Betty Dooley

Betty Dooley, 73, of Willard, Missouri and formerly of Keokuk, died Sunday, October 13, 2002 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Missouri.

Betty Dooley was born icon on August 11, 1929 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Faye Nichols Batley. She married icon Donald Bruns. She later married icon Bill Dooley in 1975. He preceded her in death in 1996. She lived for many years in the Springfield, Missouri area. She loved sewing, quilting, and dining out. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Eudora Baptist Church in Willard, Missouri.

Survivors include a son, Keith Garcia, of Springfield, Missouri; two brothers, Larry Batley of Glassford, Illinois and Gary Michael Batley of Wayland, Missouri; three sisters, Geraldine Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa, Aera Ringhouse of Hamilton, Illinois and Linda Hagmeier of Keokuk, Iowa; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill Dooley; two sons; one daughter; two sisters; and two brothers.

Graveside services will be Saturday, October 19, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Inurnment will follow the service.

Maxine M. Earls

Maxine M. Earls, 82, of Keokuk, Iowa died Sunday, November 24, 2002 at 6:32 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa

Maxine Earls was born icon on December 9, 1919 in Nauvoo, Illinois. She was the daughter of W.F. and Myrtle Hummel Hamma. She married icon Gerald Earls on April 3, 1942 in Palmyra, Missouri. He preceded her in death on December 9, 1992. She and her husband, Gerald, owned and operated G.S. Earls Jewelry in Keokuk for forty years. She was a previous member of the Congregational Church of Keokuk and was a fifty-year member of Elmira Chapter #40, Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Earls of Keokuk; two grandchildren, Tony Haase & Cody Earls; two great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Earl Kendall of Carthage, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

There was an Eastern Star Memorial Service on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk. Burial will follow the service at the Nauvoo City Cemetery in Nauvoo, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners’ Childrens Hospitals.

Jack Eckland

Jack Edward Eckland, 64, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002 at 5:00 A.M. at his residence.

Jack Eckland was born icon on January 11, 1938 in Keokuk, the son of Edward and Ruby Lovell Eckland. He married icon Wanda Moore on November 14, 1957. He later married icon Brenda Buford on October 23, 1965 in Kahoka, Missouri. She survives. He was employed as a chemist and lab manager for Shellor Globe & Sears Manufacturing in the Iowa City-Davenport area for twenty years. He moved back in Keokuk in December 2001. He was a member of the First United Church in West Liberty, Iowa, was the past president of the West Liberty Rotary Club, and was past president of the West Liberty Jaycee’s.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Eckland, of Keokuk, Iowa; four children, Dean Eckland and wife, Kasey, of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Kip Standley of Dyersburg, Tennessee, Brian Eckland and wife, Sara, of Davenport, Iowa, and Lance Eckland and wife, Mishell of Iowa City, Iowa, ten grandchildren, Chad Eckland, Allyson Standley, Elizabeth Eckland, Megan Eckland, Hope Eckland, Paige Eckland, Jenna Eckland, Chase Eckland, Grace Eckland, and Brandon Eckland; two sisters, Barbara Prunty of San Diego, California and Betty Eckland of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were Friday, October 4, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Leon Buford officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Opal Egley

Opal Egley, 86, of Keokuk, died Monday, January 14, 2003 at 4:20 P.M. at the Keokuk Nursing Center in Keokuk, Iowa.

Opal Egley was born icon on June 4, 1916 in Keokuk. She was the daughter of Nelson and Luella Viola Coovert Cooper. She married icon James Fouts and he preceded her in death. She later married icon Glen Ruddell and she preceded him in death. She then married icon Henry Egley and he preceded her in death. She had lived in the Keokuk area for most of her life and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keokuk and the American Baptist Women Association. She was very active in church activities including the KYB Sunday School class and the Christian Womens Association. Her home was always open to anyone in need.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Francis Hoyt-Cale of River Bank, California, Ella May Maxwell of Keokuk, Iowa, and Ruth Ann Henke of Keokuk, Iowa; one son, Thomas J. Ruddell and his wife, Dee, of Nauvoo, Illinois; one brother, Robert M. Cooper and his wife, Margaret, of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Emma Cooper and Rossetta Amiss; nineteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one son, James Fouts; three brothers, Lloyd, Paul, and Charles Cooper; and one sister-in-law, Gladys Cooper.

Services were Friday, January 17, 2003 DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the American Baptist Womens Ministry c/o First Baptist Church in Keokuk.

Esther Ewing

Esther Violet Ewing, 90, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002 at 1:15 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Ester Ewing was born icon on June 21, 1912 in Macon, Missouri. She was the daughter of John W. and Viola Lewis Nelson. She married icon Hubert Lee Ewing on June 23, 1928 in Macon, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2000. She had lived in Keokuk since 1928 and was employed as a secretary at H.L. Boyce Insurance Company. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Keokuk, Elmira Chapter O.E.S. #40, and King's Daughters.

Survivors include one son, William Ewing and his wife, Doris, of Edmond, Oklahoma; four granddaughters, Debra Ewing, Susan Ewing-Louthan, Janet Ivey, and Rebecca Richardson; five great-grandchildren, George, IV and Jenny Ewing-Louthan, Janét Ivey, and Benjamin and Caleb Richardson; and one brother, John Nelson, of Redding, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one brother, Ephriam Nelson.

Graveside services were held Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Park with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Catherine J. Fellows

Catherine J. Fellows, 85 of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Keokuk, died Wednesday morning, October 23, 2002 at Genesis West Hospital in Davenport.

She was born icon November 19, 1916 in Keokuk the daughter of William and Gussie Wallace Laisle. On April 17, 1933, she married icon Ralph L. Fellows. He preceded her in death on November 2, 1993. She lived in Keokuk until moving to Davenport thirty years ago. She had worked in the office of Peterson Von Maur Department Store.

She is survived by two sons, Jack Fellows of Burlington, Iowa and Doug Fellows and his wife, Mary, of Davenport, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Betty Smiley; and one son, Richard Fellows.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 25, 2002, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Reverend John Varner officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Rev. Frederick Figge

Rev. Frederick Wm. Figge, 82, of Keokuk, also affectionately known as Father Fred or Padre by those who knew and loved him, died Friday, September 13, 2002 at 6:50 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Rev. Frederick William Figge was born icon on August 3, 1920 in Muskegon, Michigan, the son of Frederick E. and Margaret Ozinga Figge. He married icon Muriel Carpenter on August 22, 1942. She survives. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Albion College in Albion, Michigan. He then attended Bexley Seminary in Iowa City and graduated in 1945. His first parish was Salem Lutheran in Pemberville, Ohio where he served from 1945 to 1953. While there he also worked on his Masters Degree at Ohio State and received his degree in 1953. In 1954 he was ordained a Deacon in the Episcopal Church and in 1955, a Priest. From 1953 to 1956 he was a Chaplain and professor at DeVeaux School, Niagara Falls, as well as a Curate at St. Peter's Church. From 1956 to 1957 he served as a Curate in St. Paul's Church, Syracuse, New York. In 1957 he became Rector in St. Peter's, Westfield, New York. In 1960 he moved to Illinois serving as Vicar of St. Cyprians in Carthage, until 1963, as well as Rector of St. Paul's in Warsaw, from 1960 to 1968.

In 1963 he became a part-time teacher at Southeastern Community College, then in 1968 to 1983. While in Warsaw he was the Editor of 'LIGHT' monthly paper of the Diocese of Quincy. In 1968 he moved to Keokuk and served as intern in Burlington, Ft. Madison and Keokuk at various times as well as serving other denominations.

He was well known for his strong speaking voice, his singing, and for his sermons, which were always from the heart and mind, and never written down. He had the use of seven different languages. He loved his family and delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks, Lodge #106.

He is survived by his wife, Muriel; three sons, Frederick Figge and Brian A Figge of Keokuk and Kurt William Figge of Niota, Illinois; two special daughters-in-law, Linda Figge of Warsaw, Illinois and Becky Figge of Keokuk; five grandsons, Rod, Troy, Kris, Paul and Brad Figge; three granddaughters, Alycia, Brianne and Annmarie; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews in Michigan; and a special friend, Joan Newberry.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Don and Ernest Figge; and a daughter-in-law, Karen Sue Figge.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, 2002 at St. John's Episcopal Church with Rev. Bruce D. Blois officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois, following the services.

Memorials may be made to the St. John's Altar Guild.

John "Jack" Fox

John 'Jack' Fox, Sr., 67, of Wayland, Missouri, died Monday, October 28, 2002 at 1:39 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Jack Fox was born icon on February 7, 1935 in Alexandria, Missouri. He was the son of Floyd and Erma Goldman Fox. He married icon Sally Ann Maynard on April 23, 1955 in Deadwood, South Dakota. She survives. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He had been employed for thirty-four years for Pepsi-Cola Memphis Bottling Company, Keokuk division until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the Alexandria Gun Club and was serving as President at the time of his death. He was a board member of the Clark County Ambulance Board and served on the rescue squad for Clark County. He was past president of Wayland Senior Housing. He was a former member of the Alexandria Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Fox, of Wayland, Missouri; four sons, Tim Fox of Wayland, Missouri, Mike Fox and his wife, Jerrilynn of Wayland, Missouri, William Fox and his wife, Ruth, of Kahoka, Missouri, Floyd Fox and his wife, Vicky, of St. Patrick, Missouri; daughter-in-law, Tammy Fox Riebel and her husband, Clay, of Wayland; brother-in-law, Douglas Maynard and his wife, Anita, Mobridge, South Dakota; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters-in-law, Betty Fox of Revere, Missouri and Charlotte Fox of Wayland; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Douglas Wayne Fox and John D. Fox, Jr.; two brothers, David and Sid Fox; and two sisters, Viola Ward and Helen Coppler.

Services were Thursday, October 31, 2002 at the Wayland Baptist Church in Wayland, Missouri with Reverend Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial was in Sand Cemetery in St. Francisville, Missouri with military rites.

Lois Jean Geltz

Lois Jean Geltz, 80, of Keokuk, died early Friday morning, November 29, 2002, at her home.

Lois Geltz was born icon on July 5, 1922, in Keokuk, the daughter of Royal and Allie Hunter Chadwick. She married icon George E. Geltz on August 1, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. He survives. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1940. She was a member of First Christian Church and had taught Sunday school for a number of years. She enjoyed traveling, camping, and studying and watching birds. She also enjoyed genealogy, geology, reading, flowers and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, George E. Geltz of Keokuk; two sons, Bruce Geltz and wife, Susan of Argyle, Iowa and Wayne Geltz and wife, Cynthia, of Keokuk; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Andrews and husband, Jim, of Ames, Iowa and Bernice Adams of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Colleen Brosi and Lucille Chadwick, both of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald Chadwick.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 2, 2002, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Shriners' Crippled Children's Hospital.

Larry Gilpin

Larry Lee Gilpin, 55, of Hamilton, Illinois, died Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at 4:42 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Larry Gilpin was born icon on March 10, 1947, in Alsey, Illinois. He was the son of William Everett and Vivian L. Sellars Gilpin. He lived most of his life in Keokuk and had been a resident of Hamilton, Illinois for the last four years. He was employed in production at Keokuk Steel Castings in Keokuk. He love to fish and he will be missed.

Survivors include three brothers, Jack Gilpin of Carthage, Illinois, Charles Gilpin and his wife, Quinda, of Burlington, Iowa, and Dennis Gilpin and his wife, Jeannie, of Nauvoo, Illinois; three sisters, Joyce Sackman and her husband, George of Keokuk, Iowa, Mary Sommers and her husband, John, of West Burlington, Iowa and Anna Juffer and her husband, Dennis, of Keokuk; sixteen nieces and nephews; twenty-four great nieces and great nephews; and a special friend, Lamona Warner, of Hamilton, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1993; his mother in 1997; grandparents, John and Mary Hepworth Sellars and Oscar and Gertrude Decker Gilpin; uncles; aunts; and two nieces and nephews.

Services were Friday, June 14, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Arwin "Buzz" Holman

Arwin A. “'Buzz”' Holman, 67, of Keokuk, died at 9:55 AM Thursday, December 19, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Carthage, Illinois.

He was born icon November 30, 1935, in Sanborn, Iowa, the son of Leo and Elaine Chase Holman. He served in the United States Navy with the Seabees. He had lived in Keokuk for 49 years and was a machinist at Kerr Fabricators and MMC Enterprises. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Keokuk. He was a member of 'ABATE' Organization of Iowa and enjoyed riding his Harley, liked to hunt, and enjoyed being outdoors.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Holman of Keokuk and his companion, Barb Johnson of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

There were no services.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

Pearl J. Jeffers

Pearl Junior Jeffers, 84, of Argyle, Iowa, died at 1:16 PM Sunday, November 17, 2002, at Great River Medical Center in Burlington, Iowa.

He was born icon January 18, 1918, the son of William Pearl and Irene Ota Wilsey Jeffers. He married icon Anna Louise Hanson on December 9, 1939 in Keokuk, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1986. He was a farmer and lived most of his life in the Argyle and Keokuk area except for six years during World War II when he lived in California and worked in the shipyards. He was employed by Borg-Warner in Keokuk for 10 years until his retirement.

He was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church; the Farm Bureau; and was a regular customer at 'One Stop' in Argyle. He enjoyed sports, especially the St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by three children, David Jeffers of Keokuk, William Jeffers of Argyle, Iowa and Christine Vaughn and her husband, Ernie, of New London, Iowa; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; four sisters, Gertrude McCarty of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Mary Elizabeth Case of Long Beach, California, Neva Springer and her husband, Forrest, of Kahoka, Missouri and Joann Evans of Letts, Iowa; and numerous nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in dearth by his parents; his wife; and a brother, William A. Jeffers during World War II.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 21, 2002, at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Rev. John Abraham officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery at Vincennes, Iowa.

Arthur L. Johnson

Arthur L. Johnson, 82, of rural Kahoka, Missouri, died Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 8:00 P.M. at the Clark County Nursing Home in Kahoka, Missouri.

Arthur Johnson was born icon on March 11, 1920 in Augusta, Illinois. He was the son of George W. and Pearl Jane Lambert Johnson. He married icon Carrie L. Burkhart on February 2, 1946 in Keokuk. She survives. He served with the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a prisoner of war for twenty-one months and during the last ten days of his service, he fought with the Russian Army. He had lived in Kahoka since 1950 and had been employed as an ironworker until 1980. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk. He was a member of the Hiram Lodge #362 of Kahoka and a 32-degreeMason of the Consistory Valley of St. Louis.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Johnson, of Kahoka, Missouri; two half sisters; and several cousins including Juanita Smeltser of Wayland, Missouri and Earl Baugher of Winter Haven, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one half-sister.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 23, 2002, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Cathie Courtois officiating. Burial with Military Rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery.
