JOAN F. WHITE 73, of Anthon passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at the home of her daughter, Marlene & Cecil McKenna in Barling, AR. Funeral services were held on Monday, January 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa. Joan was born icon August 2, 1927, at Danbury to Thomas & Genevieve (Gahan) Fitzpatrick. She graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic High School in Danbury, IA. On February 18, 1946 Joan married icon Harold R. White. He passed away June 5, 1995. Joan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She sold Watkins products for several years. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed coffee time with friends. Survivors include three daughters and their husbands, Colleen & Bill McKenna of Garretson, SD, Marlene & Cecil McKenna of Barling, AR, and Pat & Dan Deeds of Correctionville, IA, a daughter-in-law, Sally White of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister & her husband, Eileen & Wyman Leinbaugh of Holstein, IA; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Paul at birth, and John White; three brothers, Leo in infancy, Thomas, and Bill Fitzpatrick; and a sister, Denice Gray.

NORMA JEAN CLAUSEN 75, of Anthon passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2001 at a Sioux City hospital. Services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, January 6th at the Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, IA. Mrs. Clausen was born icon October 3, 1925, in Soldier, Iowa. She was the daughter of Alfred and Anna (Tollufsen) Benson. She graduated from Pierson HIgh School, Pierson, IA in 1944. On October 19, 1952 she married icon William Clausen. They made their home in the Correctionville, and Anthon areas. Norma worked as a Nurses Aid for several years at the Care Center in Correctionville. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and The American Legion Auxiliary. Norma enjoyed reading, collecting poetry, cooking and baking. Her husband William passed away on August 25, 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Linda, and her husband of Sioux City, Nancy Clausen of Anthon; Three sons, Bill and wife Vickie of Alta, IA, Bob of Anthon, and Tom of Parker, Colorado; six grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Dorothy & LeRoy Struve, of Pierson, Iowa; three brothers and their wives, Bernard & Ruby Benson, Marvin & Norma Benson, all of Pierson, and Donald & Anita Benson of California, Maryland; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William, her parents, one son Paul, and a brother Ernest Benson.

SANDRA (WONDER) BERTELSEN DEGROOT 56, of Milford, IA passed away November 30, 2000 after battling cancer for almost 5 years. Sandy, was born icon to Paul and Mildred (Petit) Wonder at Battle Creek, IA on November 30, 1944 and she graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1962. She attended college at Ankeny and obtained a degree in Health Care Administration. She married icon Gary Bertelsen on Sept. 15, 1962 in Battle Creek, IA and the family made their home south and east of Anthon for several years before moving to Milford in the early 80's. Gary died at Milford in 1983. On September 7, 1991, she married icon Doug DeGroot at Milford. She was the Administrator of the nursing homes in Milford, and Lake Park, Iowa during her working career. She was a past member of the Sweet Adelines, and enjoyed her family. Survivors include her husband; two daughters Shelley Willson of Spirit Lake and Tracey and husband Joe Lemire of Menominee, Michigan; a stepson, Brian DeGroot and friend Jean; her mother Mildred Wonder of Lake Park; a brother, Ronald and wife Rose Wonder of Arnolds Park; a sister, Lois Krayenhagen of Spirit Lake; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father Paul Wonder, her first husband Gary Bertelsen, and an only son, Tim Bertelsen. Services were held December 2, 2000 at the Faith Evangelical Free Church in Spirit Lake, IA and interment was in Lakeview Gardens Cemetery at Spirit Lake.

EILEEN CALLAGHAN 81, of Oto, Iowa passed away Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at Oto. Services were held Saturday December 16 at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton, Iowa. Burial was in Willow Township Cemetery, Holly Springs, Iowa. Eileen Catherine was born icon June 2, 1919, at Oto, the daughter of Jarvis and Letha (Moss) Miller. She grew up in the Oto and Smithland area and graduated from Oto High School. On February 12, 1938 she was united in marriage to Orval Wayne Callaghan in Mapleton. The couple farmed in the Oto area. Orval passed away February 3, 1992. Eileen enjoyed camping with her husband and friends and was a member of the Mapleton Camping Club. She and Orval wintered in Texas for nearly 30 years. She also enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes and had a special talent for baking cookies. She also enjoyed fishing, reading, darts, shuffle board, old western movies, and talking on the phone with friends. Her greatest enjoyment was in her family though. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands; Nancy & Carl McGrain of Mapleton, Jane & Dick Thomas of Salix, Iowa, and Susan and Chuck Mercer of Aurelia, Iowa; Eleven grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Evelyn Clark of Fort Collins, CO, and Vivian Dawdy of Holly Springs, Iowa, along with other relatives and many good friends and neighbors. Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one daughter, Shirley Porter.

CHARLES R. PETERSON 56, of Smithland died Sunday, December 10, 2000 at his residence. Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto on Thursday, December 14, 2000, with burial in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery in Smithland, Iowa. Charles was born icon Christmas Day, 1943 at Onawa, Iowa. He was the son of Axel and Della (Lyman) Peterson. On July 7, 1962, he was united in marriage to Helen "Wimpy" Shook. He was a truck driver, mechanic, business owner, and farmer. From 1979 to 1984 he and his wife owned and operated Wimpy's Bar in Rodney, Iowa. In 1985 they moved into Smithland. Charlie was a past member of the Eagles Club. Survivors include his wife Helen, Three sons and their wives, Steve & Dee of Sibley, IA, Jeff & Liz of Smithland, IA, and David & Tiffany of Northport, Alabama; two daughters and their husbands, Cheryl & Ron Weber of Smithland, and Kathy & Steve Dewald of Sioux City, IA; his mother, Della Peterson of Onawa, 12 grandchildren, four brothers; Jim of Council Bluffs, Carl "Burt" of Council Bluffs, Donny & wife Suzie of Washington state, and Jerry & wife Carol of Ralston, Nebraska; three sisters, Anna Marie Bobier of Sioux Falls, SD, Ruth & husband Kent Cattlett of Omaha, NE and Mary Means of Decorah, Iowa along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends. He was preceded in death by his father.

FRANCIS G. HEATH 52, of Lagoona Hills, California and formerly of the Oto and Anthon area died unexpectedly on Monday, December 4, 2000. Mr. Heath was born icon September 12, 1948, in Anthon to Ralph and Bessie Heath. After attending school in Oto, he joined the US Air Force, serving for ten years. In 1990 Francis returned to Iowa from California, working at the Kingsley Iowa Farmer's Elevator. He went back to California this past June. Survivors include four brothers, John & wife Mona of Phoenix, AZ, Richard & Delores, of Anthon, Ronnie & Karen of Long Beach, CA, and Dennis of Oceano, CA; four sisters, Norma and husband Donald Hoffman of Stickney, SD, LouAnn Arnold of Sioux City, Delores and husband Bill Collins of Kingsley, IA, and Darlene and husband Syd Coulas of Alberta, Canada; a special friend, Robin Roberts of Lagoona Hills, CA, and several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Francis was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Kenneth, Donald, and Jimmy; and two sisters, LilaBelle, and Bonnie. Memorial services will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Anthon on Saturday, December 16, 2000 at 10:30 AM.

MARTHA STERRETT 99, of Anthon, passed away Friday, December 8, 2000, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa, where she had been a resident since 1998. Burial was in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. Martha was born icon Dec 1, 1901, to Jens and Christina (Olesen) Paulsen and moved with her family to Anthon at the age of four. Martha graduated from AHS in 1920 as valedictorian and furthered her education at the Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, IA. She married icon Walter Sterrett on Feb 14, 1922, in Sioux City. They farmed near Anthon until they retired into town in the mid 1960's. Walter passed away December 20, 1969. Martha enjoyed sewing, gardening, growing house plants, making afghans, playing cards, besides being active in her church, the Legion Auxiliary, and 4-H. Survivors include two daughters; Marion Speer, of Sioux Center, IA and Shirley and husband John Beach of Rayville, Louisiana; a son Walter Jr. and wife Vera of Marcus; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Amy Thrall of San Fransisco, and Millie Manning of Wichita, KS. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, a son-in-law, Chester Speer; two brothers, Martin and Harry Paulsen; and two sisters, Alice McDermott and Anna Petersen.[dec 2000]

DORIS E. O'CONNELL 78, of Oto passed away on November 29, 2000, following a lengthy illness. Services were held December 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oto with burial in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, rural Oto. Doris was born icon 11-30-1921 to Clyde and Ruth (Green)McElrath at Moville, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Vincent O'Connell on April 17, 1941 in Oto. Doris is survived by her husband; one daughter, Marcia & Ray Brown of Sioux City;and two sons; Dennis & Linda O'Connell of Ontario, CA; and Bill & Nancy O'Connell of Anthon; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother Jack McElrath; a sister Janice & Ralph Long; and a sister-in-law Bonnie McElrath. Her parents and a brother Neil preceded her in death.[dec. 2000]

CHARLES F. OERTEL 94, of Anthon passed away at a Sioux City Hospital on Tuesday, November 21, 2000. Services were Saturday, November 25. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Anthon. "Charlie" was born icon December 9, 1905 in Anthon to John F. And Agnes (Cornils) Oertel. On December 24, 1929 he married icon Velma Hayworth. Besides being a mechanic, he was a custodian with the Anthon Public Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of the Anthon Church of Christ and International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge. Survivors include his wife Velma, one daughter Janet Kelsheimer of Anthon, two sons and their wives; Tom & Joyce of Boydton, VA and Charles R. & Janice of Loveland, CO; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.[nov. 2000]

DON KRANZ 73, passed away November 6, 2000, at Kingsley Nursing & Rehab Center in Kingsley, Iowa. Services were Friday November 10, with interment at the Kingsley Cemetery. Don was born icon June 15, 1927 in Kingsley to Otto & Marie (Kegler) Kranz. He served with the US Marine Corps until his discharge in 1952. He married icon Marcella French on Sept. 22, 1951. He is survived by his wife "Marcie", two daughters, Deb and Scott Simmer of Brookeville, MD, and Donette and Jim Lyon of Herrick, SD. A son, Gary and wife Keri Kranz of Anthon; and eight grandchildren.

FRANCIS MEYER 64, passed away on October 8, 2000 at his home. Francis was the son of Bernard and Lena Meyer. He graduated from Anthon High School in 1954. He served with the US Army until 1956. He married icon Carolyn McKenna in 1961. Survivors include his wife, sons Bob, and Bill, and daughters Mary & John Deichmann, Lynn & Troy McCormick, and Nancy & Jeff Davis; his Mother Lena, four sisters; Evelyn Ketelsen, Bernadine Norris, Joyce & Ludy DeKok, and Mary Ann & Dave Brubaker; and six grandchildren.

DEREK GROSZKRUEGER 15, of rural Correctionville passed away October 3, 2000. Derek was the son of Greg "Buzz" and Sharon (Finzen) Groszkrueger.
Derek was a sophomore at River Valley High School.

MABEL PIERCE 94, passed away on October 1, 2000. She was the Mother of four sons; Wayne & wife LaQuita, Anthon, Darrell & wife JoAnn, and Larry & wife Betty, all of Correctionville, and Terry & wife Rhonda of Redmond, Oregon. Also surviving are grandchildren, great grand-children, one sister, and many friends. Mabel was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary McNiff Unit #389 for many years.

McKENZIE KRUSEN, Daughter of Gabe Krusen & Karen Yockey of Danbury, was stillborn September 28, 2000. Graveside services were held September 30, at the Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland, Iowa Survivors include her parents, three sisters, Jessica and Megan Polly, and Gabrielle Fundermann, and a brother Jackson Krusen. Paternal Grandparents, Mike and Kim Weber, of Oto, IA and Maternal Grandmother, Diane Yockey of Castana, Iowa, as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins.

DANNY BOOK 31, son of Helen Book and the late Emmett Book of Anthon was killed in a car accident east of Anthon.
Funeral Services held Sept. 7th, 2000 in Anthon.

RICK FORCH 42, formerly of Oto, Iowa, and son of Gerald and Sally Forch of Oto passed away in a Sioux City Hospital.
Funeral services were held August 31, 2000 in Anthon at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
