Michael "Mike" Jacob Schmitz
(April 21, 1925 - May 15, 2012)

Michael J. “Mike” Schmitz, 87, died Tuesday May 15 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home of cancer.

He was born icon April 21, 1925 in Black Hawk County, son of Michael and Anna Kettman Schmitz. He married icon Helen Mae Drahos on July 1, 1947 in Eagle Center. She died June 16, 1999.

Mike farmed his entire life in the Gilbertville area and also was a salesman for Vigortone Feed for twenty-six years.

He is survived by two sons, Craig Schmitz of LaPorte City and Kent (Sue) Schmitz of Jesup; five daughters, Linda (Ron) Thome of Raymond, Carol (Roger) Schuler of Peoria, Ariz., Vicki (Tom) Schmitz of Roland, Sherry (Danny) Schmitz of Waterloo and Rhonda (Bill) Bloes of Jesup; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; a brother, Bernard Schmitz of Gilbertville; two sisters, Marcella Schmitz and Edna (Claude) LaFlamme all of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Hattie Schmitz of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Brandon Schmitz; two brothers, Roman and Harold; two sisters, Gertrude Schares and Mildred Frost.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, both in Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, where there will be a Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a time of sharing. Visitation also one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Memorials may be made to the Bosco System or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Joyce Elaine Clow
(February 6, 1952 - May 16, 2012)

Joyce E. Clow, 60, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, May 16 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

She was born icon February 6, 1952 in Waterloo, daughter of James Willis and Irene Evelyn Huffman Clow.

Survived by: her special sister, Phyllis Schoenhut of Waterloo; two brothers, Gerald (Sandy) Clow of Waterloo and Michael (Janice) Clow of Denver, Colo. and a sister-in-law, Sue Clow of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: her parents; two brothers, Robert E. Clow and Darrell R. Clow.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be for one hour before services at the funeral home on Tuesday.

Will Frenchie Campbell
(March 26, 1926 - May 17, 2012)

Will Frenchie Campbell, 86, of Waterloo, died Thursday, May 17, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born icon March 26, 1926, in Marianna, Ark., son of John and Susie Barton Campbell.

He married icon Mulinda Walker Campbell in Marianna, Ark.

He was formerly employed with Waterloo Concrete Company and Illinois Central Railroad Company until his retirement.

Survived by: two sons, Rev. Willie D. (Tammie) Campbell and John L. (Janet) Campbell of Waterloo. five daughters; Rosemary Bradford, Christine, Earline Micou, Shirley (Robert) Bruce, and Linda (Leon), all of Waterloo; 41 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 15 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Velma Ford of Chicago, Illinois.

Preceded in death by: his parents; his wife, Mulinda; two brothers, Russell and Lewis; three sisters, Mary and Catherine Campbell and Thelma Webb; two sons, Frenchie Lee and Jessie James; a daughter, Gertrude McKissick; two grandsons, Artwon Bradford and Justin Campbell, and one great grandson, DeCarlos Henderson.

Services 11:00 a.m. Thursday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Public visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials: May be directed to the family at 1674 Woodmayr Drive, Waterloo where they will be receiving family and friends.

Maria J. Sandoval
(January 9, 1921 - May 18, 2012)

Maria Sandoval, 91, of Waterloo, died Friday May 18 at Friendship Village of lung cancer.

She was born icon January 9, 1921 in Waterloo, daughter of Trinidad Gonzales and Maria Ulloa. She married icon John Sandoval on August 23, 1941 at Sacred Heart Church in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Maria graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1938. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America for 50 years and also of the Latin American Club of Waterloo. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include: her husband, John; a son, Gregory Sandoval of Phoenix, Ariz; two daughters, Irene (Larry) Duis of Las Vegas, Nev., and Margaret (Terry) Woodward of Cedar Falls; two daughter-in-laws, Linda Sandoval of Waterloo and Sandra Sandoval of Windsor, Calif.; a brother, Rick Gonzales of Trenton, Fla.; five sisters, Felipa Sinnwell of Des Moines, Iowa, Beatriz Sullivan of Texas, Juanita Rowell of La Porte City, Iowa, Marguerite Ortiz of Waterloo, and Virginia Hurtado of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: her parents; two sons, Michael Sandoval and Steven Sandoval; and four grandchildren, Chad Sandoval, Aaron Duis, twins Trevor and Tyler Sandoval.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Edwards Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on South Street with a 4:00 p.m. rosary by the Catholic Daughters of America and a 7:00 p.m. vigil and also for an hour before services at the church on Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to Friendship Village or Cedar Valley Hospice.

John Michael Carpenter
(March 4, 1940 - May 18, 2012)

John M. Carpenter, 72, of Waterloo died Friday May 18 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born icon March 4, 1940 in Waverly, son of Marshall E. and Catherine (Wieres) Carpenter. He married icon Nancy L. Turner May 7, 1960 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Waterloo.

John graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1958. He owned and operated Carpenter’s Restaurant in Waterloo for many years. He also worked for Paramount Distribution Company for 15 years.

Survivors include: his wife, Nancy; one son, Michael (Eva) Carpenter of Waterloo; four daughters, Jean Clark (Neil Goodell) of Cedar Falls, Linda (Jason) Gambetty of Oregon, Wis., Mary Steffen and Susan Hathaway (Nathan Milius) of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren with another on the way; one brother, Joseph (Sharon) Carpenter of Waterloo; six sisters, Joyce Kammeyer, Mary Carpenter and Ann (Don) Hein of Waterloo, Carol (Tim) Sullivan of West Des Moines, Janice (Ed) Starkey of Iron River, Mich. and Kathy (Dan) Gable of Iowa City.

Preceded in death by: his parents and two sisters, Patricia Anderson and Mary Joann Carpenter.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Edwards Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Waverly. Public visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and also for an hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Grace Mae Regenold
(September 16, 1931 - May 21, 2012)

Grace Mae Regenold, 80, died Monday at NewAdalya Lifescapes.

She was born icon September 16, 1931, in Waverly, the daughter of Frank J. and Mabel Grapp Sebilsky. She married icon Wilbur Regenold on November 9, 1957, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Waterloo. He died March 13, 1993.

Grace was employed as pie baker for Bernice’s Bakery for 10 years until it’s closing in 1964. She worked at Johnson Bakery and then as in home babysitter for 20 years. She was a member of the Eagles Lodge and the Amvets Auxillary, and Lighthouse Fellowship Church.

Survivors include: four sons, Kevin (Kelly) of Urbandale, Duane (Sharon) of Cedar Falls, Darrell (Marshelle) of Fort Worth, TX, and Troy (Leigh-Anne) of Keller, TX; 5 grandchildren and a great-grandchild; a brother, Keith (Marlyn) Sebilsky of Waverly; three sisters, Dorothy (Wilbur) Anderson of Finchford, Frances (Joe) Montgomery of Mountain Home, Ark, and Mary Brecht of Waverly; a sister-in-law, Sharon Sebilsky of Waverly; many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by: a brother, Leon Sebilsky; a brother-in-law, Eugene Brecht.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at NewAdalya Lifescapes Chapel with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street. Visitation also one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

James Wilfred Keefe
(April 30, 1941 - May 22, 2012)

James Wilfred Keefe, 71 of Waterloo died Tuesday, May 22 at his home in the loving arms of his wife Judy of complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born icon April 30, 1941 in Elma, son of Wilfred and Theresa Madden Keefe. The family moved to Waterloo and Jim attended St. John’s Catholic Grade School. He graduated from OLVA High school in the school’s last graduating class in 1959. Jim went to California to seek his fortune but returned to Waterloo to marry Paula Mathews in December 1959. They were later divorced. They were blessed to have three beautiful children, Julie, Daniel and Ryan.

Jim worked for Rath Packing for several years but during a layoff decided to go to Cosmetology School. He graduated in 1962. He owned and operated Jim’s Coiffures on Bertch Street for many years. Jim began work at John Deere in 1972 and retired from there in 2001.

Jim attended University of Northern Iowa majoring in psychology while working at John Deere.

Jim married icon Judy Moore July 2, 2005 at Beaver Hill Country Club. They enjoyed traveling all over the world.

Survived by his Beloved Wife, Judy; Children, Julie Keefe-Klicker (John) of Portland, Ore., Daniel Keefe of Waterloo and Ryan (Alyssa) Keefe of Boston, Mass.; Step Children, Heidi (Brad) Worrall of Charles City, Barbarella Jackson of Waterloo and Johna (Bruce) Petersen of Cedar Falls; Grandchildren, Sophia and Lucinda Klicker, Makala and Madison Keefe, Jessica and Brittany Laychek, Meredith and Isabelle Worrall, Amanda Moore, DeVonta Jackson and Kiefer Petersen; Sisters, Dorothy Moore, Rita (Verelyn) Mayer and Shirley (James) McGarvey all of Waterloo and many Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Great Nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents; Sisters, Marie, Colleen and Georgia and Brothers, Joseph and Robert Francis.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7:00 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Jim loved his family and enjoyed traveling, gardening, golf and bicycle riding (riding in many Ragbrai events).

Peggy J. Hancock
(June 15, 1955 - June 2, 2012)

Peggy J. Hancock, 56, of Waterloo, died Saturday, June 2, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born icon June 15, 1955 in Cedar Falls, daughter of Paul and Patricia Baldwin Fagerlind. She married icon Jeffrey Keller on April 19, 1977 in Waterloo. They were later divorced. She married icon Harold Hancock on July 8, 2011 in Waterloo.

Peggy was a day-care provider in her home for over 32 years and was employed at Blessed Sacrament School until illness forced her to retire.

Survivors include: her husband, Harold Hancock; a son, Adam (Tisha) Keller of Waterloo; a daughter, Sarah (Wesley) Bagby of Cedar Falls; a step-son, Mark (Beth) Hancock of Bettendorf; a step daughter, Michele (Kody) Kramer of Aplington; ten grandchildren, Alex Bagby, Brandon Bagby, Cameron Bagby, Alyssa Bagby, Hannah Bagby, Mason Keller, Benjamin Keller, Alivia Scarbrough, Declan Hancock and Kaci Mae Kramer; a brother, Tom (Melissa) Fagerlind of Webster City; two sisters, Sue (Jerry) Meyer of Waterloo and Paula Roller of Monticello, Indiana; three brothers-in-law, Jerry Rickert of Waterloo and James (Sharon) Hancock and Donald (Susan) Hancock, both of Davenport; two sisters-in-law, Janice (Lorne) Mayer and Mary Hancock, both of Davenport; her ex-father-in-law, Ben Keller of Waterloo; a ex-brother-in-law, Steve (Lisa) Keller of Waterloo; and a ex-sister-in-law, Debbie (Bob) Siglin of Arlington, Texas.

Preceded in death by: her parents; and a sister, Sandra Rickert.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and for an hour before services on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Peggy was the most loving wife, mother and grandmother anyone could ask for. She had a knack for decorating, especially country style. She would take a house and make it into a loving home. She should have done it for a living because the outcome was always extraordinary.

Peggy loved spending time with her family and friends and always loved going to antique shops, garage sales and flea markets to find that just right item for her home decorating creations. She was loved and treasured by anyone who came in contact with her.

Lucille Jo Brasch
(June 8, 1920 - June 5, 2012)

Lucille “Jo” Brasch, 91, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, June 5th at Lakeview Landing.

She was born icon June 8, 1920 in Mitchell, South Dakota, daughter of Arthur and Ada Mensch. She married icon Paul R. Brasch on August 13, 1944 in the Rose Garden at Iowa State University in Ames. He died June 8, 2008.

Jo graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in home economics in 1943. She used her home economics skills throughout her life. In addition to creating a wonderful home for her family, Jo was a gardener, a seamstress, and an exceptional crafts woman. She enjoyed crafting of any form. Jo was also an avid collector – her signature collection was crèches of which she owned over 700. Jo traveled to many of the sites where the crèches were made to collect them. Jo also was a longtime volunteer at Goodwill Industries of Iowa where she spent her time mending and refreshing donated baby dolls.

Jo’s greatest enjoyment was the time she spent with family and friends. Her two daughters were her close companions throughout their lives.

Survivors include her two sons, Joel of Dunkerton and Judd (Cynthia) of Minneapolis, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Richard Brasch, two daughters, Janeen Seehase and Jennifer Stark, and an infant son, Jim.

Services with be 10:30 a.m., Saturday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway. Visitation will be for an hour before the service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Goodwill Industries of Iowa.
