Isadora Myers

Isadora Myers, 95, of Keokuk died Sunday, January 2, 2005 at 1:45 P.M. at Lexington Square in Keokuk, Iowa.

Isadora Myers was born icon on March 10, 1909 in Kinross, Iowa. She was the daughter of Charles S. and Mary Snell Myers. She was a 1926 graduate of Kinross High School and graduated from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Fall, Iowa. She had lived in Keokuk for many years and taught school for forty-six years until her retirement in 1974. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keokuk, the Lee County Retired Teachers Association, was a life member of the Iowa State Educators Association, and a member of the Ida Mansfield Circle of Kings Daughters.

Survivors include two nieces, Mrs. Marion Schiebel of Washington, Iowa and Mrs. Susan Kay Thompson and her husband, Steven, of Keokuk, Iowa; one nephew, Raymond Myers of Clinton, Iowa; five great nieces; and six great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ada Painter and Tressie Myers; and two brothers, Joe and Carl Myers.

Services were Thursday, January 6, 2005 at the First Baptist Church in Keokuk with Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Brethen Cemetery near Kinross, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Keokuk.

Martha L. Music-Pryor

Martha L. Music-Pryor, 55, of Keokuk, died Monday, May 19, 2003 at 7:55 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Martha Music-Pryor was born icon on November 5, 1947 in Keokuk. She was the daughter of Carlos M. “Papa Chico” and Sammye (correct spelling) L. Scott Ruis. She had been married icon to Jerald Pryor and he preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and was the proud owner of Papa Chico’s Restaurant in Keokuk. She loved crafts of all types, she enjoyed the riverboat, and loved her granddaughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Raelene Maxwell and her husband, Kim, of Montrose, Iowa; a granddaughter, Hunter Maxwell, of Montrose; her mother, Sammye Ruis, of Keokuk; one brother, Rick Ruis and his wife, Gloria, of Ft. Madison, Iowa; two nephews, Ted Ruis of Galesburg, Illinois and Roy Ruis of Lockhart, Texas; aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Wise of Keokuk, Eleanor Guzman of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Ralph Ruis of Chicago, Illinois, Robert Ruis of Ft. Madison, Iowa, and Ophelia Garcia of Ft. Madison, Iowa; numerous cousins; and good friend, Tom Teeters.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1994; her grandparents; one aunt; and cousins.

A memorial service was held Thursday, May 22, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Hickory Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for her granddaughter, Hunter.

Thomas Mortimer

Thomas James Mortimer, 73, of Wayland, Missouri, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 7:32 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Thomas Mortimer was born icon on March 26, 1931 in rural Canton, Missouri. He was the son of Thomas Martin Alfred and Violet May Davis Mortimer. He married icon Delores Brookhart on December 22, 1951 in Canton, Missouri. She survives. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart and Silver Star. He had lived in Keokuk from 1951 until 1966 and for the past thirty-nine years had lived in Wayland. He had been employed as a supervisor at Dryden’s-Shellor Globe for forty-one years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Alexandria Baptist Church, American Legion Post #41 and the V.F.W. Post #3508 in Keokuk, and served as a Trustee at the Keokuk Eagles Club. He was a member of the Keokuk B.P.O.E. Lodge #106 and had served as Exulted Ruler.

Survivors include his wife, Delores Mortimer of Wayland, Missouri; five children, Sherry Bunker and her husband, David, of Wayland, Missouri, Michael J. Mortimer and his wife, Donna, of Donnellson, Iowa, Debra Brown and her husband, Tony, of Kahoka, Missouri, Tom Mortimer and his wife, Carol, of Dumfries, Virginia and Sara Coffman and her husband, Larry, of Kirksville, Missouri; seven brother and sisters, Larry “Jack” Mortimer of Keokuk, Raymond Mortimer of Monmouth, Illinois, Fuller Mortimer of Keokuk, Bobby Dean of Keokuk, Rosetta Worster of Alexandria, Missouri, Betty Miller of Keokuk and Peggy Conover of Port St. Louis, Florida; fifteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Violet Mortimer.

Services were Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dan Deatrick officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Visitation was Monday, February 21, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk after 2:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

There was a public Elks Memorial service held at 6:00 PM Monday at DeJong's Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Elks Lodge # 106 Scholarship Fund.

Sharon Jean Mortimer

Sharon Jean Mortimer, 67, of Keokuk, Iowa died Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 2:35 P.M. at her home.

Sharon Mortimer was born icon on March 11, 1937 in Rock Island, Illinois. She was the daughter of William and Esther Cochenour Varner. She married icon Laroy E. “Jack” Mortimer on October 11, 1953 in Alexandria, Missouri. He survives. She had lived in Keokuk for sixty-four years. She had been employed in production at Shellor Globe for thirty-two and one-half years until her retirement in March of 1999. She enjoyed attending the Calvary Foursquare Church in Keokuk. She loved baby-sitting for her grandchildren and enjoyed playing bingo, bowling and traveling.

Survivors include her husband, Laroy “Jack” Mortimer of Keokuk, Iowa; her children, Penny Sue Hale of Hamilton, Illinois, Larry E. Mortimer and his wife, Carol, of Montrose, Iowa, Sidney L. Mortimer and his wife, Christine, of Hamilton, Illinois, Martin D. Mortimer and his wife, Rosemaee, of Ainsworth, Iowa, Rick L. Mortimer and his wife, Debbie, of Donnellson, Iowa, John A. Mortimer and his wife, Wendy, of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, Karen J. Prewitt of Basco, Illinois, and Diana L. Lang and her husband, Luke, of Carrollton, Texas; a stepdaughter, Rebekah A. Mortimer, of Ottumwa, Iowa; three sisters, Kathleen Miller of St. Joseph, Missouri, Elaine Brownlee and her husband, Edward, of Warsaw, Illinois, and Blanche Knudtson and her husband, Ron, of Anaheim, California; her father, William L. “Bill” Varner, of Keokuk, Iowa; twenty-three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren;numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and great nephews; and great-great nieces and great-great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother, Larry T. Varner.

Services were Saturday, November 6, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dan Davis officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk. Visitation was be Friday, November 5, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk after 1:00 P.M. with the family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

Memorials may be made to the Lee County Hospice or Calvary Foursquare Church in Keokuk.

DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk is in charge of the arrangements.

Johanna E. Morris

Johanna Elizabeth Morris 90, of Keokuk died Monday, January 5, 2004 at 11:30 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon August 24, 1913 in Wayland, Missouri the daughter of Otto and Mary Elizabeth Grimes Dommerman. She had lived in the Keokuk-Alexandria area all her life. She had worked for several years in the Lee County Treasurer’s Office. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the women’s organizations, including the ladies sewing group that sewed rag rugs. She belonged to the Royal Neighbors, and had been a member of Kings Daughters.

She is survived by two daughters: Betty Carroll and her husband Bill of Keokuk, Iowa and Dianna Dawson of Burlington, Iowa; two sons, William Johnson and his wife Freda of Hamilton, Illinois and Donald Johnson and his wife Joanna of Keokuk; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one grandson, and a nephew.

Funeral services were held Thursday January 8, 2003 at De Jong’s Funeral Home, Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Frazee Cemetery in rural Wayland, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church.

George Morgan

George E. Morgan, Sr., 82, of Keokuk, died at 6:30 AM Saturday, December 28, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

He was born icon January 21, 1921, in Keokuk, the son of Albert L. and Mary L. Le Master Morgan. He married icon Betty Hammel on December 25, 1945 in Keokuk. She survives. He served in the Army during World War II with the Co B, 56th Engineers. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed for forty-two yeas at Keokuk Electro-Metals later, which became Foote-Mineral. He also operated Morgan Tax Service.

He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Keokuk; Keokuk Lodge #12 AF&A; M; American Legion Post #41 where he served for many years as a Trustee; VFW #3508. He took part many times with the Legion and V.F.W., which together provide military rites for veterans. He was also a member of Local #148 Operating engineers and he had served as a union official. He loved his family, motorcycle riding, photography, and being there for everyone else. He also was an avid Cub fan.

He is survived by his wife, Betty of Keokuk, Iowa;
a daughter, Georgia Merschman and husband,Edward, of Ft Madison, Iowa; two sons, George Morgan Jr. and his wife, Sandy, of Keokuk and Terry Morgan and his wife, Cheryl, of Keokuk, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lonnie R. Morgan; a daughter, Sherry Davis; six brothers, Albert L. “Bud” Morgan, Frank M. “Mart” Morgan, Robert L. “Shine” Morgan, James R. Morgan, Jack H. “Inky” Morgan, and Francis G. “Glenn” Morgan; and an infant sister, Dora.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William Olmstead officiating. Burial with full military rites was at Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Keokuk Veterans Memorial Fund.

Ailene Morgan

Ailene W. Morgan, 87, of Keokuk, died at 7:12 PM Saturday evening, April 26, 2003 at her home.

She was born icon November 5, 1915, in Macon, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Tyson Weisenborn. She married icon J.L. “Louie” Morgan on April 21, 1935 in Macon, Missouri.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; United Methodist Women; Chapter LZ, P.E.O.; Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary; King’s Daughters; and several bridge clubs. She loved to play bridge, garden and cook; and being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Janice Morgan of Keokuk; a son, David Morgan and his wife, Judith, of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, Gregory Newton and his wife, Jane, and children, Carrie & Andrew, Curtis Newton and children, August & Georgia Newton, Amy Johnson and her husband, Kurt, Elizabeth Helfrich and her husband, Michael, Cara Morgan, Taryn Bryden and Heather Bryden; two sisters, Jean King and Helen Malizia and her husband, Earl; brother-in-law, John Sparling; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.L. “Louie” Morgan; a daughter, Marilyn Morgan Newton; her parents; three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Pennington officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Keokuk Area Hospital Foundation, or Keokuk Community Schools Foundation.

Sadabelle Miller

Sadabelle Miller, 93, formerly of Keokuk, died Friday afternoon, August 20, 2004 at John Knox Care Center in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

She was born icon on August 8, 1911, in New York City, New York, the daughter of Joseph W. and Blanche Lufkin Cook. She married icon Harold C. Burr on July 11, 1930 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Evanston, Illinois. He preceded her in death on August 2, 1940. She married icon Arthur F. Miller on July 18, 1948 at the First Congregational Church in Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 14, 1969.

At an early age, she moved with her parents to the Chicago area. She graduated from Proviso High School, Maywood, Illinois, and received her music teaching certificate from Bush Conservatory of Music, Chicago Musical College. She taught music in Chicago schools. In 1932, she moved with her husband to Dallas City, Illinois, where she taught music privately and in Colusa High School.

In 1945, she and her children moved to Keokuk where she owned and operated The Children’s Specialty Shop for 20 years. She was a member of First Congregational Church from 1945 to 1994 when the church closed. She joined the United Presbyterian Church in March 1995. She was a member and Past Matron of Elmira Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and was its organist for 31 years, beginning in 1973. She received her 50-year Eastern Star membership pin on June 3, 1999. She was also organist for Malta Shrine, White Shrine of Jerusalem.

Survivors includea son, Edwin F. Burr, and wife, Sue, of Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Rhoda Jo (Burr) Gibson of Henderson, Nevada; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Funeral Serves were held Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Elmira Chapter #40 Order of Eastern Star or to United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk.

Alene Miller

Alene M. Miller, 64, of Keokuk, died at 6:50 P.M. Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Mrs. Miller was born icon March 19, 1939, the daughter of Paul and Florence Jones. She married icon Ralph Miller on July 13, 1979. She had lived in Keokuk for 40 years and was employed for over 20 years with Community Action as Family Development Specialist. She was a member of Southside Boat Club. She enjoyed computer games, flowers, gardening, and especially loved cats.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph Miller of Keokuk; a son, Paul George and his wife, Brandy, of Keokuk; a daughter, Michele Samuelson and her husband, Tim, of Durant, Iowa; a stepson, Harold A. Miller and his wife, Katherine, of Watts, Oklahoma; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were held at Monday, August 11, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Craig Burton officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Dorothy McNeight

Dorothy M. McNeight, 98, of Keokuk, died at 10:25 PM Sunday, November 9, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon October 30, 1905 in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of Lemuel and Sarah Blomily Post. She married icon Everett McNeight in 1925. He preceded her in death on September 13, 1994. She and her husband moved to Keokuk in 1939. They owned and operated Tri-State Farm Store and later owned and operated Tri-Sate Motors.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She had been a member of the YWCA Board, Ida Mansfield Circle of King’s Daughters, and Ladies of the Elks. She had volunteered at George Washington School and enjoyed working with kindergarten students where she was known as “Mrs. Mac”. She pursued learning and knowledge throughout her life.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Stoddard of Iowa City, Iowa and a granddaughter, Marlana Kay Hayes of West Linn, Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a sister, Janet.

Funeral services were held Thursday, November 13, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Blois officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Church or the Salvation Army.

Elsie May McLellan

Elsie May McLellan, 98, of Keokuk, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at 10:35 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Elsie McLellan was born icon on April 29, 1905 in Ada, Minnesota. She was the daughter of John and Beadie L. Davis Mingus. She married icon Harold D. McLellan on September 4, 1922 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 6, 1979. She lived most of her life in Keokuk and had been employed as a salesclerk at The Golden Rule and later as a waitress at the Chuck Wagon Café. She was a past member of the Moose and Eagle Clubs in Keokuk. She was a family-oriented person and she always enjoyed spending time with her family especially in the last few years. She enjoyed reading and playing cards, and was of the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita Bryant, of Keokuk, Iowa; Eleven grandchildren, including locally two granddaughters and one grandson, Vicki Fenton and her husband, Butch, of Keokuk, Rita J. Hanson of Iowa City, Iowa, and Steven Bryant and his wife, Lori, of Keokuk, Iowa; many great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, five brothers, three sisters, one son, and one daughter.

Graveside inurnment services were Monday, January 12, 2004 at Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Inurnment followed the service.
