Lynne Riddle

Lynne D. Riddle, 41, of Keokuk, died at 4:30 AM Monday, October 13, 2003 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.

She was born icon May 12, 1962, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Allie and Doris Holmes Scott, Jr. She married icon Gary Riddle on August 3, 1985 in Keokuk. He survives.

She was a hairstylist at Hair & Now Reflections for the past 20 years. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Keokuk Yacht Club and was vice president of the Keokuk Kids Wrestling Club and an avid wrestling fan. She was a fulltime, loving mother and gave full support to children’s’ sports. She was a loving aunt and had a special love for her great nieces. Once a year she enjoyed a motorcyle ride and loved a good time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Gary Riddle of Keokuk; three sons, Kyle, Dakota and Elija, all at home; three sisters, Kathy Scott of Keokuk, Joyce Ward and her husband, Dennis, of Keokuk and Peggy Scott of Kahoka, Missouri; mother-in-law, Nancy Riddle of Keokuk; father-in-law, Floyd Riddle of Keokuk; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents

Funeral services were held Thursday, October 16, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Reverend Bruce Blois and Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Memorials may be made for the education of her children.

Anthony L. Washburn

Anthony L. Washburn, 65, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at 1:20 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Anthony Washburn was born icon on January 31, 1937 in Keokuk. He was the son of Martin Leroy and Irene C. Lambert Washburn. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and was employed in construction. He received Honorable Discharges from both the United States Army and the Iowa National Guard. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time outdoors.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Flower and her husband, Robert, of Oak Park, Illinois and Debbie Worrell and her husband, Bill; eight sisters, Vivian Mahoney and her husband, Elmer of Keokuk, Sheila Kay and her husband, John, of Keokuk, Kathrine Boltz and her husband, Robert, of Keokuk, Dolores Wadden of Keokuk, Sharon Cockrell of Keokuk, Ilene Robertson of Keokuk, Lucille Solomon of Keokuk, and Shirley Dodge and her husband, Sonny, of Hamilton, Illinois; three brothers, Glenn Washburn and his wife, Jean, of Keokuk, Keith Washburn and his wife, Diane, of Keokuk, and Pat Washburn and his wife, Sandra, of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth Ginnaris; and three brothers, John Washburn, Carl Washburn, and one in infancy.

Services were Friday, January 31, 2003 at All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk with Reverend Christopher David officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church.

Dale W. Weber
June 21, 1926 - July 31, 2004

MONTROSE - Dale W. Weber, 78, of Montrose, formerly of Burlington, died at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, in his home.

He was born icon June 21, 1926, in Fort Madison, the son of Earl Lynn and Alice Watson Weber.

He married icon Vivian Alice Anton on Oct. 22, 1950, in Donnellson.

He was graduated from Fort Madison High School with the Class of 1944. That summer he entered the United States Army and after basic training was shipped overseas to the South Pacific Theater where he joined the 158th Infantry Regimental Combat Team in ground combat against the Japanese at Luzon Island, Philippines. For this action, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star. After the Japanese surrender, his unit was shipped to Utsunomiya, Japan, and based at a former Japanese Army camp. Their primary mission was collecting all firearms and ammunition left in possession of Japanese citizens. He subsequently served in units based in Yokahama and Tokyo. He shipped back to the United States in September 1946 and received his honorable discharge from the Army in November 1946.

In January 1947, he began course work in engineering at Iowa State College. In the fall of 1948, he took employment as an engineering aide with the Soil Conservation Service in Fairfield. He worked there for two and a half years, during which time he met and married icon his wife. He reentered Iowa State in June 1951 and graduated in December 1953 with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering.

After graduation, he moved to the Burlington area where he worked for Dane Morgan & Associates, Sherman Smith & Associates, and finished a 26-year career with Mason & Hanger-Silas Mason Company Inc. as a departmental engineer in charge of the civil engineering section of the plant engineering department. He was licensed to practice structural and civil engineering in Iowa and Missouri and held membership in the National Society of Professional Engineers, was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as a member of numerous state and local engineering organizations. He also was a member of the Keokuk American Legion Post 41.

While living in Burlington, he was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in West Burlington, where he sang in the choir and served on various committees and church council. In 1995, a few years after retirement, he moved to Montrose, where he joined the Montrose Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir, as well as performances with the St. Barnabas Choir. During retirement he and his wife traveled extensively both overseas and in the United States. He also enjoyed riding trains and riverboats. He had an avid interest in trains of all kinds and collected railroad books and memorabilia.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Stephen Weber, and his wife, Judy, of Cockeysville, Md.; a daughter, Kathleen Fleming, and her husband, Larry, of Greenfield, Ind.; two grandsons, Rodger and Andrew Weber; a brother, Albert Weber of Goleta, Calif.; a sister, Neoma Corey of Fort Meyers, Fla.; and 16 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hofbauer-Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson, with Dr. Jim Eads officiating.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Madison. Full military rites will be by the Keokuk American Legion Post 41.

Visitation is after noon Tuesday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice.

Clematis R. Strohmaier
Oct. 25, 1903 Oct. 6, 2004

Clematis R. Strohmaier, 100, of Keokuk, died at 8:44 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004, in Lexington Square, Keokuk.

She was born icon on Oct. 25, 1903, in Keokuk the daughter of Reinhold E. and Grace M. Dowell Strohmaier Sr.

She received her nursing diploma from the University of Iowa. She worked as a general duty nurse, private duty nurse, and supervisor at hospitals including the University of Iowa in Iowa City, University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., St. Joseph and Graham hospitals in Keokuk, and hospitals in Detroit, Mich., Oak Park, Ill., and Oakdale. She was a lifetime member of the Iowa Nurses Association.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include: a brother, John Strohmaier, of Shreveport, La.; several nieces and nephews including locally: Reinie Dobson of Keokuk, Terry Dobson of Kansas City, Mo., and Robert Strohmaier of Montrose.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Reinhold, and Woodrow; and two sisters, Colleen Dobson and Thelma Ward.

Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.

Burial will follow the service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at DeJongs Funeral Home in Keokuk, with the family meeting friends during that time.

Memorials may be made to ChristVision.

DeJongs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Sheila Roberts

Sheila Roberts, 67, of Keokuk, died Thursday evening, Oct. 7, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital.

Arrangements are pending at DeJongs Funeral Home in Keokuk.

Louise Dorsey Sale
March 7, 1925 Dec. 7, 2004

Louise Dorsey Sale, 79, of Keokuk, died at 1:59 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Lexington Square, Keokuk.

She was born icon on March 7, 1925 in Bernie, Mo., the daughter of Albert and Lila May Barnes Carr.

She married icon James Leroy Sale on Feb. 15, 1959, with the Rev. George Ramsey officiating the wedding ceremony. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 1992.

She had lived most of her life in the Iowa-Illinois area and had been employed in production at Sheller Globe in Keokuk for 34 1/2 years. She retired in 1984.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. She belonged to the M & M Circle and the Friendly Sunday School class.

She was a member of the Local 444 Retiree Club and the Retiree Craft Club. She was a member of the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered at the hospital. She was Volunteer of the Year in 2001 at KAH.

She loved her grandchildren, enjoyed helping others, and was an excellent baker.

Survivors include: two sons, Billy Dewayne Carr and his wife, Sharilyn, of Keokuk, and James E. Sale and his wife, Becky, of Keokuk; a daughter, Jean Nickel of Keokuk; a brother, A.W. "Bud" Carr of Camp Point, Ill.; three sisters, Goldie Greve of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Leranell Burke and her husband, Kenneth, also of Poplar Bluff, and Hazel Gatlin of Neelyville, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Bob Carr; five brothers; two sisters; and her stepfather.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at DeJongs Funeral Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. William Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.

Visitation is Friday at the funeral home, with the family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Keokuk or Lee County Hospice.

DeJongs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

James Robert McVeigh
June 10, 1922 –– Jan. 2, 2010

MONTROSE –– James Robert McVeigh, 87, of Montrose died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at his home.

He was born icon on June 10, 1922, in Hamilton, Ill., the son of Leo and Helen Greenslaugh McVeigh.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Davis on Aug. 31, 1941, in the Methodist Church parsonage at Montrose. She survives.

Additional survivors include: three daughters, Ardath Tweedy and her husband, Karl, of Keokuk, Elizabeth Barker and her husband, Mike, of Keokuk, and Lois Easton and her husband, Larry, of Kansas City, Kan.; two sons, Gregory McVeigh and his wife, Barbara, of Kahoka, Mo. and David McVeigh and his wife, Karen, of Montrose; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joann Rooney of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Junkins of Chino Valley, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Elice Stockwell, and a brother, Dick McVeigh.

Jim graduated from Montrose High School with the Class of 1941. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Medical Corps during World War II.

He began working for Santa Fe Railroad in 1941 in Fort Madison. In 1968, he took the position of material supervisor in the Argentine office for Santa Fe and relocated to Kansas City, Kan. He retired from Santa Fe in 1983. In 2004, he moved back to his childhood home in rural Keokuk.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose. While living in Kansas City, Jim was very active in his church there and volunteered in the soup kitchen and food pantry.

He served as a volunteer fireman for the Montrose Fire Department for 27 years. He enjoyed working in his garden, woodworking, square dancing and bowling. Jim and Mildred enjoyed traveling and spending their winters in Mission, Texas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vigen Memorial Home, Keokuk, with the Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating.

Burial with military rites will be in the Montrose Cemetery.

Visitation is after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose.

Frances H. Reno
May 23, 1931 June 16, 2003

KEOSAUQUA - Frances H. Reno, 72, of Keosauqua, died at 5:23 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2003, at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

She was born icon on May 23, 1931, near Pulaski, to Forrest D. and Ruth Widmer Hartzler. She married icon Max E. Reno on Sept. 26, 1948, at the Pulaski Mennonite Church. He survives.

Additional survivors include: three sons, Stephen and his wife, Joanna, of Ankeny, Marcus of St. Petersburg, Fla., and R. William of Phoenix, Ariz.; son-in-law, Stephen Shriver of Bonaparte; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Hazel Fry of Green Valley, Ariz., Ellen Lowe of Batavia, Ill., Christine Botts of Bloomfield and Gertrude Saylor of Mountain Pine, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Heidi Shriver; a brother, John Hartzler; and a sister, Florence Lowenberg.

She graduated from Pulaski High School in 1948.

Mrs. Reno worked with her husband in Reno Feed Service in Bonaparte and Reno Real Estate and Auction Service in Bonaparte, Keosauqua and Bloomfield and she served as her husbands secretary while he was a state senator from 1964-1968.

Mrs. Reno was a member of Bonaparte Baptist Church, Chapter AB, P.E.O., Bonaparte and the Thursday Bridge Club, Keosauqua.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Bonaparte Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Caston officiating.

Cremation will follow the service with burial at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bonaparte Cemetery.

Open visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua with family meeting friends from 3 to 4 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Bonaparte Baptist Church and the American Diabetes Association.
