Russell L. Ensminger

Russell L. “Doc” Ensminger, 95, of Keokuk, died at 7:45 AM Friday, April 2, 2004, at River Hills in Keokuk.

He was born icon August 23, 1908 in Lima, Illinois, the son of Charles and Julia Ann Carrol Ensminger. He married icon Grace Kyle Summitt at Keokuk in 1940. She preceded him in death on July 10, 1972. He had been employed as an electrician at Hubinger Company for 46 ˝ years, retiring in 1973. He was an outstanding horseman and had shown horses at Keokuk Saddle Club shows and rode in many parades in Keokuk. He was noted for trail riding throughout the countryside.

He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and Elks Lodge #106.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra Montgomery of Denver, Colorado and Carole Eastman of Mesa, Arizona; a grandson, John R. Montgomery of Denver, Colorado; two granddaughters, Kyle Elaine Slaktowitz and her husband, Peter of Denver, Colorado and Nancy Lynn Engle and her husband, David of Minneapolis, Minnesota; several great grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Anderson of Decatur, Illinois and Virginia Linquist of Kewanee, Illinois; sister-in-law: Dorothy Ensminger of Kahoka, Missouri; several nieces and nephews; and good friend, Sadabelle Miller of Keokuk.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers, two sisters and two granddaughters, Patricia and Ann.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at St. John’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Bruce Blois officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Kathleen Ellsworth

Kathleen M. Ellsworth, 76, of Montrose, died Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 4:30 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

She was born icon March 2, 1927 in Quincy, Illinois, the daughter of Clinton N. and Mildred F. Lugering Norris. She married icon Harry Ellsworth on September 15, 1946 in Quincy, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1993.

She attended Western Illinois University. She began work as an office worker in 1955 at Hoerner Box and retired in 1992 from Stone Container after 37 years. She was of the Lutheran faith and was a past member of King’s Daughters.

She is survived by a son, Richard Ellsworth of Montrose, Iowa; a sister, Bonnie Miller of Canton, Missouri; and a brother, Robert Miller of Quincy, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother.

Graveside services were held Friday, June 27, 2002 at Montrose Cemetery in Montrose, Iowa with Rev. Dale Thomas officiating.

DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Eller

Virginia L. Eller, 83, of Keokuk, died at 3:30 PM, Saturday, December 04, 2004 in Hamilton, Illinois.

She was born icon May 29, 1921 in Wayland, Missouri, the daughter of Oscar and Clara Linder Moore. She married icon Francis Hoewing on September 11, 1940 in Palmyra, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 26, 1967. She married icon Ray Eller on May 1, 1971 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1989.

She graduated from Wayland High School and was a lifelong resident of the Keokuk and Argyle area. He was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She was employed as a bookkeeper at State Central Bank following the death of her first husband. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Keokuk where she was a member of the women’s sewing group and was active with the annual bazaar. She was a member of King’s Daughters.

She is survived by two sons, Ron Hoewing and his wife, Dee, of Rimrock, Arizona and Gerry Hoewing and his wife, Charlotte, of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Mike Hoewing and his wife,Sherry, Mark Hoewing and his wife, Loree, Sean Hoewing and his wife, Jennifer, and Sara Adams and her husband, Bill; great grandchildren, Cinnamon Hancock, Brandy Hoewing, Melody Sinks, Christopher Hoewing, Jacob Hoewing, Grant Adams; a brother, Maurice Moore of Marshalltown, Iowa; and special close friends, David & Meryl Brewer of Keokuk.

In addition to her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Anne Moore.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at First Lutheran Church in Keokuk with Rev. Terry Mahnke officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery at Vincennes, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church of Keokuk.

Bertha M. Elbe

Bertha M. Elbe, 94, of Keokuk, went to be with the Lord at 4:10 A.M., Sunday, January 25, 2004.

Bertha Elbe was born icon on October 6, 1909 in Hancock County, Illinois. She was the daughter of Henry and Lula M. Brown Frye. She married icon James Howard Benjamin Couchman on April 14, 1928 and he preceded her in death on January 20, 1936. She then married icon Claude Amon on July 2, 1938 and he preceded her in death on October 20, 1941. She later married icon Arthur R.W. Elbe on June 9, 1942 and he preceded her in death on December 25, 1976. She was a 1927 graduate of Warsaw High School. She had been employed in the office at the Keokuk Medicine Company. She had been a member of the Bel Air Baptist Church in Keokuk since 1975 where she was a longtime Sunday school teacher. She worked in the children’s evangelism program and she also served as a Prayer Warrior for the Church. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and hot pad holders and enjoyed giving them to her family, her church family, and to friends. She lived longer than any of her immediate family.

Survivors include a son, Donald Couchman and his wife, Darlene, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a daughter, Doris Mae Ewing and her husband, William, of Emond, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren; two great granddaughters; and five great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her three husbands; one brother; two half brothers; one half sister; and a sister-in-law, Florence D. Frye.

Services were Thursday, January 29, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Harold Dorsey of Mt. Pleasant officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, Bertha had asked that donations be made to the Bel Air Baptist Church of Keokuk.

Everett Doss

Everett Ivan Doss, 97, of Montrose, Iowa, died Friday, June 27, 2003 at 12:25 A.M. at the Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose, Iowa.

Everett Doss was born icon on May 18, 1906 in Irondale, Missouri. He was the son of William J. and Rebecca Taylor Doss. He married icon Jeanette Irene Cummings on April 7, 1926 in Esther, Missouri. She preceded him in death on February 25, 1977. He was raised in Potosi, Missouri and went to the Hochstatter School and Church in Hopewell, Missouri. In 1921, at the age of fifteen, he went to “Kraus & Little Watch & Clock Training Center” in St. Louis, Missouri for four years to learn watch repair. In 1925, he did retail watch repair in Flat River, Missouri and later in Ithica, Michigan. He moved to Keokuk in 1937 and was employed at Harry. M. Carry Watch Repair. From 1943 until 1953 he operated his own watch repair shop. He moved to Florida in 1953 where he enjoyed traveling. He returned to the Keokuk area in 1993. He was an avid billiard and pool player and enjoyed bird hunting.

Survivors include a son, William R. “Billy” Doss and wife, Nancy, of Dittmer, Missouri; two daughters, Ila Jean Nye and her husband, Clyde, of Keokuk and Peggy Anderson of Montrose, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren; forty great-great grandchildren; and three great-great-great grandchildren; one sister, Verna M. Skiles of Park Hills, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Iris Lee Mecey on November 22, 2001; a brother, Jesse Doss, in infancy; two sisters, Vada M. Doss, in infancy and Cressie Mae Eaton; a sister-in-law, Moreane (correct spelling) Asbridge; one infant grandson; two great-grandchildren, Lucinda and Derek; and one great-great granddaughter.

Following a private family service, the body was cremated.

Inurnment will be at a later date.

Leona Dommerman

Leona Mae Dommerman, 81, of Keokuk, died Friday, August 8, 2003, at her home.

She was born icon August 27, 1921, in rural Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Perry A. and Emma E. Mollers Wright. She married icon John H. Dommerman on June 23, 1945, in Keokuk. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1995. Before her marriage she helped manage her parents' farm and worked as a stenographer.

She was a member of First Christian Church, AARP, South Lee County Genealogical Society and a 50-year member of Eastern Star.

She is survived by two sons, John C. Dommerman and his wife, Debra, of Keokuk and Gerald L. Dommerman and his wife, Fran, of Keokuk; two grandchildren, Ryan and Laura Dommerman; two step grandchildren, Shane Speed and Tonya Stamper and her husband, Charles; three step great grandchildren, Ashley, Arianna and Aaron Stamper; and two sisters, Florence Hackett of Phoenix, Arizona and Vera Wendling of Boulder, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son in infancy, a brother, and an infant sister.

Funeral services were Wednesday, August 13, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park following the services.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Keokuk.

Cindra L. Kavanagh Day

Cindra Lou “'Cindy'” Kavanagh Day, 44, of Oak Harbor, Washington, died Monday, January 20, 2003 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington following a sudden illness.

Cindy Day was born icon in Palo Alto, California on January 6, 1959, the daughter of Jack and Marla Kavanagh. Growing up in a Navy family, she lived in Hawaii for eight years before moving to Ridgecrest, California. She met Gregory Allen Day in Ridgecrest and they were married icon on June 16, 1979. The couple lived in various Navy duty stations before coming to Oak Harbor in 1992.

Cindy was an active member of Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, where she was involved in youth work for over eight years. She was full-time youth director for the last three years. She was the director of the “Touch of Faith” sign language choir at the church. She had also been an interpreter for the special education department of the Oak Harbor School District since 1994. She enjoyed cross-stitching and scrap booking.

Survivors include her husband, Greg, at home; two sons, Keith Allen Day and wife, Christine, of Lawton, Oklahoma and Joshua Lee Day at home; a granddaughter, Caitlin Alexis Day; her parents, Jack and Marla Kavanagh; one sister, Gail Forbis of Ridgecrest, California; aunts; uncles; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Dayle and Irma Kavanagh.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Wilson L. Davis, Sr.

Will Davis died peacefully at 6:15 pm on December 18, 2003 at the River Hills Home in Keokuk, Iowa, from complications due to the advanced stages of Alzheimer’'s disease. Will was predeceased by his wife, Enid Dygert Davis, and is survived by his four children, Pat (Davis) Raney, Dr. Wilson L. Davis, Jr., Barbara Davis and James Davis along with seven grandchildren: Joseph Raney, Jane Raney, Kate Warman, Jay Davis, Kathryn Davis, Ashleigh Davis and Drew Davis. He is also survived by three great grandchildren, Zavior Raney, Ezzera Raney and Destiny Raney.

Will was born icon on August 5, 1917 in Goodrich, North Dakota, to James Ellsworth and Helen Wilson Davis. He had two older brothers, former North Dakota governor, John E. Davis and David E. Davis, both of whom predeceased Will. He is survived by his sister, Mary (Davis) Keating, living in Wayzata, Minnesota.

Will grew up in Bismarck, North Dakota, and attended Bismarck High School where he was an Eagle Scout and state champion in both tennis and bugling. He also played football and hockey. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1939 with a dual degree in business and engineering. At the University of Minnesota he served as the president of the Junior Class, where he met his wife to be, the Minnesota homecoming queen, Enid Dygert.

During World War II, Will Davis had a distinguished career as a technical advisor for the Honeywell Corporation working on strategic initiatives such as submarine detection systems, along with newly developed technologies for aviation, including the automatic pilot and radar bombing systems. Will married icon Enid Dygert on October 17, 1942 during the middle of his war activities.

After the war in 1948, Will and Enid moved to Keokuk, Iowa where they raised their family. Will bought the Seither & Cherry Company, building it into a multi-state plumbing, HVAC and electrical contracting firm. He also founded Davis Development Corporation and built a cattle ranching operation in Sheridan County, North Dakota. He retired from active business in the middle 1980s, and has since lived part time in Naples, Florida, along with Keokuk.

During his business career in Keokuk, Will served the community in a number of ways, starting as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, then participating as a member of the Chamber for years, along with becoming a Paul Harris Fellow with the Rotary club, and chairing the Urban Renewal Commission during the 1960s, credited for much of the new development that occurred in Keokuk during that timeframe. Will served Boy Scouts in a number of ways, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for his contributions to Scouting in the area. He developed and coached a very successful youth hockey program in Keokuk as well. Beginning in 1969, Will was elected to the State Senate of Iowa for two terms. He also served as both an Elder and Deacon of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, playing a key role in its reconstruction after the original church burned down.

Funeral services for Mr. Davis were held at the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk on Monday, December 22, 2003, with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk following the services. Memorials have been established at the United Presbyterian Church, 102 Main Street, Keokuk, IA 52632 and the Mississippi Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 3007 Flint Hills Dr., Burlington, IA 52601.

Evan J. "Junior" Davenport, Jr.

Evan J. “'Junior'” Davenport, Jr., 61, of Dallas City, Illinois died Sunday, April 11, 2004 at 8:40 P.M. at Genesis East Hospital in Davenport, Iowa.

Evan Davenport was born icon on January 30, 1943 in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He was the son of Evan and Elizabeth Bergmeir Davenport. He married icon Kathy Bush on June 16, 1979 in the state of Missouri. She survives. He was a lifelong resident of Dallas City, Illinois. He had been employed for the last twenty-five years as a guard at the Iowa State Penitentiary and was a member of the American Federated State & County Municipal Employees # 2989.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Davenport, of Dallas City, Illinois; a daughter, Gayla Davenport, of Dallas City, Illinois; two grandchildren, Kaitlin Davenport and Spencer Cox of Dallas City, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; three sister including one in infancy; and one brother.

A private graveside inurnment was held.

A memorial has been established for the family.

Thomas "Tom" Clark

Thomas Johnson '“Tom'” Clark, 71, of Hamilton, Illinois, died Friday night, July 18, 2003, at his home.

He was born icon January 2, 1932 in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Robert Kingsbury and Marjorie Johnsaon Clark. He married icon Nancy Mae Ames on August 20, 1960 in Peoria, Illinois. She survives.

He attended Knox College and served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a heavy equipment salesman for 20 years and then operated a tire store in Macomb, Illinois. Beginning in 1986, he was the owner-operator of The Fort Worth Barbeque in Hamilton, Illinois. He was of the Presbyterian faith and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Hamilton, Illinois; three children, Eric A. Clark of Hamilton, Marjorie Elizabeth Clark of Southlake, Texas and Kenneth J. Clark and his wife, Judith, of Montrose, Iowa; four grandchildren, Sabrina and Michelle Clark of Germany and Sarah Elizabeth and Ethan Thomas Clark of Montrose, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

His body was cremated.

A private family inurnment with military rites was held at Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk, Iowa.

DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Scott Chatelain, Sr.

Arthur Scott Chatelain, Sr., 56, of Hamilton, Illinois, died early Thursday morning, February 13, 2003 at his home.

He was born icon December 31, 1946, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Arthur W. and Lois Sherwood Chatelain. He married icon Kathy Yarrington on May 5, 2001, at Chatfield Lake near Keokuk, Iowa. She survives. He moved to the Keokuk area in the early 1980’s, and then moved to Hamilton in December of 1999. He worked as a CNA at several area nursing homes and had last worked at Hancock County Nursing Home in Carthage. His fellow co-workers had said that he was the most gentle, caring, and compassionate persons that they had worked with. He was of the protestant faith. He loved to work on jigsaw puzzles and enjoyed all sports.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Hamilton, Illinois; daughter, Tamra Chatelain and her fiancé, Jack Mortimer, of Keokuk; son, Arthur Scott Chatelain and wife, Laura, of La Belle, Missouri; five grandchildren, Crystal Flores, Christine Chatelain, Tiffaney Mortimer, George and Joseph Chatelain; his father, Arthur W. Chatelain and his wife, Marge, of Mesquite, Nevada; two sisters, Barbara Eichorn and her husband, Homer, of Chiloquin, Oregon and Peggy Conklin of San Antonio, Texas; one brother, Mark Chatelain of San Antonio, Texas; four stepchildren, Tamara Mattingly and her husband, Shad, of Hamilton, Illinois, Kevin Lorigan of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Nicole Mason and her husband, Todd, of Table Grove, Illinois and Jess Carlton of Hamilton, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Research.
