Raymond L. Overhulser

Raymond L. Overhulser, 44, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, died Wednesday, September 11, 2002 at his home.

Raymond Overhulser was born icon on January 25, 1958 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Clarence L. Overhulser and Eloise M. Rowan Overhulser Walther. He is survived locally by his mother, Eloise Walther.

Graveside services and inurnment were Friday, September 20, 2002 in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk.

Charles V. Peters

Charles V. Peters, 69, of 2524 Hilton Road, Keokuk, died at 4:55 AM Saturday, June 22, 2002, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born icon April 17, 1933, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Victor B. and Carol Johnson Peters. He married icon Dolly Mortimer on October 19, 1952 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives.

He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk. He and his brother, Gail Peters had owned and operated Peters Dairy. He was employed by Union Electric as a power plant operator for 18 years, retiring in February 2000. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and retired from the Army Reserves. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and Keokuk Lodge #29, A.F. & A.M. He served on the Jackson Township Board. He enjoyed coin collecting, hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly of Keokuk; three children, Linda Fortner and her husband, Tom, of Keokuk, Victor Peters and his wife, Wendy, of Inverness, Illinois and Amy Peters of Springfield, Missouri; three granddaughters, Heather Evans, Amanda LeMaster and Jennifer Fortner and two grandsons, Garrett Peters and Conner Peters; a sister, Faye Bunch and her husband, Harold, of Macomb, Illinois; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Bruce; and his brother, Gail Peters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 25, at DeJong's Funeral Home. Burial with full Military Rites will be in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society.

Laurence "Sonny" Riter

Laurence Leo '“Sonny'” Riter, 67, of Keokuk, Iowa died Monday, August 5, 2002 in Keokuk, Iowa.

Laurence Riter was born icon on March 20, 1935 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Laurence Leo, Sr. and Laura Redden Riter. He married icon Marie Ziegenfuss on December 12, 1963 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk Senior High. He had been employed as a woodworker at Keokuk Steel Castings in the pattern shop for twenty-eight years, retiring in 1990. He had served in the United States Army. He was a member of B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #106, American Legion Post #41, the Southside Boat Club, and was a past member of the Eagles. He was an expert wood worker. He loved playing cards, was an avid golfer, and was a bowler when he was younger. He was a loyal pool shooter and played in the Monday night pool league.

Survivors include a son, Laurence “Larry” Riter and friend, Jennifer Thrush, of Keokuk, Iowa; a daughter, Leane Marie Hays and her husband, Todd, of Tallahassee, Florida; three grandchildren, Lauren Riter of Hamilton, Illinois and Cody Hays and Kellie Hays of Tallahassee, Florida; four sisters, Wilma O’Daniel of Wenden, Arizona, Maxine Loring of Keokuk, Iowa, Velma Rossi of Biggsville, Illinois and Joyce Grout and her husband, Steve, of Spring Hill, Florida; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marjorie Munson, of Carthage, Illinois.

Services were held Thursday, August 8, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Paul Pennington officiating. Burial with full military rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for his grandchildren.

Wesley W. Rose

Wesley Willard Rose, 92, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Thursday, January 9, 2003 at 11:10 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Wesley Rose was born icon on March 16, 1910 in Rushville, Illinois. He was the son of Omar and Bessie Busby Rose. He married icon Evelyn Long on July 13, 1929 in Keokuk. She preceded him in death on February 19, 1988. He married icon Hyla Bice on October 11, 1988 in Pikeville, Tennessee and she preceded him in death on September 19, 1993. He later married icon Elma Hageman and she also preceded him in death. He moved to Rock Island, Illinois in 1935 where he was employed at International Harvester. He moved to Keokuk in 1940 and was employed at Kemo Foundry. He then went to work at The Hubinger Company in 1943 and was employed for twenty-eight years. He was retired for thirty years and also farmed for forty years. He attended Crossview Fellowship Church.

Survivors include six sons, Phil Rose and his wife, Duke, of Keokuk, Iowa, Joe Rose and his wife, Ruth, of Keokuk, Iowa, Bob Rose and his wife, Beverly, of Keokuk, Iowa, Albert Rose and his wife, Rosie, of Hesperia, California, Dave Rose and his wife, Vi, of Hesperia, California, John Rose and his wife, Carol, of Keokuk, Iowa; one daughter, Esther Glasgow and her husband, Fred, of Florida; twenty-one grandchildren; fifty-three great-grandchildren; thirty great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ethel Wilson, of Keokuk, Iowa; one brother, Frank Rose, of Keokuk, Iowa; and one daughter-in-law, Virginia Rose, of Keokuk, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; one son, Paul Rose; an infant daughter, Cynthia M. Rose; seven sisters; and one brother.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Marvin R. Royal

Marvin Robert Royal, 67, of Keokuk, died at 8:00 A.M., Thursday, November 21, 2002, at Keokuk Nursing Center.

Marvin Royal was born icon on December 14, 1934, in Emerald, Nebraska. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth Engel Royal.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed as a handyman and a clockmaker. He was also employed as a clerk at the Keokuk transfer station.
Survivors include two sisters, Doris Rickert of Summitville, Iowa and Francis Waters of Ft. Madison, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bernice Ruark

Bernice Ruark, 89 of Keokuk, died at 4:20 AM Saturday, September 14, 2002 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Bernice Ruark was born icon on July 7, 1913 in Blandinsville, Illinois. She was the daughter of Fred Mills and Lenna Ray Mills Bellowes. She married icon Forrest M. “Dick” Ruark on July 31, 1932 in Macomb, Illinois. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1983. She had been employed at Barton’s Music Store in her younger years and was the executive secretary to the administrator of Graham Hospital until her retirement in 1975. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and was a member of the First Lutheran Church. She loved to travel and play bingo.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Ruark and his wife, Sherry, of Hamilton, Illinois, Tony Ruark and his wife, Connie, of Wichita, Kansas and Jack Ruark of Columbia, Illinois; one daughter, Joy Hasper and her husband, Charles, of Montrose, Iowa; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and an infant son, Gary Lee.

Funeral services were held Monday, September 16, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Harold Shaffer

Harold P. Shaffer, 87, of 822 Franklin Street, Keokuk, died at 3:05 PM Friday, October 4, 2002, at his home.

Harold Shaffer was born icon September 3, 1915, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of John Roger and Kathryn Olive Pickett Shaffer. He married icon Margaret Ketha on April 12, 1941, in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives. He was employed in the refinery at Hubinger Company for 26 years, retiring on January 1, 1979. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the men’s group at the church and was a member of Local #48 of the American Grain Millers Union.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two sons, Gregory Harold Shaffer and his wife, Barbara, of Orion, Illinois and Karl Roger “Buck” Shaffer and his wife, Debra, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two granddaughters, Steffanie Perry and Stacie Smith and one grandson, Gregory Shaffer; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six sisters and one step grandson.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 8, 2002, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Pennington officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or Lee County Hospice.

Larry Soderstrom

Larry Steve Soderstrom, 55, of 1600 Silverleaf Avenue, Burlington, Iowa and formerly of Keokuk, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 in rural Jefferson County, Iowa, as a result of an automobile accident.

Larry Soderstrom was born icon on September 1, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Donald Wayne Soderstrom and Ruby E. Riddle Soderstrom Leggett. He lived in Keokuk through his high school years. He served in the United States Navy during Vietnam and then moved to Denver Colorado, returning to Burlington to live three years ago. He was employed as an estimator for drywall hanging. He belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Burlington, Iowa. He enjoyed cooking, eating, golf, and reading.

Survivors include his mother, Ruby E. Leggett, of San Angelo, Texas; two daughters, Nicole Quick and husband, Byron, of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Tonya Thurman and husband, Robert, of Warsaw, Illinois; three grandchildren, Lacey, Lindsey, and Lexis Thurman; four sisters, Donna Dringenberg of Pekin, Illinois, Marty Marr and husband, Kay, of Greeley, Colorado, Norma Cox of New Mexico, and Sharon Little and husband, Jon, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; his stepmother, Lela Soderstrom, of Greely, Colorado; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Iva Starky of Illinois; one brother, Donald Wayne Starky; and grandparents.

Services were Monday, July 15, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Reverend Dan Houghtaling officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with military rites.

Memorials have been established in his name for the National Kidney Foundation or to Diabetes Research.

Jeanne Vogel

Jeanne Rita Vogel, 76, of Keokuk, died Sunday morning, January 19, 2003 at River Hills Village after an extended illness.

Jeanne Vogel was born icon on April 26, 1926. She was the daughter of Ray and Grace McNally. She attended St. Peter’s Schools, Quincy Business College, and was a member of the Catholic community. She married icon Herbert J. Vogel, Jr. on November 17, 1952. He preceded her in death on August 10, 1974.

Survivors include three children, Mark Vogel and his wife, Becky of Keokuk, Iowa, Dyan Vogel Boyd and her husband, Jim, of Snellville, Georgia, and Neal Vogel and his wife, Ellyn, of Evanston, Illinois; four grandsons, Tim McGovney, Alex and Shamus Boyd, and Ethan Vogel, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and a brother, Leo McNally.

There were no services held.

She donated her body to the University of Iowa Medical College for research.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials in her name be made to River Hills Village of Keokuk.

Michelle Lea Washburn

Michelle Lea Washburn, 34, of Maumelle, Arkansas, died Monday, October 28, 2002, at her home.

She was born icon December 3, 1967, in Alliance, Nebraska, the daughter of Beryl and Bonnie Walker Brunsch and was raised by her stepfather and mother, Don and Bonnie Reed. In 1986, she graduated from St. Agnes Acadamy in Alliance, Nebraska. After graduating, she went to Travel Trade Schoolin Littleton, Colorado. She then worked in the airline industry and was employed by Continental Airlines for eight years.

She married icon Michael Washburn on November 18, 1995 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He survives.

She is survived by her husband, Michael Washburn of Maumelle, Arkansas; stepdaughter, Kristin McBride of Tulsa, Oklahoma; her parents, Don and Bonnie Reed of Alliance Nebraska and Beryl Brunsch of South Dakota; a brother, James Reed of Omaha, Nebraska; a sister, Lori Eggleston of Friend, Nebraska; grandparents, Hobert and Kathleen Gilles of Whitewood, South Dakota; two aunts, Peggy David and her husband, James, of Sheridan, Wyoming and Rita Blom of Belvidere, South Dakota; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Don & Pearl Washburn of Keokuk, Iowa; sister-in-law, Debra McPherson and her husband, Mike, of Carthage, Missouri; brother-in-law, Mark Washburn and his wife, Tracy, of Keokuk, Iowa; and nieces and nephews, Rachelle Wilson of Nashville, Tennessee, Hannah and Marlee Washburn of Keokuk, Iowa; J.D. McPherson of Wichita, Kansas; and Scott and Amy McPherson of Carthage, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by grandparents.

Memorial services were held Monday, November 4, 2002, at United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, Iowa, with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Inurnment followed in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Scholarship Fund of United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, Iowa.

Donald Washburn

Donald D. Washburn, 80, of Keokuk, died at 8:45 Sunday evening, December 15, 2002, at his home.

He was born icon July 11, 1992 in Williamstown, Missouri, the son of Dewey and Mamie McMarlin Washburn. He married icon Pearl I. Solter on October 28, 1945 in LaGrange, Missouri. She survives. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was employed in production at Hubinger Company for 32 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk and had served as a Deacon and Trustee. He was a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He enjoyed woodworking, repairing things for neighborhood children, and fishing when he had time. He was a Cardinal and Hawkeye fan.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl Washburn of Keokuk; three children, Mike Washburn of Little Rock, Arkansas, Debra McPherson and her husband, Mike, of Carthage, Missouri and Mark Washburn and his wife, Tracy, of Keokuk; two sisters, Martha Kraus and her husband, Jack, of Keokuk and Wanna Glasscock and her husband, J.C., of Keokuk; five grandchildren, Kristin McBride and her husband, Jason, of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Scott McPherson and his wife, Amy, of Pittsburgh, Kansas, J.D. McPherson of Wichita, Kansas, Hannah and Marlee Washburn of Keokuk; and two great grandchildren, Joshua and Caleb McBride of Sapulpa, Oklahoma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Washburn; and a grandson, Joshua Washburn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 19, 2002, at United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial with full military rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery following the services.

Memorials may be made to Area Scholarship Funds of the Presbyterian Church or to American Cancer Society.

Leah "Leona" Wilkerson

Leah Leona Wilkerson, 72, of Keokuk and formerly of Argyle, Iowa, died Monday, July 22, 2002 at 5:10 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Leah Wilkerson was born icon on December 14, 1929 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas Bryan and Sarah Rosetta Marshall Benge. She married icon Alfred V. Wilkerson on February 4, 1950 in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1992. She lived in the Argyle-Keokuk area for fifty years and was a homemaker. She loved birds, especially parakeets and cockatiels. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include one son, Will Wilkerson of Columbia, Missouri; one daughter, Onalie Nye of Davenport, Iowa; four stepsons, Mance Wilkerson of Portland, Oregon, Alfred “Rocky” Wilkerson of Keokuk, Iowa, James Wilkerson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Richard Wilkerson of Williamstown, Missouri; two brothers, Morris Lee of California and Charles Benge of Ft. Madison, Iowa; three sisters, Phyllis Snider, Alice Summers, and Cecelia Hill, all of Quincy, Illinois; twenty-seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four siblings; a daughter, Alice Christine Mullen; and one grandson.

Services were Friday, July 26, 2002 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend John Hays officiating. Burial was in Argyle Memorial Gardens in Argyle, Iowa.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Bobbie Jo Wrieden

Bobbi Jo Wrieden, 18, of Keokuk, died Friday afternoon, November 8, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident north of Keokuk.

She was born icon July 31, 1984, in Keokuk, the daughter of Robert and Kellie Hardman Wrieden. She was a senior at Keokuk High School and was employed by Burger King. She loved being with her friends, listening to music, and being an 18-year-old.

She is survived by her father, Robert Wrieden and Rhea Humes of Keokuk; her mother, Kellie Smith and her husband, Ed, of Keokuk; two sisters, Misty Wrieden and Trina Wrieden of Keokuk; paternal grandmother, Lois Wrieden of Luray, Missouri and maternal grandparents, Glenda and Jerry Hardman Sr. of Keokuk; great-grandmother, Viola Hardman of Keokuk; niece, Kylie Wrieden of Keokuk; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Francis Wrieden; great-grandparents, Pansy and Horace Mann and Darrel Hardman.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 13, 2002, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners’ Crippled Children Hospitals.
