Harold Schlotter

Harold L. "Toad" Schlotter, 77, of Bloomfield, died Jan. 23, 2003, at the Davis County Hospital.

He was born icon May 4, 1925, in Davis County to Cecil and Elizabeth Gardner Schlotter.

He served in the United States Marines, participating in Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands and the occupation of Japan during World War II.

He married icon Eloise Harris Fry August 1947, in Melvin, Ill. He later married icon Jean Underkofler Schlegel Dec. 29, 1978, in Bloomfield. She preceded him in death May 25, 2001.

A resident of Davis County his lifetime, he was a custodial engineer for the REC for over 30 years. He was a member of the Bloomfield United Methodist Church, a 53-year member of Reed-Whisler Post No. 78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield, a member of VFW Post No. 4958 and a member of Franklin Loge No. 14 AF and AM in Bloomfield.

He is survived by three sons, Robert Schlotter of Kansas City, Mo., Richard Schlotter of Denver, Colo. and Rodney Schlotter of Bloomfield; a daughter Charlene Graves of Bloomfield; a stepson Cree Schlegel of Ottumwa; a stepdaughter Dona Miller of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; six step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Schlotter of Des Moines and Tom Schlotter of Cedar Rapids; a sister Betty Langford of Troy and stepmother Daisy Schlotter of Milton.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Gingerich officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed-Whisler Post No. 78 of the American Legion was in the IOOF Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Avenue of Flags.

Mary Hunter

Mary J. Hunter, 76, of Milton, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

She was born icon May 31, 1926, in rural Keosauqua to Daniel C. and Lena L. Wiley Cook. She was united in marriage to Harry R. Hunter Nov. 12, 1946, in Kahoka, Mo.

She was a graduate of Area No. 1 College of Nursing in Calmar. She returned to school in 1973, and practiced nursing in hospitals and nursing homes until 1985. She was a member of the Iowa Nurses Association. She was a member of the Milton Christian Church since 1956, and served as a deaconess. She also worked as a clerk in the Milton Post Office, Miller Drug Store in Winterset, Continental Clothing in Oskaloosa and Berkley and Co. in Spirit Lake.

She is survived by her husband; a daughter Carol J. Lilly of Ankeny; a son H. Ross Jr. (Butch) of Prior Lake, Minn.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister Marjorie Bruccini of Lawrence, Kan. and three brothers, Ned and John W. (Bill) both of Milton and Kenneth of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Charles Jr., Robert and Larry and two sisters, Maxine Greenfield and Betty Leydens.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at the Milton Christian Church with the Rev. Justin DeVries officiating. Burial was in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Milton.

A memorial has been established to the Milton Christian Church or to the family.

Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Amelia Davis

Amelia Jane Davis, 84, of rural Bloomfield, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center.

She was born icon Feb. 25, 1918, in Pueblo, Colo., to Robert and Martha Knezivich Milisaljevich. She married icon Francis "Red" Davis Sept. 8, 1951, in Las Vegas, New Mexico. He survives.

She was a homemaker and was affiliated with the Pulaski United Methodist Church.

Also surviving are two sons, Brett of Platte City, Mo. and Bruce of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Marple of Pueblo, Colo., Jenna Schmidt of Pittsburg, Colo. and Sophie Snow of Reno, Nevada and two brothers, Robert and Dan both of Pueblo, Colo.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve and Nick and three sisters, Helen Davis, Betty Jo Milison and Estanie Mandarich.

Her body has been cremated and no services are planned.

Memorials may be made to the Pulaski United Methodist Church.

Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Patricia Robertson

Patricia (Patty) Robertson, 69, rural Bloomfield, died Jan. 20, 2003, at her home.

She was born icon April 2, 1933, in Davis County to Osa D. and Margaret Whisler Scott. She married icon James P. Robertson on Oct. 4, 1952, in Lancaster, Mo. He preceded her in death Nov. 14, 1999.

She was a 1951 graduate of Udell High School. A resident of Davis County her lifetime, she was a homemaker and bookkeeper for R & M Plumbing.

Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Clark of Bloomfield, Linda Davis and Kathy Penrod, both of Ottumwa; two sons, David and Michael Robertson, both of Ottumwa; 27 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dowe and Danny Scott, both of Drakesville, and Lowell Scott of Unionville; four sisters, Marieta Eakins of Drakesville, Marilyn Brookhart and Carolyn Bankson, both of Centerville, and Frata Purdum of Unionville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a sister, Vera Lynn Scott; and two brothers, DeVere and O.J. Scott.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home with Pastor Gary West officiating. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery in Appanoose County.

Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.

A memorial has been established to her family.

Darline Spilman

Darline Marie Spilman, 87, Bloomfield died Jan. 18, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

She was born icon Jan. 7, 1916, in Wapello County, to Raymond Longly and Almira May Warder Green. She married icon Howard Walter Spilman Dec. 24, 1934, in Floris. He preceded her in death Sept. 28, 1990. A resident of Davis County most of her life, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Dunnville Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters Nancy Rae Warren of Phoenix, Ariz. and Marie Monsen of Ajo, Ariz.; two sons Gale Spilman of Richmond, Mo. and David Spilman of Norfolk, Nebr.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Green of Agency and a sister, Ruth Bryan of Ajo, Ariz.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons and two brothers, Darrell and Garth Green.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Pastor Gale Spilman officiating. Burial will be in the Dunnville Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Dunnville Baptist Church.

Cleo Smothers

Cleo B. Smothers, 93, Bloomfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

She was born icon March 18, 1909, in Drakesville to Arch and Ola Belle Sloan Dooley. She married icon Floyd Botts on Dec. 24, 1928. He preceded her in death. She then married icon John D. Smothers, Sept. 10, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale In Nashua. He died Oct. 4, 1982.

She had been a resident of Davis and Wapello Counties all of her life. She and her husband, Dow, owned and operated the Drakesville Grocery Store and the Dairy Drive Inn in Drakesville for several years. She also worked for Koon's Variety Store, IAMO Food Store and White's Grocery. She was a member of the Savannah Christian Church and a life member of the DAV.

She is survived by daughter, Helen Marie McGrew of Ottumwa; two step-daughter, Marilyn Schmidt of Watkins and Judy Munson of California; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Waggoner of Bloomfield.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two step-sons, Wayne and Max Smothers; a step-daughter, Betty Ishmel; a grandson; a brother, Trenton Dooley; and a companion, Arlo Brake.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, 3003, at the Henkenius-Priester Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Wakelin. Burial will be in the Drakesville Cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Bloomfield Care Center.

Betty Coy

Betty Rose Coy, 73, of Columbia, Mo., and former Bloomfield resident, died April 13, 2003 at South Hampton Place in Columbia, Mo.

She was born icon Dec. 29, 1929, in Davis County to Paul and Lala M. McClure Archibald.

She was a homemaker and had been a desk clerk at Southfork Motel in Bloomfield for several years.

She is survived by two sons, Rick Coy of Columbia, Mo., and Monte Coy of Bettendorf; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home with Pastor Nancy Pick officiating. Burial will be in the Floris Cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. The family will be present Thursday from noon until the time of service.

A memorial has been established to the American Cancer Society.

Faye Engle

Lela Faye Engle, 88, Pulaski, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at the Bloomfield Care Center.

She was born icon March 1, 1915, in Drakesville to Irvin and Vina Albright Scott. She married icon Charles T. Engle on June 18, 1938, in Kirksville, Mo. He died July 17, 1998.

A resident of Davis County her lifetime, she was a homemaker and had been a cook at the Davis County Home for several years. She was a member of the Pulaski United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

She is survived by three sons, Larry Engle and Wayne Engle, both of Ottumwa and Steven Engle of Bloomfield six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lowell Scott of Cantril and Donald Scott of Branson, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Harold Scott.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial will be in the Pulaski Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6:30-8 p.m.

A memorial has been established to the Pulaski United Methodist Church.

Hunter Jones

Maston Hunter Jones, 81, of Troy, died April 7, 2003, at the Good Samaritan Center in Keosauqua.

He was born icon May 4, 1921, to Clarence and Grace Robbins Jones in Milton. He married icon Vivian Lois Gravett Feb. 8, 1946, in Pulaski.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. A resident of Davis County his lifetime, he was a self-employed agricultural trucker. He was affiliated with the Troy United Methodist Church and was a former member of the American Legion and VFW.

He is survived by his wife; a son, James A. Jones of West Des Moines; four daughters, Anna Marie Anderson of Adel, Patsy J. Roberts of Oskaloosa, Susan Kay Foy and Cheryl "Cheri" Porter, both of Indianola; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson and a sister, Doris L. Lawson of Monterey.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ralph, Max and Rex Jones and two infant sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wagler Funeral Home with the Rev. Ellis Andrews officiating. Burial with graveside military rites by Reed-Whisler Post No. 78 of the American Legion in Bloomfield will be in the Troy Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials have been established to the Troy Academy and the Troy United Methodist Church.
