Anita Myers

Anita Mary Beine Myers, 78, of Burlington died at 1:58 a.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born April 29, 1927, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Joseph James and Alma Bergthold Beine. On Oct. 6, 1951, she married Norman Earle "Duke" Myers. He died on Oct. 31, 1994.

Mrs. Myers was a homemaker.

She was a member of SS. John and Paul Catholic Church. She also was a member of Burlington Professional Women. She loved flowers, sewing, needlepoint, crossword puzzles and ballroom dancing.

Survivors include five daughters, Christine Smith of Keokuk and Michelle Luksetich, Maureen Behne, Veronica Royer and Laura Myers, all of Burlington; three sons, Joseph Myers of Battle Creek, Mich., John Myers of Perth, Australia, and James Myers of Burlington; 19 grandchildren; nine great–grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia Grothe Maxwell of Johnston, Claire George of Littleton, Colo., and Doris Levins of Burlington; nieces; and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral for Mrs. Myers will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Father Gerald Stouvenel officiating. Graveside ash committal will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery at a later date.

Betty Hining

Betty Jane Hining, 77, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at her winter residence in Clearwater, Fla.

Born Sept. 12, 1925, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Frank and Viola Holland Welcher. On June 9, 1946, she married Arden Hining in Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Hining worked for the Ordnance Plant in Middletown during World War II. She was a homemaker.

She lived most of her life in the Fairfield area.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Debra Hining of Palm Harbor, Fla.; one grandson; two sisters, Erma Hayward of Mount Pleasant and Geneviene Brown of New London; and three brothers, Eugene Welcher of Biggsville, Ill., Bill Welcher of Manchester and Bob Welcher of West Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and four brothers.

Open visitation will be today at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Hining will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keevin Koch officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Eleanor Baird

Eleanor M. Baird, 95, of Mediapolis, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Nov. 19, 1909, in Hopkinton, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew McDonald. On Oct. 30, 1944, she married Paul Baird. He died April 1, 1997.

Mrs. Baird taught school for more than 30 years, retiring from the Mediapolis School District.

She was a graduate of Hopkinton High School and Lenox College in Hopkinton. She was a member of Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church, Retired Teachers Association, Mediapolis Study Club, Women's Missionary Society, Farm Bureau Women, Home Club, Bridge Club and was active in the National Honor Society. She was a part of the Round Robin Club from high school.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 6:30 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Morning Sun, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Baird will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Ron Good officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Church Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Eleanor Baird Scholarship Fund for a future teacher.

Carolee Marshall

Carolee Marshall, 56, of Farmington, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2005, at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua. Arrangements are pending at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.

Alman Myers

Alman Myers, 82, of Carthage, Ill., died of natural causes Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at his home.

Born Dec. 29, 1921, in Webster, Ill., he was the son of Alphus A. and Grace Marshall Myers. He married Helen Holtsclaw, who preceded him in death. He married Ann Eckhardt in 1983 in Hamilton, Ill.

Mr. Myers owned Myers Plumbing and Heating in Hamilton for many years. He retired in 1985.

He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5256 and charter member of Deer Run Golf Course in Hamilton. He was an excellent woodworker and craftsman.

Survivors include his wife of Carthage; two sons, Denny Myers of Port Richey, Fla., and Gary Myers of Hamilton; seven grandchildren; five great–grandchildren; one great–great–granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, one sister and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage.

The graveside service with full military rites for Mr. Myers will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Carmen Cemetery in Carmen, Ill.

Memorials may be directed to Deer Run Golf Course in care of Printy Funeral Home, 603 Walnut St., Carthage, IL 62321.

Barbara Whippie

Barbara Jean Whippie, 41, of Keokuk, died at 11:48 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born Oct. 29, 1963, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of John and Rosalie Hobb Kay. She was married to Alan Hall for 13 years. On June 10, 2004, she married Robert Whippie in Keokuk.

Mrs. Whippie worked at St. Louis Gear.

She was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk area.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Thomas and Cory Hall, both of Keokuk; one daughter, Jaime Hall of Keokuk; one stepson, Brandon Whippie of Keokuk; her parents, John Kay and Rosalie Rakey, both of Keokuk; one brother, David Kay of Keokuk; one grandmother, Rosalie Hobb; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Whippie will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greaves Mortuary, with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Arvid Egert

Arvid Vincent Egert, 89, of Burlington, died at 8:57 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born June 19, 1915, in Pro–phetstown, Ill., he was the son of Joseph and Ioma Richard Egert. On July 2, 1955, he married Betty Jean Abrisz in Moline, Ill. She died Dec. 9, 2000.

Mr. Egert was an assembler for 22 years at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, Ill.

He was of the Protestant faith. He was a World War II Army veteran obtaining the rank of sergeant.

Survivors include one sister–in–law, Jackie Balbort of Burlington; and one brother–in–law, Richard Abrisz of Burlington.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and eight sisters.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel.

The graveside committal service for Mr. Egert will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Rock Island National Cemetery , with the Rev. Tyrone Henderson officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Burlington Public Library.

Dallas Scott

Dallas Scott, 29, of West Burlington and St. Louis, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, in Savannah, Ga.

Born Jan. 7, 1975, in Iowa City, he was the son of Jim and Sheila Scott Flietner. He was previously married to Rebecca Fowler.

Mr. Scott was serving with the Coast Guard, where he obtained the rank of damage control 2nd class.

He was a 1993 graduate of West Burlington High School. He was a 1998 graduate of the Coast Guard recruit basic training in Cape May, N.J., and was stationed at the Coast Guard Station in Oswego, N.Y., in August 1998 and at Alexandria Bay, N.Y., in September 1998. He was a 1999 graduate of the Coast Guard training center at Yorktown, Va., and was a member of the Integrated Support Command in St. Louis. He was currently serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin of Charleston, S.C., since August 2003. He was of the Catholic faith. He enjoyed jet skiing, riding motorcycles, race cars, surfing and parachuting. He also loved to hunt.

Survivors include two daughters, Madison and Morgan Scott of St. Louis; his parents, Sheila and Jim Flietner of Crown Point, Ind., formerly of West Burlington; two brothers, Cody Flietner of Burlington and Dakota Flietner of Crown Point; one sister, Sierra Flietner of Crown Point; maternal grandparents, Leo and Ruby Scott of Sperry; paternal grandmothers Ann Flietner of Phillips, Wis., and Winnie Porter of West Chester; three uncles, three nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather and great–grandparents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Scott will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Coast Guard Honor Guard of Washington, D.C., will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Kingston.

A memorial has been established.

Audrey George

Audrey R. George, 76, of Prairie Ridge Care and Rehabilitation in Mediapolis, formerly of Burlington, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, at the care center.

Born Dec. 27, 1926, in St. Louis, she was the daughter of Teague and Ruth Reynolds McCray. She married William J. George.

Mrs. George as a licensed vocational nurse for 30 years. She worked in nursing homes and as a private duty nurse.

She was of the Catholic faith. She was a volunteer in security at Steamboat Days for more than a decade.

Survivors include one son, James A. Dewitt Sr. of Berwick; two daughters, Mary Catherine Anderson of Arkansas and Ruth Ann Dewitt; seven grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; one brother, David McCray of Davenport; one sister, Shirley Graves of Englewood, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

The body of Mrs. George has been cremated according to her wishes. There will be no service.

A memorial has been established in her memory and may be sent in care of "Grandma," P.O. Box 99, Berwick, Iowa 50032.

Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is in charge of arrangements.
