Earnest F. Steele
Aug. 21, 1925 - March 21, 2004

Earnest F. Steele, 78, of Keokuk died Sunday, March 21, 2004, at his home.

He was born icon Aug. 21, 1925, in Keokuk, the son of Frank and Annette Daw Steele. On Sept. 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lila Patricia Snyder in San Francisco, Calif. She preceded him in death on Oct. 8, 1996.

Mr. Steele was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during World War II.

He graduated from Keokuk Community College in Keokuk. He had been employed at Hubingers in Keokuk for 18 years, the Iowa Army and Ammunitions Plant in Middletown for three years, and at Midwest Carbide in Keokuk for 20 years, retiring in 1988.

Mr. Steele was a member of the VFW Post #3507 in Keokuk and a former Eagle member.

He loved to bowl and fish. He was a fan of the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburg Steelers and enjoyed watching sports on T.V.

He is survived by: three daughters, Lynda J. Pugh of Reno, Nev., Patty L. Thrush and her husband Ron of Keokuk, and Dawn E. Coulter and her husband Dan of Quincy, Ill.; two sons, Randy C. Andrew and his wife Joan of San Diego, Calif., and Kevin R. Andrew and his companion Sheila Sapp of Keokuk; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Harriett Kelly and her husband Lloyd of Keokuk, and Crystal Luger of North St. Paul, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Steele; and four sisters, Helen Hummer, Dorothy Downs, Frances Taylor, and Peggy Hamlin.

Graveside services with military rites will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Keokuk National Cemetery with Pastor Mike Shea officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Scott Edward Bryant
July 17, 1967 - May 17, 2004

DONNELLSON - Scott Edward Bryant, 36, Donnellson, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in Fort Madison.

He was born icon July 17, 1967, in Keokuk, the son of Edward and Alice Young Bryant.

He married icon Micki Beaird on July 23, 1988, in Keokuk. She survives.

He was a graduate of Central Lee High School, Donnellson, with the Class of 1985. He had been employed as a CERT officer at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison for 17 years.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.

He was a member of the N.A. Hunting Club, the Green Acres Country Club and the AFSCME Union.

He was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt, especially bow hunting. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and riding Harley Davidsons.

He was a loving husband and father, and cherished the times he spent with his family.

He was proud to be able to coach his daughters softball team.

Additional survivors include: two daughters, Brooke Bryant and Bailie Bryant, both of the home; his parents of Montrose; his parents-in-law, Kenneth and Sally Beaird of Keokuk; a brother, Bradley Bryant and his wife, Denise, of Montrose; two sisters-in-law, Tammi Kircher and her husband, Ed, of Keokuk, and Terri Christenson and her husband, Mike, of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Doug Beaird and his wife, Mary, of Burlington; two nephews, Kole Bryant and Dilan Beaird; five nieces, Megan Kircher and Kali Kircher, Molly Christenson and Anna Christenson, and Hilary Beaird.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church of Keokuk, with the Rev. Bill Mitchell officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Paul Evangelical Cemetery, Donnellson.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. today at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with family meeting friends from 6 to 9 p.m.

A memorial has been established for his children's education fund.

Ruth Howell
Nov. 11, 1927 - June 2, 2004

Ruth Howell, 76, of Keokuk, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, in her home.

She was born icon Nov. 11, 1927, in Carthage, Ill., the daughter of Fred and Lula Gillenwater Belknap.

She married icon Kenneth H. Howell on Sept.12, 1953, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1992.

She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk, and the Low Vision Support Group in Keokuk.

She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flower gardens. She liked to quilt, embroider and crochet and square dancing.

Survivors include: three daughters, Judy Collins and her husband, Rick, of Fort Worth, Texas, Diana Zimmerman and her husband, Rick, of Peoria, Ill., and Pam Hartzell and her husband, Tom, of Carthage, Ill.; six grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; six sisters, Alletia Hale of Carthage, Erma Inman of Texas, Dorothy Bundy and her husband, Howard, and Rosa Hoing, all of Rock Island, Ill., Evelyn Brown and her husband, Ronald, of Moline, Ill., and Betty Castelli of Chicago; three brothers, Franklin Belknap and his wife, Joan, and Willis Belknap and his wife, Margaret, all of Carthage, and Jessie Belknap of Rock Island.

She also was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tracy Ann Henson; five sisters; and two brothers.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the Rev. Jack Spratte officiating.

Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family meeting with friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Garden Club or City of Christmas.

John E. Finton
Jan 16, 1956 - June 6, 2004

CODEN (ALABAMA PORT), ALA. - John E. Finton, 48, of Coden (Alabama Port), Ala., died at home Sunday, June 6, 2004.

He was born icon Jan. 16, 1956, in Keokuk, the son of Robert E. and Mary Jane Coffman Finton. He lived in the Carthage, Ill., area for most of his youth. He moved to Des Moines for many years and then to Alabama in 1992. He worked for AL-FLA Plastics in Mobile, Ala., since 1992.

In addition to his wife, MaryAnn, he is survived by two daughters, Shannon Finton of Texas and Kelli Finton of Groton, Conn.; two stepdaughters, Alexandra Martinsen of Westminster, Md., and Keri McGinley of Colo, Iowa; and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and two sisters, Matt and Steve of Warsaw, Ill., Robert of Norfolk, Va., Tim of Quincy, Ill., Tom of LaMarada, California, Mary McIntosh of Homestead, Iowa, and Carrie Hutson of Texas.

Mr. Finton also leaves behind many of his friends in Alabama Port who were like family to him.

Services will be Saturday at Farrar Methodist Church in Farrar, Iowa.

Burial will be in the Farrar Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama Port Fire Department in Alabama Port.

Arrangements were by Radney Funeral Home in Mobile.

Sally A. Gelsthorpe
May 17, 1939 - June 8, 2004

FORT MADISON - Sally A. Gelsthorpe, 65, Fort Madison, died at 11:44 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Fort Madison Community Hospital.

She was born icon May 17, 1939, in Fort Madison, the daughter of Carl R. and Hazel Smalley.

She married icon James E. Gelsthorpe on Nov 28, 1957, in Denmark, Iowa. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1993.

She retired from the Gleason Corporation with 35 years of service.

She was a member of the Keokuk Assembly of God Church.

Survivors include: a son, Jerry M. (Kristi) Gelsthorpe of Fort Madison; a daughter, Mrs. Tony (Cynthia) Roberts of Fort Madison; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Carl R. Miller Jr. of Fort Madison, James M. "Mike" Miller of Vacaville, Calif., and Larry L. Miller of Napa, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Beverly) Lamon of Fort Madison, Mrs. Charles (Nancy) Corns of Waverly, Peggy M. Miller of Fort Madison, and Mrs. Marion (Judith) Stephenson of Fort Madison; and a number of nieces and nephew.

She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, with the Pastor Lane Perry officiating.

Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is after 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A memorial has been established.

Helen Grace Inman
Dec. 17, 1910 - June 9, 2004

DAVENPORT - Helen Grace Inman, 93, of Davenport, formerly a longtime resident of Hamilton, Ill., died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at Genesis West, Davenport.

She was born icon on Dec. 17, 1910, in Sutter, Ill., the daughter of Fredrick and Maud Launer Buckert.

She married icon Thomas H. Inman on Oct. 17, 1938, in Kahoka, Mo. He preceded her in death on July 19, 1976.

Survivors include: a daughter, Rosemary (and husband, Bill) Churchill of Davenport; a brother, Harold (and wife, Marilyn) Buckert of Carthage, Ill.; five grandchildren, Nichole Churchill of Phoenix, Ariz., Gretchen Churchill of Centreville, Va., Bret Churchill of New York, N.Y., Zachary Churchill of Chicago and Teri Inman of Tioga, Ill.; and four great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, William Terry Inman, on March 13, 1995; two sisters, Betty Eagerton and Evelyn Spencer; and four brothers, Russell, James and Robert Buckert, and a brother in infancy.

She graduated from Warsaw High School in 1930. She lived in Hamilton all of her married icon life and until May 1998, when she moved to Clarissa C. Cook Home in Davenport. She and her husband owned and operated Tommys in Hamilton until 1975.

Mrs. Inman was a member of The First Christian Church of Hamilton and active in Christian Women's Fellowship and Kings Daughters. She was a life-member of Carthage V.F.W. Post #5117 Auxiliary, Hamilton American Legion Auxiliary, Hancock County Home Extension and Hamilton Business and Professional Women. She volunteered as a 4-H leader, Girl Scout leader and at Hamilton Senior Citizens. She remained active with her many interests and hobbies which included music, dancing, sewing, reading, crafting, crocheting, ceramics, cards, dominos and traveling. While in Davenport, Helen enjoyed activities at CASI.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton with the Rev. Paul M. Smith officiating.

Burial is in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Taps will be played at the graveside in memory of her son, Terry, and her affiliation with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Family will meet with friends between 9 and 11 a.m. Saturday at Lamporte Funeral Home of Hamilton.

Robert Edward Hanley
Aug. 11, 1966 - May 1, 2004

LEAD HILL, Ark. - Robert Edward Hanley, 37, Lead Hill, Ark., formerly of Iowa, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Lead Hill.

He was born icon Aug. 11, 1966, in LaHarpe, Ill., the son of Ralph and Tempy (Genck) Bohnenkamp Hanley.

He had recently moved to Arkansas after many years as an Iowa resident. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, going places and visiting people.

Survivors include: his father of Davenport; his mother of Fort Madison; two sons, Robert Hanley Jr. and Charlie Hanley, both of Fort Madison; three sisters, Mary Cassaday of Clinton, Kathy Cain of Lead Hill, and Nicole Bohnenkamp of Keokuk; and a brother, Kevin Hanley of Fort Campbell, Ky.

Graveside services were held May 6 at the Milum Cemetery in Lead Hill, with the Rev. Kevin Rogers officiating.

Visitation was at Christeson Funeral Home.

Christeson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Robert 'Bob' Lee Lumberg
July 29, 1936 - June 13, 2004

BURLINGTON - Robert "Bob" Lee Lumberg, 67, of Burlington, died at 5:05 a.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, in his home.

He was born icon July 29, 1936, in Galland, the son of Clarence E. and Jennie Edith Kite Lumberg.

He married icon March 23, 1957, to Carla M. Smothers Lumberg. She survives.

He graduated from Burlington High School and attended Southeastern Community College.

He started employment with General Electric on May 8, 1961, and retired as an inspector in 1995.

He was a member of AARP, Moose, GE 25 Years Club, retired board member of the GE Retirees, Tama School Board member, and 22-year member of Drainage District #8 where he had also served as secretary. He enjoyed antique cars and trucks, reading and listening to the radio. His main enjoyment was being with his family and friends and his home.

He was of the Christian faith.

Additional survivors include: two daughters, Carlene M. Daley of Coralville, and Gail L. Gibson of Burlington; two sons, Scott A. Lumberg of Washington, and David A. Lumberg of Iowa City; three granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Joan Claftin of Coeur D. Alene, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, with the Rev. Beth Briggs officiating.

Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington.

Visitation is today, with family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial has been established with Great River Hospice.
