Lois I. Young

Lois I. Young, 77, of Montrose, Iowa died Friday, May 21, 2004 at 7:30 A.M. at her home in Montrose, Iowa.

Lois Young was born icon on January 2, 1927 on the family farm in Montrose, Iowa. She was the daughter of Simon and Ellen Trump Bergthold. She married icon David A. Young on August 18, 1946. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1979. She had been employed at Sheaffer Pen Company in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She was a lifelong member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Montrose. She was also a member of the Ft. Madison Senior Citizens Newberry Center, the Montrose Senior Citizens, the Montrose Garden Club, and was a member of the Mississippi Valley Travel Trailer Club. She was a volunteer with R.S.V.P. in Ft. Madison, and in her younger years, she volunteered with Sunday school and Bible school at her church. She enjoyed baking pies and gardening, and she especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, Daryl Young, of Montrose, Iowa; one daughter, Marilyn Hunter, of Montrose, Iowa; two grandchildren, Karen Hunter Barnes and her husband, Mike, of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Jerry Hunter of Montrose, Iowa; three great-grandchildren including twins Adam and Aaron, and Anthony; one brother, Milton Bergthold, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Carolyn Giles and her husband, Larry, of Branson, Missouri, Arlene Vogel and her husband, Jerry, of Ames, Iowa, and Gloria Townsend of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son-in-law, Dean Hunter.

Services were Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose with Reverend Elliott George officiating. Burial was in the Montrose Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

John R. "Bob" Young

John Robert “Bob” Young, 68, of Warsaw, Illinois, died on August 10, 2003 at his home.

He was born icon on March 7, 1935 in Keokuk, Iowa to John and Gertrude Berthold Young. Bob married icon his high school sweetheart, Ellen Marie Thalmann, on August 12, 1956 in the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw. She survives.

Bob was a 1953 graduate of Warsaw High School. He attended the University of Missouri for two years and later graduated from Iowa Wesleyan with a Bachelors of Science Degree. Bob taught middle school math and science in various Hancock County schools for twenty years before going to work at Dadant and Sons in Hamilton, Illinois where he retired as plant manager in 1998.

Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw. He was also a member of the Warsaw Masonic Lodge #257. Bob was an avid waterfowl hunter and enjoyed the sport his entire life. He was known for his sense of humor and his family and friends will cherish their memories of his many practical jokes. Bob was also a great storyteller. He loved living in Warsaw and had many fond memories to relate about the people he knew during his childhood and school years there. Bob was a talented athlete during those days and made All-State in football his senior year, but people remember his abilities on the football field, basketball court, baseball diamond, and track field alike.

Bob greatly enjoyed the company of family and friends. He believed that a person’s worth could be measured by the quality of his friendships and felt that he had been quite blessed. Bob had been able to enjoy his family and friends for an additional five years because he was gifted with a heart transplant after waiting in the university of Iowa Hospital for four months. Bob’s family and friends will be forever grateful to the donor’s family for the additional time they were given with him.

In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by four children, Suzanne Elting and her husband, Ted, of Warsaw, Illinois, Betsy Lieb and her husband, Frank, of Lombard, Illinois, John Young of Warsaw, Illinois and Sarah Young of Rushville, Illinois; five granddaughters , Danielle Vogel of Waukegan, Illinois, Annie Vogel of Warsaw, Illinois, Meagan Vogel of Warsaw, Illinois, Elisa and Sarah Lieb of Lombard, Illinois; a great-granddaughter, Emma Phillips, of Warsaw, Illinois; a brother, Bill Young and his wife, Sharon, of Osceola, Iowa; and a sister, Mary Lou Courtney and her husband, Ron, of New Port Richey, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw with Reverend William Olmsted officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw or to the Masonic Lodge #257 of Warsaw.

Earnest A. Wyant

Earnest A. Wyant, 82, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at his home in Keokuk, Iowa.

Earnest Wyant was born icon on September 29, 1920 in Canton, Illinois. He was the son of Henry O. and Emma J. Barnes Wyant. He married icon Jessie M. Rose on October 6, 1946 in Keokuk. She preceded him in death on January 12, 1999. He had been employed at Caterpillar Company in Peoria, Illinois as a shipper for thirty years until his retirement in 1982. He had lived in Keokuk since 1986. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Carthage, Illinois.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda L. Ginger, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Jesse Wyant, of Peoria, Illinois; and two sisters, Cora Parks of Farmington, Illinois and Lola Barnes of Tampa, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, and two sisters.

Services were Friday, June 13, 2003 at 1:30 P.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Gary Russell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation was Thursday, June 12, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home after 3:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

A memorial has been established.

Helen Wilson

Helen Lucille Stark-Wilson, 75, of Keokuk, died surrounded by her family at 7:15 PM Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Donnellson Health Center in Donnellson, Iowa.

She was born icon July 25, 1928 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Pearl Fry Stark. Helen had been employed at the Chuck Wagon Café for 21 years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of New Testament Christian Church. She was an avid reader and a movie buff.

Helen is survived by two daughters, Dee Rippenkroeger of Keokuk and Karen Reinig of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; a son, Sonny Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, Stacie McKay and her husband, Rob, of Keokuk, Jason Rippenkroeger and his wife, Aimee, of Keokuk, Jenny Rodriguez of Olathe, Kansas and Jane Wilson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Land of Muscatine, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by several brothers and sisters.

Graveside services were held Monday, January 5, 2003, at Sunset Memorial Park with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Edith Wilsey

Edith L. Wilsey, 94, of Keokuk, died at 2:59 PM Saturday, January 3, 2004 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon December 30, 1909 in Christian County, Illinois, the daughter of Fred and Emma Ostermeier Hederich. She married icon Ernest F Rittman on November 10, 1929 and he preceded her in death on December 28, 1961. She then married icon Guymon R '“Dutch'” Wilsey on February 25, 1964 in Keokuk. He survives. She had lived in Keokuk since 1929 and had been employed by Wrights Fairway and at The Vogue clothing store.

She was a longtime and active member of the First Lutheran Church where she was a member of the women’s organizations, had been in the church choir, and had taught Sunday School. She was a 50-year member of Elmira Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and Elmira’s Past Matrons Club; Malta Shrine of White Shrine of Jerusalem; and had worked as a Red Cross Lady during World War II.

She is survived by her husband, Guymon R. “'Dutch'” Wilsey of Keokuk; daughter, Betty Marie Young of Keokuk; two stepdaughters, Willeane Wilsey Schave of East Moline, Illinois and Lila Wilsey Kimball of Warsaw, Illinois; a granddaughter, Susan Young Breitenstein of Marshfield, Missouri; five step-granddaughters, Cheryl Kimball Mauermann of West Allis, Wisconsin, Denise Sperry LaBatt of Pekin, Illinois, Rheta Sperry of East Moline, Illinois, Margo Sperry Mills of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Andrea Sperry McBride of East Moline, Illinois; two step-grandsons, Stephen Kimball of Kempner, Texas and Allen Kimball of Tell City, Indiana; one sister, Mary Ellen Griffin of St Louis, Missouri; two great grandsons, Billy and Jacob Breitenstein ; and several step-great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and stepmother; four brothers Frank, Carl, Herman and Alfred Hederich; three sisters Win Hederich, Marie Harms and Betty Harms; one grandson, Norman Dale Young, II; two step-grandchildren, Shari and Elli Kimball; and one step great grandson, Aaron Mills.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 7, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Alzheimer’'s Association, or Shiners' Crippled Children'’s Hospital.

Philip "Dean" Williams

Philip “'Dean'” Williams, 72, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 9:52 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Dean Williams was born icon on March 19, 1932 in Chili Township, Illinois. He was the son of Kenneth F. and Grace Pauline Thornton Williams. He married icon Clarita Langston on November 19, 1958 in Davenport, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2002. He served overseas with the United States Navy on the U.S.S. Wisconsin during the Korean Conflict. He had been employed at Montgomery Ward, Chanen'’s Auto Supply in Keokuk and Hamilton for a number of years, and was then employed at Wal-Mart for over ten years. He was a member of the St. Paul United Church of Christ, American Legion Post #41, and V.F.W. Post # 3508. He enjoyed sitting by the river, and gathering with friends at McDonalds and the American Legion Hall. He attended area trap shoots, enjoyed fastpitch softball, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Survivors include two sons, David L. Williams of Keokuk, Iowa and Mark D. Williams and fiancé, Wendy Thyson, of Quincy, Illinois; one daughter, Leah D. Williams, of Keokuk, Iowa; three grandchildren, David L. Williams II, Amanda J. Williams, and Devan J. Williams; brother and sister-in-law, Max and Ellie Williams, of Quincy, Illinois; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Clarita in 2002.

Services were Monday, July 26, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with the Reverend Jack Spratte officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ or to Keokuk Area Hospital.

Bernadine Wilhelm

Bernadine Margaret Wilhelm, 88, of Keokuk, died at 6:51 PM Friday, July 30, 2004 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon November 7, 1915, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ellen M. Peterson Carmichael. She married icon John H. Wilhelm on January 15, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on January 28,1996. She was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Wilhelm of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Stan Wilhelm and his wife, Doris, of Keokuk; and two granddaughters, Dr. Lisa Wilhelm Mossengren and her husband, Douglas, of Twin Lakes, Wisconsin and Katie Wilhelm of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 2, 2004, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Hoyt Whitebread officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Keokuk or to Keokuk Area Hospital.

Samantha Whiteside

Samantha Marie Whiteside, 21, of Keokuk, died Thursday morning, November 25, 2004 at her home.

She was born icon October 26, 1983, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Robert. G. “R.G.” and Penny Stephens Whiteside, Jr. She was a lifelong Keokuk resident. She was chosen Little Miss Main Street of Keokuk. She played Girls’ Little League softball and was on a state championship team. She was selected to serve as Miss Lee County. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 2002. She had been a cheerleader in high school and was a local leader of High School Students for Better Highways in Northeast Missouri. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Keokuk. She had attended Des Moines Area Community College. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was well known for singing at many local functions including Veterans’ activities and the Burlington Bees games.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Penny and David Hotop of Keokuk and her father, R.G. Whiteside of Harvey, Iowa; two brothers, Kory Hotop and Ethan Hotop of Keokuk; stepbrother, Jared Hotop of Ft. Madison, Iowa and stepsister, Andrea Marshall of Niota, Illinois; maternal aunt and uncle, Shari and Dan Dunagan of Keokuk; paternal aunts and uncles, Bob Gundy of Keokuk, Nancy Riddle of Keokuk, Sandra DePew of Farmington, Iowa, Ruth Ann Scott of Quincy, Illinois, Pam Ciciliano of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Barbara Glasgow of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Jonnie Huston of Keokuk of Keokuk and Joan Whitmore of Montrose, Iowa; step grandmother, Florence Hotop of Ft. Madison, Iowa; step uncles and aunts, William Hotop and his wife, Diana, of Springfield, Virginia, Thomas Hotop and his wife, Earlyne, of West Point, Iowa, Carol Peterschmidt of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Kevin Hotop of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Jeff Hotop and his wife, Traci, of Salem, Iowa; and many cousins and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles R. and Helen M. Stephens, paternal grandparents, Robert & Virginia Whiteside, step grandfather, Carl Hotop; step grandmother, Edwina Whiteside; and great aunt, Thelma Hilberer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Kiyoko White

Kiyoko N. White, 77, of Keokuk, Iowa, died of a massive stroke at 11:25 AM Sunday, October 10, 2004, in Keokuk Area Hospital, Keokuk, Iowa.

She was born icon on January 30, 1927, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, the daughter of Ichiro and Ito Nogi. She was a graduate of Tokyo Womens University, Tokyo, Japan.

She married icon Isamu Hikida in Tokyo, Japan in December 1950. On December 17, 1959, she married icon C.A. White in Tokyo, Japan. He survives. She then lived in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, before moving to the United States in September 1987.

Survivors include: a son, Shu Hikida, of Albuquerque, NM; a daughter, Sanae Hogan, and her husband Donald, of Covington, KY; and George N. White of Keokuk; and three grandchildren, Sean Hogan, Toby Hogan, Michiko Hikida; and two great grandchildren, Mackenzie Hogan and Alexa Batchelder.

She was preceded in death by one sister.

Her organs were donated for organ transplant and medical research and the body was cremated.

A memorial service will be held in Tokyo, Japan at a later date.

Clyde E. Wells

Clyde E. Wells, 50, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at 5:35 P.M. at Lexington Square in Keokuk, Iowa.

Clyde Wells was born icon on May 1, 1954 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He was the son of Robert F. Sr. and Rosa Lee Tate Wells. He had lived in Keokuk since the age of seven. While in high school, he excelled at wrestling and was the first in his weight class to compete at the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament from Keokuk. After high school he served with the United State Army. He had been employed in production at Keokuk Ferrol-Sil and was a member of the local union. He was a former Deacon of God’s Way Christian Center and attended Bible study classes. He played bass guitar in the church band.

Survivors include his son, Zachariah Eugene Wells of Keokuk, Iowa; his mother, Rosa Lee Wells of Keokuk, Iowa; nine brothers and sisters, Robert F. Wells, Jr. of Boulder Creek, California, Darrell Wells and his wife, Merry, of Keokuk, Iowa, Jodie Wells of Santa Cruz, California, David Wells and his wife, Angela, of Keokuk, Iowa, Deborah Wells and her finance, John, of Des Moines, Iowa, Vickie Bradley and her husband, Eric, of Keokuk, Iowa, Marvell Wells of Des Moines, Iowa, Robin Head and her husband, Damon of Des Moines, Iowa, and Shawn Wells and her finance, J.B. of Orlando, Florida; eleven nieces; eleven nephews; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and several aunts and uncles.

Services were Monday, September 20, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Pastor J.T. Brown and Pastor Debra Letcher officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with military rites.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bertha Watson

Bertha Kathryne Watson, 91, of Keokuk, died at 1:55 AM Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon May 24, 1912 in Warsaw, Illinois, the daughter of Edward and Ethel Landers Kircherr. She married icon Richard Kenneth Watson on September 11, 1954 in Pocahontas, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2002. She had lived in the Warsaw and Keokuk area Most of her life. She had been employed in production at Shellor-Globe for 30 years, retiring in 1972. She had then worked in the dietary department at Keokuk Area Hospital for 15 years, retiring in 1987. She also worked in concession stands at area ballparks.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk. She was an avid coin collector; doll collector; and quilt maker, having made 150 quilts. She also enjoyed ceramics and had operated her own ceramics shop.

She is survived by one daughter, Shirley Woods of Keokuk; three grandchildren, Shelley Travis of Warsaw, Illinois, Tim Woods and his wife, Lonna, of Davenport, Iowa and Todd Woods and his wife, Terrie, of Keokuk; six great-grandchildren, Zachary & Layton Travis of Warsaw, Illinois, Tyler, Cory & Austin Woods of Davenport, Iowa and Drake Woods of Keokuk; one sister, Lidia Wright of Maryland; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Esther Morris and Mildred Collins.

Graveside inurnment services were held Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw, Illinois, with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating.

Anthony L. Washburn

Anthony L. Washburn, 65, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003 at 1:20 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Anthony Washburn was born icon on January 31, 1937 in Keokuk. He was the son of Martin Leroy and Irene C. Lambert Washburn. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and was employed in construction. He received Honorable Discharges from both the United States Army and the Iowa National Guard. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and spending time outdoors.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Flower and her husband, Robert, of Oak Park, Illinois and Debbie Worrell and her husband, Bill; eight sisters, Vivian Mahoney and her husband, Elmer of Keokuk, Sheila Kay and her husband, John, of Keokuk, Kathrine Boltz and her husband, Robert, of Keokuk, Dolores Wadden of Keokuk, Sharon Cockrell of Keokuk, Ilene Robertson of Keokuk, Lucille Solomon of Keokuk, and Shirley Dodge and her husband, Sonny, of Hamilton, Illinois; three brothers, Glenn Washburn and his wife, Jean, of Keokuk, Keith Washburn and his wife, Diane, of Keokuk, and Pat Washburn and his wife, Sandra, of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth Ginnaris; and three brothers, John Washburn, Carl Washburn, and one in infancy.

Services were Friday, January 31, 2003 at All Saints Catholic Church in Keokuk with Reverend Christopher David officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church.
