Pearl McKay

Pearl McKay, 82, of Keokuk, died Friday, December 12, 2003 at 12:30 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Pearl McKay was born icon on April 2, 1921 in Dumas, Missouri. She was the daughter of Samuel and Lottie Marmian Kinkeade. She married icon Harold “Joe” McKay on October 27, 1951 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on July 7, 1978. She graduated from Keokuk Senior High in 1939. She enjoyed life.

Survivors include one sister, Norma Reed and her husband, B.N. “Red”, of Keokuk; one brother, Hubert Kinkeade, of Keokuk; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers; and one sister.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Deacon William Cosgrove officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Victor A. MacDonald, Sr.

Victor A. '“Bud”' MacDonald, Sr., 79, of Keokuk died Monday, May 12, 2003 at 4:11 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Victor MacDonald was born icon on February 6, 1924 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Harry W. and Inez Billings MacDonald. He married icon Billie Jean Craig. He later married icon Betty Grisham. He was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk and Tri-State area and was employed as an electrician at Electro-Metals. During World War II he served with the United States Army Air Crop as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41; V.F.W. Post # 3508; and was a member of the Deer Run Golf Course. He was a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs since 1934 and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Survivors include his companion and caregiver, Gail Adams, of Keokuk, Iowa; children, Jeanetta Catterson of Joliet, Illinois and Victor MacDonald, Jr. and his wife, Shelly, of Sarasota, Florida; stepchildren, Patty Pyles and her husband, Phil, of Warsaw, Illinois and Rick Grisham of Warsaw, Illinois; a sister, Mary Inez Holmes, of Keokuk, Iowa; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harry, Jr. and one in infancy; and one sister, Elaine Blake.

Services were Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Reverend Terry Lovell officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with military rites.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, American Heart Association, or to the American Cancer Association.

Ronald C. Lucas

Ronald Calvin Lucas, 57, of rural Nauvoo, Illinois, died Monday, December 27, 2004 at 4:50 A.M. at his home.

Ronald Lucas was born icon on May 30, 1947 in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was the son of Clayton Calvin and Eleanor J. Bunik Lucas. He married icon Karen Graham on January 22, 1966 in Carthage, Illinois. She survives. He was a 1965 graduate of Carthage High School and received an Associate of Arts Degree from Southeastern Community College. He was employed for several years at the Benner Tea Company in Keokuk as the produce manager. He was employed as Assistant Cashier and Secretary to the Board of Directors at Norwest Bank in Keokuk until 1989. That year he and his wife, Karen, opened Lucas Fine Furniture in Keokuk, which they owned and operated together until 2002. Ron also owned and operated Lucas River Lodge with Karen on their property south of Nauvoo. Ron loved his wife and family and enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, bird watcher, and raised flowers. Along with Karen, he bred and raised miniature horses. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Hamilton, Illinois and was a deacon there. He was a charter member of the Keokuk Optimist Club, member of the Keokuk Main Street Board of Directors, the Nauvoo Chamber of Commerce, and the American Miniature Horse Registry.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Lucas, of Nauvoo, Illinois; two daughters, Julie Ann Simpson and her husband, Rev. John Simpson, of Ft. Madison, Iowa and Jennifer Kay Lucas of Keokuk, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Ronald J. Lucas and Kendra R. Lucas of Arkansas and Jennifer A. Simpson and Ross L. Simpson of Ft. Madison, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jeffrey Calvin Lucas, who died in 1993.

A memorial service was held Friday, December 31, 2004 at the First Christian Church in Hamilton, Illinois with Reverend Phoebe Blankenship and Reverend John Simpson officiating.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Hamilton, Illinois.

Charlotte Lucas

Charlotte Emily Lucas, 91, of Keokuk, Iowa died Monday, August 4, 2003 at her home in Keokuk, Iowa.

Charlotte Lucas was born icon on July 3, 1912 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of William Chauncey and Josephine W. Bolton Benner. She married icon Hugh I Carrick on April 6, 1933. She later married icon Wilfred Lucas on January 18, 1964. He preceded her in death on January 29, 1966. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1930 and attended Junior college for one year at Centerville, Iowa. She taught school at Ashton, Iowa. She was employed at Peal Frazier Beauty Shop for seven years as a beautician. She was employed for seventeen years at the Lee County Treasurer’s Office as First Deputy Treasurer. She was a member of the First Christian Church and the ladies groups at the church. She attended Bible study on Tuesday mornings. She was a former member of King’s Daughters, Rebecca Organization, and Business and Professional Women. She was the youngest of six children and the last of her family.

Survivors include a son, David Carrick and his wife, Margaret, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; three grandchildren, Chauncey Carrick of Sycamore, Illinois, Benjamin Carrick of Omaha, Nebraska, and Emily Carrick of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents, both husbands, five brothers, and a sister.

Services were Thursday, August 7, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend William Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Sandusky Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or Camp Eastman Development Association.

Daniel Londrie

Daniel Joseph Londrie, 59, of Keokuk, died Sunday, November 9, 2003 at 4:30 P.M. at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.

Daniel Londrie was born icon on May 9, 1944 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Lewis and Ruth Wright Londrie. He had lived in Keokuk for most of his life and was self-employed as a handyman. He had served in the United States Navy.

Survivors include three brothers, Lewis Londrie of Barstow, California, Donald Londrie and his wife, Karen, of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Robert Londrie and his wife, Janet, of Muscatine, Iowa; one sister, Mary Sirtak, of LaHarpe, Illinois; one aunt, Maxine Wright, of Keokuk, Iowa; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold Londrie; and three sister, Betty Michl, Dorothy Schlosser, and Joy Ireland.

Graveside services were Friday, November 14, 2003 at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites. Brother Bill Hauser officiated. Burial followed the service.

Catherine C. Lofton

Catherine Claire Lofton, 88, passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home, Monday, March 17, 2003 with her loving family around her. She was born icon January 24, 1915 in Burnside, Illinois, the daughter of Fred and Pearl Zimmerman Hull. She attended school in Burnside and Carthage, Illinois and went on to get her RN degree at St Joseph Hospital in Keokuk. She went to Pontiac to work as a surgical nurse as her first job. She was united in marriage to Le Roy “Bud” Lofton on March 19, 1937 in Keokuk where she spent her remaining years.

She is survived by her husband; Le Roy of Keokuk; three daughters, Patricia A. Laubersheimer and her husband Chuck of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Linda C. Auchstetter and her husband, Jerry of North Aurora, Illinois, and Diane K. Thomas and her husband, Jerry of Jefferson City, Missouri; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; one brother, Tom Hull and his wife, Lorene of Macomb, Illinois; many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Lisa Kane; a special cousin and friend, Monsignor Patterson; and her bridge friends and her neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, Edgar, and John Hull; one sister, Leah Mason; her mother and father in law, Le Roy R. and Helen Betts Lofton; a sister-in-law, Shirley Kane; and a brother-in-law, Ralph Lofton.

Memorials maybe made to American Cancer Society, American Red Cross/Blood Foundation, or to All Saints Catholic Church.

Beverly Loewenstein

Beverly Ann Loewenstein, 75, of Keokuk, died at 8:30 AM Saturday, May 14, 2005 at River Hills In Keokuk.

Beverly was born icon May 8, 1930, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Alphred D. and Mary Josephine Smith Howard. She had been married icon to Robert Conn and later to William McAdams. She Hubert H. “Lou” Loewenstein on January 20, 1962 in Hamilton, Illinois. He preceded her in death. She lived in Keokuk most of her life and was employed in housekeeping at Keokuk Area Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion, and was a longtime member of Keokuk Business and Professional Women.

She is survived by four children, April S. Hagmeier of Chester, Illinois, Robert H. “Rob” Loewenstein and his wife, Denise, of St. Charles, Missouri, Linda Valencia and her husband, Tony, of Highland, California and Larry Loewenstein and his wife, Sandy, of Indio, California; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was the last of her family, preceded by her parents, four sisters and five brothers. She was also preceded by two husbands; a son, Rick Conn; and a grandson, Ryan Lavrusky.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 19, 2005, at St. Paul United Church of Christ with Rev. Jacob Spratte officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ.

Glen E. Linquist

Glen E. Linquist, 92, of Ankeny, Iowa and formerly of Keokuk, died Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 4:35 P.M. at the Mill Pond Retirement Community in Ankeny, Iowa.

Glen Linquist was born icon on September 16, 1911 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of John I. and Hazel Brown Linquist. He married icon Hazel E. Peterson on September 28, 1940. She preceded him in death on March 13, 2000. He had lived in Keokuk for most of his life until the death of his wife. He moved to be near his children and then moved to Ankeny to live at the Mill Pond Retirement Community. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Linquist Furniture Store in Keokuk for many years. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk and served on numerous church committees.

Survivors include three sons, John E. Linquist and his wife, Sharon, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dr. Phillip A. Linquist and his wife, Janice, of Des Moines, Iowa, and David E. Linquist and his wife, Bonnie, of Des Moines, Iowa; one brother, John Linquist, of California; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Linquist.

Graveside services were Monday, August 16, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa with military rites. A memorial service was held following the graveside service at First Baptist Church in Keokuk with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Keokuk.

Marvin Lindner

Marvin Wayne Lindner, 80, of rural Keokuk, died at 4:00 AM Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his home on the farm, which had been his family’s for over 100 years.

He was born icon November 21, 1923, the son of Leonora Berthold Lindner and Milton Lindner. On December 23, 1956, he married icon Dorothy Nadine Bentzinger. She survives. He operated a service station for many years and later was a production manager at Sheller-Globe. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. He was an active member of the Farm Bureau, a Jackson Township Trustee, and served many years on the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Nadine Lindner of Keokuk; two sons, Michael Lindner of McKinney, Texas and Douglas Lindner and his wife, Lori, of Solon, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kearce and Kale Lindner of Solon; and one sister, Miriam Lodge and her husband, William, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonora and Milton Lindner, and a brother, Wilbur Lindner.

His body has been cremated. A Celebration of his Life was held Saturday, June 19, 2004 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Rev. William Olmsted officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established.

Eudora Mae Lawson

Eudora Mae Lawson, 83, of Keokuk, died Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 12:56 A.M. at her home.

Eudora Lawson was born icon on March 16, 1921 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. She was the daughter of Winslow Chesterfield and Mable Clark Thompson. She married icon Cecil Mecum in 1939. She later married icon Lloyd Lawson in 1949 in Keokuk. He preceded her in death. She had lived in Keokuk most of her life and had been employed in production for twenty-two years at St. Louis Gear until her retirement in 1981. She had been a member of the local machinist union. She enjoyed going to garage sales and swinging in her porch swing. She loved flowers and doing yard work, playing cards, and always had a pot of coffee going for anyone who might drop by.

Survivors include five children, Joe Mecum of Keokuk, John E. “Jack” Mecum and his wife, Nita, of Sarasota, Florida, Marcia Lawson Soper and her husband, Jerry, of Keokuk, Ruth Louise Lawson of Compton, California and Ron Lawson and his wife, Sue, of Keokuk; eight grandchildren, John and Jimmy Mecum, Jennifer Mercer, Joe and Richard Vaughan, Jayne Eisher, Candina and Ron Lawson II; fifteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Winnie Thompson, a sister, Mildred Burgess; her special companion of forty-one years, Lloyd “Buck” Reynolds; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

Services were Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to the Head Injury Foundation.

Barbara F. LaVanway

Barbara F. LaVanway, 72, of Ft. Madison, Iowa died Tuesday, July 15, 2003 at 4:28 P.M. at the Ft. Madison Community Hospital in Ft. Madison, Iowa.

Barbara LaVanway was born icon on April 2, 1931 in Clarion, Iowa. She was the daughter of Martin and Estelene Parris Wise. She was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Andy Fader, and her stepmother, Nettie Wise. She married icon Wayne Shoemaker in February 1948. She later married icon Archie William in 1963. She was raised in the Keokuk area until 1974 when she moved to Texas. She returned to the Keokuk-Ft. Madison area in 1992. She had been employed at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in production and then at several convenience stores. She enjoyed country music, singing, and crocheting. She enjoyed spending as much time as possible with her family. She had attended Crossview Fellowship Church in Keokuk.

Survivors include her longtime companion, John LaVanway, of Timpson, Texas; two sons, Andy Shoemaker of Wayland, Missouri and Mike Shoemaker of Argyle, Iowa; two daughters, Connie Palmer of Keokuk, Iowa and Jackie Zufall of Burlington, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Lori Jones, Andrea Morris, Jason Shoemaker, Micandi Shoemaker, and Troy Shoemaker all of Texas, Christal Killian of Seattle, Washington, and Jeremy and Amy Zufall of Burlington, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Shoemaker, Paige and Tara Jones, J.J. Reed, Matthew Morris, and Ciera Shoemaker; one brother, Larry Wise; two stepsisters, Earlene Barnes of Keokuk, Iowa and Carlene Shotts of Revere, Missouri; one half-brother, Merle Zwiefel of Missouri; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepparents, two husbands, and a brother, Darrell Wise.

Services were Saturday, July 19, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Sister Lynn Hadsall officiating. A private family inurnment in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk will be at a later date.

Her body has been cremated.

Wade A. Kline

Wade A. Kline, of Warsaw, Illinois, 1 year old son of Jennifer Kline and Jeff Brookhart, died Thursday night, December 23, 2004, in a house fire at his home.

He was born icon December 3, 2003 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Jeff Brookhart and Jennifer Kline.

He is survived by his mother, Jennifer Kline of Warsaw, Illinois; his father, Jeff Brookhart of Quincy, Illinois; sister, Allie Brookhart of Warsaw, Illinois; brother, Hunter Malone of Warsaw, Illinois; maternal grandparents, Steve & Brenda Kline of Keokuk; paternal grandparents, Richard & Pamela Brookhart of Ft. Madison, Iowa; special or honorary grandparents, Robert & Diana Gooding of Warsaw with whom they lived; paternal great grandfather, Roger Nichols of Warsaw; maternal great grandparents, Jim & Betty Jairl of Keokuk; three aunts, Nichole Kline, Tiffany Kline & Amanda Bailey; three uncles, Ben Bosch, Adam Bailey & Matt Happs; two great uncles, Larry Mendenhall & Garry Mendenhall of Keokuk; and godparents, Ben Bosch & Danielle Keefe.

He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Sue Nichols, and maternal great grandparents, Ernest and Virginia Mendenhall.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. John Varner officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.
