Edward W. Henkle
(December 12, 1945 - June 7, 2012)

U.S. Veteran
Edward W. Henkle, 66, of Evansdale, died Thursday, June 7, at Allen Memorial Hospital.

He was born icon December 12, 1945 in Waterloo, son of Jake T. and Mary Ruth Hay Henkle. He married icon Barbara Huffman July 29, 1967 in Waterloo.

Edward was employed with John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran of the US Army.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Anthony (Elizabeth) Henkle of Waterloo, Troy Henkle of Austin, Texas and Scott (Tehya) Henkle of Gilbert, Ariz.; a daughter, Ashley (Adam) Coarts of West Des Moines; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Albert (Tomiko) and Charles (Margaret) all of Waterloo and Richard (Connie) of Evansdale and three sisters, Frances VanGorder of Evansdale and Zelda (Paul) Dinnibier and Evelyn Gautney all of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Ivan and a sister, Mary DeVoogd.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward Catholic Church with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Army Honor Guard. Public visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway where there will be a 7:00 p.m. time of sharing. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Monday.

Paul Edward Kirsch
(January 13, 1922 - May 20, 2011)

U.S. Veteran
Paul Edward Kirsch, 89, of Waterloo, died Friday May 20, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born icon January 13, 1922, in Waterloo, the son of Grover M. and Mamie Wagner Kirsch. He married icon Louise Quinn on May 5, 1947, in Waterloo. She died October 23, 2005.

Paul graduated in 1940 from East Sioux City High School. He served in the United States Army, serving in Foggia, Italy until 1945. He was employed in construction in the area for many years.

Survivors include: two sons, Robert (Linda) Kirsch of Cedar Rapids and Andrew Kirsch of Omaha, Neb; four daughters, Margaret (Bill) Buell of Maneo, N.C., Annie Kacher and Katie (Mark) Hildman all of Waterloo, and Mary (Lon) Sinclair of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Al Schneiders of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: his parents, Grover and Mamie Kirsch, his wife, Louise; a daughter, Christine Schneiders; a grandson, Adam Clark; a brother, James Kirsch; a son-in-law, Ron Kacher.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Waterloo Amvets Post 19 and Evansdale Amvets Post 31. Public visitation from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or Queen of Peace Catholic Church

Helen M. O'Brien
(July 2, 1916 - May 23, 2011)

Helen M. O’Brien, 94, of Waterloo, died Monday, May 23, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

She was born icon July 2, 1916 in Dubuque, daughter of Oden and Bessie Oakley Brown. She married icon Cyril J. O’Brien on January 10, 1940 in Dubuque. He died May 30, 1982.

Helen graduated from the Finley School of Nursing in Dubuque in 1938. She was a Registered Nurse working at Finley Hospital and with the Visiting Nurses Association, both in Dubuque. Later she was a volunteer school nurse at Columbus High School for many years.

Survivors include: two sons, Dennis O’Brien of Keshena, Wisconsin and Paul (June) O’Brien of O’Fallon, Illinois; four daughters, Cheryl (Mike) Buelow and Deborah (Bob) Esser, both of Dubuque and Diane (John) Waychoff and Dawn (Tim) Henry, both of Waterloo; 17 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lois O'Brien, Donna O'Brien and Dorothy Brown, all of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, John Gregory of Dubuque.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two grandchildren; a great grandson; a brother, George Brown; a sister, Alta Apel; and a daughter-in-law, Delores O’Brien.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial at 2:30 p.m. in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Dubuque. Public visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue at the church for an hour before services on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Barbara Sue Gaede
(April 2, 1941 - May 23, 2011)

Barbara Sue Gaede, 70, of Evansdale, died Monday, May 23, at home.

She was born icon April 2, 1941 in Crumpler, West Virginia, daughter of Fitzhugh Lee and Sarah Imogene Reed Parks. She married icon Darrell Gaede on February 11, 1963 in Mound, Minn.

Barbara was employed with Waterloo Industries and John Deere, also the Cedar Falls Western Home, Black Hawk County Court House and Country View Care Center.

Survivors include: her husband; three sons, Ed Cobb of Dallas, Texas, Phill (Sally) Cobb of Plano, Texas and Todd (Kathy) Gaede of Waterloo; two daughters, Cindy (Dr. Rick) Taylor of Henderson, Texas and Lori (Pete) Gaede-Neidt of Tama; 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; two sisters, Carleen Galloway and Maxine Alcott, both of Waterloo; and a brother, Dick Neunkirk of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by: her parents; four brothers, Frank, Tom and Phil Parks and Jack Neunkirk; a sister, Geraldine Swain; and her step-father, Carl Neunkirk.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway with burial in Garden Of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before services on Thursday.

Memorials may be directed to Compassus Hospice.

Clarissa Friend

Clarissa Mabel DeVault Friend, 88, of Cedar Falls and former Davis County resident died Oct. 7, 2002 at the Windsor Nursing Home in Cedar Falls.

She was born icon July 1, 1914 in Davis County to Harry and Myrtle Marshall DeVault. She married icon Irvin W. Friend Dec. 21, 1935 in Davis County. He died March 14, 1985.

She was a homemaker and had worked at the ASCS Office in Bloomfield. She had been a resident of Cedar Falls since Feb. 28, 1998.

She was a member of the Ottumwa Art Club, Ottumwa Women's Club, and the Church of the Brethren of Ottumwa, where she was active as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, president of Women's Fellowship, and church clerk. Later she became a member of the Orleans Church of Christ of Moulton, and then joined the Cedar Falls Church of Christ in June 1999. She enjoyed her family, painting, camping, canoeing and jeeping in the back country.

She is survived by a son Kenneth Friend of Cedar Falls; a daughter Phyllis Ward of Bloomfield; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother Lowell Allan DeVault of Torrance, Calif.; a half sister Rosemary Oliver of Queen City, Mo. and a half brother David DeVault of Lakewood, Colo.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold and Karl DeVault and two half, sisters Jacquelyn Milles and Evelyn Gillaspie.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home with Revs. Jerry Weller and Dennis Platt officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Wednesday with the family present fro 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorials have been established to the Orleans Church of Christ in Moulton or the Cedar Falls Church of Christ.

Edward Whirrett

Edward T. Whirrett, 95, Bloomfield, died Oct, 1, 2002, at the Bloomfield Care Cetner.

He was born icon March 9, 1907, in Davis County to Clarence and Estella Matthews Whirrett. He married icon Susie Mae Ensminger on Aug. 29, 1930, in Bloomfield, She died March 20, 2995.

A resident of Davis County his lifetime, he was a farmer. He was a 1925 graduate of Pulaski High School and a member of the Pulaski United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo Jokela of Plymouth, Minn., and Martha Stout of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a brother, Kenneth Whirrett.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield, conducted by the Rev. Mary Horras. Burial will be in the Pulaski Cemetery.

Open visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Wagler Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established to the Pulaski United Methodist Church.

Leona Fern Pence

Leona Fern Pence, 63, Canton, Mo., died Oct. 1, 2002, in the Sycamore Health Care Center in Quincy, Ill.

She was born icon Jan. 16, 1939, in Salisbury, Mo., to Ed and Maude B. Hayney Incenogle. She married icon Frederick Lawrence Hardin in Macon, Mo., on July 8, 1955. They later divorced. She married icon Joe Pence in 1963 in Memphis, Mo. He died Nov. 29, 1994.

She was a homemaker and a dietary aide. She also cared for the elderly in hr home. She attended the Christian Church in Cantril.

Survivors include her children, Peggy Goley of Quincy, Ill., Cindy Engle of Troy, Kenneth Hardin of Canton., Mo., and Robert Hardin of Quincy, Ill.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Icenogle of LaGrange, Mo.; a sister, Vriginia Wilson of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; three brothers, Noah. P., William F. and Henry Icenogle; a sister in infancy.

Visitation will be open at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the family present.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in the Richardsdale Cemetery at Bevier, Mo.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Lorrayne Moore

Lorrayne Moore, 85, of Pulaski died Sept. 28, 2002 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born icon Nov. 17, 1916 in Rose Hill to Dwight and Hazel Garrett Rowland. She married icon James Lewis Moore Aug. 27, 1934 in Lancaster, Mo.

She was a homemaker and had been a resident of the Pulaski area since 1944. She was a member of the Pulaski United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Dorcas Circle, Pulaski Senior Citizens, the Quilting and Canasta Clubs and was a Sunday School teacher for several years.

She is survived by her husband; six sons, Owen of Milton, Jim of Fulton, Ill., Chuck of Washington, Terry and Pat of Pulaski and Jack of Bloomfield; one daughter Jane Blakely of Richland; 22 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and two half-sisters Evelyn Steddom of New Sharon and Marilyn Zolner of Joliet, Ill.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren; a brother Claire Rowland and a sister LaVerna Gasperi.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial will be in the Pulaski Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Memorials have been established to the Pulaski United Methodist Church Youth Group, Pulaski Senior Citizens and the Pulaski Corn Show.

Velma York

Velma I. York, 88, Bloomfield, died Sept. 26, 2002, at the Davis County Hospital.

She was born icon Sept. 6, 1914, to Edgar and Lenna Jarvis French in Davis County. She married icon Willard A. York on Dec. 17, 1930, in Lancaster, Mo. He died Oct. 2, 1983.

A resident of Davis County her lifetime, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church, Rebekah Lodge No. 1 and was a past noble grand.

She is survived by a son, Teddy York of Seffner, Fla., a daughter, Connie Anders of Bloomfield; four grandchildren; and two-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Karen York.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Wagler Funeral Home, conducted by Kramer Smith. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Christian Church.
