Marvin White

Marvin E. White, 67, passed on Friday, August 22, 2008 at Taylor House. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Kathryn; three sons, Russell, Richard and Robbie (Heidie) White; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Payton, Shelby and Dakota.

Memorial services will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Hamilton’s Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW in Altoona, with visitation starting at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to establish college funds for Marvin’s grandchildren.

Lily Belle Castings

Lily Belle Castings, 94, died August 19, 2008, at Ridgecrest Healthcare Center. Graveside services will be held August 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Lowman Cemetery, Runnells, Iowa.

Lily was born icon in Riserville, Iowa, to Lola and Joseph Hupton March 8, 1914. She raised her family in Des Moines and was very active in her church. In 1967 she moved to California where she pursued a nursing career. She is survived by her daughters, Jane Dyer of LaVerne, CA, and Pat (husband Joe) Oliver of Ridgecrest; her brother, Joe Hupton of Des Moines; her grandchildren, Russ Dyer, Jim Dyer, Kim Oliver, Scott Oliver, Mike Oliver, and Shannon Dyche; and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Castings; her daughter, Judy Farrow; and her grandson, Tom Dyer.

Donations in her honor may be made to the Community of Christ Church or The Humane Society of the U.S. at https://www.hsus.org/.

Janet Ballard

Janet Mae Ballard passed away August 20,2008 at her residence in Liberty, Missouri. Janet had been a lifelong resident of Des Moines until 2006, when she moved to Liberty, Missouri to be closer to her family. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday August 23, 2008 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the Funeral Service, staring at 10:00 a.m.

Janet was born icon June 20, 1936 in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1954. Janet operated several successful businesses in her lifetime, which included Ballard Tire Service, Mother Goose Day Nursery, and a Donut Shoppe in her early years. She retired in the late 1980’s as her health started to decline.

Janet’s true joy in life was spending time with her family, and especially her 5 grandsons. She leaves behind her son, Mark, his wife Beth, and their sons Brady & Blake all of Liberty, Missouri, grandsons, Matthew, Mason, and Benjamin Ballard of Des Moines, and her brother Jay Flatt, and his wife Penny of West Des Moines. Janet was preceded in death by her son Michael Ballard, her parents Irvin & Marie Flatt, and her siblings, Jim, Jack, Jerry, Joan, George, Joe, and Jean Marie.

Memorials may be made in loving memory of Janet to the American Heart Association.

Bona Schmeling

“Bonnie” Schmeling, 67 died August 21, 2008 at her home in Des Moines. She was born icon December 19, 1940 in Des Moines to Clarence and Lenore Lemar.

A Mass of Celebration will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with burial following in Laurel Hill Cemetery. A vigil service will be 6:30p.m. Friday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home with visitation from 5-7:30 p.m.

Bonnie retired after 30 years as office manager for Marquardt Advertising/Competitive Edge. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and past vice president of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also was involved with Homebound Ministries.

Bonnie is survived by her loving husband; Don Schmeling, daughter; Sheryl (Terry) Newell; son Dave Schmeling; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and one brother, Lee Lemon.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Deborah Turner, Deb Schnoor and the Mercy 8-South nurses and staff for the wonderful care they provided for Bonnie over the past several months. They would also like to thank Mercy Hospice.

Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice or St. Anthony’s Altar and Rosary Society.

Charles Lukenbill

Charles Lukenbill, 67, of Indianola passed away peacefully on August 22, 2008 at Wesley The Village in Indianola after a battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Indianola at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 25th, 2008 with burial following at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 5-7 P.M. Sunday at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home. Chuck was a sales manager for Master Builders for 35 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janyce, of 42 years in 2000. He is survived by his son Steve (Pam) Lukenbill of Indianola, his daughter Carla (Tom) Wolf of Woodbury, Minnesota, his brothers Larry, Keith and Ken Lukenbill, all of Des Moines, his sister JoAnn Pollock of North Dakota, his five grandchildren Jesse Lukenbill, Whitney Rivas, Ashley Wolf, Christopher Wolf and Olivia Lukenbill as well as his 2 great grandchildren Kristen and Joaquin Rivas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Wesley Hospice.

Marjorie Leinhauser

Margie Fern Leinhauser, 83, died Friday, August 22, 2008 at Kavanagh House on 56th St. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 N.W. 60th Ave. with burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Margie was born icon April 13, 1925 in Minneapolis, Kansas. She was the owner of a Dairy Queen on the south side of Des Moines and worked 16 hour days to provide for her family. She later managed the coffee house at Johnny & Kay’s for many years, then went on to manage Cambell’s Nutrition Center in which she retired from after 25 years of service. Margie was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Everyone that knew her will remember her as a person with a heart always willing to help anyone she could. She lived a selfless life, continuously giving to others. Most important to her was her family. She lived for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margie was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and volunteered for many years at the Mercy Hospital flower shop.

Margie is survived by her husband Robert Leinhauser; sons, Chris and Richard Taylor; sisters, Mona Roberts, Jan Larocque and Barb Roeder; brothers, Chet Graves, Jim Graves, Don Chapin and Ron Chapin; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kavanagh House on 56th St. in Margie’s memory.

Lane Kelley

Lane and Allison Kelley, infant twin son and daughter of Candace and Chad Kelley, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2008 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Private services will be held at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway with burial to follow at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

In addition to their parents, Lane and Allison are survived by their grandparents, Doug and Michelle Meyer of Nebraska and Joleen and Jim Robinson of Storm Lake; great-grandfathers, Bill Brannon and Robert Meyer; great-grandmothers, Verna Schumann and Velda Robinson; many aunts, uncles, cousins and other loving relatives. They were preceded in death by their great-grandmothers, Shirley Meyer and Wanda McGuire, and their great-grandfathers, Leonard Schumann and Floyd Robinson.

Mary Lint

Mary Ann Lint, 64, died August 24, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. A visitation will be held August 26, 2008, from 5-8 PM at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines.

Mary Ann is survived by her sons; Mike (Kyle Carney) Booth, and Carl Lint, Jr., her daughters; LaVina (Mike) Dalby, Lori Smith, and Margaret Lint; and her 5 grandchildren

Memorial contributions may be directed toward Hospice of Central Iowa in loving memory of Mary Ann.

Edward Simpson

Edward C. Simpson, 90, died Monday, August 25, 2008 in Des Moines. Edward was born icon on March 1, 1918 in Duluth, Minnesota.

Ed served in the US Army Air Corp during World War II until his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked for the Des Moines Water Works until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and going to the Neal Smith Reservoir to see buffalo.

He is survived by sons, Gary, Kenny and Eddie Simpson; daughters, Patty Simpson and Ruby Wallace; three grandchildren; multiple great grandchildren; sister, Elsie Colestead and brother, Dave Simpson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice; his parents; three brothers and one sister.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008 at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Family will visit with friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Ed.

Mary Rose Davenport

West Des Moines - Mary Rose Davenport, 81, passed away on August 20, 2008. She was born icon in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Elizabeth and Clifford Ott and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1945. Mary Rose worked for Amoco Credit Card Center as a Customer Service Representative. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star in Oskaloosa, West Des Moines Christian Church, and a volunteer with the Animal Rescue League. She enjoyed traveling and had been to all 50 states. A devoted mother and grandmother, Mary Rose enjoyed immensely, spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Griffiths; granddaughters, Jennifer (Chad) King, Ashlee Griffiths, Elisabeth (Ron) Hardy, Kimberlee Griffiths; brother, James Ott; sister, Margaret (Dean) Mains; sister-in-law, Dena Ott; great-grandchildren, Kelcie and Charles King, Payton Hardy and Brayden Mulligan along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Irvin and Jerry Ott; sister-in-law, Geraldine Ott.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Pkwy, West Des Moines, visitation from 12 noon to 1 p.m., funeral services at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway. Memorial contributions may be made to Fountain West, Iowa Health Hospice or the Animal Rescue League.

Ashton Gilliland

Ashton L. Gilliland, 3, of DeSoto, Iowa passed away August 20, 2008. Funeral services will be held at Hamilton’s Funeral Home on Lyon St, Monday at 1pm. Visitation will be Monday from 11am to 1pm. Burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Ashton was born icon April 2, 2005 in Des Moines to Justin and Dawnielle Gilliland.

He loved skateboarding, fishing, riding bikes, playing basketball watching movies, and jumping on his trampoline.

Ashton is survived by his parents, Justin Gilliland, Dawnielle Gilliland; brother Nathan Gilliland; Aunt Nastassia Goff and Uncle Mikey Grandparents, Roger Gilliland, Malia Opseth, and Dennis Korf; Great Grandparents, Patty Grafton, and Michael Grafton Richard Opseth, and Wilma Opseth. He was preceded in death by his Grandmother Robin Ridgeway.

Earl Alford

Earl Alford, 53, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, April 15, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Earl is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Monica; children, Jennifer, Heather, Jacob and James; nine grandchildren; brothers, Jimlee Todd, Charles, Ronnie and Donnie Alford; sisters, Shirley Stepp and Lillie Alford; his very dear nephew, Curtis, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt and Mae Alford; and his siblings, Jerry and Betty Alford.

The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Earl.

Veronica Deeds

Veronica Deeds, 83, died April 17, 2009 at the Bright Kavanagh House.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th, Des Moines, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A visitation will occur Tuesday, April 21, 2009 from 5-8 PM at Hamilton's Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th, with a vigil service at 7 PM.

Veronica was born icon November 11, 1925 to Loretta and John Zinnen in Hobart, Indiana.

Veronica was united in marriage to J.H. Deeds, they were married icon for 64 years. She worked primarily as a billing clerk. Upon retirement they built a house on Lake Thunderhead, where they spent over 20 years, during that time she was very involved with St. Mary's Catholic Church in Unionville MO.

Veronica is survived by her children; Lynda Deeds, Jayme Cox, James (Lori) Deeds, all of Des Moines, and Bernadette McLeod of Gadsden AL; 9 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Doris Brilliant.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; daughter, Loretta Easley; infant daughter, Lynnette; grandson, Dale Rumbaugh and brother, Johnny Zinnen.

Memorial contributions will be directed toward St. Mary's Catholic Church by her family.
