John Fenton

John "Bill" Fenton, 91, of Mount Pleasant died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, in Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant. Arrangements are pending at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.

Verlee Lantz

Verlee M. Lantz, 95, of Hillsboro, died at 3:10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2002, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

Born Dec. 12, 1906, at Fredonia, she was the daughter of Lee and Blanche Hunt Morrison. She married Stanley F. Lantz Dec. 25, 1926, in Columbus Junction. He died Aug. 4, 1974.

She graduated as valedictorian of the Columbus Junction High School class of 1925. She moved to Hillsboro in 1941, serving many years as Hillsboro town clerk and telephone operator. She was a charter member of the Alpha Club.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Newbold of Hillsboro; two sons, Daryl "Butch" Lantz of Roy, Wash., and Maurice DeWayne Lantz of Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and four great–great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister, and a son.

Open visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Lantz will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Pedrick Funeral Home with the Revs. Robert Price and Roger Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Van Buren County Hospital. Contributions may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 98, Hillsboro 52630.

DONALD E. THAMES

Funeral Arrangements for Mr. Donald E. Thames, 55, of Chicago, Illinois, who died on Thursday, December 2, 2004, at Great River Medical Center, are pending at Leak and Sons Funeral Home in Chicago, Illinois. Prugh Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

SARAH E. MARLAND

A Celebration of Life of Mrs. Sarah E. Marland, 97, of Burlington, who died on Sunday, December 5, 2004, at her home, will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2004, at the home of her daughter, located at 1301 Aetna, between the hours of 2:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. with a memorial service at 3:00 P.M. Interment will be held in Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego, California at a later date. As per the wishes of Mrs. Marland, her body has been cremated. A memorial has been established in her memory.

OPAL KUNTZ

Funeral Arrangements for Mrs. Opal Kuntz, 90, of Burlington, who died on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at her home, are pending at Prugh Funeral Service.

Virginia Eller

Virginia L. Eller, 83, of Keokuk, died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, in Hamilton, Ill.

Born May 29, 1921, in Wayland, Mo., she was the daughter of Oscar and Clara Linder Moore. On Sept. 11, 1940, she married Francis Hoewing in Palmyra, Mo. He died Sept. 26, 1967. On May 1, 1971, she married Ray Eller in Oskaloosa. He died Nov. 30, 1989.

Mrs. Eller was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She also worked as a bookkeeper for State Central Bank.

She was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk and Argyle area and was a graduate of Wayland High School. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, where she was a member of the women's sewing group and active with the annual bazaar. She was a member of King's Daughters.

Survivors include two sons, Ron Hoewing of Rimrock, Ariz., and Gerry Hoewing of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren; six great–grandchildren; and one brother, Maurice Moore of Marshalltown.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Eller will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, with the Rev. Terry Mahnke officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Vincennes.

A memorial has been established for First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.

John Walsh

John Forrest Walsh, 80, of Burlington, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Services are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Mary Miller

Mary Edna Miller, 96, a lifelong resident of Warsaw, Ill., died at 7 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Montebello Health Care Center in Hamilton, Ill.

Born Dec. 24, 1904, in Alton, Ill., she was the daughter of William J. and Frances Edna Boone Cunnan. She married Virgil G. Miller on Feb. 6, 1929, in Carthage, Ill. He died June 6, 1996.
Mrs. Miller attended schools in Keokuk and Warsaw, Ill.

She was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church of Warsaw, Spunky Point Senior Citizens of Warsaw and the American Association of Retired Persons.

Survivors include one son, Robert E. Miller of Warsaw; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather and a daughter-in-law.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Miller will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Warsaw, with the Rev. Mark Eddy officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.

Memorials have been established for her church and Spunky Point Senior Citizens.

Dwain Gipe

Dwain D. Gipe, 81, of rural Media, Ill., died at 6:32 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital in Galesburg, Ill.

Born Oct. 12, 1919, in Raritan, Ill., he was the son of Garold G. and Beatrice Rankin Gipe. On Nov. 2, 1946, he married Jessie McDonald in St. Charles, Mo.
Mr. Gipe farmed in the Raritan and Media communities.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the 42nd Airborne in the South Pacific. He was a member of Stronghurst American Legion Post 765, Roseville Masonic Lodge AF & AM 519, Peoria Mohammed Shrine, Monmouth Low 12 and Monmouth Veterans of Foreign Wars 2301.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Don Gipe and Ron Gipe, both of Media; three daughters, Kathy N. Thomas of Galesburg, Connie Wetters of Warsaw, Ind., and Candy Moenter of Akron, Ohio; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Dallas Gipe of Encino, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Corman Memorial Home in Roseville, Ill.

The funeral for Mr. Gipe will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Corman Memorial Home. Burial with military rites conducted by Stronghurst American Legion Post 765 will be in Raritan Cemetery.

There will be a Masonic service at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Corman Memorial Home.

Memorials have been established for the Raritan Fire Department and Stronghurst Ambulance.

Ethel Christner

Ethel Marie Christner, 91, of Wayland, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Parkview Home in Wayland.

Born Aug. 18, 1909, she was the daughter of Axel E. and Cora Sammons Anderson. On Feb. 24, 1927, she married Samuel J. Christner in Henry County. He died in 1994.
Mrs. Christner farmed with her husband in the Mount Union and Wayland area.

She was a resident of Parkview Home for eight years. She was a member of Wayland United Methodist Church New Life Parish. She enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting and making quilts for her family.

Survivors include two daughters, Rozena Wyse of Washington and Georganna Tschantz of Decatur, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 16 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one infant son and one son-in-law.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland, where the family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Christner will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Wayland Methodist Church in Wayland, with the Rev. Kenneth J. Hartman officiating. Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Wayland Methodist Church, Parkview Home or Hospice of Washington County.

Garnet Barbero

Garnet G. Barbero, 90, of Macomb, Ill., died at 7:20 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at her home.

Born May 11, 1911, near Good Hope, Ill., she was the daughter of C. Ray and Millie A. Randolph Spicer. On June 9, 1932, she married Fred E. McNeff. On May 31, 1947, she married Earl N. Barbero in Jacksonville. He died Jan. 31, 1996.
Mrs. Barbero worked for the McDonough County Treasurer's Office, Camp Ellis and for Zausner Foods of New York City as manager, and laboratory technician in Macomb, Ill., and Monroe, Wis. She tutored all grades of school children for many years until her retirement in 1975.

She attended Western Illinois Teachers College and was a violinist, playing for the college, schools, churches, weddings, clubs and funerals, and also giving violin lessons. She was a lifelong member of Macomb Wesley United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Millie M. Cale of Macomb; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-niece she raised, Debbie Welcome; and one sister, Hazel Carson of Macomb.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.

Visitation will begin after 3 p.m. today at Clugston-Tibbetts Funeral Home in Macomb, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Barbero will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lori Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb, Wesley Methodist Church in Carman, Ill., and McDonough District Hospital Hospice Program.

Katherine Touhey

Katherine C. Touhey, 94, of River Hills Village, Keokuk, died at 8:25 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at River Hills Village.

Born May 7, 1907, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of Henry and Kate Brady Miller. On June 21, 1926, she married William J. Touhey in Keokuk. He died Oct. 18, 1985.
Mrs. Touhey worked for Streeter's Decorating for 22 years.

She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and a graduate of St. Peter's High School. She was active in the American Red Cross and Business & Professional Women.

Survivors include one son, William J. Touhey Jr. of Wilmington, Del.; one daughter, Mary Katherine (Sis) Kirchner of Sun City West, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral Mass Tuesday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk.

The funeral Mass for Mrs. Touhey will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at All Saints Catholic Church, with the Rev. Christopher David officiating. Burial will be in Catholic Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Keokuk Catholic schools.

Patricia Wilson

Patricia Wilson, 78, of Wapello, died Friday morning, July 20, 2001, at her home.

Born March 17, 1923, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Ora E. and Nellie Anna Pontzius Wilson.
Miss Wilson was a 1940 graduate of Wapello High School and attended Iowa State College in Ames for one year. She then worked at Hanford, Wash., during World War II. She moved to Arizona and attended a beauty school in Phoenix and later graduated from the University of Arizona at Tucson with a degree in home economics.

She became a missionary first to the Navajo Reservation at Window Rock, Ariz., and then to Nome and other Alaskan locations. For many years, she was with the African Evangelical Fellowship at Zambia, Africa, and also did various mission work throughout the United States. She continued for more years with Operation Mobilization in locations like Austria, Ireland and England.

She was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church at Wapello. She enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially during her Alaskan missions.

Survivors include two sisters, Lillian Wilson and Effie Wilson, both of Wapello; two nieces; two nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

The body of Miss Wilson has been donated to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. Burial will be in Long Creek Cemetery in rural Wapello upon completion of study.

A memorial service will be planned for a later date.

Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello is in charge of arrangements.
