Floyd Riddle

Floyd Alex Riddle, 72, of Keokuk, died at 12:19 AM, Saturday, September 18, 2004 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born icon September 9, 1932 in Sandusky, Iowa, the son of Alex E. and Elizabeth Webber Riddle. He was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk and Montrose area. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He had been employed in production at Keokuk Steel Castings and had also run Riddle Repair in Alexandria, Missouri. He was a past member of the B.P.O. Elks, the Southside Boat Club and American Legion. He loved to fish, hunt and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He is survived by children, Cindy Schneider and her husband, Steve, of Montrose, Iowa, Randy Riddle and his wife, Kim, of Montrose, Larry Riddle of Keokuk, Gary Riddle of Keokuk, Doug Smith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Brenda Hanna of Aurora, Colorado and Brad Bruns of Springdale, Arkansas; stepdaughters, April Wilkens and Tina Stott; twenty grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; two sisters; daughter, Angie Smith; daughter-in-law, Lynne Riddle; and his special friend, Colleen LeMaster.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 21, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial with full Military Rites was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established.

Gladys L. Richardson

Gladys L. Richardson, 95, of Keokuk and formerly of Hamilton, Illinois, Iowa died Monday, April 07, 2003 at 6:04 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Gladys Richardson was born icon on November 1, 1907 in Waterloo, Iowa. She was the daughter of Donald R. and Margaret M. Bechler Witt. She married icon P. Dale Richardson on December 26, 1932 in Warsaw, Illinois. He preceded her in death on December 8, 2001. She attended schools and college in South Dakota and Illinois. She was a retired schoolteacher. She attended the United Methodist Church in Basco and Hamilton, Illinois.

Survivors include a daughter, Carrol L. Thurman and her husband, Bud, of Warsaw, Illinois; two sons, Warren Richardson and wife, Elke, of Nuremberg, Germany and Rolland L. Richardson and wife, Karen, of Waukegan, Illinois; three grandsons, Robert N. Thurman of Warsaw, Illinois, Ian Richardson of Nuremberg, Germany, and Jeffrey L. Richardson of Waukegan, Illinois; three granddaughters, Audrey C. Meade of New London, Iowa, Andrea Y. Richardson of Nuremberg, Germany, and Amy E. Jamison of Wauconda, Illinois; and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son; two sisters; and one grandson.

Graveside services were Thursday, April 10, 2003 at South Basco Cemetery in Basco, Illinois with Reverend Craig Burton officiating.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Arthur Rice

Arthur LeRoy Rice, 86, of Keokuk, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Arthur Rice was born icon on July 19, 1918 in Ontario, California. He was the son of Charles E. and Minnie Anita Hedding Rice. He married icon Frances E. Stice on July 1, 1946 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. She preceded him in death on September 28, 1993. He moved to Keokuk in 1951 from Kahoka, Missouri and had been employed as a salesperson for Jemison Chevrolet and McCredie Motors. He later picked up cars for Shottenkirks. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, was a past member of the Keokuk Moose Club and the American Legion Post #41, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Greensburg, Missouri. He enjoyed stock car racing, going to casinos, and was a people person.

Survivors include two sons, Richard E. Thompson and his wife, Carolyn, of Manchester, Iowa and James L. Thompson of Grand Island, Nebraska; one daughter, Linda Sue Kline of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandsons, Rick and Mike Thompson of Manchester, Iowa and Greg Thompson of St. Louis, Missouri; one granddaughter, Teresa Micek and her husband, Tim, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and his grandmother who raised him after his mother’s death.

Graveside services were Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 2:00 P.M. at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites and Reverend Jack Spratte officiating. Burial followed the service.

Visitation was Monday, February 21, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk from 6-8 P.M. with the family meeting friends during that time.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk.

Margaret Louise Pitts

Margaret Louise Pitts, 87, of Lockwood, Missouri, died Tuesday, MArch 11, 2003 at Lamar, Missouri.

She was born icon on July 18, 1915 in Keokuk, the daughter of Albert Ferdinand and Anna Reimers Fiedler. Following her parents' death, she was raised from a young age by her aunt, Mary Knight. She married icon G. Herold Pitts on March 23, 1947 in Keokuk. He preceded her on December 28, 1978. During her young years in Keokuk she was a member of First Christian Church and was employed at the pickle factory until it closed. She was an accountant for the state of Michigan. She raised cats.

Survivors include her nieces, Debra Shore and her husband, John, of Annapolis, MAryland, Milia Engelage and her husband, Danny, of Lockwood, Missouri, and Sandra Anthony and her husband, Gary, of Dallas, Texas; a nephews, Doug Fielder and his wife, Billie, of Kansas City, Missouri;a sister-in-law, Lora Fiedler of Dallas, Texas; several great nieces; and seven great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Dr. William A. Fiedler; and an aunt, Mary Knight.

Mary Phillips

Mary E. Phillips, 92, of Montrose, Iowa, died at 5:50 PM Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon August 22, 1911, in Virginia, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Edward and Eva Lena McGovern Davis. She married icon Dallas Tone Phillips on December 11, 1936, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1979.

She lived in Ft. Madison until moving to Montrose in 1936. Before marrying, she was employed at Sheaffer Pen in Ft. Madison. She later worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as Montrose Postmaster. She was a member of Montrose United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served as treasurer for many years. She was a member of Martha Chapter #5, Order of the Eastern Star in Montrose for over 50 years and was a past officer and secretary. She was a member of the Garden Club and volunteered at the Bloodmobile. She crocheted many gifts and items for her church bazaar.

She is survived by a son, Richard “Dick” Phillips and his wife, Cecelia, of Kirksville, Missouri; two granddaughters, Teresa Phillips of St. Louis, Missouri and Rochelle Martens and her husband, Tom, of Kirksville, Missouri; a great granddaughter, Shelbie Baumgartner of Kirksville, Missouri; two step great grandchildren, Kevin & Kelby Martens of Kirksville, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Carl and Harry Davis; and a sister, Gladys Nuebel.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Montrose United Methodist Church with Rev. Elliott George officiating. Burial was in Montrose Cemetery following the services.

An Eastern Star Memorial Service was held at 10:00 AM Wednesday immediately prior to the funeral service.

Memorials may be made to Montrose United Methodist Church or American Heart Association.

Blanche Peek

Blanche Elizabeth Peek, 91, of Keokuk, died at 11:30 PM Friday, August 22, 2003, at Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose, Iowa.

She was born icon September 8, 1911 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred H. and Ethel Phoebe Howren Tucker. She married icon Edward Rolland Waller who preceded her in death. She married icon Wesley Clinton Peek on June 16, 1962 at Winter Haven, California. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1994.

She lived all he life in Keokuk and graduated from Keokuk Senior High School in 1930. She was a homemaker but was briefly employed by the Eppers Hotel. She volunteered her time for Lincoln School, P.T.A. and fundraising musicals. She was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk.

She is survived by a son, Terry E. Waller of Keokuk; a brother, Richard A. Tucker of Burlington, Iowa; six grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and sixteen great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; a daughter, Betty Laverna Waller Crowell; sisters, Emma Golliher and Elsie Barrett; and two great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 26, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Iowa Department of the Blind or Alzheimers Association.

Catherine H. Parrack

Catherine Henrietta Parrack, 80, of Keokuk, died Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Catherine Parrack was born icon on July 13, 1923 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Aliwishis F. and Margaret Drothagen Fritz. She married icon Donald Lee Parrack on March 18, 1957 in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 13, 1998. She had been employed at the Hall Nursing Home in Quincy, the Paper Box Office in Quincy, and had been a cook and waitress at Stipp’s in Quincy. She was also a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk and had also been attending Crossview Fellowship.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Starks and her husband, Robert, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, Barbara Ann Beaty and her husband, Rick, of Rushville, Illinois, Donna Belle Parrack and her friend, Roger Lauderback, of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; one son, David Thomas Parrack of Mt. Sterling, Illinois; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Janet Marie; three brothers; and one sister.

Services was Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Terry Lovell officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the family.

Betty Margaret Oliver

Betty M. “Grammy” Oliver, 85 of Keokuk, died at 6:30 AM, Sunday, December 05, 2004 at her home.

Betty was born icon October 17, 1919 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Harry A. and Grace E. Whiting Duncan. She married icon John H. Oliver on January 31, 1944. He preceded her in death. She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1937. She attended Iowa State Teachers College and was a member of Alpha Beta Gamma Sorority. Betty taught school in Farrar, Iowa, and later worked as a social worker in Lee County, Iowa.

Betty served in many community organizations including; Board of Directors of YMCA, President of Graham Hospital Auxiliary, Deacon and Elder of United Presbyterian Church, and was active in the women’s’ organization of the church. She belonged to Lee County Historical Society, Keokuk Country Club, Southside Boat Club, Keokuk Yacht Club, Ladies of the Elks and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was a member of John Howland Pilgrim Society from whom she was descended. She was an avid Bridge and card player. She was a very generous contributor to many local and national charities. She believed strongly in giving.

Survivors include a daughter, Meg Oliver-Mills of Keokuk; and two grandsons, William and Benjamin Mills.

She was preceded in death by her husband on January 24, 1986, and a son, Scott, on July 9, 1964.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Bruce Blois officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Betty Oliver Fund for at-risk students of the Keokuk Community Schools.

DeJong's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Andrew O'Shea

Andrew Richard O’Shea, 57, of Keokuk, died at 11:09 AM Thursday, January 27, 2005 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born icon August 8, 1947 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Joseph M. and Flossie B. Lloyd O’Shea. He married icon Sandra Huston on September 13, 1985 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She survives. He served in the United States Army.

He had lived in Keokuk most of his life and was employed in production at Midwest Carbide for 32 years. He was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the labor union at Midwest Carbide and was a past officer of the local unit. His family was the most important thing in his life.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra of Keokuk; daughter, Kelly Duncan and her husband, James, of St. Louis, Missouri; two sons, Patrick O’Shea of Keokuk and Nicholas O’Shea of Ft. Madison, Iowa; stepdaughter, Michelle Allsup of Kenton, Ohio; fourteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three brothers, Michael O’Shea and his wife, Sue, of Kahoka, Missouri, Joseph O’Shea and his wife, Holly, of Pulaski, Tennessee and James Mortimer and his wife, Mary, of Keokuk; two sisters, Dianne Meinhardt and her husband, Jim, of Keokuk and Sally Hauff and her husband, Bubby, of Keokuk; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepdaughter, Gina Boyle; step grandson, Michael Boyle; and two sisters, Patricia Mortimer Moore and Mary Mortimer Grimes.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Deacon William Cosgrove officiating. Burial with Military Rites were in Keokuk National Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Ruth O'Bleness

Ruth I. O’'Bleness, 90, of Keokuk died Friday, September 12, 2003 at 7:35 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Ruth O'’Bleness was born icon on October 17, 1912 in Basco, Illinois. She was the daughter of Glenn and Mattie Beaumont Simmons. She married icon Karl O'’Bleness on September 14, 1937 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on January 23, 1996. She was lived in Keokuk since 1937 was had been employed in retail sales at Richard's Mens' & Boys' Wear. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk and for over fifty years was a member of Elmira Chapter of Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a niece, Mary Ann McKoon and her husband, Gerald, of Mt. Airy, Maryland; two great nieces, Renee Shively and her husband, David, of Hollywood, Maryland and Michelle Justice and her husband, Richard, of Westminster, Maryland; one great nephew, Jeremy McKoon, of Mt. Airy, Maryland; two great great nephews, Adam and Alex Shively; one great great niece, Lauren Shively; and four step great-great nieces, Felecia, Jessie, Melissa, and Christina Justice.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her only child, David on February 2, 1998; and one sister, Helen Williams.

Services were Thursday, September 18, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to The United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk or Lee County Hospice.

Ellen Nepote

Ellen Nepote, formally of Keokuk, Iowa, died Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the Lake Ridge Nursing Facility in St. Paul, Minnesota after a long illness with Alzheimer’'s disease.

Ellen Nepote was born icon on October 5, 1920 in Hudsonville Township, Illinois. She was the sixth child and Henry and Effie Mathenia York. She married icon Peter Nepote on December 26, 1942 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1991.

During her years in Keokuk she worked at the Keokuk Chamber of Commerce, was a licensed real estate broker and appraiser for thirty years, and as Vice President/Trust Officer of Keokuk Savings Bank and Trust until her retirement in 1985. She was named “Woman of the Year” in 1967, listed as “Community Leader and Noteworthy American” in 1979, and was listed in “Who’s Who in the Midwest”. She served on many boards, including Director of Lee County Mental Health Department, Lee County Health Department, Lee County Cancer Association, Fine Arts Council, Past President of Friendly House, Southeastern Community College Foundation Board, and as an officer of the National Association of Banking Women. She was also an active member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

Survivors include two sons, Peter Nepote and his wife, Linda, of Vernon Hills, Illinois and John Nepote and his wife, Patricia, of Mendota Heights, Minnesota; one grandson, Tristan Nepote and his wife, Monica, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; two granddaughters, Meghan and Molly Nepote of Mendota Heights, Minnesota; a great-granddaughter, Ava Nepote, of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; two sisters, Edna Mae Weir of Mt. Carmel, Illinois and Betty Graff of Russville, Arkansas; one brother, Ralph York and his wife, Evelyn, of Mt. Carmel, Illinois; twenty-four nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1948; her mother in 1962; her sisters, Mary in 1911 and Joy Spond in 2001; a half-sister, Ester Essex Burkett in 1973; and brothers, Ancel in 1919, Howard in 1994, and Glenn in 1999.

Services were Monday, October 18, 2004 at All Saints Church in Keokuk with Reverend Paul Connolly officiating. Inurnment was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’'s Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1700, Chicago, Illinois 60601-7333.
