Dorothy A. Nabholz
(September 21, 1919 - May 7, 2012)

Dorothy A. Nabholz, 92, of Waterloo, died Monday May 7, at Ravenwood Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born icon September 21, 1919, in Lavern Rock, Minn; the daughter of Frank and Adalia Jones Petersen. She married icon Joe Nabholz on February 1, 1946, in Hiawatha, Kan. He died March 6, 1981.

Dorothy was employed as a waitress and various restaurants for many years.

Survivors include: two sons; Tim (Donna) of Waterloo and Jerri of Johnston; 2 daughters, Jolene (Peter) Benson of Wasilla, Alaska and Kim Leff of Fairbanks, Alaska; 10 grandchildren; a sister, Hilda Ihlan of Lavern, Minn.

Preceded in death by: a son, Gerald Martin in infancy; a daughter, Tamara Joy in infancy; 12 brothers and sisters including her twin brother Donald.

Family Directed Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.

Memorials: may be directed to the family.

Wayne F. Swacker
(December 18, 1937 - May 6, 2012)

Wayne F. Swacker, 74, died Sunday, May 6 at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born icon December 18, 1937 in Charles City, son of Walter C. and Lilas M. McGrane Swacker. He married icon Betty J. Silhanek on June 23, 1962 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tama.

Wayne graduated from Charles City High School. He was a tool maker at Waterloo Industries for thirty-eight years, retiring in 2000. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Waterloo; two sons, Todd (Chris) Swacker of Waterloo and Jeff (Terri) Swacker of Sedalia, MO; a daughter, Penny Wright of Dysart; five granddaughters, Sarah Dhein, Tessa Swacker, Shelbi Swacker, Megan Swacker and Emily Swacker; two sisters, Sharon (Lou) Streich of Charles City and Shirley Haugen of Bettendorf.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Taylor Swacker and a grandson, Travis Swacker.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorial may be made to the family.

Thomas A. Gonzales
(January 17, 1948 - May 6, 2012)

Thomas Anthony Gonzales, age 64, of Ypsilanti Michigan, formerly of Waterloo, passed away suddenly on Sunday May 6th, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Pamela (Wood) Gonzales and beloved children Thomas J. (Kari) Gonzales and Christina Felice Gonzales, and grandchildren Ethan and Marissa. He will be greatly missed by them as well as his mother Joy Powers, sisters Mary Lou (Larry) Dralle, Linda (LeRoy) Bean, brother Andre Powers and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father Herman A. Gonzales.

Tom was a man of great wisdom, strength and kindness. Throughout his life, in his words and his deeds, he provided an example to those around him. An example of what it means to be a husband, son, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force for seven years including a tour in Thailand.

Tom graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo Iowa in 1966. He received a B.A., cum laude, from the University of Northern Iowa in 1976 and a M.A. from the University of Michigan in 1977. He later went on to work at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He retired in 2005 after 20 years. He was a man of many interests including riding his Triumph motorcycle, playing guitar, studying genealogy, and supporting Michigan athletics. But his true passion was for his family. He was the pillar of strength, the kind heart, the tireless advocate that has held this family together. With his thoughts carefully chosen and his words softly spoken, he gave us direction and support. His presence will always be missed, but through his love and example, he made us strong.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the South Holland School District 151 Library Fund, 525 East 162nd Street, South Holland, Illinois 60473, or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (https://www.pdf.org/).

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Queen Of Peace Catholic Church with inurnment in Garden Of Memories Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo Amvets Post 19, Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Shirley J. Hall
(September 6, 1938 - May 6, 2012)

Shirley Jean Hall, 73, of Evansdale, died Sunday at Allen Hospital.

She was born icon September 24, 1938 in LaCrosse, Wisc., daughter of Mary O’Brien Lindberg. She married icon George W. Hall on March 26, 1955 in La Crosse, Wisc. He died February 9, 2006.

She was a homemaker.

Survived by: two sons, Jeff (Melanie) Hall of Waterloo and Bruce Hall of Evansdale; two daughters, Debbie (Jeff ) Deutsch of Evansdale and Georgia (Mike) Bullerman of Bourbonnais, Ill.; 8 grandchildren, Chad (Amy), Chrissy (Bill), Josh, Matt (Jessica), David, Heather, BriAnna, and Dakota; 5 great-grandchildren, Amber, Brennen, Kynslie, Addison and Morgan; and her dog Hunter.

Preceded in death by: a son, Robert Francis Hall in infancy; one brother, Virgil Lindberg.

Shirley’s family would like to thank her sister by choice, Mary Duetsch. They would like to express a special thank-you to Dr. Kettman, to the staff at Allen Hospital including the respiratory dept. (Travis), for Shirley’s care. They also would like to thank Dr. Taylor for caring for her pets.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with inurnment at a later date in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street where there will be a 4 p.m. by the Legion of Mary rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Eugene Stephens
(December 8, 1921 - May 11, 2012)

U.S. Veteran
Eugene Robert Stephens, 90, of Waterloo, died Friday at home.

He was born icon December 8, 1921, in West Gate, the son of George and Nellie Fox Stephens. He married icon Norma Aguas on October 30, 1942, in San Fransico, Cal. She died in 2009.

Eugene was employed at Illinois Central Railroad as an engineer, retiring in 1981. He served in the United States Army during World II in the Army Air Corp. He also served in the Iowa National Guard and was a member of Rolling Thunder Iowa Chapter 1.

Survivors include; a son Gary of Waterloo; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a son, Ted Stephens; a brother, Roger Stephens; two sisters, Fern Jenkins and Frances Babcock.

Memorial Services will take place at a later date.

Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is assisting the family.

Memorials: may be directed to the Iowa Honor Flight.

Donald Buls III
(October 11, 1989 - May 12, 2012)

Donald Buls III, 22, of Evansdale, died Saturday at home of cancer.

He was born icon October 11, 1989, in Waterloo, the son of Donald Jr. and Diane Rucker Buls.

Donald was a 2007 graduate of Waterloo East High School.

Survivors include: his parents of Evansdale.

Preceded in death by: paternal grandparents, Donald Sr. and Joann Buls; maternal grandparents, Darwin and Dorothy Rucker; cousin, Alex Anderson.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Visitation also one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to the family at 712 2nd Ave. Evansdale.

Donald loved fishing, swimming, and bowling at the Special Olympics

Henrietta "Hank" Shipp
(January 28, 1917 - May 14, 2012)

Henrietta V. “Hank” Shipp, 95, of Elk Run Heights, died Monday, May 14, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born icon January 28, 1917 in rural Grundy County, daughter of Henry and Tina Schulte Johnson. She married icon Menno F. Van Hauen December 3, 1935 and they were later divorced. She married icon C.W. Shipp March 16, 1962 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He died January 2, 1975.

She owned and operated the C&H; Café in Evansdale for 37 years. She was a lifetime member of the Amvets Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons, Lawrence (Sandy) Van Hauen of Webster City and Ronald (Laurie) Van Hauen of Milaca, Minn.; two daughters, Sylvia (Bob) Walker and Denise Van Hauen of Elk Run Heights; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandsons and a special friend, Janet Taylor of Evansdale.

Preceded by a daughter in infancy, Carol Jean Van Hauen; two brothers and four sisters.

Henrietta and C.W. opened the C&H; Café in Evansdale March 1, 1970. Henrietta kept the business open for 37 years, retiring January 1, 2008. Over the years, she was known as Grandma Hank and was a strong supporter to the Evansdale Police and Fire Departments, the Evansdale Amvets Post 31 and the MDA.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and for an hour before services on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Cleon E. Risse
(November 30, 1924 - May 15, 2012)

Cleon E. Risse, 87, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 15, at home.

She was born icon November 30, 1924 in Hazlelon, daughter of William and Stella Skeen Merrill Wolfe. She married icon Leon P. Risse on September 5, 1955 in Waterloo. He died December 19, 1989.

Cleon graduated from Independence High School. She was employed in the office of Rath Packing Company for 14 years.

Survivors include: a son, Timothy L. (Lesia) Risse of Huffman, Texas; a daughter, Lynette L. Risse of Waterloo; two granddaughters, Leah Risse of Dallas, Texas and Victoria (Michael) Bryant of Huffman, Texas; two great grandchildren, Emma Sue and Carson; three nieces; and very dear friends.

Preceded in death by: her parents; three sisters, Fern Petersen, Norma Wolfe and Wilma Wolfe; and two half brothers, George and Clarence Merrill.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to St. Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army, Northeast Iowa Food Bank or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Dorothy L. Huffman
(December 18, 1921 - May 16, 2012)

Dorothy L. Huffman, 90, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 16 at Lakeview Landing.

She was born icon December 18, 1921 in Waterloo, daughter of Herbert and Anna Olson Draper. She married icon Kenneth L. Huffman on March 16, 1943 at Walnut Street Baptist Church, Waterloo. He died September 20, 2009.

Dorothy graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1941. She was employed with an independent contractor, delivering mail from the Waterloo post office to the airport and then with JC Penney in the drapery department for 17 years, retiring in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Ron (Peggy) Huffman of Marshalltown and Bob (Linda) Huffman of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Nancy Huffman of Waterloo; an adopted daughter, Deb (Mike) Overmann of Cedar Falls and a granddaughter, Amanda Huffman.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to Lakeview Landing.

Dorothy loved to travel and took many trips with friends and family to Hawaii. She really loved her friends and family and always had a smile for everyone. She also enjoyed feeding the birds, her favorite being the hummingbirds.
