John Kelly

John W. Kelly, 70, of Keokuk, died at 1:57 PM Sunday, November 9, 2003, at Great River Medical in Burlington, Iowa.

He was born icon November 20, 1932 in Gilman, Illinois, the son of Earl D. and Susie Tharp Kelly. He married icon Nancey Klampe on October 3, 1975 in Carthage, Illinois. She survives. He graduated from Plymouth Community High School in Plymouth, Illinois. He was a truck driver for WM Johnson Truck Lines for 50 years, retiring in 2003. He had driven 41/2 million miles accident without an accident. He attended Evangelical Free Church. His hobbies included woodworking and computer games. He enjoyed country music, going to Branson, and trips to Arkansas. He loved his family.

He is survived by his wife, Nancey of Keokuk; five children, Richard Kelly and his wife, Sandy, of Cantril, Iowa, Connie Heiser and her husband, David, of Pulaski, Iowa, Robin Chaplin and Calvin Bartholomew of Milton, Iowa, David Kelly and his wife, Dianne, of Sigourney, Iowa and Angela Kelly and Jeff Holliday of Keokuk; four stepchildren, Perry Phillips of Altoona, Iowa, Polly Antonelli and her husband, Joseph, of Altoona, Iowa, Jennifer Goodenow and her husband, Mitchell, of Waukee, Iowa and Jeremy Phillips and Deb Copeland of Des Moines, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren, Andrey & Michael, Kelli, Justin & Heather, Brandon K., Brandon H., Sarah, Adam, Dominic, Perry, Lisa, Kelsey, Alex, Reggie, Ronnie; five great grandchildren, Madelyn, Jessica, Alyssa, Tyreece & Zander; two brothers, James Kelley and his wife, Ilene, of Norwalk, Iowa and William Kelly and his wife, Nadine, of Keokuk; a sister, Mary Smith and her husband, Dallas, of Parker, Colorado; two brothers-in-law, Don Klampe and his wife, Nancy, of Jackson, Kentucky and James Klampe and his wife, Barbara, of Oskaloosa, Iowa; sister-in-law, Dawn Eacker and her husband, Dean, of Kamiah, Idaho; and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 12, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Craig Burton officiating.

Memorials may be made for a future Great River Medical Hospice House.

Dennis Keller

Dennis W. Keller, 69, of Keokuk, died at 8:10 AM Friday, December 19, 2003, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born icon January 30, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Joseph & Theodora Marie Herlofson Keller. He married icon Vesta E. Batten Shaw on March 12, 1955 in Warsaw, Illinois. She preceded him in death on April 2, 1981. He had lived in Keokuk since 1944 and was a radio and television technician and was co-owner of Shaw Radio and Television from 1955 to 1977. He had attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church. He loved music, including classical, Lawrence Welk type and Western music. He was an avid reader. He was a gentle, kind and giving man, not expecting anything in return for his kindness.

He is survived by his companion, Ruth Bryant of Keokuk good friends, Emmanuel Jones of Keokuk and William Mullen of Keokuk

He was preceded in death by his mother and an uncle, Clarence Herlofson.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Don Rothweiler officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Edna Kay

Edna S. Kay, 89, of Keokuk, died at 12:35 AM, Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon December 31, 1913, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of George C. and Elsie G. Jones Montague. She married icon John Raymond Kay on April 23, 1949 at Kirksville, Missouri. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1978.

She had lived in Keokuk all her life and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1932. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and had been active in the Ladies Sewing Circle and other women’s activities at the church.

She is survived by two stepsons whom she raised, Gerald E. Kay and his wife Barbara, of Cocoa, Florida and John R. Kay, Jr. of Keokuk; a nephew whom she raised, Jerry Yarrington of Kansas City, Missouri; two sisters, Marjorie C. Head of Hamilton, Illinois and Helen S. Boddy of Keokuk; two nieces, Christine Y. Denson of Springfield, Illinois and Kathy J. Chatelain of Keokuk; and a nephew, Ronald S. Yarrington of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Katherine E. Crimmins and Dorothy A Valeu.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Monday, December 29, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Visitation was after 3:00 PM Sunday at DeJong's Funeral Home with family meeting friends from 6 to 8.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Myrle "Bud" Kaiser

Myrle L. '“Bud'” Kaiser, 87, of Keokuk, died Friday, January 23, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

He was born icon November 19, 1916 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Stark Kaiser. He married icon Anna Riney on September 23, 1940 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She survives.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He had been employed as maintenance foreman at Hubinger Company for 37 years, retiring in 1980. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a member and Past Master of Keokuk Lodge #29, A.F. & A.M. and American Legion Post #41. He was a past member of International Musicians Union and played in the “Bud Kaiser Band”, McNamara’s Band, and area combos.

He is survived by his wife, Anna of Keokuk; two sons, Mike Kaiser and his wife, Sally, of Annapolis, Maryland and Doug Kaiser and his wife, Cathy, of Keokuk; four grandchildren, Amanda Kaiser of Warsaw, Illinois, Jamie Kaiser of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Amy Daniels of Annapolis, Maryland and Michael Kaiser of Annapolis, Maryland; four great grandchildren; twin sister, Marjorie Jobe and her husband, Raymond, of Keokuk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister in infancy.

Private graveside services and burial were held at Keokuk National Cemetery with Dr. David Castrodale officiating.

Memorials may be made to the music departments of all Keokuk schools.

Ward W. Kain

Ward W. Kain, 78, of Keokuk, Iowa, died Monday, March 22, 2004 at 10:50 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Ward Kain was born icon on September 5, 1925 in Birmingham, Illinois. He was the son of Arthur and Rosa Mae Korschgen Kain. He married icon Joanne LeMieux on September 17, 1949 in Algona, Iowa. She preceded him in death on December 23, 1987. He served with the United States Army during World War II. He had been employed as General Manger at R.L. Patton Company for thirty-one years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Keokuk Elk Lodge #106, Wayland Lions Club, and the Keokuk Coin Club. He served on the Lee County Assessors Board and had been a past state president of the Iowa Numismatic Association. He was a long time participant at the Keokuk Farmers Market and was well known for his tomatoes and watermelons.

Survivors include children, Patty J. Swank of Hamilton, Illinois, Wendy S. Smith and her husband, Randy, of Kahoka, Missouri, Cathy A. Bugh of Keokuk, Iowa, Debra R. Fairfax and her husband, Bob, Norwalk, Iowa, and David A. Kain of Keokuk, Iowa; two granddaughters, Angela Miller and her husband, Heath, of Hamilton, Illinois and Megan Smith of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Derek Smith of Kahoka, Missouri, Brian Bugh of San Antonio, Texas, Ryan Fairfax of Manchester, Connecticut, Brandon Fairfax and Justin Fairfax of Norwalk, Iowa, and Nicholas Kain and Sarah Kain of Blue Eye, Missouri; great-grandchildren, Alexander Miller and Kamryn Miller; two nieces; one nephew; and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; grandparents; a brother, Robert Kain; a sister, Irene Mills; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Mills; and infant daughter, Linda Mae Kain.

Services were Thursday, March 25, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Memorials may be made to the Keokuk Public Library Foundation.

Dorothy Jump

Dorothy Lea Jump, 77, of Keokuk, died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at 4:33 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Dorothy Jump was born icon on July 31, 1926 in Independence, Missouri. She was the daughter of Theodore C. and Anna Viola Beasley Haynie. She married icon Lewis Jump on September 2, 1945 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He survives. She graduated from Shawnee Mission High School and attended college. She had lived in Keokuk for the past fifty-six years and had been employed as a nurse’s aid for over twenty years at St. Joseph Hospital, Graham Hospital, and later at Keokuk Area Hospital. She retired in 1982. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene of Keokuk and she loved to read and garden. In later years she enjoyed watching movies. She enjoyed bowling, bowling tournaments, but most of all she loved her family.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis Jump, of Keokuk, Iowa; six children, Susan Hobson of Norfolk, Virginia, Sharon Brannegan of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Carol McClue and her husband, Danny, of Corvallis, Montana, Joyce Godfrey and her husband, William, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Michael Lewis Jump of Keokuk, Iowa, and Becky DeWitte and her husband, Robert, of Warsaw, Illinois; two sisters, Millie Forrester of Jones, Oklahoma and Lois Cornelius of Archie, Missouri; twenty-two grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Grant Foster officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene of Keokuk.

Wayne Jones

Wayne W. Jones, 81, of Wayland, Missouri, passed away at 10:50 AM Sunday, August 10, 2003, at Clark County Care Facility in Kahoka, Missouri.

Wayne Wilbur Jones was born icon March 21, 1922 at Alexandria, Missouri, the son of William F. and Blanch Arnold Jones. He married icon Dorothy Louise Elschlager on November 7, 1944. She survives.

Wayne entered the United States Army in November 1942. His honorable discharge was in January 1946. While serving in the Army his military occupational specialty was airplane and engine mechanic. P.F.C. Wayne Jones had the military decorations and citations of WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Wayne’s date of original appointment to the U.S. Postal Service was March 16, 1949, in Memphis, Missouri as a substitute clerk at the Memphis Post Office. In 1956 Mr. Jones transferred to the Keokuk Post Office as a letter carrier. He relocated his family to Alexandria at that time. He built a house on the lot where he had grown up with his parents. Mr. Jones retired in 1978 from the Postal Service. He has several other careers. He was a commercial fisherman and a master contractor. He ran an antique shop for many years in Wayland. Wayne refinished and restored woodstoves and other antiques. He restored a 1911 Model T Ford. He was a past member of the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club and the Ill-Ia-Mo Antique Car Club. He was also employed with Burns Security until 1997.

Wayne was an active Democrat and volunteered in many campaigns including the late Mel Carnahan’s. Mr. Jones himself was elected as Eastern Commissioner of Clark County for two two-year terms from 1991 to 1994.

Mr. Jones was a member of the First Baptist Church of Keokuk. He served several years on the Board of Trustees for the Baptist Church. He was a member of St. Francisville Lodge # 588, A.F. & A.M. at Wayland, Missouri.

Wayne’s loves and interests were numerous. Included in these were love of family, friends, and people ranging from kids on a mail route who knew his as “Eddie” to the beloved staff of the Clark County Nursing Center.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Jones of Wayland, Missouri; two daughters, Carolyn Galbraith of Wayland, Missouri and Teresa Bogener of Newton, Kansas; two grandchildren, Abby Galbraith of Wayland, Missouri and James Bogener of Kansas City, Missouri; special surrogate grandson, Daniel Ludwick of Kahoka, Missouri; a sister, Margarite Wright of Wayland, Missouri; a brother, Kenneth Jones of Quincy, Illinois; several nieces and nephews including special niece, Lucille Shipe of Warsaw, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Charlotte Gordon, Juanita Ruffcorn and brother, Ira Jones.

Funeral services was Thursday, August 14, 2003 at First Baptist Church in Keokuk. Burial was in Campground Cemetery at Downing, Missouri. Military Rites were performed by Herman H. Blum, Post #192, of Kahoka, Missouri.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Keokuk or to American Cancer Society.

Donald Jones

Donald G. Jones, 63, of Keokuk, died Friday, May 02, 2003 at 1:13 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

He was born icon February 22, 1940 in Macon, Missouri, the son of Simmie and Myrtle Nelson Jones. He married icon Peggy Rockelman on September 6, 1966 in Carthage, Illinois. She survives. He had worked in auto sales. He and his wife owned and operated Jones’ General Store.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Jones; three sons, Kenneth Jones and his friend, Diana Stewart, of Warsaw, Illinois, Donald Jones and his wife, Angela, of Keokuk and Jeffery Jones and his friend, Valare Miller, of Keokuk; two daughters, Patty Handyside and her husband, John, of Hannibal, Missouri and Debbie Jones of Keokuk; nine grandchildren; one brother, Glenn Jones of Quincy, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harlen and Simmie Jones; and a sister, Cecile Ellyson.

Graveside services with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating were held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

James H. "Chintz" Jones

James H. “'Chintz'” Jones, 70, of Warsaw, Illinois, died Monday, March 10, 2003 at 10:50 A.M. at his cabin on the river.

James Jones was born icon on January 20, 1933 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Hubert Henry and Edith Emily Neves Jones. He married icon Pat Burke on September 4, 1955 in Keokuk. He later married icon Julie DeYoung on June 6, 1997 in Keokuk. She survives. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk. He served with the U.S. Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. He served with the Keokuk Police Department for sixteen years. He later owned and operated Chintz’s Bar in Keokuk. He was a member of the Elk’s B.P.O.E Lodge # 106, Southside Boat club, and the Keokuk Yacht Club. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Jones, of Warsaw, Illinois; one son, James Jones and his wife, Ginger, of Joy, Illinois; five daughters, Michelle Batley and her husband, Steve, of Keokuk, Iowa, Theresa Jones of Iowa City, Iowa, Kim Soper and her husband, Jed, of Alexandria, Missouri, Jacqueline Jones of Keokuk, Iowa, and Kelly Rockelman and her husband, Sean, of Keokuk, Iowa; two stepchildren, Mandy Wright of Hamilton, Illinois and Lora Egley of Port Smith, England; two half-brothers, Mike and Floyd Jones; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an uncle, Hilbert Jones.

Memorials may be made to the Hancock County Blessing Hospice or to Special Olympics.

Inez Johnson-Kull

Inez Johnson-Kull, 80, of Keokuk died Wednesday, February 2, 2005 at 9:53 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Inez Johnson-Kull was born icon on January 6, 1925 in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Charles Henry and Elise Tadlock Creekmore. She married icon Donald R. Johnson on November 4, 1944 in Norfolk, Virginia. He preceded her in death on May 27, 1989. She later married icon John E. Kull on July 18, 1998 in Keokuk and he preceded her in death on December 13, 2001. She had lived in Keokuk since 1946 and had been employed in production from 1965 to 1986 at Shellor Globe where she was a member of United Rubber Workers Local 444. In the past she regularly volunteered at Keokuk Area Hospital and served as a poll watcher for the Democratic Party. She enjoyed traveling and visiting gambling boats with her special friend, Pat Hocker. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her great joy.

Survivors include six children, Donald R. Johnson, Jr. and his wife, Dee, of Lima, Ohio, Kenneth W. Johnson and his wife, Jean, of West Chester, Ohio, Nancy C. Sanders and her husband, Jerry, of Franklin, Iowa, Clay A. Johnson and his wife, Cindy, of Joliet, Illinois, Vern Johnson and his wife, Mary, of Olathe, Kansas, and Paula Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Denine Johnson of Burlington, Iowa; stepson, Kevin Kull and his wife, Renee, of Keokuk, Iowa; one brother, Charles Creekmore and his wife, Joyce, of Greensboro, North Carolina; one sister, Adelaide C. Adler, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Ardeth Blackwell of Keokuk, Iowa and Edith Johnson of Revere, Missouri; twenty-seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one son, Glenn M. Johnson; and two sisters.

Services were Monday, February 7, 2005 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with friend of the family Phil Kimmel officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to her grandchildren’s education fund.

Herman Johnson

Herman Johnson, 84, of Keokuk, died peacefully early Monday morning, April 26, 2004 in his home after battling emphysema for many years.

Herman Johnson was born icon in Keokuk Graham Hospital to Herman Gustaff and Lola Brown Johnson on October 3, 1919 where his records reported his name as Baby Boy Johnson. At retirement this oversight was discovered and corrected. He served in the Army in the Aleutian Islands as a Tech Sergeant during World War II. He also served at Ft. McClellan, Alabama, where he met his wife, Ervel Juanita Tuck Johnson. They were married icon October 3, 1945. She preceded him in death on June 29, 1996 where he met and married icon his wife, Ervel Tuck Johnson. She preceded him in death on June 29, 1996. They traveled to Keokuk by train, which delivered them to the old Keokuk train station. Jemison Chevrolet employed Mr. Johnson for a number of years before he decided to go to work at The Keokuk Battery Company for his childhood friend, Keith Atterberg. After retiring from Keokuk Battery, he then chose to continue working at the First Baptist Church where his “Jack of all trades” ability was put to good use. His care and concern for church family, friends, children, and wife, and community were evident in the many extra hours he spent at church, as a deacon, and as a boy scout leader when his son was young.

Survivors include a son, Herman G. Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa; a daughter, J. Lynn Johnson of Keokuk, Iowa; two sisters, Kathryn Spiker of Argyle, Iowa and Margaret Henson of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and a brother, Virgil Johnson of Jordan, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of fifty-one years; two sisters, Jeanette Ealey of Wapello, Iowa and Dorothy Groves of Montrose, Iowa; and two brothers, George Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska and an infant brother.

Services were Wednesday, April 28, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home after 2:00 P.M. with family meeting friends from 6-8 P.M.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Keokuk.
