Jeanne Reese

Jeanne E. Reese, 54, died on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Kavanagh House on Grand. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Jeanne is survived by her children, Kathryn Marsh, Raymond Deveau, and Darlene Smith; 12 grandchildren; and mother, Francis Martin.

Michael Sleeth

Michael Sleeth, 45, along with his brother Cory died Friday, November 9, 2007 in Cass County, Minnesota from injuries sustained in an auto accident. Joint funeral services will be 2pm Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with burial following at Avon Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, from 4-7pm at the funeral home.

Michael was born icon June 7, 1962 to Monika and Gilbert Sleeth. Michael was a great outdoorsman enjoying fishing, hunting, camping and especially loved spending time with his family.

Michael is survived by his wife of 25 years Teresa; his sons Justin (Abby) Sleeth, Jacob (Mandy) Sleeth; his daughter Jayde Sleeth; his grandson Paul Sleeth; his father Gilbert Sleeth; his sister Brigitte Sleeth; his grandmother Olive Sleeth; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law Larry and Sally Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother Monika Sleeth; grandfather Lloyd Sleeth and his grandparents from Germany.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Michael.

Diane VanSickle

Diane Cheryl Porter VanSickle, 51, died unexpectedly at her home Saturday, November 10, 2007. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home with burial at Oralabor Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Diane was born icon March 18, 1956 to Robert and Maxine Porter in Ankeny. She served active duty in the Army during Desert Storm and retired from the Army Reserves. Diane worked as a computer operator for American Republic Insurance and CDS. She enjoyed going to the casino, camping, and spending time with her family. Her greatest love was her grandchildren, Junior, Nick, Shyere, and Shakarian.

Diane is survived by her children, Brandy (Metrick) Young and Jack Van Sickle; four grandchildren; father, Robert Porter; brothers, Allen, Terry, Jerome, Michael, Gary, Larry, and Bill; sisters, Bonnie, Lorraine, Caroline, and Robin; lifetime friend and ex-husband, Emory Van Sickle; and many nieces; nephews; cousins; and beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Porter.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family

Emma Branham

Emma G. Branham, 94, died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Hospice Kavanagh House in West Des Moines. She had been residing at the Genesis Senior Living Center in Des Moines. There are no immediate survivors.

Maurine Coe

Maurine L. Harris Coe passed away Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Services will be held 1pm Tuesday at the Altoona Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8pm Monday at the funeral home where the family will be present from 5 to 8pm.

Maurine was born icon July 4, 1921 in Malcom, Iowa to Sarah and Maurice Brewer. She worked as a secretary to the curator of the State of Iowa Historical Building for 20 years, retiring in 1986. Maurine served on the school board of Southeast Polk Community School District for 17 years. Maurine was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the Iowa Genealogy Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists, the Colonial Dames of America, the National Society of New England Women and the Alpha Society, a poetry group. Maurine enjoyed genealogy, reading, playing cribbage, collecting lighthouses, and knitting.

She is survived by her husband, Floyd Coe; her son, Craig Harris (Carla) of Davis, CA; her daughters, Linda Harris of Altoona and Vicki Neilson (Gregory )of Sandy, OR; her step-daughter, Jeannine Armstrong (Tom) of Florida; by her five grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Vernon Harris and by her sister, Jean Schnoebelen

Memorial contributions may be made to either Highland Park Presbyterian Church, the American Heart Association or the Altoona Public Library.

In honor of Maurine please wear her favorite color, Red.

Junetta Horsburgh

Junetta “Jean” Horsburgh, 89, died Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Iowa Health Taylor House Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 10, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral Home.

Jean was born icon October 14, 1918. She lived in the Des Moines area for over 50 years. Jean enjoyed crocheting, gardening, making Christmas candy, fishing and spending time at the lake

Jean is survived by her son, Mike (Pam) Donahue; daughter, Pat Horsburgh; grandchildren, Mike Donahue II and Brandy Donahue. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Horsburgh and son, Danny Donahue.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Iowa Lung Association.

Thomas Tungland

Thomas (Tom) O. Tungland, 76 passed away December 6, 2007 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be 1:30pm Monday, December 10, 2007 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service.

Tom was born icon October 17, 1931 in Jackson, MN to Carrie and Adolph Tungland. He was a graduate of East High School and had worked for Iowa Power and Light Co . for 34 years. He served in the US air Force during the Korean War. Tom was a lifetime member of the Ambassadors Shrine Unit and enjoyed driving children to the Shriner’s Children’ Shriner’s Hospital. He also enjoyed driving the golf carts the first day of the Iowa State Fair to raise funds for the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Tom spent time with his friends at the Eagle’s Lodge 109 but, most of all, he enjoyed his family.

Tom is survived by his loving wife Pat of 31 years. His son; Tom of Des Moines, daughters: Lynn (Mark) Gillman of Franklin, TN and Denise (Keith) Van Egdom of Dodgeville, WI. He is further survived by his step-children: Nora Kinsey of Council Bluffs, Alan Kinsey of Iowa City, Lisa (Bill) Kirby and Sara (Kirk) Lee of Des Moines.

He is blessed with 14 grandchildren and one great grandson. Tom leaves his sisters: Sarah Emery of Ankeny and Marcella (Jack) Oatts of Jefferson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and five brothers. Tom was especially close to his brother Bob and has missed him for the last 18 years. They are now together again.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House or the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Zelpha Walk

Zelpha “Vicky” May Walk, 82, of Des Moines, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2007. The visitation will be from 3 to 6 PM Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Vicky will be cremated following the visitation, and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 13th at the First Presbyterian Church, 3100 Easton Blvd in Des Moines.

Vicky was born icon to Eddis and Christina (Mowry) Dunbar on September 5, 1925 in Casey, Iowa. She loved gathering with family and friends. Her front door was always open. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, traveling, politics, reading, writing and volunteering, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Vicky was the proprietor of Vicky’s Lounge and Vicky’s Pour House in downtown Des Moines.

She was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Highland Park Garden Club and had just published a book of her poetry. At the time of Her death she was doing what she loved best - helping others; most recently through the Visiting Nurse Services.

Vicky is survived by her children Karen (Ben) Heathcote, Barbara (Allen) Olson, Kathleen (Dick) Moore, Susan Smith, Mark Nicholson, and Tim (Melissa) Walk; step-daughters JoAnn Garmon and Kathy Walk; nephew Alan (Vicky) See; grandchildren Kelly (Jeff), Scott, Steven, Matthew, Anna, Andrew, Tyler, Erik, Spencer, and Seth. Vicky was preceded in death by her husband Frank, sister Wilma See and parents. Memorial contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.

Harold Belken

Harold K. Belken, 78 died peacefully December 7, 2007 at Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. He was born icon November 10, 1929 to George and Orva Belken in Emmetesburg, IA.

Harold was a retired installation technician from Northwestern Bell Telephone where he had been past President of the C.W.A.. Harold always felt it was his civic duty to give back to the community and was proud to serve on many boards and committees, including the Des Moines City Council and Board of Adjusments, IAACT and Board of Directors for DMACC. He was a past Chairman of the Democratic Party Southside district. Harold also retired as a Captain from the Iowa Air Guard. He was a life member of Home Masonic Lodge, St. Johns Lutheran Church, and a life member of American Legion Post 659.

Harold will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who never had an unkind word. He was always a friend, a devoted son, husband , father and grandfather. His legacy will carry on in the lives he touched. He was well loved and will be remembered for all his kindness.

He is survived by his loving wife, L.Nadine; His children; Jeannine (Mike) McDaniel, Judith Belken, George (Jan) Belken and Michael Belken. Five grandchildren; Marissa, Mallory, Kimberly, Kirstin and Katherine. He also leaves a brother Robert Belken.

Funeral services will be 11:00am Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 6th and Keo.with visitation Monday from 4:00-8:00pm at the church.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister, Doris.

Kimberlyn Dix

Kimberlyn D. Dix, 45, died Saturday, December 8, 2007 at home. Kim enjoyed riding Harley’s, camping, cat fishing, gardening, her position as a Sales Consultant at Qwest and walking her dogs Simba and Harley. One of her greatest joys was the adventures with her grandchildren which included fishing with Chelsea.

Kim is survived by her husband Mike Dix of Adel; parents, Nile and Donna McCoy of Newton, IA; daughters, Nicki (Courtney) Christianson, Heather Schoenherr, Kristi Dix; sons, Jeremiah Schoenherr, Josh (Jemeela) Schoenherr; brothers, Doug (Debbie) Hasselman, Shawn Clements, Roger Hasselman; sisters, Cindy (Jeff) Walraven; grandchildren, Chelsea and Dylan; her in-laws Ronald Dix of East Dubuque, IL, Shirley (Rick) Gassman of Dubuque, IA; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 12, 2007 from 5 to 8:00 p.m., funeral service on Thursday, December 13 at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. The family wishes to thank Iowa Hospice for all of their assistance. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Island Park in Adel, Iowa.

Susan Courtney

Susan Lee Courtney, 59, passed away Saturday, December 8, 2007 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 12 Noon Friday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines at 2pm Friday.

Susan was born icon November 20, 1948 in Des Moines to Virginia and Rodney Courtney Sr. She graduated from Lincoln High School and attended University of Iowa. Susan worked at the MS foundation, Easter Seals and Younkers. She also was a teacher at a preschool center. Susan belonged to Christ the King Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, was a very good cook, and enjoyed reading and writing. She liked playing guitar.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Katharine Murphy (Jonathan); her granddaughter, Trinity; her brother, Rodney Courtney Jr.; her sister, Chriss Anne Meline; her 4 nieces and 1 nephew and 3 great nephews.
