon in Bronson, Iowa on July 3, 1913. On February 2, 1935 she married icon Frank Ashley, son of Bert Baker and Austa Drake Ashley.They farmed northwest of Anthon for many years. Survivors include her husband Frank, son Brian and wife Sheryl Ashley, and a daughter Sonia and her husband Paul Chasteen; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant daughter Janice Kay.

LOLA MAE (CLOUD) ROSAUER 62, an Anthon High School alumni from the Class of '57, died Monday April 9, 2001. Funeral services were held Thursday April 12 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon. Interment was in Mt. St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Anthon. Lola was born icon December 15, 1938 at Anthon, and was the daughter of Loyal & Rose (Sevening) Cloud. On June 11, 1957, Lola was united in marriage to Walter "Bud" Rosauer in Anthon. They farmed in the Danbury area. She was a member of St Mary's Catholic Church in Danbury. Survivors include her husband, Bud, two daughters, Cindy and husband Larry Huss of Hornick, Iowa and Gwen Dean of North Port, Florida; one son, James "Bart" and his wife Mary, of Olathe, Kansas. Seven grandchildren and many other relatives, neighbors and good friends. Lola was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one daughter, Sandra Rosauer.
