MATT ROSS
August 20, 1957 - June 7, 2013

Matthew R. “Matt” Ross, 55 of Sioux City, IA died Friday, June 7, 2013 at a local hospital after a courageous battle with A.L.S., Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Funeral services will be 5:00 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013 at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel. Visitation with the family present will be 11:00 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Condolences may be made online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Matt was born icon August 20, 1957 in Sioux City the son of Leonard and
Margaret (Johnson) Ross. He graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1976 where he was active in track and baseball. He received his degree in cyber crime from Western Iowa Technical College and worked for Avertach in North Sioux City, SD until August of last year.
While in high school Matt worked part time at Solomon’s Grocery Store. He then worked with the family business, Mi Hobby, then at PTT, Target, Taco Bell and Sioux City Brick and Tile.

On September 25, 2004 he married icon Sally “Jo” Bochmann in Sioux City.

His hobbies included golfing, bowling, fishing, fantasy football, camping and watching NASCAR racing. He especially enjoyed family get-togethers.

Survivors include his wife, Jo; 7 children, Shawn Ross of Texas, Grant Ross and his wife, Ashley of Kingsley, IA, Greg Landean of Pomeroy, IA, Kyle Ross of Kingsley, IA, Scott Landean of North Sioux City, SD, Stephany Landean of Sioux City and Zach Larsen of Cedar Rapids, IA; 5 grandchildren, Genevieve Ross, Gavin Ross, Delaney Ross, Ryker Ross and Andrew Landean; his father, Leonard Ross of Sioux City; 3 brothers, Tim Ross and his wife, Pam of Sioux City, Pat Ross and his wife, Vonnie of Jefferson, SD and Kelly Ross and his wife, Kim of Sioux City; 3 sisters, Kaye Wigton and her husband, Tim, Marcy Bunkers and her husband, Bob and Candy Ross all of Sioux City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Ross.

Honorary pallbearers will be Adam Ross, Justin Ross, Joseph Barton, Matt McManus, Jeff Wigton, Jyll Ross and Kimberly Carda.

A memorial will be established and they may be directed to the family.

PAULA F. KULAWIK
February 4, 1923 - June 6, 2013

SIOUX CITY | Paula F. Kulawik, 90 of Sioux City, Iowa died Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Holy Spirit Retirement Home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Msgr. Roger Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday with the family present 6-8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Condolences may be made online at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Paula was born icon Feb. 4, 1923 in Omaha, NE, the daughter of Louis and Josephine (Palupa) Riedmann. She graduated from Creighton University School of Nursing where she served in the Army Student Nurse Corps in 1942. On April 27, 1946 she married icon Sigmund J. Kulawik in Omaha, NE.

The couple made their home in Sioux City in 1946 where they raised their six children. Paula worked as a Registered Nurse for over 35 years, retiring from St. Joseph Hospital. She co-owned and operated Brothers Paper Box Co. with her husband from 1947 until 1984. Her husband died on April 14, 1983.

She was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Church and the Ladies Confraternity. After her retirement she was a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center.

Paula was an avid Cubs fan and an avid reader. Her creative interests included gardening, cooking and needlepoint. She enjoyed traveling, listening to opera, and walking with her friend Dorothy.

Survivors include five children, Kathryn and Steven Larson of Sioux City, Constance and Alan Miller of Monument, CO, Karen and David Davies of Bentonville, AK, Mark Kulawik of Berkley, CA and Denise Kulawik of Minneapolis, MN; ten grandchildren, Emily (Matthew) Alm, Jeremy Drucker, Kimberly Larson, Christopher (Brigit) Larson, Matthew Miller, Andrew Miller, Daniel (Monika) Davies, Kristina Cornwell, Marc (Clara) Davies and James Davies; 10 great-grandchildren, Ethan and Anna Alm, Chloe, Colette and Sawyer Larson, Matthew, Andruw, Alexandria and Madyson Davies and Molly Davies; two sisters, Helen Griffin of Silver Springs, Maryland and May Kay Riedman of Lincoln, NE; and nieces and nephews. Paula is also survived by many special caregivers at Holy Spirit whom she loved as family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and daughter, Christine Drucker, and her beloved companions Ginger and Maggie.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Memorials may be made in her name to Blessed Sacrament Church, Holy Spirit Retirement Home or Hospice of Siouxland.

John L. Doellinger
July 19, 1945 - June 10, 2013

John L. Doellinger, 67, of Sioux City, formerly of Davenport and Dubuque, Iowa, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013 at his residence following a lengthy illness in Sioux City. Local funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 1st Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. with family present from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. A second visitation will be held in Davenport, IA on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 5-7 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe- DeVries Funeral Home. Military Graveside Rites by the U.S. Navy Reserves will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Memorial in Davenport, IA. Online condolences may be sent to www.meyerbroschapels.com Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, Sioux City, IA.

John was born icon on July 19, 1945 in Davenport, IA to George and Iva (Bartenhagen) Doellinger. He graduated from Davenport High School. He later graduated from the University of Iowa in 1967. He married icon Ann Buckley in 1967 in Chicago, IL.

After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy serving tours in Viet Nam. He remained in the Naval Reserves retiring in 1991 at the rank on Commander. After retiring from the Navy, he entered the banking industry as a mortgage lender at Citizen’s Federal in Davenport. He later became a Vice President of mortgage lending at a bank in Dubuque. He then took a position as a Vice President of residential lending at 1st Federal in Sioux City in 1997. He served as President of the Iowa Mortgage Banker Association from 2002 to 2003.

He was a member of 1st Lutheran Church in Sioux City serving on numerous church and community boards and committees, including Church Council President in 2005. He enjoyed golf and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his wife Ann Doellinger of Sioux City; daughter Christie (Mark) Yaggy of Chicago, IL; son Rob (Courtney) of Sioux City; mother Iva Doellinger of Davenport, IA; a brother Steve (Linda) of Davenport, IA; and a grandchild on the way.

He was preceded in death by his father George Doellinger.

Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Sioux City or Hospice of Siouxland.

Neal W. Parr
December 27, 1936 - June 6, 2013

Neal W. Parr, 76 of Sioux City, passed away on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at his residence. Abiding by family wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be a private graveside service at the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in South Sioux City, Nebraska on Saturday, June 15, 2013. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel has assisted the family with arrangements.

Neal was born icon on December 27, 1936 in South Sioux City, Nebraska to William and Chloe Parr. He received his education in the South Sioux City Schools, graduating with the Class of 1954. Neal served his country in the United States Navy. He married icon Judy Burns on May 31, 1958 in Elk Point, South Dakota and to this union, four children were born. Neal always lived in the Siouxland area, working at Sioux Tools as a Machinist and continued at Concrete Pipe. He enjoyed hunting, mastering the computer, and keeping in contact with his many friends via the Ham Radio. Neal was an extremely devoted husband, and found his best friend when he found his wife Judy.

Neal is survived by his children Laurie Lukken and her husband John of Omaha, Jeff Parr of Sioux City, Rich Parr and his wife Terry of South Dakota, and Jamie Schubert and her husband Keith of Hinton, Iowa; sister Annette Artz of South Sioux City, Nebraska; and 9 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, wife Judy just last year on June 28, 2012, and one brother.

Bernice J. Ahrendsen
December 20, 1933 - June 7, 2013

Bernice J. Ahrendsen, 79, of Sioux City passed away Friday, June 7, 2013, at a local hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Alan Wicks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be given at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Bernice was born icon Dec. 20, 1933, in Ocheyedan, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Edna (Bremer) Philiph. She graduated from Ocheyedan High School.

Bernice married icon Don Ahrendsen on June 3, 1955, in Sioux City. To this union, three children were born. Don preceded Bernice in death on Oct. 13, 1997, in Sioux City.

Bernice was an avid Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bulls fan, and her greatest love was to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed Saturday morning, bowling with them for many years.

Bernice is survived by her children, Donna and husband, Kenneth VonderLieth of Sioux City, Dan and wife, Jamie Ahrendsen of Hinton, Iowa, and Dianne Buck of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Korey VonderLieth, Kendra and husband, Charles Westfall, Adam and wife, Erin Ahrendsen, Casey and wife, Amanda Ahrendsen, Blake and wife, Rebecca Ahrendsen, Derek Buck and Trevor Buck; six great-grandchildren, Brooke Bomgaars, Jack Ahrendsen, Mia Ahrendsen, Abigail Ahrendsen, Stella VonderLieth and Tyler Westfall; and a brother, Lyle and wife Darlene Philiph of Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don; parents; and four sisters.

Billy gene Bartelt
May 12, 1931 - June 10, 2013

Billy Gene Bartelt, 82, of Carter Lake, Iowa formally of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Monday June 10, 2013 at the Bellevue NE, Medical Center.

Funeral Services will be 12:00 p.m. Friday June 14, 2013 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel in Sioux City, Iowa with visitation one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Graceland Park Cemetery in Sioux City.

Mr. Bartelt is survived by his wife Marilyn two sons: Bill and Steve, two daughters: Christine and Jackie along with two step- children. Several grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Lester E. Perry
October 25, 1917 - June 10, 2013

Lester E. “Bud” Perry, 95 of Sioux City passed away on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Casa de Paz Retirement Home after a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 A.M. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Rev. Craig Collison will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Thursday with the family
present from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and a vigil service at 7:00 P.M. Thursday all at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery.

Bud was born icon Oct. 25, 1917 in Sioux City; he was the son of Alva and Lyda (Knepper) Perry. He grew up in Sioux City and attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and served in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Expert Rifleman Medal. Bud met his future wife, Marian V. Redden at a dance and they were married icon Aug. 30, 1947 in Sioux City.

Bud worked for National Biscuit Company for 35 years. He built his own home and landscaped the yard. Bud enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling and dancing.

Survivors include his wife Marian of Sioux City, a son: Patrick Perry and his wife Patty of Lincoln, NE; 9 grandchildren: Amber, Ryan, Shaun, Kim, Erin, Brian, Shannon, Patrick and Eric; 19 great grandchildren.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, a his son Robert.
