Arthur H. Carlson

Arthur H. Carlson, 93, of Donnellson, Iowa. Died Monday, October 11, 2004 at 3:37 P.M. at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa

Arthur Carlson was born icon on July 18, 1911 in Walkerton, Indiana. He was the son of John and Clara Nelson Carlson. He married icon Ethel Jobe on July 6, 1935 in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on August 17, 1993. He had lived in Keokuk from 1932 until 1954 when he moved to the New Boston, Iowa area. He had been employed as a mechanic for twenty-six years with R.L. Patton Construction Company. He was also a part-time farmer. He was a fifty-year member of the Hardin Lodge #29, A.F & A.M.; was a member of the Midwest Operating Engineers Union; and attended the First Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, watching the Chicago White Sox, and playing cards. He also enjoyed playing and watching golf and had scored a hole in one at the Great River Golf Course. Most important to him was his family.

Survivors a son, Arthur E. Carlson and his wife, Carolyn, of Keokuk, Iowa; two grandchildren, Timothy Carlson and his wife, Christie, of Thornton, Colorado and Amy Lowe and her husband, Scott, of Murietta, California; four great grandchildren, Chase and Madeline Carlson and Allison and Jacob Lowe; one brother, Clarence Carlson, of Walkerton, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Ernest, and Elmer.

Services were Friday, October 15, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

During visitation there was a public Masonic Service at 6:00 P.M.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Keokuk.

Raymond "Jerry" Carel

Raymond G. '“Jerry'” Carel, 72, of Hamilton, Illinois and formerly of Keokuk, died Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at 6:00 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Jerry Carel was born icon on December 15, 1930 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Raymond and Pansy Courtney Carel. He married icon Betty Post on September 21, 1952. She preceded him in death on March 2, 1984. He graduated from Keokuk Senior High in 1948. He lived in Keokuk until 1973 and was employed as a journeyman electrician with Local #48 at Blines Electric Company until 1973. He then moved to Newberg, Oregon where he was employed at the Trojan Nuclear Plant for nine years. He returned to Keokuk in 1984. He served as a Sergeant with the United States Marines during the Korean War from 1948-1952. From 1952-1962 he served as a Second Lieutenant with the National Guard.

Survivors include three children, Robin Carel and his wife, Lisa, of Hamilton, Illinois, Lou O. Carel of Keokuk, Iowa, and Holly J. Waldo of Lafayette, Oregon; three sisters, Pearl Mullen of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Alice of Burlington, Iowa, and Margaret Ann of Arkansas; five brothers, Raymond Carel of Wyoming, J.C. Carel of Gulfport, Illinois, Bobby Carel of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Paul Carel, and Frank Carel of Burlington, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty.

Graveside services were Monday, November 24, 2003 at the Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites. Reverend William S. Mitchell officiated. Inurnment followed the service.

Agnes G. Young Campbell

Agnes G. Young Campbell, 87, of Keokuk, Iowa died Thursday, September 25, 2003 at 9:45 A.M. at the Keokuk Nursing Center in Keokuk, Iowa.

Agnes Campbell was born icon on January 8, 1916 in Carthage, Illinois. She was the daughter of Marion Arthur and Bernice Gracie Landon Munson. She was married icon to Bruce Campbell. She moved to Keokuk nine years ago from Macomb, Illinois. She was a housewife and operated a cleaning service for homes and offices. She was of the Baptist faith. She was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. She also loved flowers and plants.

Survivors include two sons, Dale Young and his wife, Joan, of Hamilton, Illinois and Mark Campbell of Vancouver, Washington; a daughter, Marilyn Vermillion, of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Jennifer Hamman and her husband, Michael, of Nauvoo, Illinois, David Young and his wife, Joyce, of Burlington, Iowa, Timothy Campbell of Norfolk, Virginia, Lydia Campbell of Phoenix, Arizona, Troy Campbell, Michael Campbell of Orlando, Florida, Kathleen Waulters of Portland, Oregon, and Ricky Waulters of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; two brothers, Marion Munson and his wife, Evalina, of Houston, Texas and Weldon Munson of Carthage, Illinois; and one sister, Betty Strubinger Boyer and her husband, Jim, of Carthage, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard B. Campbell; three brothers, Arthur, Francis, and Leon Munson; three sisters, Blanche Webber, Irene Vacek, and Dorothy Kiesow; and nieces and nephews.

Services were Monday, September 29, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Reverend Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

There are no memorials.

Frances Camp

Frances B. Camp, 93, of Keokuk, died at 2:35 PM, Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at Keokuk Area Hospital.

She was born icon on June 11, 1910 in Keokuk, the daughter of Edward and Ellen Lindstrand Larson. She married icon Loren W. Camp on December 4, 1937 in Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother and a sister.

Survivors include a son, David Camp and his wife, Patty, of Palos Verdes, California; a daughter, Martha Barrows and her husband, Jack, of Iowa City, Iowa; two grandchildren and a step-grandchild; a sister, Marian Schwarz of Keokuk and a brother, Richard Larson and his wife, Vicki, of Keokuk; nephews and nieces; and a special friend, June Roberts.

She graduated from Keokuk Senior High School in 1927.

Mrs. Camp was employed at S.F. Baker & Co. of Keokuk early in her career. She worked many years as a volunteer for the Keokuk Area Hospital. She was active in the creation and management of the Keokuk Child Day Care Center. She was also active in the Keokuk YW-YMCA organizations. In 1962, she was voted YMCA Layman of the Year.

Mrs. Camp was a member of the United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk. She was active in numerous volunteer activities at the church.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 29, 2003 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, with Dr. Emmanuel Dass officiating.

Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk.Memorials may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk.

Bonnie Callhan

Bonnie Jean Callahan, 73, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, June 15, 2004.

She was born icon October 13, 1930 in Tama Township, Des Moines County, Iowa, the daughter of William Ernest and Luella Hull Hill. She married icon Walter Raymond Callahan on January 15, 1949 in Burlington, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 27, 1990.

She had lived in Keokuk since 1960 and had been employed as a CNA at Montrose Health Care Center, retiring in 1988. She was a member of All Saints Parish. She was a volunteer at Mississippi Terrace and served as a security monitor. She loved her grandchildren and Peach, her dog. She loved the river. She liked to walk, paint, play cards, do jigsaw puzzles, embroider, shoot pool, garden, camp and feed the ducks.

She is survived by children, Nancy West and her husband, Dean, of Bothell, Washington, Randy Callahan and his wife, Leann, of Ft Madison, Iowa, Susan Jobe and her friend, Bob Stuck, of Hamilton, Illinois, Mary Ellen Hall and her friend, Dan Short, of Bonaparte, Iowa, Roberta White and her husband, Harold, of Ione, California, Gary Callahan and his friend, Violet Spoores, of Keokuk and Julie Stinson and her husband, Ron, of Argyle, Iowa; twelve grandchildren, Jessica, Bonnie, Rachel, Amy, Heidi, Celeste, Trisha, Matthew, Christopher, Jennifer, Amanda and Ryan; twelve great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four children, Bonnie Rae, James, John and Joe; and two brothers.

Funeral services were held Sunday, June 20, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. Christopher David officiating. A private family inurnment was held later.

A memorial has been established

Fleta Caldwell

Fleta B. Caldwell, 89, of Keokuk, died at 1:40 PM Friday afternoon, August 13, 2004 at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

She was born icon August 18, 1914 in Newark, Missouri, the daughter of Benjamin Harrison and Tina Saunders Barnes. She married icon Cecil Caldwell on August 28, 1935 in Wyaconda, Missouri. He preceded her in death on November 11, 1965. She had lived in Keokuk since 1942 and was an Avon representative for over 30 years and had worked at Shellor-Globe, Swift & Company, and Shaeffer Pen. In later years she was a care provider and sitter. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served on the first Deaconess Board and as superintendent of Bible School several times. She loved working with children. She enjoyed cooking, quilt making, collecting dolls, and making doll clothing and giving them to children. She also enjoyed playing Karem and croquet.

She is survived by daughter, Bernice Vinson of Powdertown, Iowa and her children, Ed & Judy Vinson of Powdertown, Terry & Darla Vinson of Argyle, Mark & Jan Vinson of Jefferson City, Missouri and David Vinson of Powdertown; son, Richard Harrison Caldwell, Sr. of Burlington, Iowa, his children, Chad Caldwell & Richard Caldwell Jr. of Burlington, Iowa, and Adam & Ventura Sirtak of Burlington; and daughter, Linda Ganley and her husband, Joe, of Iowa City, Iowa, her children, Stephanie Anderson of Iowa City, Iowa, and Michael Ransford of Keokuk; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Fordney of Memphis, Missouri; and three nieces and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 2 brothers, and a sister.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 17, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.

Robert H. Cagle

Robert H. Cagle, 81 of Okeechobee, Florida, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Raulerson Hospital. He was born icon May 14, 1919 to William and Lenore Shaffer Cagle. He served in the U.S. Army infantry during World War II. Mr. Cagle had been a resident of Okeechobee for the past 20 years. He was lifetime member of High Noon Lodge Masonic Lodge # 635 of Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a member of the Parrott Avenue Christian Church and enjoyed fishing and flying.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Claudine E. Cagle of Okeechobee, Florida; one son, Hugh Cagle of Tomaha, Oklahoma; one daughter, Marian Carder and her husband, Ron, of Tomaha, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Bill Cagle Bowen of Denver, Colorado; and one sister, Alice D. Blevins of Denver, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Kathy and Joan and brother, Jimmy.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Matt Hunt officiating. Masonic Memorial services were conducted by Keokuk Lodge #29.

Colette R. Cady

Miss Colette Roberta Cady, 80, of Keokuk, died at 2:25 AM Sunday, February 6, 2005, at Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose, Iowa.

She was born icon May 21, 1924 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of James and Meta Seabold Cady. She lived in Keokuk most of her life and was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

She is survived by good friends and caregivers, Phil and Dorcas Rose of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Cady and Meta Robbins; a sister, Mrs. Wilma Cady Spiker; and a brother, David Robbins.

Graveside services were held Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Little Mound Cemetery in Rural Keokuk with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.

Mabel Busch

Mabel B. Busch, 96, of Keokuk, died Sunday morning, December 21, 2003, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

She was born icon May 8, 1907, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Erskine and Ada Smith Hendershot. She married icon Verl J. Busch on August 10, 1933 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 24, 1992.

She was a lifelong resident of Keokuk. Before starting a family, she was employed as a secretary and then at a ladies’ apparel store. She was a member of All Saints Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, and Ladies of Charity. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening, and singing. In her younger years she sang in the church choir. The light of her life was her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Janet Seaton and her husband, Melvin, of Basco, Illinois and Gloria Shuman and her husband, Jim, of Keokuk; eleven grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Verl Busch, two sons, Jim Busch and Larry Busch; and two brothers and one sister.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at All Saints Church with Rev. Christopher David officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to All Saints Catholic Church.

Eunice A. Burger

Eunice Alberta Burger, 90, of Montrose, Iowa, died Monday, December 08, 2003 at 4:45 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Eunice Burger was born icon on January 17, 1913 in Sioux County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Alfred V. and Nellie Mae Reynolds Ward. She had lived in the Montrose area for over fifteen years and owned and operated the Snack Shack Restaurant and Laundromat.

Survivors include a daughter, Birdelle Candella, of St. Charles, Illinois; two sons, Larry Burger of Montrose, Iowa and Paul Burger and his wife, Anne, of Las Vegas, Nevada; thirteen grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Fowler, of Montrose, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sisters, Caroline.

The body was cremated and inurnment will be at a later date in South Dakota.

Gary L. "Bird" Burchett, Sr.

Gary L. '“Bird'” Burchett, Sr., 68, of Keokuk, died Sunday, June 6, 2004 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois.

Gary Burchett was born icon on July 12, 1935 in Keokuk, Iowa. He was the son of Everett and Ruth Dietrich Burchett. He married icon Sally Calfee on June 26, 1954 in Keokuk. She survives. He was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and had been employed in maintenance at Smurfit-Stone Container for forty-seven years until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Keokuk. He enjoyed hunting, auto racing, and going to flea markets. He also enjoyed spending time with his children, his grandchildren, his great-granddaughter, and his dogs, Rosie and Sugar.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Burchett, of Keokuk, Iowa; three children, Gary L. Burchett, Jr. and his wife, Jeri, of Keokuk, Iowa, Susan Bigelow and special friend, Jim Gray, of Keokuk, Iowa, and John Burchett and special friend, Shelby Dickens, of Keokuk, Iowa; one sister, Joann Fabac, of Keokuk, Iowa; six grandchildren, Laura Burchett, Brad Burchett, Heather Bigelow, Tiffany Bigelow, Jason Bigelow, and Jeramy Bigelow; one great-granddaughter, Harley Bigelow; and two nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.

Services were Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Reverend Dan Davis officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established.

Edward R. Bryant

Edward R. Bryant, 67, of Montrose, Iowa, died at 2:15 AM Wednesday morning, January 26, 2005, at his home.

He was born icon January 28, 1937 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Riley V. and Ruth Phillips Bryant. He married icon Alice C. Young on January 25, 1957 in Keokuk. She survives.

He was a lifelong resident of the Montrose and Keokuk area and graduated from Keokuk High School in 1955. He served in the Army National Guard as a Sergeant. He was a pipe fitter and plumber and had worked for various contractors through the Union office for 36 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Keokuk and a member of the Church Council. He was a member of Local #125 Plumbers and Pipe fitters Union.

He is survived by his wife, Alice C. Bryant of Montrose; son, Brad C. Bryant and his wife, Denise, of Montrose; daughter-in-law, Micki Bryant of Donnellson, Iowa; grandson, Kole Bryant of Montrose; two granddaughters, Brooke and Bailie Bryant of Donnellson; three sisters, Ruth Gosnell and her husband, Kenneth, of Montrose, Martha Fuller and her husband, Ron, of Quincy, Illinois and Nancy Bunnell and her husband, Paul, of Argyle, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and a son, Scott, on May 17, 2004.

Memorial services were held Monday, January 31, 2005 at First Lutheran Church with Rev. Terry Mahnke officiating. Inurnment was in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Lee County Hospice or American Cancer Society.
