Treasure O. Waltman

Treasure O. Waltman, 81, of Keokuk died Thursday, February 3, 2005 at her home in Keokuk, Iowa.

Treasure Waltman was born icon on September 26, 1923 in Bloomfield, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arden and Myrle M. Rodfer Penrod. She married icon Leroy Waltman on March 16, 1956 in Hernando, Mississippi. He preceded her in death on June 7, 1993. She had lived in Keokuk since 1953 and was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and going to the mule festival in Kahoka, Missouri. She enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Roberta Lee of Florida, Robert Van Patten and his wife, Betty, of Florida, James P. Houston and his wife, Sue, of Kahoka, Missouri, Sharon Atterberg and her husband, Jack, of Sandusky, Iowa, Ardith Lanning and her husband, Tom, of Peoria, Illinois, and Leroy Waltman, Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Quincy, Illinois; eighteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons; and one brother.

Services were Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Joseph B. Walte

Joseph B. Walte, 88, of Montrose, Iowa, died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at 1:00 A.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Joseph Walte was born icon on January 7, 1915 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of John and Winfred Howell Walte. He married icon Dorothy Preston on July 11, 1937 in Reno, Nevada. He had lived in Keokuk most of his life except for several years that he spent in California during WW II. During that time he helped in the construction of the Hoover Dam. He was co-founder and co-owner of Walte & Farnum Construction Company. He later founded and owned Walte Construction Company. He built the Sisters Home at 8th & Timea which currently houses Young House. He did the concrete work for the Keokuk Police and Fire Department building and helped construct other schools in the Tri-State Area. He was a member of the Moose Club, was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Keokuk Yacht Club where he was a past Commodore. He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Walte of Keokuk, Iowa; three sons, Milton Walte and his wife, Marilyn of Keokuk, Iowa, Ed Walte and his wife, Maxine of Keokuk, Iowa, and Bill Walte and his wife, Carol, of Sacramento, California; two daughters, Violet Miles of Hoffman Estates, Illinois and Tracy Walte of Keokuk, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Tonya and Margaret Walte, Tim Miles, Prudy Schmidth, and Lori, Bill, Joe, and Jeff Walte; several great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Matthew Walte; and one sister, Marguerite Guttings.

Services were Thursday, March 6, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Christopher David officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Catholic Schools in his name.

Robert M. Walker

Robert Marion Walker, 91, of Keokuk, died Friday, April 02, 2004 at 10:33 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Robert Walker was born icon on March 30, 1913 in Winchester, Missouri. He was the son of Francis M. and Rosemary Smith Walker. He married icon Wilma Banks on May 29, 1936 in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on December 17, 2000. He had lived in Keokuk since 1936 and had been employed at National Carbide for thirty-two years, retiring in 1986. He later worked at the Hubinger Company and Steel Castings as a Pinkerton guard. He also worked for 14 years as custodian for the United Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Keokuk Lodge #29 A.F. & A.M., and had been a member of Elks Lodge #106.

Survivors include son-in-law, Bruce Van Dever of Keokuk; daughter-in-law, Judy Walker of Promise City, Iowa; three grandchildren, Lisa Fuller of Ft. Madison, Lynn Schwiete and her husband, Chuck, of Keokuk and Steve Van Dever of Atlanta, Georgia; two step grandchildren, Brady Jones and Shannon Bolt; three great grandchildren, Jordan and Haley Fuller, and Matthew Schwiete; four step great grandchildren, Michael & Nicole Bolt and Timothy & Taisa Jones; three brothers, Raymond Walker and his wife, Rennah, of Washington, Wayne Walker and his wife, Nell of Washington, and Howard Walker and his wife, Barbara, of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers, Edward, Clyde, Fred and Calvin; and two sisters, Mabel in infancy and Ruth Washburn; a son, Gale; and a daughter, Carole Van Dever.

Services were Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Emmanuel Dass officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

A public Masonic Memorial service was held at DeJong's Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the donor's choice.

Esther Walker

Esther Carrollina Walker, 95, of Keokuk died Sunday, August 24, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at the Keokuk Nursing Center in Keokuk, Iowa.

Esther Walker was born icon on July 10, 1908 in Keokuk, the daughter of Lawrence and Josephine Berity Fletcher. She married icon William Marshall Walker on September 3, 1927 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on December 19, 1960. She had lived in Keokuk most of her life and before her marriage was employed at the Huiskamp Shoe Factory in production. She enjoyed crocheting lace edgings on pillowcases and tablecloths. She enjoyed watching boxing and wrestling on television. She was of the Protestant faith.

Survivors include a son, William “Bill” Walker of Keokuk; four daughters, Mary Rankin of Keokuk, Catherine Moore and her husband, Frank, of LaGrange, Missouri,Priscilla Walker of Keokuk and Sandra J. Walker of Keokuk; many grandchildren; d two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Ralph and Elmer Walker; a sister, Mary Crowell; and a brother, Ed Fletcher.

Services were Thursday, August 28, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

Charles Jess Vinzant

Charles Jess Vinzant, 76, of Holiday, Florida, died Friday, July 9, 2004 at Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Florida.

Charles Vinzant was born icon in Lineville, Iowa. He moved to Holiday, Florida in 1995 from Newton Falls, Ohio. He retired as the owner and operator of a steel mill in Youngstown, Ohio and was of the Presbyterian faith. He served as a staff sergeant with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. During his last years he devoted his time and energy by serving people through Alcoholics Anonymous. He had been clean and sober for thirty years. In his retirement, he worked almost fulltime serving folks at a support group center he founded in New Port Richey, Florida called “Tropical Attitudes” to serve people with other addictions besides alcoholism including overeating, drugs, gambling and others. There were three support group meetings daily, seven days a week at “Tropical Attitudes”. He was very focused on the spiritual aspects of the 12-step program.

Survivors include three sons, David Jess Vinzant of Wilmington, North Carolina, Steven Joel Vinzant of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and John Andrew Vinzant of Hermitage, Pennsylvania; two daughters, J. Patricia LiaBraaten of Keizer, Oregon and Susan Jane Vinzant of Jefferson, New Jersey; one sister, Hellen, of Humeston, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

There was a graveside service on Friday, August 6, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Michael Venning

Michael Joseph Venning, 48, of Keokuk died Tuesday, November 23, 2004 at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Michael Venning was born icon on May 5, 1956 in Miami, Florida. He was the son of Benjamin Dale and Barbara Jean Hyed (Correct spelling) Venning. He graduated from Coral Gables High School and attended Miami Dade Community College in Miami, Florida for one year. He was self-employed as a farmer. He was a former member of the Keokuk Elks Lodge, a member of the Keokuk Yacht Club, and a member of God’s Way Christian Center. He enjoyed gardening and giving the food he grew to people in the community. He was very passionate about his Christian beliefs.

Survivors include his mother, Barbara Venning of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Suzanne Nihill and her husband, Anthony, of Boise, Idaho and Bobbye McNish and her husband, David, of Keokuk, Iowa; one brother, Dale Venning and his wife, Cindy, of Ranchos Palos Verdes, California; his great aunt, Edith Denmire of Keokuk, Iowa; his uncle, Earl Hyed and four cousins of Atlanta, Georgia; six nieces; three nephews; and cousins, Barbara Babington and Helen Anderson of Keokuk, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Venning, one aunt, Martha Lee Venning, and one uncle, Frank Joseph Venning, Jr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 27, 2004 at 3:00 P.M. at God’s Way Christian Center in Keokuk with Reverend Sylvia Tillman officiating.

There will be no visitation.

The body will be cremated.

Memorials may be made to the God’s Way Christian Center, 1623 Des Moines Street, Keokuk, Iowa 52632. Memorials will be used to provide food for people in the community.

Vernon Varhus

Vernon Elliot Varhus, 90, of Keokuk, died June 14, 2003 at 3:15 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Vernon Varhus was born icon on June 27, 1912 in Lac Qui Parle County, Minnesota. He was the son of Peder and Sarah Egdahl Varhus. He grew up in Marietta, Minnesota, attended St. Olaf College and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1940. He married icon Enid Platts on June 9, 1944. She preceded him in death on February 26, 1998. He was employed by General Mills, Inc. for thirty-five years.

He worked as a layout engineer during the construction of the General Mills plant in Keokuk in 1942. He returned to Keokuk in 1952 as the Chief Plant Engineer, a position that he held until his retirement in 1976. After his retirement, he enjoyed working on his farm in Hancock County, Illinois. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk for over fifty years.

He is survived by loving members of his family; a daughter, Sara Varhus and husband, David Hill; two sons, Daniel Varhus and Mark Varhus and wife, Janet; and three grandchildren, Anna, Jacob, and Kjersti .

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, an infant son, two sisters, and one brother.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Reverend Don Rothweiler officiating.

The body was cremated.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, 11th and Blondeau Streets, Keokuk, Iowa, 52632.

Lucile Van Ausdall

Lucile E. Van Ausdall, 87, of Keokuk, died at 4:45 AM, Friday, August 15, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon April 22, 1916 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of John and Hilda Zimmer Johnson. She married icon Lloyd Van Ausdall on September 28, 1940 at Sandusky, Iowa. He survives.

She was the bookkeeper and worked in the parts department of Van Ausdall Implement Company for 30 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and had taught Sunday School. She has served as Cub Scout den mother for several years and as a Girl Scout leader. She liked to travel, especially in the mountains. She enjoyed cooking, growing flowers, and cats and dogs, but mostly loved being with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Van Ausdall of Keokuk; a daughter, Barbara Malone and her husband, Michael, of Winston, Missouri; two sons, John Van Ausdall of Keokuk and David Van Ausdall of California; three grandchildren, Brandon Van Ausdall, Kirt Malone and his wife, Debbie, and Kelley Uthe and her husband, Jerald; and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Funeral services were held Monday, August 18, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Rev. William Olmsted officiating. Burial was in Sandusky Cemetery in rural Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer’'s Association.

Dorothy Yarrington Valeu

Dorothy Yarrington Valeu, 85, of Keokuk, died at 5:29 PM Friday, October 3, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon October 2, 1918, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of George and Elsie Jones Montague. She married icon Marion Lee Yarrington in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1964. She married icon Arthur “Ray” Valeu on August 23, 1973. She was employed in the dietary department at Keokuk Area Hospital for 11 years, retiring at the age of 62. She was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of AARP. She loved to read a wide variety of books until she lost her eyesight. She loved and deeply cared for people she knew.

She is survived by two sons, Jerry W. Yarrington of Kansas City, Missouri and Ronald Yarrington of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters, Chris Denson of Springfield, Illinois and Kathy Joan Chatelain of Hamilton, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Brenda Yarrington, Becky Nelson, Tamara Mattingly, Matt Denson, Kevin Lorigan, Nicole Mason and Jess Carlton; twelve great grandchildren; and three sisters, Edna Kay of Keokuk, Marjorie Head of Hamilton, Illinois and Helen Boddy of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marion Yarrington; a sister, Catherine; and a special son-in-law, Arthur Chatelain.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 7, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Eugene Underwood

Eugene Underwood, 96, of 904 North 10th Street, Keokuk, died at 5:25 AM Friday, July 18, 2003, at Keokuk Nursing Center.

He was born icon October 29, 1906, near Wever, Iowa, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Underwood. He married icon Lucille C. Heberer on June 10, 1930 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She preceded him in death on January 26, 1993.

He had lived in Keokuk since 1932 and had been employed as a truck driver for H.B. Green in Burlington and then for Dohrn Transfer. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Odd Fellows and was a member of the Teamsters.

He was a baseball and basketball fan. He enjoyed working with his hand and fixing things such as cars, and refinishing and upholstering furniture. He took a walk everyday. He was a very giving person and would help anyone if possible, but especially his family.

He is survived by two sons, Dale Underwood and his wife, Mary Ann, of Keokuk and Galen Underwood and his wife, Marlene, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Arlene Underwood and her husband, Daniel Coffey, of Annandale, Virginia; twelve grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two sisters and six brothers.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William Olmsted officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’'s Disease Research.

H. Raymond Turner

H. Raymond Turner, 70, of Keokuk, formerly of Ft. Madison, died at 4:15 AM Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at his home.

He was born icon August 13, 1933 in Jacksonville, Illinois, to Vera Lartalla Turner. He married icon Sue Feser Boyd on August 23, 1971 at Ft. Madison, Iowa. She survives.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Before moving to Keokuk in 1987, he lived in Ft. Madison where he was self-employed doing auto body and fender work. He was a past member of the American Legion and V.F.W. in Ft. Madison. He was an avid fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Turner of Keokuk; four sons, LaVail Turner of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Kim Turner of Springfield, Illinois, Michael Turner of Jacksonville, Illinois and George Richard Altheide and his wife, Barbara Jo, of Keokuk; one daughter, Robin Woods and her husband, James, of Jacksonville, Illinois; eight grandchildren including Kody Kim Turner of Ft. Madison and Dionna Linn Turner of Rio, Illinois; four brothers, William Lee Bell of Decatur, Illinois, William Junior Bell of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Guy Bell of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Norman Bell of Ft. Madison, Iowa; two sisters, Nita Rice and her husband, Claude, of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Linda Bell of Ft. Madison, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steve Boyd.

Graveside services were held Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with Rev. Homer Brooks officiating. Military Rites were given by the American Legion and V.F.W. of Keokuk.
