Lester Cooper

Lester Dean Cooper, 76, of Fort Madison died at 6:02 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born May 9, 1928, in Adair, Mo., he was the son of James and Nancy Norton Cooper. On Jan. 9, 1960, he married Mary Kathryn Moline in Kahoka, Mo.

Mr. Cooper worked at Crandon Paper Mill and then retired from the maintenance department of the former Amax Co.

He was a Korean War Army veteran, where he served as a heavy equipment operator. He was a former Eagles member and enjoyed camping and attending his grandchildren's ball games.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Diana Glasgow and Lisa Warner, both of Fort Madison; one son, Mike Hartman of Keokuk; six grandchildren; two great–grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Cooper of Kirksville, Mo.; and four sisters, Marie Wissler of Colorado, Dorothy Schreve of Crown Point, Ind., Betty Platz of Burlington and Katherine Haley of San Diego.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at King–Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Cooper will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at King–Lynk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Parlette officiating. Burial will be in Soldiers' Circle in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established.

Jeremy Barrett

Jeremy Michael Barrett, 24, of Pearl City, Hawaii, formerly of Winfield, died in a parachute accident Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, in Waialu, Hawaii.

Born June 3, 1980, in Mount Pleasant, he was the son of Todd and Linda Spence and Mark Barrett.

Mr. Barrett was a Petty Officer 2nd Class and hull technician assigned to Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One at Pearl Harbor.

He was a 1999 graduate of Winfield–Mount Union High School and was attending college while serving in the Navy. He enjoyed volunteering time with younger kids. He enjoyed motocross, skydiving, surfing, hiking, bodybuilding and playing the drums.

Survivors include his parents, Todd and Linda Spence of Winfield and Mark Barrett; grandparents, Mo and Ellen Spence and Don and Phyllis Weir, all of Mount Pleasant; one brother, Aaron Barrett of Winfield; one sister, Ashley Spence of Winfield; aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his great–grandparents.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Barrett will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Winfield, with the Rev. Greg Carr officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Winfield–Scott Township Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Big Brother/Big Sister program and Winfield Open Bible Church youth fund.

Robert McKim

Robert W. "Bob" McKim, 80, of Mount Pleasant, died at 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant. Arrangements are pending at Weir and Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mount Pleasant.

William Moon

William Harvey "Bill" Moon, 80, of Wapello, died after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease, Sunday evening, Dec. 5, 2004, at Wapello Nursing & Rehab Center.

Born Aug. 14, 1924, in Des Moines, he was the son of William H. and Clara Moon. On Dec. 19, 1947, he married Verta Marie Bloomer in Chicago.

Mr. Moon was pastor of Louisa Center Church in rural Louisa County for 25 years. After he resigned from the church, he taught English at Wapello High School for 20–plus years.

He graduated from high school in Des Moines, received his pastoral certificate from Moody Bible Institute, graduated from Wheaton College with a bachelor's degree, and at age 50 went on to complete his master's in English from Northern Illinois University. He enjoyed working with young people, and while at Louisa Center, he led a youth group called "Live Wires." He loved the outdoors. He enjoyed gardening. He was an active member of Grandview Community Bible Church and a member of Moody Alumni Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elizabeth Ann Gabet of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Mary Chavez of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Bill Moon of Woodland, Calif., and Daniel N. Moon of Aurora, Ill.; seven grandchildren; two great–granddaughters; and one sister, Barbara McCaulley of Walnut Creek, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, one half brother and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Louisa Center Church at the Louisa County Historical Society site in Wapello, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Moon will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grandview Community Bible Church in Grandview, with the Rev. Darryl Erickson officiating. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Grandview Community Bible Church and Moody Bible Institute of Chicago.

Loren Coppes

Loren J. Coppes, 57, of Keithsburg, Ill., died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City.

Born Nov. 10, 1947, in Burlington, he was the son of Leigh and Marjorie Martin Coppes. On April 25, 1970, he married Shirley Davis in Keithsburg.

Mr. Coppes worked for Champion Spark Plug in Burlington for 31 years, retiring in 2001.

He was a Vietnam War Army veteran. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, riding his motorcycle, cracking jokes and staying at home and being "Mr. Mom." Loren devoted his whole life to his wife and family. He was truly a very special, caring man and will be missed by anyone who ever knew him.

He was past member of the Keithsburg Volunteer Fire Department, member of Keithsburg Christian Church, Keithsburg Masonic Lodge AF & AM Robert Burns Chapter 113, where he served as past Master Mason.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Coppes of Keithsburg; one daughter, Dana and Bill Johnson of Cedar Rapids; two sons and daughter–in–law, Chris and Linda Hills of Grapevine, Texas, and Yancy Hills of Davenport; three grandchildren, Alexandra and Austin Hills and Hannah Johnson; his mother, Marjorie Coppes of Mediapolis; two sisters, Cathy and Jack Whitlow of Des Moines and Marla and Rick Seals of Bloomington, Ill.; one brother, Dave Coppes and special friend, Wanda Baker, of Yarmouth; two nephews; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Dennison Funeral Home in Aledo, Ill., with Masonic rites conducted at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Coppes will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church in Keithsburg. Burial with military rites conducted by Mercer County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1571 of Aledo will be in Greenmound Cemetery in Keithsburg.

A memorial has been established.

Roger King

Roger L. King, 21, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004, at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Born Aug. 30, 1983, in Phoenix, he was the son of James L. and Pamela S. Jackson King. On June 26, 2004, he married Teresa S. Cokel in Monmouth.

Mr. King was a U.S. Marine corporal stationed in Camp Lejeune.

He was raised in Monmouth. He attended Garfield School and graduated from Monmouth High School, where he played football and earned "Most Improved Player," ran track and was a state wrestler. He entered the Marine Corp on Nov. 11, 2002. When he graduated from basic training at Camp Pendleton, he was a squad leader with private first class ranking. He attended heavy equipment operators training in Fort Leonard Wood, after which he was stationed in Japan for a year. While there, he attended college. He was a member of First Christian Church in Monmouth. He enjoyed weightlifting.

Survivors include his wife of Monmouth; father of Monmouth; his mother of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, James L. King Jr. of Stronghurst, Ill., and Kris King, Daren King and Kyle King, all of Monmouth; three sisters, Amanda King of Lebanon, Tenn., and Kelly King and Linda King, both of Monmouth, and grandparents, Kenneth and Sue Jackson of Lebanon and Don Faris of Kansas City, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, maternal grandmother, step–grandmother and one aunt.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Monmouth.

The funeral service for Mr. King will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church, with the Rev. James Epperson officiating. Burial will be in West Fall Cemetery near Victoria, Ill.

A memorial has been established.

Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth is in charge of arrangements.

Francis Cain

Francis "Frank" M. Cain, 82, of Florida, died after an extended illness at 9:52 p.m. Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Crystal Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Phonotosassa, Fla.

Born Feb. 14, 1919, in Burlington, he was the son of Horace and Clara Cain.
Mr. Cain made his home in Burlington and operated Frank M. Cain Parade Attractions out of his home at 2301 West Ave. In 1977, he moved to Gibsonton, Fla., where he continued working in the circus industry for several years.

He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada with circuses as a clown and a parade costume designer. His handmade costumes and papier-machŽ heads, which numbered in the hundreds, were used in parades throughout the country. After his retirement, he wrote two books about the circus industry.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Barbara Cain of Burlington; one niece; one nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

His body has been cremated.

The graveside committal service for Mr. Cain will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Cemetery , with the Rev. Patrick J. Hilgendorf officiating.

Hass Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gloria Fowler

Gloria V. Fowler, 78, of Burlington, formerly of the Sawyer area, died at 10:12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Born Oct. 27, 1922, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Louis and Hilda Dornhafner Blind. She married Robert "Chuck" Fowler on Oct. 25, 1942, in Topeka, Kan. He died Dec. 26, 1991.
Mrs. Fowler was a 1940 graduate of Denmark High School and attended Burlington School of Business. She was co-owner of Fowler and Lafever Realtors and also worked at other real estate offices in Burlington. She retired in 1989.

She was of the Catholic faith and a member of Burlington Art Guild, Burlington Women's Club, Fort Madison Art Guild and Jazz Club. She was an award-winning artist and an avid reader. She loved animals and wildlife and was a member of Homeward Bound Animal Shelter.

Survivors include two daughters, Dixie Haugen of Owatonna, Minn., and Vicki Plank of West Des Moines; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Melvin and Curtis Blind, both of Wever.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Fowler will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery , Fort Madison, with the Rev. John Hyland officiating.

A memorial has been established for Homeward Bound Animal Shelter.

Margaret Miller

Margaret E. Miller, 80, of 729 Hazelhurst Circle, Keokuk, died at 8:05 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at River Hills in Keokuk. DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Mecum

Mary E. "Gram" Mecum, 88, of 919 Carroll St., Keokuk, died at 9:32 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at her home.

Born Jan. 19, 1913, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of John E. and Bessie O. Morris Ferris. She married Frank A. Mecum on April 18, 1934, in Missouri. He died June 8, 1983.
Mrs. Mecum was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and a graduate of Keokuk High School. She worked at Shellor-Globe for 24 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Pat Courtois of Keokuk and Karyl Tomberg of Itasca, Ill.; one son, Bob Mecum of Negley, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

The graveside service for Mrs. Mecum will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk, with the Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Friends and family will gather at the funeral home and proceed to the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.

Memorials have been established for Keokuk Humane Society, Lee County Hospice and First Christian Church.
