Barbara Turley

Barbara Jo (Klinkhardt) Turley, 63, of Montrose, Iowa, died at 5:00 AM, Monday, June 6, 2005 at Keokuk Area Hospital. She fought long and hard but was unable to overcome the crippling effects of Multiple Sclerosis.

She was born icon on January 13, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee to Joseph and Irene Klinkhardt. She married icon William Breen Turley in August of 1968. He survives.

She received her high school education in Caruthersville, Missouri, graduating in 1959 and in 1964 graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau. In her early years she was employed as an executive secretary in Memphis, Tennessee, Chicago, Illinois and Keokuk. Later she was a housewife and devoted mother. She loved horses, enjoyed playing cards, was an avid reader, and approached life with a unique sense of humor.

Additional survivors include: a son, Stephen Turley and his wife, Erin, of Chicago, Illinois; three sisters; Marliss Back and her husband, Mike, of Cardwell, Missouri, Diana Klinkhardt and Ed Yellen of Wallingford, Pennsylvania and Debbie Manning and her husband, Charles, of Little Rock, Arkansas; two nephews and a niece, Scott Back and his wife, Melissa, of Cardwell, Missouri, Kelly Back and his wife, Alma, of San Francisco, California and Merit Manning of Little Rock, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Kenneth Klinkhardt; and an infant sister Louise Klinkhardt.

Memorial services were held Thursday, June 9, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home, with Deacon William Cosgrove officiating. friends following the services. The inurnment will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Keokuk Library Foundation, 210 N. Fifth Street, Keokuk, Iowa 52632.

Isaac E. "Pops" Tate, Jr.

Isaac Edward '“Pops”' Tate, Jr., 62, died Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at his residence in Keokuk, Iowa.

Isaac Tate was born icon on April 12, 1941 in Lewis County, Missouri. He was the son of Isaac and Liza Mariata Dade Tate, Sr. He had lived in Davenport, Iowa for forty years and had been employed as a welder. He had lived in Keokuk the last two years. He served with the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed fishing, playing pool, and bingo.

Survivors include eight children, Barbara Ann Hatfield of Keokuk, Iowa, Ray Anthony Tate of Alexandria, Missouri, Emma Marie Tate, Valerie Elaine Tate, Isaac Junior Tate, Wallace O. Crouch Tate, Vanessa Tate, and Anthony Isaac Tate; one sister, Katherine M. Hodges, of Canton, Missouri; five grandchildren, Colby Tate, Jordan Tate, Tyler Hatfield, Erika Hatfield, and Layke Hatfield; nieces; nephews; and friends of the family including Ellen Tate of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wilbur and Isaac’s twin Julian; and two sisters, Mary Lou and Doris Marie.

Services were Monday, March 22, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Sylvia Tillman officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Timothy Stinson

Timothy Mark Stinson, 33, of Keokuk, died Sunday evening, May 2, 2004, in an auto accident in rural Keokuk, Iowa.

He was born icon January 2, 1971, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of William Henry and Dolores Ann Mann Stinson. He had lived in Keokuk all his life and had been employed by JMH Construction Company. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, football and baseball.

He is survived by his mother, Dolores A. Stinson of Keokuk; twelve siblings, Robert Stinson of Knoxville, Iowa, Roseann Bringer and her husband, Michael, of Canton, Missouri, William Henry Stinson, Jr. of New Port Richey, Florida, David Stinson of Keokuk, Debra Bowden and her husband, Rick, of Revere, Missouri, Randy Stinson of Keokuk, Sheila Knopp and her husband, William, of Troy, Missouri, George Stinson of Keokuk, Scott Stinson of Keokuk, James Stinson and his wife, Angela, of Keokuk, Raymond Stinson and his wife, Lori, of Hamilton, Illinois, and Aggie Stinson of Keokuk; special friend Kim Touhey of Keokuk; 34 nieces and nephews; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents Horace and Pansy Mann and Arthur and Elizabeth Stinson; uncles Pete Mann and Robert Wm. Stinson; nephew Kelly Stinson; niece Misty Bringer; and cousin Todd Hawley.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Charles R. "Buck" Stephenson

Charles R. “'Buck'” Stephenson, 70, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at 11:35 A.M. at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Charles Stephenson was born icon on April 6, 1934 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of James and Bessie Canada Stephenson. He married icon Ruth Darlene Hamburger in August 1954. She preceded him in death in 1981. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed in production at Keokuk Steel Castings and later at BTR Sealing Systems. He loved fishing, bowling, and playing musical instruments. He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include five children, Robert Stephenson and his wife, Lorie, of Iowa City, Iowa, Mike Stephenson and his wife, Faye, of Kahoka, Missouri, Joe Stephenson of Kahoka, Missouri, Julia McLeod and her husband, Stephen, of Keokuk, Iowa, and David Stephenson and his wife Sabina, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; one sister, Shirley Nye, of Keokuk, Iowa; and ten grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one sister; and one daughter.

At Mr. Stephenson’s request, there were no visitation or services. His body has been donated to the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa.

Ida P. "Sis" Steele

Ida '“Sis'” Pauline Steele, 74, of Keokuk, died Thursday, March 4, 2004 at 11:02 P.M. at Lexington Square in Keokuk, Iowa.

Ida Steele was born icon on September 21, 1929, in Hamilton, Illinois. She was the daughter of Alviris J. and Bessie Blanch Slater Land. She was first married icon to Joseph Benedict. She later married icon Eugene Hall. She then married icon Donald Steele and he preceded her in death on October 17, 1991. She had been a lifelong resident of Keokuk and was a member of New Testament Christian Church. She had been employed at Drydens, 6 to 6 Café, Harrington’s Lounge, the Grand Lunch, and at Bing’s Cab. She loved to sew, and being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved to travel.

Survivors include her children, Nettie Dunne and her husband, Tom, of Galesburg, Illinois, Alice Hall of Keokuk, Iowa, Wayne Hall of Augusta, Iowa, Robert Hall and his wife, Becky, of Iowa City, Iowa, Ivy Benedict and her husband, Dan, of Galesburg, Illinois, Allen Hall and his wife, Sandy, of Keokuk, Iowa, Jody DeLonjay and her husband, Jeff, of Quincy, Illinois, Donald Steele of Sandstone, Minnesota, James Steel of Keokuk, Iowa, Donna Morris and her husband, Jay, of California, and Bryan Steele of Arkansas; twenty-seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don Steele; six brothers, Augustus, Alva, Jessie, William, George, and Thomas; and four sisters, Sara, Jennie, Viola, and Goldie.

Services were Monday, March 8, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Lee County Hospice or Lexington Square Center.

Marie L. Stark

Marie Lottie Thompson Stark, 78, of Keokuk, died Friday afternoon, June 25, 2004 at her home in Keokuk, Iowa.

She was born icon October 5, 1925, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Winslow Chesterfield and Mable Clark Thompson. She married icon Lloyd Eugene Stark on March 26, 1943 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 18, 1997. She was a member of New Testament Christian Church and had been a member of the Eagles Auxiliary for many years.

Her family was special to her. She loved her children and the time she spent with them and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had two special friends, Viki Hymes and Bertha Nichols. He interests were planting flowers, putting in a large vegetable garden and canning everything, yard sales, playing Bingo, taking long walks and picnics.

Her survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Stark at home, Anna Russell and her husband, Harry, of Keokuk, and Virginia “Kathy” Gibert and her husband, Jim, of Argyle, Iowa; two sons, Roy Stark and his wife, Karen, of Ormond Beach, Florida and Ronnie Stark and his wife, Dorothy “Marcy”, of Osceola, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Ronald Eugene Stark, Harold Eugene Russell, Teresa Marie Russell, Candy Sue Stark Counts, Malinda Jean Russell, Carol Sue Holmes, Dollie Jean Holmes Briggs, Regina Carol Stark Brown, Paxton Wade Stark, Owen Travis Stark; thirteen great-grandchildren, Casandra Brown, Andrew Russell, Kurtis Russell, Kristin Russell, Tony Kunkel Jr., Brittany Kunkel, Jeremy Lee Turner, Justin James Turner. Terry Allen Briggs III, Brandi Rae Briggs, Randy Stark, Sabrina Stark and Jason McKinley; one brother, Winnie Thompson; two sisters, Eudora Lawson and Mildred Burgess; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Ruby Daughters and her husband, Clifford “Lefty” Daughters; a brother-in-law, Carl J. Stark and three sisters-in-law, Ada Conover Ina Buikema, Helen Wilson and Louise Thompson.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 29, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Abegglen officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’'s Foundation.

James B. Smith

James Burrows Smith, 64, of Wabasha, Minnesota and formerly of Keokuk, died Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 10:43 A.M. at the St. Elizabeth’s Health Care Center in Wabasha, Minnesota.

James Smith was born icon on March 31, 1940 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Ralph B. and Anna Hemmy Smith. He married icon Maxine Smith on June 15, 1964. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa Physical Therapy Program. He had been employed as a physical therapist at Graham Hospital and then at Keokuk Area Hospital. For twenty-three years until his retirement in August 2003 he had been self-employed as a physical therapist. He had lived in Keokuk for his entire life until moving to Minnesota one year ago. He was a member of All Saints Church in Keokuk, was a member of the Keokuk Rotary, served as a city council alderman for seventeen years, and was a forty-year member of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Survivors include three children, Julie Bashore of Rochester, Minnesota, Kathy Leggett of Des Moines, Iowa, and Justin Smith of Somerset, New Jersey; his mother, Anna Smith, of Keokuk, Iowa; one brother, Jack Smith, of Keokuk, Iowa; five grandchildren; and his ex-wife, Maxine Smith.

He was preceded in death by his father, R. Buell Smith and his grandparents.

A memorial service was held Friday, January 21, 2005 at All Saints Church in Keokuk with Reverend Paul Connolly officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Lee County Historical Society.

James L. Smith

James L. Smith, 69, of Johnson Street Road, Keokuk died at 2:50 AM Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at his home.

He was born icon June 20, 1934 in Midland, Michigan, the son of William and Ruth Bristol Smith. He married icon Rosa Ann Briggs on May 23, 1953 in Hardy, Arkansas. He farmed all his life and worked for 38 ˝ years at Shellor-Globe, retiring in 1996. He was a member of First Christian Church of Keokuk, the Eagles, and Southside Boat Club. He liked to fish and hunt.

He is survived by four sons, James W. Smith and his wife, Bonnie, of Camp Point, Illinois, Larry Smith and his wife, Susan of St. Francisville, Missouri, Joe Smith and his wife, Mary, of Keokuk, Iowa and William Mann of Altoona, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Misty Smith, Christopher Smith, Tanya Branson, Brandy Smith, Scott Smith, Bill Mann, Kim Mann-Pfaff; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Shaney and her husband, Jim, of Donna, Texas, Darlene Lillie and her husband, Obert, of Keokuk and Jane Newton and her husband, George, Of Williamsburg, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a brother.

Graveside services were held Thursday, October 16, 2003, at Sand Cemetery at St. Francisville, Missouri, with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating.

Memorials may be made for the family.

Douglas E. Shaul

Douglas Eugene Shaul, 50, of Keokuk, died at 6:30 PM, Friday, February 27, 2004, at his home.

He was born icon July 12, 1953 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Maurice E. and Beverly Ann Peterson Shaul. He was married icon to Cindy Pruitt. He married icon Paula Henson Bode on December 8, 1999 in Keokuk, Iowa. She survives.

Mr. Shaul was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1971. He served in the United States Navy during the Viet Nam Conflict. He was employed by Electro-Metals and Ferro-Sill for 21 years. He was a member of First Lutheran Church; Boy Scouts of America and later the Explorer Group; and the YMCA where he enjoyed playing volleyball and softball. During his military service he played on Navy volleyball, softball and football teams.

He is survived by his wife, Paula Shaul of Keokuk; a daughter, Claira Cannon of Keokuk; stepson, Brian Bode and his wife, Amy, and stepdaughter, Melissa Bode, both of Keokuk; four step grandchildren, Bailey, Kerrigan Logan & Jayme Bode; his father, Maurice Shaul of Zellwood, Florida; a brother, Dennis Shaul and his wife, Becky, of Keokuk; three aunts, Janet Donahue of Keokuk, Carolyn Johnson of Chicago, Illinois and Sharon Everle of Ursa, Illinois; two nephews, Derek & Damon Shaul; half-brother, Maurice Shaul, Jr. and half sister, Karen Shaul; stepbrother, John Callahan, and two stepsisters, Phyllis Roberts & Debbie Liddicoat; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents and an aunt.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 3, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Fran Griffeth officiating. Burial with full military rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Keokuk.

Leon Sharp

Leon E. Sharp, 88, of Keokuk, died Thursday, September 09, 2004 at 7:45 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Leon Sharp was born icon on August 27, 1916 in Duncan, Oklahoma. He was the son of Jess and Opal Searight Sharp. He married icon Korine Bevering in 1948. She preceded him in death in 1985. He had lived in Keokuk since 1936. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a Master Sergeant with the 38th Field Artillery Battalion. He was the owner/operator of Sharp Motors, Inc. for many years, which specialized in the sale of Mercury, Lincoln, and Ford automobiles. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Keokuk

Survivors include a brother, John Sharp, of Oregon; a nephew, Ken Bevering and his wife, Carol, of Keokuk, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Nadine, of Mishawaka, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Graveside services were Monday, September 13, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery with Reverend Keith Percell officiating. Burial followed the service.

The family has requested no flowers; however, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Gladys Schwiete

Gladys M. Schwiete, 77 of Keokuk died Friday, March 21, 2003 at 4:55 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Gladys Schwiete was born icon on September 2, 1925 in Canton, Missouri. She was the daughter of G. Nelson and Erma Chappins Ealy, and the step-daughter of Hazel Strange Ealy. She married icon John J. Schwiete. He preceded her on January 3, 1987. She was employed in production at General Mills and the Iowa Aluminum Plant. She was a member of the Moose Club Chapter 504 of Kahoka, Missouri and was a College Regent which is the highest degree in the local auxillary. She was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Auxillary and had served as President. She was a member of Keokuk Eagles #683. She was a past Commander of D.A.V. and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include three sons, John K. Schwiete of Keokuk, Randy E. Schwiete and his wife, Andrea, of Keokuk, Ricky A. Schwiete of Keokuk; one brother, W. Lank Ealy of Florida; three nieces; two nephews; one half-brother, Daryl Ealy of Ft. Madison, Iowa; and two stepsisters, Eunice Jenson of Keokuk and Donna Wycoff of Bondurant, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her stepmother.

Services were Monday, March 24, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Terry Lovell officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Dr. Harold Schwarz

Dr. Harold G. Schwarz, 87, former Keokuk Podiatrist, died at his home at 4:30 AM Saturday, May 3, 2003.

He was born icon on August 15, 1915 in Keokuk to Albert and Alice Thorp Schwarz. He married icon Bette on May 27, 1960 at the Baptist Church in Carthage, Illinois. She survives.

Additional survivors are two sons, David E. Schwarz and his wife, Marlene, of Keokuk and Craig A. Schwarz and his wife, Debra, of Howell, Michigan; granddaughter, Kimberly Schwarz of San Diego, California and grandsons, Jeffrey Schwarz of Ames, Iowa, Craig A. Schwarz Jr. & Todd Schwarz of Howell, Michigan; sister-in-law, Marian Schwarz of Keokuk; faithful niece & nephew, Roberta & Lyndle Bitting and other niece and nephews, Roger & Katie Davis and Phil Davis.

Dr. Schwarz was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

He graduated from Keokuk High School and from the Illinois College of Podiatry and Foot Surgery in 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He opened his office in the Grand Hotel building and later the Dorsey Medical Building. He was honored by the American Podiatry Medical Association at Des Moines in 1989 for 50 years of practice and service to the local community. Dr. Schwarz was in practice for 57 years. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Kappa Fraternity and was a 50-year member of the Apollo Council, Damascus Commandry, Keokuk Lodge #29, Gate City Chapter 7 and Secretary-Treasurer of High Twelve.

Dr. Schwarz served as District Chairman of the Southeastern Iowa Council of Boy Scouts of America, president of the Hawthorne School PTA, president of the First Lutheran Church Council and membership chairman of the YMCA. He was involved in numerous civic activities and was an avid handball and racquetball player. He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Funeral services were held May 8, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Keokuk or to the Hoerner Y.
