Edith Ann Hagen

Edith Ann Hagen, 82, passed away at her home December 23, 2009. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

Edith was an artist and loved to paint and draw. She was an animal lover and a member of the Camper Club. Her greatest passion in life was her family, especially her grandchildren. Edith was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Edith is survived by her son, A. John (Heidi) Hagen; daughter, Jeanette (Carlin) Keough; brother, Charles Tompkinson; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Wells Hagen; daughter, Grace Marie Salem; granddaughter, Faith Ann; and brothers, Robert Hartley, Frank Edgar and John George Tomkinson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, American Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.

Bernard Meek

Bernard F. Meek, 92, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009 at Trinity Luther Park.

Bernard was born icon June 7, 1917 in Des Moines to Frances and Anna (Brown) Meek. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Bernard was a dental technician for Dental Arts.

Bernard is survived by his children, Linda (Denny) Mack, Albert (Sherry) Meek and Donna Gustafson; sisters, Wilma (John) Whitehurst and Carol (Emil) Arbtin; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters; two brothers; and his wife, Florence.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be directed to Trinity Center at Luther Park or Hospice of Central Iowa.

John W. Minard

John “Jack” W. Minard, 92, passed away December 26, 2009.

Jack was born icon January 14, 1917. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. and retired from AMF.

Jack is survived by his wife, Ernestine “Tina”: daughter, Barbara (Rick) Koch; step-son, Robert (Marion) Cotter; son-in-law, Larry Thompson; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Frances; daughter, Nancy Thompson, brother, Kenneth Minard and a grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League.

Sheila Hoops

Sheila Hoops, 57, passed away of Lou Gehrig’s disease December 28, 2009.

Sheila was born icon July 23, 1952 to Clifford and Coleen (Rife) Roberts in Storm Lake, Iowa. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service.

Sheila is survived by her daughters, Courtney (Justin) Braden and Roxanne (Eric) Stotler; parents, Clifford and Coleen Roberts; sister, Karen Dudley; brother, Derald (Jenene) Roberts; grandchildren, Paige and Pierce Braden; step-grandchildren, Andrew and Erica Stotler; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at Rising Sun Cemetery.

Harold "Pete" Peterson

Harold Peterson, 62, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009. He was born icon on May 9, 1947 in Atlantic, Iowa to Eugene and Betty Peterson.

Pete proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee during the Vietnam War Era, receiving a Purple Heart for his courageous service. He loved spending time with his family, friends, fishing, working in the yard and meeting lots of new people throughout his life. Pete took pride in his 1968 BSA motorcycle and 1956 Ford Tractor. He worked 17 years as a diesel mechanic at Hicklin GM Power Company and retired as an MVS Truck Driver for the United States Postal Service after 22 years.

Pete is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Sandy; daughters, Jamie (Travis) Miller and Kelly Peterson (Joe Gonzalez); two granddaughters, Kelsie and Halleigh; his grandson, Braley whom he completely adored; one sister, Fara (Roy) Smith of Winterset; four nephews, Aaron (Krista), Marc (Trisha), and Patrick Smith and Spencer Melchert; one niece, Haley Scott and many special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Norwalk United Methodist Church, 1801 Sunset Dr. in Norwalk. The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery where military rites will be provided.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be provided to the Norwalk United Methodist Church and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Iowa Chapter in loving memory of Pete. Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Ruby Kramer

Ruby Jean Kramer, 82, passed away December 29, 2009 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Ruby was born icon September 25, 1927 in Dexter, Iowa to Walter and Betsy Hodge. She owned Midwest Vacuum and retired in 1989. Ruby worked for the Texas Junior League, was a Hospice and hospital volunteer, a member of an Episcopalian Church in Texas and the Red Hat Club.

Ruby is survived by her children, Gary, Chris, Bill and Tim Bryant, Kelly Neil, Kim Rogers and Harry Kramer II; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Kramer; sons, Carl and David Bryant; sisters, Irene Hicks and Judy Earles; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private family burial will take place at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Charles Woods

Charles Robert “Charley” Woods was born icon in Celina, Ohio, October 23, 1945, to the late Gerald “Hickory” and Hazel (Keel) Woods Buschor. He is survived by a close friend, Mandy Gerbig, Altoona, Iowa and son, Louis Woods, Willimanic, Connecticut; two brothers, Bill (Jane) Woods, St. Henry, Ohio, and Rick (Rita) Woods, Celina, Ohio; sister, Pam (Henry) Billerman, Celnia, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, Dick Feierstein and Jack Fickert, both of Celina, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Vina Woods, Celina, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Deceased are two brothers, Ernie and Gerald “Buss” Woods, and three sisters, Virginia Fickert, Jackie Feierstein and Jean Dunno; and one brother-in-law, Frank “Dino” Dunno.

He attended Celina High School. He was retired from the U.S. Navy as a first class torpedo man on submarine tenders and as a company commander at the Great Lakes Naval Base. He also worked as a security guard at the Huffy Bicycles in Celina, Ohio. Most recently he worked for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge as a preventative maintenance engineer and also for American Republic Insurance as a building maintenance engineer in Des Moines, IA. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines, IA.

Charley’s body will be cremated, and his cremated remains will be buried in Osage, IA. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Celina, Ohio at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 2010 with the Reverend David Dennis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Taylor House Hospice, 3401 E. Douglas, Des Moines, IA 50317.

Gloria Evans

Gloria Evans, 86, passed away in her beloved home on December 30, 2009. Gloria was born icon on September 25, 1923, to Edward and Myrtle Mackin in Des Moines. She was a life-long resident of Des Moines and worked at Goode’s Greenhouses for twenty years, where she was happiest surrounded by beautiful flowers. She then enjoyed thirty years of retirement working in her own gardens.

Gloria is survived by her husband of sixty-seven years, Leo (“Bing”); son, David of Little Rock, California; daughter, Mindy Branstetter of Hancock, Vermont; five grandchildren; step-brother, Darvin Dare; step-sister, Dorothy Benge; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave., Des Moines. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. A visitation with the family present will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Iowa in loving memory of Gloria; 1730 28th Street, West Des Moines, IA 50266.

Norma V. Chapman

Norma V. Chapman, 78, died from natural causes on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, LA while on vacation. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway. Visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. Thursday with a private family burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

Norma was born icon November 20, 1931 to Herbert and Eve Nelson in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose greatest joy came from caring for and spending time with her family. She was known for her special dinners and beautiful flowers. She and her husband enjoyed many exciting travels together and her children cherished their many family vacations.

Norma is survived by her husband of 58 years, Chauncey “Jake” Chapman; children, Kirk (Katie) Chapman of Logan, IA, Shawn (Cecil) Blum of Denison IA, Mitch Chapman of Council Bluffs, IA, and Dana (Brent) Zimmerman of Waukee, IA; grandchildren, Erin, Brent, Joe, CL, Kiyvon, Josh, Shawna, Ashlyn, Alaina, and Japheth; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva Fernley, Marie Faureck, and Judy Brehmer; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Eve Nelson; sisters, Zoe Barnes and Irene Cowles; brothers, Hubert, Herbert, Noel, and Guy Nelson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Mildred Jean Huffman

Mildred Jean Huffman, 95, passed away peacefully December 31, 2009 at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny.

Mildred was born icon December 3, 1914 in Rising Sun, Iowa to William and Mary Peters. She was the manager of the lunchroom at Moore school for 15 years. Mildred lived most of her life in Des Moines.

Mildred is survived by her sons, whom she cherished, Richard Huffman (Donna) of West Des Moines and Robert G. Murray (Cynthia) of Burnsville, MN; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Delbert Huffman.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 pm Sunday at Rising Sun Cemetery. Visitation will be held two hours hour prior to the service at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Iowa.

Dennis Grass

Dennis Grass, aka Dennis Wright, 60, died on Friday, January 1, 2010 at the Taylor House after a long battle with the lung disease COPD. Denny was born icon June 26, 1949 to Frosty and Evelyn Wright. He was raised in the SE bottoms of Des Moines. Denny attended East High School and retired from Ryko Mfg. after 25 years of service.

Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Forest “Frosty” Wright; mother, Evelyn Wright and brother, Mike Wright. He is survived by his one true love Mary, his wife; daughters, Kim (Ron) Smith and Melissa Wright; grandchildren, Becky, Joey, Josh and Alisha; great-grandchildren, William, Ethan and Joe-Joe; siblings, Tom Wright, Billy Joe Wright, Floyd Wright and Laura Sharpnack, all of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. with burial to follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Taylor House in loving memory of Dennis.
