Donald "Don" W. Schwab

Donald '“Don”' W. Schwab, 43, of Alexandria, Missouri, died Sunday, August 22, 2004 at 7:11 P.M. at his home.

Donald Schwab was born icon on October 22, 1960 in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the son of Duane and Hilda Perrin Schwab. He married icon Lynn Bolanos on November 25, 1995, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She survives. He had lived in Alexandria, Missouri since 1999 and had been employed as a laborer in steel mills. He was a member of the Alexandria Baptist Church and had attended the Wayland Baptist Church. He was a member of the Transverse Myelitis Association and the Commission of the Blind. When able, he worked on small motors and loved animals.

Survivors include his wife, Lynn Schwab, of Alexandria, Missouri; two sons, Timothy Schwab and his wife, Kristen, of Naples, Texas and Shawn Schwab of Kerrville, Texas; two brothers, Duane L. Schwab of Brownwood, Texas and Johnny Schwab of Brownwood, Texas; two sisters, Sherilyn Tomme of Brownwood, Texas and Bonnie Wallace of Comanche, Texas; his parents, Duane F. and Nancy Schwab, and Hilda Schwab, all of Brownwood, Texas; his mother-in-law, Jeannette Bolanos, of Kentucky; his father-in-law. Roger L. Christy and his wife, Patty, of Alexandria, Missouri; four sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; his grandmother-in-law, Bernice Christy, of Keokuk, Iowa; and his uncle, Jerry Schwab and his wife, Dorothy, of Keota, Iowa.

Graveside services were Thursday, August 26, 2004 at the Argyle Memorial Park in Argyle, Iowa with Reverend Ken Barlow officiating. Burial followed the service.

A memorial has been established.

Dorothy Lee Schulz

Dorothy Lee Schulz, 79, of Keokuk, Iowa died Thursday, November 18, 2004 at 11:25 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

She was born icon September 16, 1925 in Keokuk, the daughter of Leroy and Dorothy Leone Carmichael Schulz. She lived in Keokuk most of her life except for a short time in Ft. Madison. She was employed as an operator for Northwestern Bell Telephone for 31 years and later worked at Stan’s Bakery.

She was a very active member of First Christian Church in Keokuk and attended Bible Study and Mary’s Sunday School Class. She was a people-person and enjoyed sending many get well and happy greeting cards. She was a member of Pythian Sisters.

She is survived by three brothers, Wayne (Patricia) Schulz of Walla Walla, Washington, Donald (Shirley) Schulz of Agency, Iowa and Roger (Carolyn) Schulz of Keokuk; eight nieces and nephews, Lori (Ken) Farmer of Greenwater, Washington, Eric (Susan) Schulz of Walla Walla, Washington, Jeffrey Schulz of Agency, Iowa, Brenda (Dusty) Taylor of Selma, Iowa, Julie (Randy) Robertson of Hedrick, Iowa, Dennis (Joan) Schulz of Pacific, Missouri, Debra (Richard) Carlton of Keokuk and Cindy (Bob) Sturm of Keokuk; sixteen great nieces and nephews; and two special cousins, Michael Wilhelm of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Stanley (Doris) Wilhelm of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday November 22, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church Building Fund.

Hilda Schevers

Hilda Lucille Schevers, 82, of Donnellson, Iowa and formerly of the Keokuk and Montrose area, died Monday, June 16, 2003 at 5:18 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Hilda Schevers was born icon on August 17, 1920 in Keokuk. She was the daughter of George and Bertha Derr Holmes. She married icon David A. Schevers on September 16, 1936 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on December 26, 1982. She had lived in the Keokuk and Montrose area most of her life and had lived in Donnellson for the past three years. She was a homemaker and also helped her husband on their farm. She was of the Baptist faith.

Her family was always the joy and purpose of her life. Her wonderful laughter, sense of humor, and wit were her gifts shared by all that knew her and love her. She was known to say, “Check the crops and watch out for the deer” when her visitors were leaving her home.

She was the mother of a son, David W. Schevers and his wife, Jane, of West Point, Iowa; and two daughters, Sandra L. Junkins of Donnellson, Iowa and Marilyn “Sally” Junkins of Dallas, Texas. She was the grandmother of Erin, Ryan, Casey, Jeff, Lisa, Kirsten, and Karen; and great-grandmother of Hailey, Ashley, Jennifer, Andrew, Katie, David, and Patrick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, and three sisters.

Graveside services were held Thursday, June 19, 2003 at at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with Reverend Preston Smith officiating. Burial followed the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Montrose Volunteer Fire Department, Montrose, Iowa, 52639.

John W. Sammons

John W. Sammons, 85, of Keokuk, died Sunday, August 24, 2003 at Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama.

John Sammons was born icon on December 11, 1917 in Hancock County, Illinois. He was the son of Oliver and Mary Setser Sammons. He married icon Jeanette Ragar on February 27, 1939 in Palmyra, Missouri. She survives. He was a longtime resident of Keokuk. In 1956 he founded and was the owner/operator of John W. Sammons Construction Company. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Keokuk. He was also a member of the Business Men’s Full Gospel Fellowship. He was a member of the American Rifle Association, Keokuk Lodge #29, A.F. & A. M., and was a past Scoutmaster of Scout Troop #69 of the First Lutheran Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved being outdoors. He enjoyed trapshooting with a gun club on his farms, and enjoyed flying and having his pilot’s license. For the last thirty years, he and his wife, Jeanette, traveled the world to various places where their daughter and son-in-law lived while his son-in-law was stationed with the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Sammons, of Keokuk; children, Dolly White and her husband, Harold, of Keokuk, John D. Sammons and his wife, Bonny, of Keokuk, Michael D. Sammons and his wife, Kathryn, of Keokuk, and Nancy R. Holland and her husband, Charles, of Tampa, Florida; eight grandsons; three granddaughters; and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers, Keith and Orville; a brother, Russell Sammons; and one grandson.

Service were Friday, August 29, 2003 at the First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Reverend Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church of Keokuk.

Lois Jean Roth

Lois Jean Roth, 75, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Sunday, February 15, 2004 at 7:49 P.M. at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Lois Roth was born icon on November 26, 1928 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of Asa C. and Malinda Elizabeth Deck Dennison. She married icon Joe Roth. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed for many years until her retirement in 1997 with Home Health Care of Lee County, Iowa. She had attended Crossview Fellowship and enjoyed her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Campbell and her husband, Ed, of Keokuk, Iowa; three grandsons, Mark Campbell of Coralville, Iowa, Matt Campbell and his wife, Heather, of Keokuk, Iowa, and Jon Campbell and his wife, Chrissy, of Keokuk, Iowa; a sister, Colleen Williams and her husband, Russell, of Hamilton, Illinois; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and two brothers.

Graveside services were Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Sand Cemetery in St. Francisville, Missouri with Reverend Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial followed the service.

Franklin E. "Frank" Rose

Franklin E. “'Frank'” Rose, 76, of Keokuk, died at 5:40 PM Friday, August 13, 2004, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born icon April 21, 1928 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Omer F. and Bessie J Busby Rose. He married icon Bertie Power on November 10, 1945 in Troy, Kansas. She survives. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He lived in Keokuk most of his life with the exception of a few years living in Canton, Illinois. His employment included working in construction and delivering soft beverages for many years. He was an Honorary Lifetime member of the Loyal Order of Moose, a member of American Legion Post #41 and a member of Truth for the Day. His hobbies included playing guitar, singing, visiting with friends at McDonald’s, camping, being outdoors, bowling and riding horses. His greatest joy was being with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Bertie of Keokuk; five children, Diana Miler and her husband, Bill, of Solon, Iowa, Gary Rose and his wife, Claudia, of Keokuk, Julia Buschling and her husband, Steven, of Canton, Missouri, Cheryl Harrison and her husband, George, of Montrose, Iowa and Jay Rose of Fort Worth, Texas; twelve grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Andrews Wilson of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis; a grandson, Jeffrey; six sisters, a brother; and two siblings in infancy.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Burial with Military Rites was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to American Legion Post #41.

Willa Rooney

Willa L. Rooney, 80, of Keokuk, died Sunday, December 5, 2004 at 3:45 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Willa Rooney was born icon on April 12, 1924 in Revere, Missouri. She was the daughter of Eugene and Verna Dorothy White. She married icon John W. Rooney, Jr. on August 31, 1947 in Palmyra. Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2003. She had lived in Keokuk since 1947 and before her marriage had been employed at The Huiskamp Shoe Factory and at Sheaffer Pen in Ft. Madison. She was co-owner of a grocery store and gas station. Later in life she had been employed at the Clark Nursing Home. She was very involved with her family and loved watching her grandchildren participating in sports and other activities. She loved to quilt and fish, enjoyed traveling and doing word find puzzles.

Survivors include a daughter, Penny Martin and her husband, Dennis of Keokuk, Iowa; three grandchildren, Zachary, Kayla, and Kelsey Martin; a brother, Don White and his wife, Verna of Keokuk, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, including Dearld Clark of Keokuk, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Bobby White and Dearld White, and a sister, Nina Clark.

Graveside services were be Thursday, December 9, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk with Reverend Brian Rihner officiating. Burial followed the service.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Little League.

Sheila Roberts

Sheila Carol Roberts, 67, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Thursday, October 7, 2004 at 6:45 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Sheila Robert was born icon on January 11, 1937 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of Albert “Bud” and Meda Mathis Morgan. She had live in Keokuk for most of her life and had been employed as a registered nurse at Keokuk Area Hospital until 1997. She was active in the Mississippi Terrace Association and was the secretary of the Tenants Association. She enjoyed playing cards and pool.

Survivors include her daughter, Andrea Larson, of Keokuk, Iowa; a granddaughter, Haylee Larson, of Keokuk, Iowa; four brothers and sisters, William “Bill” Kayser of Keokuk, Iowa, Mike Morgan and his wife, Esta, of Hamilton, Illinois, Becky Long and her husband, Lowell, of Keokuk, Iowa, and Joe Morgan and his wife, Sue, of Keokuk, Iowa; nieces and nephews, Karla Bevard, Kevin Kayser, Brian Long, Mark Long, Joshua, and Morgan, Dyan Morgan; and her special friend, Joyce Aldridge, of Winchester, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Shirley Kayser; a brother, Jerry Morgan; one niece, Judy Kayser; and a nephew, William “Billy” Kayser, Jr.

A celebration of life service was held Saturday, October 16, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.

The body has been donated to medical science.

Memorials may be made to the Mississippi River Terrace Tenants Association.

Dorothy Riter

Dorothy Darlene Riter, 76, of Keokuk, died at 5:50 PM Friday, November 21, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon February 5, 1927 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the daughter of Archie J. and Beulah Phillips Kimes. She married icon Herman H. Riter, Jr. on May 11, 1946, in Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1987. She had lived in Keokuk most of her life. She had worked for Dr. Ambery when she was young.

She had been a member of Second Presbyterian Church and later became a member of United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk. She had been very active in Graham Hospital Guild and the gift shop, serving as a volunteer and assistant buyer for the gift shop. She was also involved in Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary and Ladies of the Elks. She was a good cook.

She is survived by five children, Nancy Miller and her husband, Mike, of Dallas, Texas, Stephen Herman Riter and his wife, Jane, of Keokuk, Judy Lovell and her husband, Jerry, of Washington, Illinois; Susan Grover and her husband, Jim, of Sioux City, Iowa and Karla Riter of Washington, Illinois; twelve grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and her mother, Beulah Roberts of Green Springs, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; beloved stepfather, Niles Belt; a sister, Dolores L. Benjamin; and a great granddaughter, Katelyn Grover.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 25, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery following the service.

Memorials may be made to United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk or to Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary.

Kathryn Riley

Kathryn Hellyer Riley, 93, of Keokuk, died on Friday, September 3, 2004 at Keokuk Area Hospital following a brief illness.

She was born icon on November 11, 1910 at Farber, Missouri, the daughter of Lewis E. and Sophronia C. Gertz Hellyer. After graduating from Middletown (Missouri) High School, she began her career as a teacher in a one-room school.

While attending summer school at Northeast Missouri State Teachers College to earn her teaching credentials, she met John W. Riley. They were married icon in Kirksville, Missouri on October 20, 1932. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1993.

John and Kathryn moved to Keokuk in the early 1940’s when John began teaching at junior high. Kathryn taught at and later became the principal of the Alexandria, Missouri Elementary School. She then taught at Argyle and Montrose schools and completed 20 years of service as a junior high math teacher for the Central Lee Community School District.

Kathryn was personally interested in every student she taught. More important than the subjects she taught, she guided her students to develop their sense of personal worth and self-esteem.

While teaching full time, she attended night classes at Carthage College. She received her Bachelor’s degree, and graduated at the last commencement ceremony held on the Carthage, Illinois campus.

Kathryn Riley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. While her family always came first, she unselfishly helped many others throughout her life.

Survivors include her two sons: Don and his wife Debbie of Chattanooga, Tennessee, formerly of Keokuk, and Richard and his wife Mary Margaret of San Marcos, Texas; four grandchildren – Mark Riley and his wife Deb and daughter Katie of Independence, Missouri; Matthew and his wife Teri and son Landon of Bakersfield, California; Sarai Riley Underwood and her husband Mike and son Riley of Olathe, Kansas; and Laura Riley Schooler and her husband Joe and son Isaac and daughter Fiona of Round Rock, Texas.

Kathryn was a member of the Keokuk United Presbyterian Church for over 60 years where she served as a Deacon and an Elder. She also served on the Ministerial Relations Committee of the East Iowa Presbytery. She was a 50 year member of Chapter U, P.E.O.; member and past president of Alpha Epsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; former member of the American Association of University Women; a 50 year member and past worthy matron of Elmira Chapter #40, Order of Eastern Star; a 50 year member and past worthy high priestess of Malta Shrine #12, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem; and member of Pyramid Temple #10, Daughters of the Nile. She was a lifetime member of the Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association.

On Thursday, September 9th, a funeral service was held at the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery.
