Pastor John W. "Bill" Green

Pastor Bill Green passed away on April 14, 2009. Visitation will be at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines, IA on Thursday, April 16, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at First Federated Church. A private family interment is scheduled for a later date.

Bill was born icon on July 6, 1929 to Mabel and James Green. He graduated from East High School in 1947, served in the US Army, and spent the remainder of his life in Des Moines. He was self-employed for 40 years in the business forms industry and then thoroughly enjoyed serving as visiting pastor for ten years at First Federated Church. Bill loved caring for people, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife, Clarice; son, Ed (Kem) Green; grandchildren, J.D. and Emily; and a host of family and friends.

Memorial contributions may be directed to First Federated Church Debt Reduction Fund in honor of Pastor Green.

Lowell Hildreth

Lowell Otis Hildreth, passed away on April 18, 2009 at the age of 83.

Visitation will be on Friday, April 24, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, Des Moines. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in Rockwell City at the Methodist Church, with visitation at 1:00 p.m.

Lowell was born icon September 14, 1925 on a farm near Rockwell City to Otis and Grace Hildreth. He served in the U.S Army and was stationed at Pearl Harbor.

Lowell married icon Dorothy Taylor in January 1948 and they were married icon for 61 years. They farmed for a number of years. He then drove a truck for Ruan Transport for 36 years. After retirement, Lowell enjoyed working part time at the Iowa State Fairgrounds as a groundskeeper.

Lowell is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children, Cindy (Chuck) Catron, Joe, (Christine) Hildreth, Marie (Ed) Myers and Will Hildreth; 7 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one sister, Kay Meyer of Rockwell City.

Preceding him in death are his parents, one sister, and one grandson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Ruby J. Flagstad

Ruby Flagstad, 77, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Ruby was born icon October 19, 1931 to John and Nellie (Powell) Martindale. She was a lifelong Des Moines resident. Ruby was a daycare provider for over 20 years then worked as a building technician at the Polk County Administration Building for 10 years. She loved spending time with family, cooking and going to Prairie Meadows to play the Sizzlers.

Ruby is survived by her children, Craig (Deb) Brooks, Tamara Mooers, Kimberly (Tim) Knapp, Ruby (Ray) Modlin and Diana (Tom) Anderson; a brother, Lyle Martindale; companion and friend, Donald Schneider; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Flagstad and her daughter, Deborah Carter.

Lowell Fuller

Lowell R. Fuller passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2009. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Sheridan Park United Methodist Church, 4100 E. Sheridan Avenue. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services, burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Lowell was born icon in Des Moines on December 28, 1922. He was a proud alumnus of East High School, from which he graduated in 1941. Until recent years, Lowell and his friends never missed an opportunity to cheer on their team at an East High football game.

Lowell proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a dedicated employee of Armstrong Tire and Rubber Co. for many years before his retirement. Outside of his work, he had many hobbies and interests including fishing and traveling to visit family and friends. For more than 50 years, Lowell was a member of Sheridan Park United Methodist Church where he served in countless ways.

Because of how he lived his life, Lowell leaves a tremendous legacy. He was a man who loved people and demonstrated it through many acts of kindness. He was sincerely devoted to his family and was always a loving husband, father and grandfather who offered many hugs and encouraging words. He also was giving to his friends and actively looked for opportunities to help others. The door of Lowell's home was always open to those who needed a cup of coffee or a helping hand. His generosity and love toward others were testaments to his depth of character.

Though he lived a life of service, he did his good works quietly and without fanfare. Lowell always had a grateful heart and was truly thankful for the least kindness shown to him by others. He was always the gentleman, always polite, and always caring. He was a man who had unwavering faith in God and his life was truly an example of that faith.

Lowell Fuller is survived by Mae, his much-loved wife and companion for over 66 years, and their two daughters Marjorie White and husband Bob of West Des Moines and Linda Sandy and husband Garry of Edmonds, Wa. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Rita Fleener of West Des Moines, Ia; Ray Burns of Lacona, Ia; Trisha Ostrowski of Ada, Mich. and Eric Sandy of Spring Lake, Mich.; along with eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sheridan Park United Methodist Church.

Richard Andersen

Richard S. Andersen passed away on April 15, 2009. Visitation will be held at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 1 to 2 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Glendale's Masonic Cemetery, 1550 48th St. at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Richard was born icon on July 30, 1924 to Katherine and Svend "Jack" Andersen. He served in the US Army in Europe during WWII. He was a master stonemason and bricklayer and spent most of his life in Des Moines.

He is survived by his daughters, Pamela and Norla; and eight grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Alice R. Andersen.

Bessie Kingery

Bessie Kingery, 85, passed away Saturday April 18, 2009, at Sunnyview Care Center. Bessie was born icon on September 3, 1923, to Lyda and Frank Bice in Des Moines.

Bessie is survived by her sons, Larry (Delores), Bill (Linda) and Jerry (Anna) Kingery; 17 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and her sister, Mabel McElvogue. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; son, Earl Jr.; two grandchildren; two sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday April 21, 2009, at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines; burial will follow in Berwick Cemetery. Visitation with family present will be 6–8 p.m. Monday April 20, 2009, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Bessie.

Doris Sparland

Dorie, age 86, died Monday, April 13, 2009 under the heartfelt care of The Taylor Hospice House. She was born icon January 1, 1923 to Ralph and Alice McCullough at their home in Des Moines.

Some of Dorie’s greatest joys were her family, friendships, gardening and past years golfing. Her sweetness was contagious and will be missed by many, especially her co-workers of these past eight years at Willis Auto Campus.

Dorie is survived by daughter, Stacia Lundberg; sons, Kent (DeLane), Kirk and Blake (Carol) Sparland; grandsons, Matt and Brian (Joy) Sparland, Adam Lundberg; granddaughter, Lisa Sparland; great granddaughter, Anna Lundberg; sisters-in-law, Dorothy McCullough and Dorothy Sparland; nine nieces and nephews and extended family. Dorie was preceded in death by her husband, Dale W. Sparland and her brother, Harold McCullough.

Her family will receive friends from 5 to 8pm, Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Graveside Service will be 11 am, Friday, April 17, 2009 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House in loving memory of Dorie.

R. Kenneth Kendall

Robert Kenneth Kendall, 88, died peacefully Monday, April 13, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with burial at Altoona Cemetery.

Ken was born icon May 22, 1920 to William and Odena Kendall in Altoona, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State University, after which he joined the Army Air Force. He served in World War II in photo intelligence.

He spent his career as an architect. At one time he was the only person in the state of Iowa who held licenses for Architecture, Engineering, and Landscape Architecture. He was president of the firm Kendall Griffith Russell and Artiaga, Architects Engineers Planners, Inc. When asked if he had a hobby, he always said it was his “work�?. Ken was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Institute of Architects.

Ken is survived by his son, Rick of Oakbrook, IL; his daughter, Rebecca of Lancaster, CA; his granddaughter Destiny Lorraine of Lancaster, CA; and his brother William of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lorraine; and his son Robert Karlton Kendall.

Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th St. in Des Moines. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in loving memory of Ken.

Gladys Van Sickle

Gladys Van Sickle, 93, died, April 18, 2009 at Trinity Care Center in Des Moines IA.

A funeral service will be held 11 AM, Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial to follow at the Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will occur, 5-8 PM, Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Gladys was born icon August 10, 1915 to Merle and Ernst Lawrence in New Virginia Ia.

Gladys was a member of the Union Park Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed social gatherings and helping others in need.

Gladys is survived by her sons, Donald (June), David, Larry (Pat) Van Sickle; daughter, Eleanor (George) Mackrell; brother, Paul Lawrence; sister, Betty Doughty; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Van Sickle, Sr. her parents; 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

Memorial contributions may be directed toward the Children’s Ministry at the Union Park Baptist Church.

Hazel V. Gordon

Hazel Gordon, 93, died, December 23, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born icon on December 21, 1916.

Hazel was a member of Highland Park Christian Church. She worked for the DNR.

She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Shirley) Gordon of Austin, TX, Richard (Linda) Gordon of Polk City, IA; daughter, Jeanne (Terry) Williamson of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Kathy, Steve, Katie, Jolene and Eric; eight great-grandchildren, Adam, Jake, Luke, Cody, Jeremy, Whitney, Mariah and Colin; brother, Dean. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; parents, John and Nellie Veenschoten; sister, Francis Buckman.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Highland Park Christian Church, 4260 NW 6th Drive, Des Moines. Friends may visit with family from 10-12 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Memorial Contributions may be made to the church in loving memory of Hazel. Arrangements are being handled by Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens.
