Richard Turnquist

Richard T. Turnquist, 85, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. Richard wished to donate his body to the University of Iowa. A celebration of life will be held Sunday, March 16, 2008 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Country Club Crossing Mobile Home Park Club House, 1101 Hickory Boulevard in Altoona.

Richard was born icon January 15, 1923 in Des Moines. He worked as a laborer at Firestone for many years. He also served in the United States Army during World War II.

Richard is survived by his four daughters: Sheryl (Tim) Stanford, Marla Wells, Pam (Don) Bishop, and Evelyn Oliver (Ron Harrison); his step-son Edward James Pepper; 6 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one great great grandchild on the way; and his sister Mae Crowell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hulda and Carl Turnquist, his wife, Rose, and his five siblings.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Richard.

Susan Larrew-Barnhart

Sue Barnhart, 51, born icon February 9, 1957 at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, passed away suddenly of a heart attack in the early morning hours of March 9, 2008 at Broadlawns Medical Center.

Sue was a lifelong resident of Iowa. She spent the first 11 years of her education in the Saydell School District and was a 1975 graduate of Urbandale High School. She went on to complete her education in the Culinary Arts School at DMACC.

Sue was preceded in death by her first husband, Mike Larrew and her mother, Rose Mary Heyne. She is survived by her husband, Jack Barnhart of Des Moines; her stepchildren, Jack Barnhart II, Becky Jo Bordenaro and Trisha Barnhart, all of Des Moines, Mike Larrew Jr. of Boone, IA and Bobby Larrew of Chicago, IL; her father, Clayton Heyne of Osceola, IA; brothers, Dean Heyne of the Cayman Islands, Lynn Heyne of Severville,TN, Stan Heyne of Benkelman, NE, Lorn Heyne, Col. USAF Germany and Alan Heyne of Kansas City, MO; sister, Roxan Evins of Blockton, IA.

She was well loved and shall be missed by all who knew her.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mildred Hamilton

Mildred Hamilton, 86, died Monday, March 10, 2008 at The Norwalk Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home 605 Lyon St., with burial in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home.

Mildred was born icon November 25, 1921 to Jesse and Ada Green. She loved bingo, rummy and dancing.

Mildred is survived by her daughters; Wanda (Jake) Sawatzky, Joyce (Jim) Gillespie, Glenda (Shirley) McFarland, son, John (Di) Hamilton, 21 Grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Connie Knapp, brother, Jesse”Jake” Green, sister, Viola “Dolly” Wilson.

Myrl "Marie" King

Myrl Marie King, 70, died Thursday, March 13, 2007 at Kavanagh on 56th St. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with Pastor Ken Ahntholz officiating. Burial will follow at Warren Powers Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Lynn King (companion, Jim Randolph); sister, Joyce (Jerry) Davis, Ruth (John) Ghindea and Cindy (Del) Parker; brothers, Roger (Nancy) Hayes, Oscar (Judy) Hayes and Bob (Peggy) Hayes; aunt and uncle, Rosie and Ross Miller; sister-in-law, Doris King; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James King; parents, Buford and Mary Hayes; and her step-father, Bob Seals.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

Thomas J. Vanblaricum

Thomas Vanblaricum, infant son of Joe and Claudia passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Thomas is survived by his mommy and daddy and sister, Cheyenne. His paternal grandparents, Tom and Kim Vanblaricum; maternal grandmother, Tammy and Tim Stevens; maternal grandfather, Claude Strauser, great-grandparents, Delores Vanblaricum, Patsy and Richard Parks, Marian Wynn, Darrel and Cathy Roach, Carol Kimbel and Janet Stevens.

We love and miss you.

Stanley Miller

Stanley Miller, 87, of Altoona died Monday at the Kavanagh House on 56th. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2008 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW with Pastor Chris Humburg officiating; visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Stuart Cemetery in Adelphi.

Stanley was born icon September 11, 1920 on a farmstead near Adelphi to Albert Lee and Eva Irene Miller. He attended Woodland Hills School through the eighth grade and graduated from East High in 1938. Stanley proudly served in the Army during WWII in North Africa and Italy. He farmed in northwest Iowa prior to working for Library Binding Service and retired from there after 25 years of service. Having put his faith in Jesus Christ as his personal savior, Stanley’s favorite bible verses were John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8-9. He was a charter member of Altoona Regular Baptist Church. Stanley was a very loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather.

Stanley is survived by his wife of 66 years, Virginia; his children, Jay (Rhonda) Miller, and James (Diane) Miller; his grandchildren Chad Miller (Manda) and Amie and Keri Miller; his great-grandchildren, Madeline and Eli Miller and Reese Law. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Juluis, Martin, Lee and Arthur; and his sister, Thelma.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Altoona Regular Baptist Church building fund.

Glenn E. Thacker, Sr.

Glenn E. Thacker Sr., 66, of Lineville passed away at his home on March 12, 2008. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Saturday evening at the funeral home. Glenn was born icon in Des Moines and is survived by his wife, Marylan of Lineville, his children, Barb Paske (Terrill) of Oklahoma City, OK, Glenn, Jr. “Bud” Thacker (Latesha) of Murdo, SD, Sandra Meek (Jimmy) of Lineville, IA, Karen Kirsch (Chris) of Lineville, IA, Carolyn “Squeak” Allen (Marshall) of Des Moines, IA, his grandkids, Elizabeth, Amanda, Teddy, Nate, Sam, SueAnn, James, Katie, Colton and Hunter, his great grandkids, Ryan, Mary, Alyssa, Cory, Emily and Alexus as well as 4 Brothers and 4 Sisters. He is preceded in death by his parents his 2 brothers and 1 sister.

Louise Weissinger

Louise Stanfield Weissinger, 86, formerly of Waukee, died Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Private graveside services will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7pm Thursday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home,605 Lyon Street

Louise was born icon July 23, 1921 to Harry and Pauline Stanfield in Ankeny, IA. She was a 1939 graduate of East High School. Louise was employed in the payroll department at Broadlawns Hospital from 1939 to 1960. Beginning in 1960 she held the position of Executive Assistant at Ernst and Young until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, past member of National Secretaries Association and Soroptimist Club and volunteered at Waukee Public Library for many years.

Louise is survived by her nieces, Judy (Bob)Oliver, Diana Crank and Christine (Terry) Eblen, all of Des Moines; and her great nephews, Eric Gillaspy of Littleton, CO., Austin Elder and Rob (Brenda) Oliver, all of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Weissinger and her sister, Helen Crank.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Stella Coffin

Stella Margaret Coffin, 79, went to be with her Lord, Monday, March 10, 2008 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines. Stella was born icon on August 23, 1928 in San Jose, CA to Rudolfo Salmoron and Josephine Guidicotti. She married icon Laddie Lee Coffin on August 12, 1950. Laddie has been by her side for almost 58 years.

Stella worked as a sales clerk for Walkers Shoe store for 20 years and met each customer with a smile. She also worked part time at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. She never knew a stranger and would always make you feel like you knew her for years. Stella was loved by many people. Stella loved riding her bike and went on many Ragbrai trips. On her trips across Iowa, she would make many new friends that she loved.

She is survived by her husband, Laddie; sons, Sidney (Jaime) of Chino Valley, AZ, Robert (Cindy) of Hillsborough, NC, Mark (Sandy) Coffin of Beaumont, TX, Laddie Jay of Las Vegas, NV; sister, Mildred Watts of Roseville, CA and brother, Robert Perez of Talent, OR. She also has many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Stella was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Delores Parades and Harriet Delema and daughter, Linda Lorraine.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2008 at All Saints Catholic Church, 650 NE 52nd Avenue, burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will visit with friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, 2008 with a 5 p.m. scripture service at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines.

Memorial Contributions can be made to Ramsey Village - Alzheimer’s Unit, 1611 27th St. Des Moines, IA 50310.

Carolyn Bowers

Carolyn Ellen Gillespie Bowers, 73, passed away March 8, 2008 at the Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House. Memorial service will be held 5pm Tuesday at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines. Following the service a reception will be held at the funeral home.

Carolyn was born icon May 20, 1934 in Des Moines to Sherlock and Madge Gillespie. She attended St. Joseph’s Academy. Carolyn retired from the DOT as a truck router and had also worked as an insurance salesperson at John Hancock as well as personnel manager at Woolco. She was a loving mother. Carolyn loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed reading. She loved to laugh.

Carolyn is survived by her children, Kathy (Brian) Barlean, Carey (Craig) Swanson, Trey (C.J.) Bowers, Dan (Deb) Bowers, Maggie (Jack) Jezreel and Sara Bowers; her 21 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; her sister, Pat (Dick) Mullin. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amber Elliott.

Lai Nguyen

Lai Nguyen, 79, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Taylor House Hospice. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St.

Lai was born icon August 17, 1928 in Vietnam. He came to the U.S. in 1991. Lai worked in food services for Mercy Medical Center until his retirement in 2000.

Lai is survived by his children, Huong Nguyen, Hoang (Hanh) Nguyen, Hai Nguyen and Van (Vu) Nguyen; two brothers, Luong Nguyen and Long Nguyen; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hao Bui.

Sophia Homan

Sophia T. Cordes Homan, 90, passed away, Monday, March 10, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa where she has been living for the past 34 years. Our Loving Heavenly Father has called from this earthly pilgrimage, Sophia, daughter of Ludwig Cordes and Ida C. Matthies Cordes. Sophia was born icon on August 1, 1917 in Grundy County, near Fern.

On January 21, 1948, Sophia was united in marriage to Roy P. Homan of Ackley.

She is survived by her three children, (Jim) Merlyn Cordes of Des Moines; Linda Epley (Larry) of Polk City; Gail Osborn (Doyle) of Polk City; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, 6 sisters, 3 brothers and her husband, Roy P. Homan.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2008 at St. John’s Church of Christ, 716 3rd Ave., Ackley, IA. Family will visit with friends from 5 to 8 p.m., with 7 p.m. prayer service on Wednesday, March 12 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.

To Baccam

To Baccam, 56, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Mercy Hospital from heart complications. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue.

To was born icon January 15, 1952 to Du and Kinh Baccam, in Muang Tai. He then moved to Iowa in 1975. To was a hard worker whom loved to help his family and the community. To enjoyed playing music, playing a variety of sports, and fishing.

To is survived by his wife, Kim Baccam; father, Du Baccam; daughters, Malisa (Adam) Baccam – Thiphavong and Marshalle Baccam; son, Peter Baccam; sisters, Bach Lovan and Nongkhane (Khamphat) Ung, and many other loving family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Kinh Bacthi.
