Arnold Leo Mensen
Born in Petersburg, Iowa on Jun. 30, 1922
Died Aug. 2, 2004 and resided in Earlville, IA.

Arnold L. Mensen, 82, of Earlville, Iowa passed away Monday afternoon, August 2, 2004 at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 5 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Friends may call from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville with a Rosary at 2:00 and Scripture Service at 8:00. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.

Arnold was born icon on June 30, 1922 in Petersburg, the son of Frank and Henrietta (Kramer) Mensen. He attended country school in Petersburg and helped on the family farm. Arnold entered the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as an electrician aboard the destroyer, U.S.S. Flusser, of the 5th & 7th Fleet in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On November 26, 1946 Arnold was united in marriage to Charlotte A. Funke at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Greeley. The couple farmed northeast of Petersburg before purchasing their farm southwest of Petersburg. In 1977, the couple retired and moved to Earlville.

Arnold was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earlville. He was a lifelong member of the Earlville Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post #436 and the New Vienna V.F.W. Post #7736. Arnold enjoyed playing the card game Solo and spending time with his family. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband who especially loved time spent with his grand and great-grandchildren.

Arnold is survived by his wife, Charlotte Mensen of Earlville, five children, Bob (Georgina) Mensen of New Vienna, Rosie (Jerry) Moorman of Manchester, Dave (Karen) Mensen of Delhi, Brenda (Phil) Luensmann of Salida, CO, Mark (Cindy) Mensen of Earlville; seventeen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leo (Dorothy) Mensen of Earlville and Laverne (Janice) Mensen of Petersburg; and a sister-in-law, Irene Mensen of Manchester.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Henrietta Mensen; two brothers, Edmund & Ambrose Mensen; a son-in-law, Jim Philipp; and one granddaughter, Annette Mensen.

Rita M. Luster
Born in Gays Mills, WI. on May 11, 1942
Died Aug. 1, 2004 and resided in Hiawatha, IA.

Rita M. Luster, 62, of 1364 Rainbow Boulevard, Hiawatha, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 12 Noon, Thursday, August 5, 2004, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church, Hiawatha, by the Rev. Neil Manternach. Graveside Services: 4:30 p.m. Thursday, at St. Ann’s-St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Harpers Ferry. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. by Knights of Columbus Council No. 5390, with a parish vigil to follow.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, sisters, Reggie Johnson, Eileen (Bill) Pickrum and Joyce (John) Luster; brothers, Bud McFarland, Don McFarland and John (Margaret) McFarland; sisters-in-law Virginia Luster, Mary (Neil) Kane, Myrtle Spinner, Madonna (James) Rouiller, Helen Rissman and Charlotte (Glenn) Monroe; and brothers-in-law, Harland (Connie) Luster, Ernie (Alice) Luster and Clarence (Kay) Luster.

Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Bill and Leo McFarland and brothers-in-law, James Luster, Don Spinner, Don Rissman and Warren Johnson.

Rita was born icon the daughter of Donald and Mary Ellen (Craig) McFarland on May 11, 1942 in Gays Mills, Wisconsin. On May 21, 1966, in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Harpers Ferry, she was united in marriage to Charles Luster. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church.

Rita was a loving wife and loved her family dearly.

A memorial fund has been established in Rita'’s memory.

Richard Freeman Tullis
Born in Ottumwa, Iowa on May 15, 1927
Died Jul. 31, 2004 and resided in Marion, IA.

Richard “Dick” Freeman Tullis, 77, of 1680 A Avenue, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at his home, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Del Bear with military rites. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Graveside Committal: 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Kilbourne Cemetery in Kilbourne, Iowa.

Survivors include his son, Mike Tullis and wife Rhonda of Marion; his daughter, Pat Carleton and husband Brent of Savage, Minnesota; a brother, Max Tullis and wife Donna of Columbus, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Beverly Tullis of Ottumwa; three grandchildren, Brandon Carleton, Carolyn Trimble and Michael J. Tullis; and two great granddaughters, Cassie Tullis and Summer Marie Carleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; and a brother, Robert D. Tullis.

Dick was born icon May 15, 1927, the son of Irving D. and Lettie M. (McGuire) Tullis in Ottumwa. In 1943 he graduated from Ottumwa High School. Dick served with the U.S. Navy as a Gunner’s Mate during WWII. He married icon Norma Lyons in Ottumwa and resided there for twenty years before moving to Marion in 1971. Norma died in 1983. Dick worked for Borden’s Ice Cream as a regional supervisor for thirty-five years and for Hy-Vee as a back room manager for ten years, retiring in 1991. Dick loved walking at Lindale Mall where he had many good friends.

Dick was a member of Low 12 Club in Ottumwa, VFW Post No. 788 of Cedar Rapids, American Legion Post No. 298 of Marion, Grace Baptist Church of Marion and was a Mason.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the El Kahir Shrine Hospital Fund, 1400 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, IA, 52402, in Dick'’s memory.

Regina Ann Mahnke
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Dec. 16, 1942
Died Jul. 28, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Regina "Jean" Ann Mahnke

Regina “Jean” Ann Mahnke, 61, of 3333 Pioneer Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, passed away July 28, 2004, in her sleep after a short illness. Services: 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at Word of Faith, 2325 16th Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include her husband, John; two daughters, Regina Marie Hoppenworth and husband Jay and Rebecca Eileen Brawner, three sons, John Arthur Mahnke, James Patrick Mahnke and wife CeCe, and Joseph Lee Mahnke, all of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother Jerry Robertson; and a sister Iola Jones, both of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; one sister; and one grandchild.

Regina was born icon December 16, 1942, the daughter of Arthur and Estell (Dudie) Robertson, in Cedar Rapids. On January 15, 1961, she married icon John Earl Mahnke in Marion. Regina was a grandma to any child she met and was loved by all.

A memorial fund has been established in Regina’'s memory.

Margaret L. Hill
Born in Coggon, Iowa on Jul. 23, 1914
Died Jun. 3, 2004 and resided in Alburnett, IA.

Margaret Henderson Hill, 89, of Alburnett, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at her home, following a short illness. Memorial Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Dan Peterson. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. As per Margaret's wishes, her body has been cremated. Private inurnment at Coggon Cemetery.

She is survived by a daughter, Janis (Frank) Ramsey of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sons, James of Alburnett and Duane of Cedar Rapids; a granddaughter, Teri (Dan) Miller of Lockport, Illinois; two grandsons, Scott (Doloras) Hill of Lockport, Illinois and Brian Ohrt of Irving, Texas; a great-grandson, Jake Hill of Lockport, Illinois; two brothers, Bob (Darlene) Henderson of Coggon and Jim (Marge) Henderson of Toddville; sisters-in-law, Nadine Swanson of Coggon and Shirley (Chuck) Hollan of Cedar Rapids; brother-in-law, Henry Wagner of Cedar Rapids; several nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Mary Hill of Iowa City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother, Ralph Arthur; her husband, Harold; and a son John A.

Margaret was born icon the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Drexler) Henderson on July 23, 1914, at Grandview Farm, Coggon. She graduated from Coggon High School in 1932 and from Cedar Rapids Business College in 1935. On March 20, 1938, she married icon Harold R. Hill at First Presbyterian Church in Waterloo. He died October 4, 1970. She worked at Younkers, Dows Maniti Dairy and Sears, retiring from Telephone Sales at Sears in 1982. She was a member of the Alburnett Methodist Church, Marion Chapter of the Eastern Star, Alburnett Senior Citizens, Charter member of Alburnett Historical Society and the Breakfast Bunch. Her interests include roses, perennial flowers, family genealogy, history of Alburnett, sewing and embroidery.

Margaret was a good neighbor, loyal friend and devoted parent. She will be greatly missed by all who shared her life.

The family kindly suggests that no flowers be sent. Instead, a memorial fund has been established in Margaret’s memory.

Evelyn M. Day
Born in Dysart, Iowa on Mar. 6, 1916
Died Mar. 6, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Evelyn M. Day, 87, of ManorCare Health Services, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, in the care center, with dementia. Services: 11:30 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev.Dave Higdon. Friends may call from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including her niece, Juanita Norman and husband Harry who lovingly cared for Evelyn and went to the care center and fed her nearly daily the last 5 ˝ years without fail since October 20, 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; three brothers, William, Clifford and Robert; and a sister, Helen.

Evelyn was born icon March 6, 1916, the daughter of Robert and Dora (Carpenter) Olmstead, in Dysart, Iowa. On August 19, 1934, she married icon Ralph Day in the beautiful Ellis Park Rose Garden in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He died January 20, 1999. Evelyn and Ralph lived in California over 50 years before coming back to Cedar Rapids, where they would have someone to look after them as they had no children.

We want to thank all the wonderful people who cared for her at ManorCare.

Instead of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice or to Cedar Valley Humane Society in memory of Evelyn.

Thomas L. Shaffer
Born in rural West Union, IA on Jul. 3, 1910
Died Mar. 2, 2004 and resided in Fairfax, IA.

Thomas L. Shaffer, 93, of Fairfax, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, in his home, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 5, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom Carver. Friends may call from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marcella; his children, Gordon Shaffer of Springfield, Virginia, Dan Shaffer and wife Jan of Ely, Iowa, and Randy Shaffer and wife Marilyn of Mount Vernon, Iowa; his grandchildren, Andrew, Nicolas and wife April, Erin, Casie, Tony and Star; and two granddogs, Kashi and Indy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and J.D.; a sister, Lafonda Peters; and a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Tucker Shaffer.

Thomas was born icon July 3, 1910, the son of Israel and Elizabeth (Richards) Shaffer, on the family farm near West Union, Iowa. On October 12, 1947, he was united in marriage to Marcella Wood on the family farm. For 30 years, Thomas worked for Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids. A resident of Fairfax for 35 years, he was a member of the Shueyville United Methodist Church. Thomas “Lefty” enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes and buying lottery tickets.

Memorials may be made to the Shueyville United Methodist Church in memory of Thomas.

Ada M. Gretten
Born in Des Moines, IA on Oct. 27, 1921
Died Feb. 29, 2004 and resided in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Ada M. Gretten, 82, of 1902 Williams Blvd. SW, Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, February 29, 2004, in her home of cancer. Services: 10:00 Friday, March 5, 2004, at Immanuel Baptist Church, by Rev. Mark Crotinger, Rev. Ed Gregory and Rev. Dr. O. Wyndell Jones. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Linwood Cemetery.

Survivors include her son, William Gretten of Blue Grass, Iowa; and three brothers, Philip Adcock of Orange, California, Roy Adcock and Bob Adcock, both of Riverside, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, L. W. “Tad”; and four brothers, John, Paul, Bill, and Donald.

Ada was born icon October 27, 1921, the daughter of Clem and Alma (Moon) Adcock, in Des Moines, Iowa. On February 23, 1941, she was united in marriage to L. W. “Tad” Gretten in Chariton, Iowa. He died March 8, 1992. Ada was branch manager for Lamson Brothers Brokerage Office and later worked for Merchants Bank, retiring in 1985. A longtime resident of Cedar Rapids, she was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church.

Throughout her life she was a caregiver for family and friends who were ill and in need. She was a Sunday School teacher for 42 years and spent many years ministering to others in nursing homes and sharing her faith with everyone she met. Ada gave of herself to others, not for personal gain or glory, but as God’s faithful servant. Her life was a sermon to others, of faith, compassion, love and courage. Ada taught us how to live and she taught us how to die. She will be missed by her family and her many friends.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy or Immanuel Baptist Church in memory of Ada.
