Donald E. DeBurkarte
Born in York, Pennsylvania on Jun. 20, 1930
Died Feb. 1, 2004 and resided in Marion, IA.

Donald E. DeBurkarte, 73, of 2865 Highland Drive, died unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 1, 2004. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Oakland Church of the Nazarene, by the Rev. Paul Miller, with military rites. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion.

Survivors include his wife, Kay; four children, Ron DeBurkarte of Creedmoor, North Carolina, Tamra Jakoubek (John) of Brandon, Darrell DeBurkarte (Cheryl) of Newport, North Carolina and Kenneth DeBurkarte (Elizabeth) of Cedar Rapids; two step-children, Nancy Gibson (Alan) and Karen Garmon (Rick), all of Nampa, Idaho; and a brother, Emory DeBurkarte (Ruth) of Delaware.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren: Corey, Nichole, Marcy, Marisa, Alexandria, Karmann, Sarah, Joslyn, David, Danielle, Joshua, Holly, Heather, Kailee and Davon II. He was preceded in death by his first wife; his parents, a step-father, Ellsworth Knaub; a sister, Tootie Carpenter; and two brothers, Barry and Bill DeBurkarte.

Donald was born icon on June 20, 1930, in York, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Irene (Schweitzer) DeBurkarte. After graduating from high school, Don received a BA degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1963. He served in the U.S. Navy for twenty-six years, retiring as a Lieutenant in 1973. Don served all over the world during many conflicts, including the Korean Conflict, the Bay of Pigs and the Vietnam Era. He served aboard many ships, including two aircraft carriers: the USS Enterprise and USS Saratoga.

Don was married icon to Elaine Meadows on December 31, 1957 in Charleston, South Carolina. She died January 12, 1990. He then married icon Catherine “Kay” Hearn on May 16, 1992, in Cedar Rapids.

Don was manager of Logistics Support with Rockwell-Collins for fourteen years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Oakland Church of the Nazarene.

Don loved his church and was a very active volunteer. He had a wonderful sense of humor and uncanny wit. Don loved his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Glenn "Rick" Eastep
Born on Dec. 28, 1962
Died Jan. 31, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Glenn “Rick” Eastep, 41, of 1033 G Avenue N.W., Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, January 31, 2004, in his home, following a sudden illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids by Deacon Gerald Pettit. Burial: Downing Cemetery, Downing, Missouri. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Survivors include a brother, Carl Olivas & fiancee Sherri Newman of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Therese Cushing and husband Duane of Rockford, Illinois; nieces and nephews, Heather and Ryan Cushing, Nicholas Olivas and Cassi Holsinger; his brothers by adoption, Ken (Jenny) Thorton of Mohave Valley, Arizona, and Bill (Teri) Thorton of California; his sister by adoption, Joy (Jim) Lorthrop of Cypress, California; his loving friends, George (Maria) Hewitt and family, Jim Damish and Alexia Akin, all of Cedar Rapids; and his dog, Buster.

He was preceded in death by his adoption parents, Pauline and Glenn Eastep, Sr; and his birth mother, Norma Jean Thorton.

Born on December 28, 1962, he graduated from Davis County High School in Bloomfield, Iowa. During high school he participated in sports. He later graduated from Kirkwood Community College. He worked as a lot attendant for Plymouth-Chrysler, a salesman at Grovert Chevrolet in Newhall, was an insurance agent through Farmer’s Insurance, and later worked for Amana Refrigeration. Rick was a charter member of Abate of Iowa, a member of the Cedar Rapids Chapter of HOG, and Eastern Iowa Bonsai Club, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Annetta Henrietta Geistkemper
Born in Dyersville, IA on Oct. 10, 1920
Died Feb. 2, 2004 and resided in Earlville, IA.
Cemetery: St. Joseph's Cemetery

Annetta H. Geistkemper, 83, of Earlville, Iowa died Monday afternoon, February 2, 2004 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester after a long illness.

Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 5 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville with the Reverends Herbert Tegeler and Michael Tauke co-concelebrating. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and after 9:00 a.m. Thursday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and vigil service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Earlville.

Annetta was born icon on October 10, 1920, in Dyersville, the daughter of Aloysius L. and Anna M. (Klostermann) Tauke.

On September 8, 1941, Annetta was united in marriage to Herman J. Geistkemper at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville. The couple farmed north of Earlville, and in 1980 they retired and moved into town. Annetta and Herman shared 62 years of marriage together.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville where she was a member of the Guild. Annetta enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Annetta is survived by her husband, Herman Geistkemper of Earlville; eight children and their spouses, John (Carla) Geistkemper of Earlville, Dave (Judy) Geistkemper of Dyersville, Carol (Don) Grawe of Hazel Green , WI, Marilyn (Lyle) Andersen of Springville, Betty (Steve) Gassmann of Indianola, Jean (Jim) Woolf of Phillips, WI, Joe (Barb) Geistkemper of Earlville and Tom Geistkemper of Blairstown; eighteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister, Herb Tauke and Ileen Hoeger, both of Dyersville.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Marie Tauke, Luetta Burkle and Inez & Irma Tauke in infancy; three brothers, Arnold, Ambrose & Leonard Tauke; and two grandchildren, Christine & Timothy Geistkemper.

Kathleen A. Allie
Born in Boone, Iowa on Jul. 8, 1945
Died Feb. 4, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Kathleen A. Allie, 58, of 3115 Sue Ln. NW, Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, February 4, 2004, in her home, following a long illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2004, at St. Jude Catholic Church, by Father Richard Ament and Father Mark Osterhaus. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a vigil wake service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment: Linwood Mausoleum.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, Tom; her mother, Marge Havens of Boone; her children, Mary (Gus) Ronnenberg, Teresa Allie, Susan Moershel, Janet Allie all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Amanda, Megan, Andrew and Mark Ronnenberg, and Holly Moershel.

She was preceded in death by her father; and two brothers, Kenneth and James.

Kathleen was born icon July 8, 1945, the daughter of Kenneth and Marge (Bemis) Havens, in Boone, Iowa. On October 26, 1963, she was united in marriage to Thomas Allie in Boone. Kathy enjoyed learning. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Boone, and Boone Junior College and attended ISU. Kathy graduated from the University of Iowa, Mt. Mercy College (twice), DMACC and the Loyola University in New Orleans, where she received her Masters Degree. She taught school at St. Jude’s and then left to start Buttons N Bows Child Care Centers which she operated until her death. Kathy was a counseler at ASAC and built and operated Pineview Residential Care Centers. She then became a realtor and worked for Marian Arens & Associates for several years. Kathy started her own firm Pineview Properties which she also operated until her death. She enjoyed her family, casinos, the ocean and mountains.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of Kathy.

Peter Owen Stamats
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Jul. 20, 1929
Died Dec. 15, 2003 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.
Memorial Services: Saturday Dec. 20, 2003

Peter Owen Stamats, died December 15, 2003, at a little past 7:00 p.m. after a courageous battle with cancer at age 74, in his home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Memorial Services: 12:30 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2003, at Christ Episcopal Church at 220 40th Street N.E. in Cedar Rapids by the Father William Pugliese. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.

Peter was born icon on July 20, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, his home for most of his life. Peter attended Johnson Elementary School and Franklin High School. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1951 and then served three years in the United States Air Force before moving to Washington DC, where he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for three years.

Peter was married icon to and subsequently divorced from Bette-Barron Smith. They had two sons, Peter Spencer Stamats (1958) and William Smith Stamats (1960). He married icon Susan Portz on June 10, 1988, in Galena, Illinois.

Peter O. Stamats worked for Stamats Publishing Company, now Stamats Communications, Inc., for over thirty-eight years, retiring as President of the company in December 1996. He was Chairman of the Board of the company at the time of his death.

Throughout his life, Peter held many positions, including: Board of Directors at Guaranty Bank and Trust Company, Trustee of Mount Mercy College, President and Trustee of the Brucemore Historic Site, board member of Iowa State Arts Council, the Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission, and the Linn County Mental Health Association, member of the executive committee for the Friends of Baker Library at Dartmouth College, and was a lifelong member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club.

As a lifelong patron of the arts, Peter O. Stamats contributed greatly to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art for over forty-five years. He served as a Director and President of the Cedar Rapids Art Association and then as a Trustee and President of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. He was instrumental in soliciting funding for the construction of the current museum at its location on Third Avenue S.E., and contributed both funds and art works to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and the University of Iowa Museum of Art.

Peter and his wife, Susan, ran Buzzard’s Glory Balloon Company and could often be seen many evenings flying their balloons over the city of Cedar Rapids. In addition, they flew competitively in many regional and national hot air ballooning competitions. He was a life member of the Balloon Federation of America, a member of the North American Hot Air Balloon Association, and was the founding President and Director of the National Balloon Museum in Indianola, Iowa. Peter and Susan were dealers for Cameron Balloons from 1976 to 2002, and later for Lindstrand Balloons.

He is survived by his wife and partner of twenty-five years, Susan Portz Stamats; his son, Peter Spencer Stamats and wife Karen Lynn Allen and their children, Spencer, Veronica and Abigail of San Fransisco, California; his son, William Smith Stamats and wife Anne Purdie Stamats and their children, Benjamin and Haley of Cedar Rapids; his sister, Sally Hedges of Cedar Rapids; his in-laws, Edward and Carmelita Portz of Andrew, Iowa; several brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

In lieu of flowers, it was Peter’s wish that donations be made to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art in his memory.

James Gables
Born in Anniston, Alabama on Sep. 2, 1958
Died Apr. 30, 2006 and resided in Marion, IA.
Cemetery: Fuller Cemetery

James Gables, 47, 0f 1500 Cherokee Dr., died Sunday, April 30, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital, from complications of COPD. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 6, 2006, at Cornerstone Funeral Chapel in Ider, Alabama. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2006, at the funeral home in Ider. Burial: Fuller Cemetery, Ider, Alabama. Local services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.

Survivors include his companion, Donna Baze; three children, Kelly Loham of Jefferson, Texas, William Gables of Novi, Michigan and Jamie Gables of Novi, Michigan; twelve brothers and sisters, Robert Gables, Edna Laney, Edward Gables, Nellie Mae Barker, Elizabeth Wilson, Sherrie Manning, Glen Gables, Wanda Slater, Gussie Gables, Edna Simms, Darlene Bell and Annie Wyatt; six half brothers and sisters; and two granddaughters, Dominique and Hailey Loham.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

James was born icon September 2, 1958, the son of Jimmie and Nellie (Wilson) Gables in Anniston, Alabama. He worked as an elephant trainer and later became a chef.

A memorial fund has been established in memory of James.

Deborah Ann Woodward
Born in Dubuque, IA on Jun. 1, 1952
Died Apr. 29, 2006 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Deborah Woodward, 53, of 2387 Rompot Street S.E., Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, in her home following a long illness. Memorial Service: 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Believers in Grace Church, Marion, by the Rev. Bill Randles. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her husband, Chuck; her father, Carl (Alice) Wallig; her mother, Kay (Ray) Herbsleb; her daughters, Shannon (Jeremy) Bresley and Kimberly Rhea; eight grandchildren; and two brothers, Jim Wallig and Bill Wallig.

She was preceded in death by a son, Geoffrey Allan.

Deborah was born icon June 1, 1952, in Dubuque, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Kay Wallig. On August 12, 1982, she was united in marriage to Chuck Woodward in Cedar Rapids.

Walter A. Bohren
Born in Coggon, Iowa on Oct. 3, 1914
Died Aug. 13, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Walter A. Bohren, 89, a resident of Living Center West in Cedar Rapids, formerly of Central City, died Friday, August 13, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 16, 2004, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ryan by Rev. Roger McKinstry. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City. Burial: Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.

Survivors include his children, Pat Frasher and husband Harold of Center Point, Judy Loughren and husband Tom of Prairieburg and Jerry Bohren and wife Joyce of Prairieburg; a brother, Leo of Coggon; a sister, Emily of Florida; four grandchildren, Susie Loughren, Lisa Seaton, Jackie Ayers and Aimee Frasher; and two great-grandchildren, T.J. and Maycie Ayers.

Walter was born icon October 3, 1914, the son of Fred and Rosina Bohren in Coggon. On May 25, 1947, he married icon LaVina Kula in Prairieburg. She died November 8, 1999.

Mildred M. Bailey
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Jul. 17, 1918
Died Aug. 13, 2004 and resided in Hiawatha, IA.

Mildred M. (Fitzgarrald) Bailey, 86, a resident of Hiawatha Care Center, formerly of Central City, died Friday, August 13, 2004, at the care center, following a long illness. Services: 11 a.m.Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City by Rev. Del Bear. Friends may call from 4-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Gloria McCluskey of Pensacola, Florida and Mrs. Elsie Cummings of Pensacola, Florida; seventeen nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over fifty years, Orval Lee Bailey; her son, Orval Feres Bailey; two brothers, George and Benjamin Fitzgarrald; two sisters, Helen Stevens and Wilma Lewis; and a nephew, Keith Fitzgarrald.

Mildred was born icon July 17, 1918, the daughter of George and Helen (Feres) Fitzgarrald in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from McKinley High School in 1937. On September 9, 1938, she married icon Orval Lee Bailey in Cedar Rapids. They farmed together in the Central City area for many years. Orval died in 1992.
