Shirley A. Hertz
Shirley Hertz, 70, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2007, at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House in Des Moines. Shirley was born
February 7, 1937 in Des Moines. She worked at Diamond Animal Health for 20 years.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Hertz; daughter, Lynda Hills of Des Moines; son, John Hertz of Ankeny; four grandchildren; sisters, Cleo Murray of Des Moines, and Phyllis Snell Leavenworth of Kansas; three brothers, Carl Moses of Dubuque, Iowa, Larry Moses of Logandale, Nevada, and Robert of Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is preceded in death by her sister, Marti Hertz of Grimes.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 p.m. Monday, November 12, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2007 at the funeral home.
Josephine Cunningham
Josephine “Jo” Cunningham, 84, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at Kavanagh House on 56th. A memorial services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Glendale Cemetery.
Jo was born
July 1, 1923 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Henry and Josephine Stewart. She resided in the Des Moines area most of her life and worked in the insurance industry and retired from State Auto Insurance.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Cunningham; brother, Bobby Stewart; and her sister, Ione Waterman. She is survived by her dear friends, Cathy and Juanita.
William Wallace
William Wallace, 45, died at his home Wednesday, November 7, 2007. His body has been cremated and no services are planned.
William was born
in St. Joseph, MO and graduated from Northwest Missouri State with a double major in Biology and Physical Education and was a certified Medical Technician He had lived in Des Moines for the past ten years and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his mother, Joan L. Wallace of Des Moines; sisters, Sara (Larry) Wallace-Mick of Des Moines, Susan (Cary) Valentine of St. Joseph, MO; and four nieces.
Cory Sleeth
Cory Sleeth, 28 along with his brother Michael died Friday, November 9, 2007 in Cass County, Minnesota from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Joint funeral services will be 2pm Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Avon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday from 4-7pm at the funeral home.
Cory was born
July 29, 1979 to Monika and Gilbert Sleeth. Cory enjoyed video games, watching movies at home and especially liked hanging out with the guys.
Cory is survived by his companion Misty Payne; his father Gilbert Sleeth; his sister Brigitte Sleeth; his nephews Justin (Abby) Sleeth, Jacob (Mandy) Sleeth; his niece Jayde Sleeth; his great nephew Paul Sleeth and grandmother Olive Sleeth. He was preceded in death by his mother Monika Sleeth; grandfather Lloyd Sleeth and his grandparents from Germany.

Israel Torres
Israel Torres, 83, died November 9, 2007 at the Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House.
He is survived by his wife, Mable: two daughters, Donna (Don) Harrity of Marion, Mary (Jim) Freel of Runnells; 4 grandchildren, Sean and Erin Harrity, Megan and Emma Freel; three sisters, Carmen of Avenel, N.J., Luz of Ponce, Puerto Rico and Concha of Adjuntas, Puerto Rico.
Funeral services will be 12 Noon Wednesday at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW, Altoona. Visitation will be for two hours prior to the service.
Irene Harrington
Irene M. Harrington, 95, passed away peacefully November 9. 2007 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Services will be held 11 am Tuesday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held after 3pm Monday with the family present from 6 to 8pm Monday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Dunreath Cemetery.
Irene was born
November 22, 1911 in Hartford to Frank and Bessie Morris. She worked at numerous jobs before retirement but most recently as a cook for the Des Moines Public Schools. She worked at Woodrow, Willard and Brooks schools. Irene was a more then 50 year member of Grant Park Christian Church and the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting, bowling and camping.
Irene is survived by her children, Juanita Gustin, Donna O’Callaghan, Phyllis Sutton (Jack), and Dwight Harrington (Ruby); 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Lester, her son John, her brother, Elmo Morris and her sister, Beatrice Mikesell.

Gwendolyn Stubbs
Gwendolyn Stubbs, 68, died peacefully at Taylor House on Saturday November 10, 2007. Funeral will be 1:00 Saturday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 Friday evening at the funeral home.
Gwen was born
in Iowa City, IA on April 5th 1939 to Heywood G. Brewer and Mary Lee Jackson, who both preceded her in death. She was a life long East Des Moines resident and graduated with the class of 1956 from East High School. Gwen was a life long member of First C.M.E. Church, serving as secretary for many years. Her former employers were LOOK Magazine, Blue Cross of Iowa and State of Iowa Department of Health.
She is survived by stepfather, George W. Brown; stepmother, Dolores Brewer both of Des Moines; daughters, TaLencia Stubbs, Ames, TaVonne Botts, Des Moines; sisters, Antoinette (William) Harris, Issaquah, WA., Charlene (Fred) Williams, Des Moines, Pam Lewis, Des Moines; brother, David (Linda) Brewer, Des Moines; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Janet Thompson
Janet Thompson, 71, of Des Moines passed away at her home on Saturday, November 10, 2007. The visitation will be held from 6-9 PM Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. There will be a graveside service held at 10 AM Thursday at the Rising Sun Cemetery.
Janet is survived by her children; Wilberta Morris, Jerry Hill, Patrick (Tammy) Thompson, and Billie “Amanda” (Richard) Kemmer. Her eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Janet is preceded in death by her husband; William Thompson and daughter; Pauline LaMotte.

Zelpha Mae Drake, 66, passed away November 10, 2007.

She is survived by her daughters, Claudia & Jack Burk, Nichole Phillips; grandchildren, Pierce Phillips, Scott Burk, Paul Burk, Eric Burk, Holli Boggs; great-grandchildren, Kayne Burk, Dallas Burk, Dalton Burk, Darrianne Burk, Rachael Burk, Laney Burk, Josef Burk, Ashtin Burk, Shelby Burk; and great-great-grandson, Tegen Schutjer.
Michael Kahn
Michael Kahn, infant son of Marvin Kahn and Augusta Francis died November 7, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, November 9, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Glendale Cemetery.
Gertrude Grimes
Gertrude Ann Grimes (her family knew her as "Dick") was born
in Dunlap, MO on April 16, 1911. She was the youngest of six children born
to Dr. and Mrs. Charles Thomas. When she was three years old, the family moved to Laredo, MO. Gertrude came to know the Lord as Savior at an early age when she attended the Baptist Church in Laredo, MO. She married
Codey E. Grimes on December 7, 1935, and they moved to Iowa. He preceded her in death.
Gertrude is survived by two children, Tom of Cumming and Susan Steinick of Des Moines, six grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. Prior to entering Polk City Nursing & Rehab in August, 1999, she was an active participant in Bondurant First Federated Church and loved the Young at Heart group. Gertrude was a homemaker and a loving mother who always put everyone else first. On November 9, 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa, Gertrude went to be with the Lord, she will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.
Daniel Higdon
Urbandale, Iowa - Daniel H. Higdon, 65, died Sunday, November 11, 2007 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. Dan was born
to Glen and Bernetta Higdon on November 3, 1942.
Dan graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa and received his Bachelor’s degree at Drake University and then later went on to Northwest Missouri State University to receive his Master’s degree.
Dan’s career began with 20 years of teaching and coaching boys basketball and boys track. Those were the most special and memorable years of his career. The next 15 years were spent in the business world. Dan sold and was a financial planner with the Principal Financial Group receiving several awards for his hard work. Dan then became a training consultant for the corporate office of Principal. Before retirement, Dan continued to consult privately with a variety of businesses, the most recent work being with displaced employees of the Maytag Corporation in Newton where he used his teaching and coaching skills once again.
Dan is survived by his wife and partner, Marlene; his daughters Lisa (Joe) Strnad of Ankeny and Cindy (Mark) Miller of Osceola, and his grandchildren Riley, Drake and Macie Strnad. Dan is also survived by his sister Donna Meeks of Cedar Rapids, step-daughter Melissa (Steve) Seybert of West Des Moines and step-granddaughters Emma and Luci. Dan also leaves numerous friends, including “The Boys” to honor his memory. Dan was preceded in death by his parents Glen and Bernetta.
To celebrate Dan’s life, there will be a visitation at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway on Wednesday, November 14, 2007 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.; the family will be present from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorial services will be Thursday, at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with interment at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa. The family wish to extend a special thanks to Karol, Heather, Mary, and Jill from Hospice of Central Iowa for their loving care and concern.
Betty Stuart
Betty Stuart, 80, passed away peacefully Monday, November 12, 2007 at Granger Nursing and Rehab. Graveside inurnment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17, 2007 at Oakwood Cemetery in Pleasant Hill.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Wanda Atkins of Des Moines and Sonja Mauk of Grimes; her son, Harry Stuart of Boone; 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, DuWayne Stuart.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in loving memory of Betty. Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway has been entrusted with arrangements.
