Ralph Clark

Ralph Edwin Clark, 84, of Montrose, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at his home. Arrangements are pending at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk.

Tony Courtois

Tony E. Courtois, 86, of Ursa, Ill., died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Harry Truman Memorial VA Hospital in Columbia, Mo.

Born Dec. 17, 1914, in Hancock County, Ill., he was the son of George and Cora Lake Courtois. On July 10, 1947, he married Celia Rupp in Elvaston, Ill.
Mr. Courtois worked for Local 965 Operating Engineer Union as a machinery operator for 35 years before retiring in 1979.

He lived east of Lima, Ill., for 32 1/2 years before moving to Ursa. He was a member of Lima Lodge 135 AF & AM, the Quincy Consistory and a lifetime member of Local 965 Operating Engineer Union. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, serving in the 74th field artillery. He also enjoyed playing the fiddle and judged many fiddle contests.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Tony Courtois, Gailand Courtois, Gregory Courtois and Loren Courtois, all of Quincy, Ill., and Terry Courtois of Milwaukee, Wis.; two grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Albert Courtois of Coatsburg, Ill., and Kenneth Dale Courtois of Marcelline, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Private graveside services were held.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Children's Hospital.

William Piper

William Conor Piper, 5, of Keokuk, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born June 6, 1996, in Keokuk, he was the son of Scott and Catherine (Kaki) Logan Piper.
Conor recently graduated from Hoerner YMCA Preschool. He loved playing make-believe with his toy animals, especially his lions, tigers and cheetahs. He enjoyed golf, swimming and snorkeling, and riding his electric motorcycle. He had a great imagination and liked to build and fix things, do art projects, play with friends and cousins, sing and read books.

Survivors include his parents; siblings Logan, McKenzie and Chase Piper; his grandparents, William and Joan Logan of Keokuk and Donald and Yvonne Piper of Williamsburg, Va.; aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one sister and his great-grandparents.

Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk.

The funeral for William Conor Piper will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Paul Pennington officiating. A private burial will be at a later date.

A memorial has been established for the Chase and Conor Piper Memorial Foundation.

Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.

William Scully

William Leo Scully, 77, of Burlington, died at 6:45 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at his home.

Born Sept. 8, 1923, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of William Thom-as and Cecilia Eleanor Cornick Scully. On Feb. 2, 1946, he married Ethel Irene Horn in Younk-ers, N.Y.
Mr. Scully was a tool and die maker for CB&Q Railroad and worked in civil service as a government inspector for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and Rock Island Arsenal. He later became owner and operator of Joe's Inn in Burlington.

He was a member of Sts. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Eagles. He was an avid golfer, carding a hole in one at Sheaffer Golf Course, hunter, bowler and enjoyed spending time with his family. In 1994, he was elected to the Burlington Bowling Hall of Fame. In 1995, he received recognition for 25 consecutive appearances at the ABC Bowling Tournament.

He was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific aboard the USS Frank as a 1st Class machinist.

Survivors include his ex-wife of Burlington; two daughters, Kath-leen Nelson of Fort Madison and Mary Parsons of Burlington; one son, William (Jim) Scully of Burlington; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Virginia Peek and Therese Groethe, both of California, and Rosemary Elliott of Washington, Iowa; three brothers, Theodore Scully of Des Moines, Daniel Scully of Nebraska and John Scully of Oakville; special friend Jenny Long of Burlington; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will begin after 8 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m.

The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Scully will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gerald Stouvenel officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Sophronia Campbell

Sophronia Ethel Campbell, 92, of Wapello died Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005, at Heartland Health Care in Henry, Ill.

Born May 24, 1912, in Manville, Ill., she was the daughter of Charles and Emma Anderson Wonders. On Dec. 4, 1931, she married Kermit Owens Campbell in Monmouth, Ill. He died May 30, 1989.

Mrs. Campbell worked as a medical assistant for the Weber Clinic in Wapello for many years.

She was a graduate of Oakville High School. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge and the American Medical Assistant Association. She enjoyed bowling with the Wapello Women's League on the Tri–State Envelope Team until the age of 89. She also enjoyed a variety of crafts, especially sewing. She was a longtime resident of Wapello.

Survivors include one son, Darrel Campbell of Burlington; one daughter, Clara Ault of Tiskilwa, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 13 great–grandchildren; and two great–great–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, one son, two granddaughters and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

The funeral for Mrs. Campbell will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dudgeon–McCulley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harlan W. Winter officiating. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery . A gathering following the graveside committal will be at the United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Wapello.

Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church and Wapello Volunteer Fire Department.

John Fenton

John (Bill) Fenton, 91, of Mount Pleasant died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.

Born Jan. 29, 1914, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of William Joseph and Mabel Ruth Young Fenton. On Oct. 28, 1939, he married Juanita July. She died in July 1980. On April 17, 1982, he married Verda Trabert Peterson.

Mr. Fenton worked in production at General Electric in Burlington for many years and was a shoe salesman until retiring.

He was a 1934 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge No. 8. He was a Navy veteran, serving as a corpsman. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; one son, John "Jack" Fenton of Apple Valley, Minn.; one stepson, Gary Peterson of Blue Grass; one stepdaughter, Diane Caldwell of Mount Pleasant; seven grandchildren; and 12 great–grandchildren.

Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, with a 6 p.m. Masonic service conducted by Lodge No. 8 and the family receiving friends to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Fenton will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edward Peterson officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Robert Collins

Robert Collins, 58, of Lomax, Ill., died at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital in Galesburg, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Banks and Beals Funeral Home in Dallas City, Ill.

Willa Rooney

Willa L. Rooney, 80, of Keokuk, died at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born April 12, 1924, in Revere, Mo., she was the daughter of Eugene and Verna Dorothy White. On Aug. 31, 1947, she married John W. Rooney Jr. in Palmyra, Mo. He died April 1, 2003.

Mrs. Rooney worked at the Huiskamp Shoe Factory and at Sheaffer Pen in Fort Madison. She was co–owner of a grocery store and gas station. Later in life she worked for Clark Nursing Home.

She lived in Keokuk since 1947. She loved to quilt and fish, enjoyed traveling and doing word–find puzzles.

Survivors include one daughter, Penny Martin of Keokuk; three grandchildren; one brother, Don White of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

The graveside service for Mrs. Rooney will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Keokuk National Cemetery , with the Rev. Brian Rihner officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Keokuk Little League.

John Walsh

John F. "Jack" Walsh, 80, of Burlington, died at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Jan. 24, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Harry A. and Rose DeRosier Walsh. He married Dora Ann Tubbs on April 6, 1942, in Burlington.
Mr. Walsh was a Navy veteran, serving as a seaman 2nd class and a Navy pilot prior to World War II. He was a sergeant and acting captain for the Burlington Police Department for 20 years, retiring in 1961.

He was a member of Sts. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, David Walsh of Blue Grass and Edward, Richard and Thomas Walsh, all of Burlington; two daughters, Nancy Henry of Burlington and Kathy Beckman of Hutchinson, Kan.; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Walsh will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Patrick Hilgendorf officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 at the chapel. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Mary Cecil Smith

The funeral service for Mrs. Mary Cecil Smith, 93, of Danville, who died August 20, 2001, will be held this morning at 11:00 a.m. at Elliott Chapel, New London. Rev. Consorcia Sanchez will officiate. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery , Mt. Pleasant. Memorials may be made to either Alzheimer's Treatment and Research or to the Danville Public Library.

Evelyn Augsburger

Evelyn L. Augsburger, 67, of Mount Pleasant, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at the Mapleleaf Health Care Center.

Born July 29, 1934, in Muscatine, she was the daughter of Oscar and Hilda Whitaker Kemper. On Nov. 27, 1954, she married Richard "Dick" Augsburger in Wapello.
She was a member of the Wapello High School marching band when the band received its first number one rating in the schools' history in state marching band contest. She graduated from Wapello High School in 1952 and the Burlington Beauty Academy in 1953.

Mrs. Augsburger owned and operated the Broadway Beauty Shop in West Burlington. She worked in the accounting department of the F & M Bank and National Research, and worked as a secretary for the Murray Ironworks. Later, she worked for the Naval Department of Sylvania, IRC in Burlington, and for Motorola in Mount Pleasant.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, and the James Harlan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her county genealogy memberships included a charter membership for Louisa County and a lifetime membership for Des Moines County and she was also a member of the Henry County Genealogy Society. She had been very active in the Sunnyside School PTA in Burlington and was a den mother in the Sunnyside Cub Scout Pack. She was a supporter of the Little League and enjoyed collecting antiques. Mrs. Augsburger especially enjoyed spending time with her family and assisting on school trips with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Scott Augsburger of Mount Pleasant; two grandchildren; one brother, Warren Kemper of Wapello; two nephews; and one niece.

Visitation will begin after noon Friday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Augsburger will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Edward Peterson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the genealogy section of the Mount Pleasant Public Library.
