Robert "Bob" Eugene Castings (1926-2011)

Robert "Bob" Eugene Castings, age 85, of Albia died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia, under the care of Hospice of Monroe County.

Robert was born icon April 25, 1926 in Valley Junction, to Jessie and Mary (Pirnat) Castings.

He married icon Betty Jane Cooper on Nov. 21, 1966 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia.

She preceded him in death on June 12, 1989.

Robert attended and received his GED from Albia Community High School.

He was in the Army Air Corp during World War II from 1945-1947.

He worked for his brother at Amoco in Albia and had a dairy farm before owning and operating Coast to Coast Hardware, which was later named Hardware Hank.

Robert was a member of the American Legion Howard Cessna Post #136 for over 60 years and the VFW in Albia, along with being one of the original founders of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3583 in Albia.

He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, golfing and boating with friends.

Spending time with his family was also very important to Robert.

Robert is survived by his children, Robert A. Castings and Stephanie (Nick) Castings, both of Albia; grandchildren, Cody, Kacie, Madison, Sydney, and Tyler; a sister, Lucille Caughey of Knoxville; a sister-in-law, Marion Castings of Newton; and a special friend, Marjorie Briles. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty; and two brothers, Albert and Everett Castings. Memorial services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Neil Montz officiating.

Inurnment will follow in Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

Visitation began at 11 a.m. and will conclude at 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at the funeral home with Robert's family present from 6-8 p.m.

An open memorial has been established in Robert's name.

Sharon Prater (1955-2011)

Sharon Prater, age 55 of Moravia, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at her home.

She was born icon Nov, 18, 1955 in Hayward, Calif., the daughter of David and Lorraine (Donovan) Dickinson. She was raised in California and graduated from Dublin High School in Dublin, Calif.

Sharon later attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, and graduated with honors with an associate's degree in computer programming.

She married icon Phil Prater on June 29, 1974 in Oakland, Calif., and to this union, three children were born, Jill, Robin, and Jeff. Sharon was employed with Principal Financial Group for several years in the computer programming field. In her free time, Sharon thoroughly enjoyed quilting.

It was a family tradition and her true passion. She was a member of the Albia Crazy Quilters Club.

Sharon also enjoyed sewing and spending time in her garden with the flowers.

She was a member of the Promise City Church of Christ.

Most importantly, Sharon loved spending time with family and church friends.

She is survived by her husband Phil Prater of Moravia; three children, Jill Prater of Moravia, Robin (Shawn) Caley of Unionville, Mo., and Jeff (Alyssa) Prater of Moravia; her mother Lorraine Dickinson of Mystic; and a sister Clarice Bailey of Minneapolis, Minn.

Sharon was preceded in death by her father David Dickinson and brother "Little" David Dickinson.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 22, 2011 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia, with Pastor Andrew Pratt officiating.

A visitation will be held Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia with the family present from 6-9 p.m., that evening.

Burial will follow the service in the Salem Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the Promise City Church of Christ, the Moravia Library, or the Albia Crazy Quilters and may be left at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia.

Perry Jensen

Perry L. Jensen, 43, passed away November 8, 2007. No services are planned at this time. He is survived by his parents, Berndt & Kathlene Jensen; brothers, Paul, James, Michael & Nicholas and sister, Peggy.

Letha Baker

Letha C. Baker, 97 passed away at her home on Thursday, November 8, 2007. Graveside services will be held at 1pm Tuesday at the Ottumwa Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm Sunday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home.

Charles Snyder

Charles W. Snyder, 85, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Taylor House. Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 11-12 p.m. Saturday prior to the funeral.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dorothy; his son, Charlie Snyder and his sister, Phyllis Krusenstjerna.

Gerald Jacobs

Gerald “Jerry” Jacobs, 84, went home to be with the Lord after a long illness early Sunday morning, July 29, 2007 at Iowa Health Taylor House Hospice surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Gerald served in WWII as a Navy Seabee. He was a member of the V.F. W. and Grace Church. He retired from Neumann Bros. Construction in 1988 after 47 years of service. Gerald is survived by his wife of 66 years, Esther; sons, Jerry and Richard, both of Des Moines and Robert of Mitchellville; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Josephine Jacobs; grandsons, Robert “Bobby” of Runnells and Jacob Gracey of Des Moines.

Delbert Sadler

Delbert “Del” J. Sadler, 72, passed away August 3, 2007. As Del’s wishes his body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time.

Del is survived by his wife, Barbara Sadler; Brother, Robert (Ruth) J. Sadler; Sister, Patricia Ann Bacino and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Laurn & Frances Sadler; brother’s in law, Ray Walton and Chan Bacino.

Lillie Salmons

Lillie Maxine Salmons, 84, died Monday, July 30, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m Wednesday with an Eastern Star Service at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillie was born icon April 20, 1923 to Harry and Mary (Johnson) Pittman in Des Moines. She worked as a seamstress for Younkers until her retirement in the mid 80’s. Lillie was a member of Eastern Star Chapter 89, Mount Olivet White Shrine #2, Wesley United Methodist Church and Daughters of the Nile. She volunteered to be the Sunshine Committee, sending thousands of greeting cards over the past 21 Years. She was well known for her beautiful handcrafted items that her family will always cherish.

Lillie is survived by her daughter, Carol (Bill) Freeman; sister, Shirley (Dick) VerMehren; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Salmons; and sons, Donald D. Cox and Thomas Cox Brenden.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Louise Gathercole

Louise Gathercole, 85, died Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 at Sheridan Park United Methodist Church, 4100 Sheridan Ave. with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.

Louise was born icon November 20, 1921 in Des Moines. She graduated from East High in 1940. Louise retired from Allied Insurance. She was a member of Sheridan Park United Methodist Church.

Louise is survived by her sons, Johnny (Paula) Gathercole of Santee, CA, Jerry (Sandy) Gathercole of Des Moines, Pat (Claudia) Gathercole of Granger, Kirk (Terri) Gathercole of Des Moines and Alan Gathercole of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters, Gretchen Penney of Corpus Christi, TX, Opal McNitt of West Des Moines and Norma Fenton of Des Moines; brothers, Lloyd Rees of Des Moines, Arthur Rees of Altoona and Merrill Rees of Ankeny; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John of 50 years in 1992, five siblings and her parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church.

Doris Doornenbal

Doris Louise Doornenbal, 74, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. She was born icon May 17, 1933 to Virginia and Otto Anderson in Des Moines. Doris was a East High School graduate. She worked at Relia Star for many years until her retirement. Doris enjoyed sitting in her backyard with her dog “Lady”. But the love of her life was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed being with her family.

Doris is survived by her sons, Jeff of Des Moines, Mark (Sandra) of Pontiac, Illinois, David (Reenie) of Des Moines and Dan (Cindi) of Ankeny; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, her sisters, Phyllis Nicholson and Joanie Anderson; her brother, Ronald Anderson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arvin.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Wednesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home.

Robert Brown

Robert “Bob” Derrell Brown, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday, August 2, 2007 after a long, courageous battle with emphysema. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2007 at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th St. in Altoona, with burial to follow at the Mitchellville Cemetery.

Bob was born icon April 12, 1930 in Jesup, Iowa, the son of Elza and Mabel (Nesfield) Brown. He retired from the Southeast Polk School District after dedicating over thirty years of teaching and coaching many children. Bob was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict and a charter member of Lutheran Church of the Cross.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Jane; sons, David (Rosemary) Brown of Altoona, James (Debra) Brown of Clive and Paul (Laura) Brown of Altoona; 6 grandchildren, Ayra, Melissa, Joey, Kindra, Christina, and Katie and 6 great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Dakota, Christian, Clarity, Makale, and Hannah. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Brown.

The family will greet friends from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 5, 2007 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran Church of the Cross or Mercy Hospice in Johnston in loving memory of Bob.
