Sally A. Youngquist, 74, of Sumner, died Thursday, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

She was born icon February 14, 1938, in Keokuk, the daughter of Ted and Helen Kile Ginsberg. She married icon Wayne Youngquist on October 8, 1956, in Keokuk.

Sally owned and operated Big G Furniture Store in Keokuk.

Survivors include: her husband, Wayne of Sumner; a son, Wayde (Tracie) of Montrose; two daughters, Layna (Tom) Larson and Kim (Carl) Moore all of Sumner; 5 grandchildren, Dana Youngquist, Derek Youngquist, Nathan Moore, Kara Larson, Ashley Larson; 2 great-grandchildren, Leeanne Moore and Kaylee (Youngquist) Stark; a brother, Ron (Mary) Ginsberg of Keokuk; two sisters, Cindy (Larry) Brackelsberg and Sherry (Jim) Kay all of Keokuk.

Preceded in death by: her parents.

Services: Graveside services will take place at a later date at Scandinavian Cemetery, Montrose.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.

Virginia M. Peters
(October 17, 1928 - April 27, 2012)

Virginia M. Peters, 83, of Waterloo, died Friday at Lakeview Landing of natural causes.

She was born icon October 17, 1928 in Mallard, Iowa, daughter of Robert and Anna Kirtz Kendal. She married icon Clyde Peters on October 12, 1970 in Independence. He died May 15, 1993.

Survived by: two step daughters-in-law, Beverly Peters of Fayetteville, Pa. and Patricia Peters of Weston, Ma.; four grandchildren, Richard and Michael Peters of Maryland and Matthew and Allison Peters of Massachusetts; and three sisters, Pearl Hood of Mallard, Genevieve Reinders of Emmetsburg, and Frances Wills of Minnesota.

Preceded in death by: two stepsons, Richard and David Peters.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with entombment in Mt. Olivet Mausoleum. Public visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Lois Ellen Dailey
(June 10, 1927 - April 29, 2012)

Lois Ellen Dailey, 84, of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 29 at her home after a brief illness.

She was born icon June 10, 1927 in Lamoni, daughter of James and Stella Pyle Cantrell. She married icon Harvey W. Dailey on November 21, 1947 in Cedar Falls. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1945, she attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). She was employed in the offices of John Deere for 10 years, prior to becoming a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Donna Dailey (Michael) Gerrard of Cambridgeshire, England and Linda Dailey Brintnall of Marshalltown; a son, Thomas (Cindy) Dailey of Goshen, Ind.; three grandchildren, Sam, David and Olivia Brintnall; three step-grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Paul Johnson; two sisters, Alice (Lee) Simmons of Goodman, Mo. and Beverly (Don) Bunce of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Cantrell and three sisters, Isabell Snow, Lyla Richardson and Patricia Cantrell.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4:00 7:00.p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary. There will be no visitation at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to St. Edward Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Tony Dullard
(July 14, 1950 - April 30, 2012)

Tony Dullard, 61, of Gilbertville, died Monday, April 30, in the emergency room of Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

He was born icon July 14, 1950 in Waterloo, son of Raymond and Mildred Collard Dullard. He married icon Linda Harn on December 30, 1970 in Evansdale.

Tony was employed with G. E. Railcar Services for many years, retiring in 2005.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Jeff Dullard of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Sarah Dullard (Jesse Thoeming) of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Richard (Linda) Dullard of Thornton, Colorado and Steve (Janet) Dullard of Chicago Heights, Illinois; three sisters, Mary (Steve) Michels of Independence, Kathy (Jesse) Widdell and Deb Dettmer, both of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: his parents; and two brothers, Michael and Tim Dullard.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, Waterloo. Public visitation will be from noon to service time on Thursday.

Louis Beecher
(September 17, 1921 - April 30, 2012)

U.S. Veteran
W. Louis Beecher, 90, of Waterloo died Monday, April 30 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

Born on September 17th, 1921 in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, Louis was the son of John and Luella Beecher. Upon graduation from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma, Iowa, Louis enrolled at Loras College at the age of 16. He continued his education at The University of Iowa receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1942. Louis married icon Gertrude Murray on November 17th, 1943, at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton, Iowa. She preceded him in death January 27th, 2007.

Louis served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from May 1942, through June 1946. He was a flight instructor at Perrin Field, Texas before being assigned as a pilot and Captain in the Troop Carrier Command with service in Africa, Egypt, Iran, India, Burma, China, Manchuria and French Indochina. Louis received the Air Medal for meritorious flight on December 8th, 1945 over North China Sea. He remained in the U. S. Air Corps Reserve until 1959, retiring with the rank of Captain.

At the end of WWII, Louis reentered the Iowa College of Law, and received his Juris Doctorate degree with Distinction in 1947. He entered the practice of law with his late uncle, W.L. Beecher, and had practiced law continuously in Waterloo since June 1947. He was Senior Partner in the Beecher Law Firm.

Mr. Beecher was deeply committed to the growth and vitality of the Cedar Valley and enjoyed many years of involvement in civic and business expansion projects. Louis provided legal counsel for several hallmark Waterloo business projects including the establishment of Black Hawk Broadcasting Company and local NBC TV affiliate KWWL; the R. J. McElroy Trust, the expansion of the John Deere Waterloo Operations at East Donald St., KBBG Radio, Waterloo Municipal Airport and numerous other local and regional business, civic and recreational initiatives.

Louis served as Chairman of the Board: National Bank of Waterloo, St. Francis Hospital, Trustee Iowa College Foundation, Wartburg College and Director of A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing Company. He was also past president of the Waterloo Industrial Development Association and the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce.

Louis was humbled to receive many honors during his lifetime including the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Award, Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber Legacy Award, The Courier Eight over Eighty Award, and the Honorary Doctorate of Letters and Humanities from Allen Hospital School of Nursing. He and Gertrude were also inducted to the Columbus High School Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Black Hawk County Bar Association, Iowa State Bar Association, The Waterloo Elks Club, and St. Edward Catholic Church.

Louis Beecher was a deeply patriotic man, with great respect and admiration for the country and communities he served throughout his life. Louis was also a warm and gracious gentleman, enjoying time spent with his family and many dear friends, business and legal associates. Louis had a life long love of flying and aviation and humbly shared his many enriching stories of life as a young United States Air Corp Captain flying transport aircraft in World War II. Those closest to Louis will also remember his fondness for restoring antique cars and the pleasure of a good cigar.

Although Louis will be remembered for his incomparable contributions to the betterment of Waterloo and the Cedar Valley over the past 50 years, he will also be fondly missed by his many clients, associates and friends with whom he felt fortunate to have shared his long and blessed life.

Louis is survived by three sons; J. Michael Beecher (Donna) of West Des Moines, William L. Beecher (Desa) of Tacoma, WA., Thomas G. Beecher of Chandler, AZ.; two daughters, Elizabeth Beecher Petersen (Robert), and Mary Beecher Petersen (Eric) both of Waterloo.

He is also survived by his grandchildren: Robert and Katherine Petersen, Cal and Annie Petersen, all of Waterloo; Meghan Beecher of Scottsdale, AZ, Jennifer and Benjamin Beecher of Tacoma, WA, Todd Ensz of Phoenix, AZ, Melanie Kimball of Centerville, SD; one great grandchild, Emma Murray Kimball; his sisters Ronnie Riley and LuAnn Hutchins, both of Charles City, Iowa, Mary Jane Richmond of Paynesville, MN, and brother Bernard Beecher of Waterloo.

Louis was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude, parents John and Luella Beecher, and brothers Gerald and Edward.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012 at St. Edward Catholic Church, 1423 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, Iowa, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvet Post 19, Evansdale Amvet Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Visitation; Friday, May 4, from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church, with a 7:00 p.m. vigil. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.

Newana Jane Kapler
(April 7, 1944 - May 1, 2012)

Newana Jane Kapler, 68, died Tuesday, May 1 at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born icon April 7, 1944 in Cresco, daughter of Arnold E. and Ruth Newana Armstrong Kapler. Newana graduated from Columbus High School in 1962. She retired from UNI, where she had been an administrative secretary for more than twenty years.

She is survived by five brothers, Daniel (Nancy) Kapler of St. Charles, Mo, David (Margaret) Kapler of Lincoln, Neb., Steven (Carolyn) Kapler , Jeffrey (Lisa) Kapler both of Waterloo, Phillip (Cheryl) Kapler of Lakeville, Minn.; six sisters, Julene Contreras of Cedar Falls, Loma Thomas, Linda (Patrick) Connell, Elaine (Steve) Shelton, Sheila Kapler and Renee (Todd) Thompson all of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Jim Thomas.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil followed by a rosary. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Edward "Burl" Armstrong
(October 12, 1932 - May 3, 2012)

Edward “Burl” Armstrong, 79, died Thursday, May 3, at home.

He was born icon October 12, 1932 in Chester, Iowa, son of Roy and Alyce Callahan Armstrong. He married icon LaVonne Roethler on November 12, 1955 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma.

The family moved from Chester, Iowa, to Riceville where Burl graduated from Riceville High School in 1952. He worked in the canning dept. at Rath Meat Packing Plant for 18 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Roland ( Linda) Armstrong and Rodney Armstrong all of Waterloo; four daughters, Rhonda Nichols and Rebecca (Leonard) Caughron all of Waterloo, Rosanne (Jeff) Paine of LaPorte City and Regina (Tom) Belmer of Denver; twelve grandchildren, Trisha Gautney, Travis and Trevor Nichols, Brandon Paine, Justin, Jennifer and Joel Caughron, Jessica and John Armstrong, Amber Barnett, Ashlin Hayungs and Kaitlin Armstrong; six great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mavis Armstrong of Waterloo and a brother-in-law, Robert Fickess of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Eugene Armstrong; two sisters, Helen Fickess and an infant sister, Mary Armstrong.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raymond with burial in Poyner Township Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Greg W. Kollmann
(October 17, 1988 - May 4, 2012)

Greg W. Kollmann, 23, of Traer, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, May 4, as the result of an automobile accident.

He was born icon October 17, 1988 in Waterloo, son of Randy, Sr. and Denise Schreiber Kollmann.

Greg graduated from Waterloo East High School in 2007. He had been employed with Standard Industrial Tooling since 2007. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include: his father and step-mother, Randy, Sr. and Vicky Kollmann of Elk Run Heights; his mother and step-father, Denise and Kent George of Waterloo; his paternal grandmother, Wanda Kollmann of Waterloo; his girlfriend, Ashley Flege of Traer; a brother, Randy, Jr. (Nicole Saul) Kollmann of Waterloo; a nephew, Randy Kollmann, III of Waterloo; three step-sisters, Jessica George, Megan (George) Landkamer and Nicole George, all of Columbus, Nebraska; three step-nieces; and a step-nephew.

Preceded in death by: his paternal grandfather; and his maternal grandparents.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Queen Of Peace Catholic Church. Public visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kay (Buss) Straw
(February 1, 1953 - May 2, 2012)

Waterloo – Kay (Buss) Straw, 59, of Waterloo died Wednesday, May 2, of a homicide.

She was born icon February 1, 1953, in Guthrie Center, Iowa, daughter of Richard and Charlotte White Kness. She was a common law spouse to Terry Allen Buss who preceded her in death. He died December 11, 2002.

She was a clerk with St. Vincent De Paul.

Survived by: a son, Randy (Robin) Barnes Jr. of Carlisle, Iowa; two daughters, Tammy Barnes of Waterloo, and Marlene (Undray Reed) Buss of Waterloo; a step-son, Terrill Buss of Aplington, Iowa; three step-daughters, Janette Buss of Aplington, Iowa, Diane (Doug) Elder of Waterloo and Cheryl Buss of Parkersburg, Iowa; a foster mother, Pat Palmer of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Dylan Barnes, Patrick Weinder, Sierra Barton, Justin Barnes, Dayton Buss, Deondre Reed and Tayshawn Reed; six step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren; five brothers; five sisters; a foster brother, Kevin (Kathi) Caroll of Waterloo; and a foster sister, Linda Johnston of Hudson, Iowa. Preceded in death by: parents; a step-son-in-law, Brian Elder; one brother; two sisters and a foster father, Ivan Palmer.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday May 9, 2012, at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home on South Street with internment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo, Iowa. Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Home on South Street. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the funeral home on Wednesday.

Memorials may be conducted to the family.

Beverly Jean Mathews
(January 30, 1928 - May 6, 2012)

Beverly J. Mathews, 84, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 6, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

She was born icon January 30, 1928 in Fayette County, daughter of Wilbur and Viona Reed Wilson. She married icon Paul Bartz on May 19, 1944 in Westgate. He preceded her in death. She married icon Paul Mathews on April 21, 1984 in Elk Run Heights. He preceded her in death.

Beverly was a home health care worker, a waitress and bartender and was employed with the Black Hawk County Health Department, retiring in 1985. She enjoyed her family, dancing, gardening and sewing.

Survivors include: a son, Russell (Dreama) Bartz of Washburn; six daughters, Carol (Martin) Clever of Westminster, Colorado, Alice (Gary Sauser) Erickson of Elk Run Heights, Linda (Jerry) Niebergall of Evansdale, Luann (Bob) Carlson of LaPorte City, Denise Neal of Loveland, Colorado and Diann Metsale of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; numerous step grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a brother, John (Kathy) Wilson of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Preceded in death by: a granddaughter, Tresa Hawbaker; a great granddaughter, Izzabella Tambornino; a step great grandson, Joshua Mapp; and a sister, Joanne Monroy.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Countryside Vineyard Church, Evansdale, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and at the church for an hour before services on Thursday.
