Mary L. Boston

Mary Louise Boston, 83, of Keokuk, died at 1:30 PM Friday, January 21, 2005 at her home in Keokuk.

Mary was born icon September 7, 1921 in Keokuk, the daughter of Earnest F. and Laura Azinger Davis.

She married icon Raymond F. Boston on August 24, 1943 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Keokuk. He survives.

She graduated from Keokuk High School in 1940 and had worked as a secretary at Keokuk High School from 1940 to 1950.

She was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk and the ladies’ groups at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond F. Boston and several nieces and nephews.

She was the last of her family and was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk with Rev. Brian Rihner officiating.

Burial was in Keokuk National Cemetery.

Raymond Booker

Raymond D. Booker, 84, of Keokuk, died Thursday, January 8, 2004 at 4:10 P.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Raymond Booker was born icon on September 18, 1919 in Goldthwaite, Texas.

He was the son of Willis E. and Allie Hudson Booker. He married icon Myrtle Aakbik in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She survives.

He served with the United States Army during World War II as a Sergeant.

He served in Normandy, northern France and in the Rhineland.

He was employed as a machinist for thirty-four years with the Rock Island Railroad and retired in 1979.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk and the International Association of Machinists for over sixty-two years.

He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and seldom missed a game.

He enjoyed coin collecting and going metal detecting with his dog.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Booker, of Keokuk, Iowa; three daughters, Sharilyn Carr and her husband, Bill of Keokuk, Marilyn Wixom and her husband, Bill of Keokuk, and Carilyn Booker-Wieland and her husband, Greg, of Princeton, New Jersey; grandchildren, David Skow of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Dana Davis of Honolulu, Hawaii, Melissa Krome of Keokuk, and Julee and Heidi Wixom of Keokuk; three step-grandchildren, Heidi, Jennifer, and Corry; several great grandchildren; and a sister, Louise Burlingame, of Mansfield, Massachusetts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; two sisters; and one grandson, Ryan Lee Wixom.

Graveside services were Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Keokuk National Cemetery with full military rites.

Pastor Dale Thomas officiated.

Burial followed the service.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Keokuk or to the Keokuk Humane Society.

Nancy Baxter

Nancy '“Twiggy'” Salyers Baxter, 57, of Keokuk, died Monday, February 22, 2004 at 6:25 A.M. at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Nancy Baxter was born icon on August 11, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arthur and Margaret L.McDaniel Salyers.

She married icon John Baxter on January 26, 1974 in Kahoka, Missouri. He survives.

She had been employed for eight years at Tipenbud Grill as a waitress and cook.

She was a member of the Victory Worship Center in Hamilton, Illinois.

She enjoyed woodcrafts, crocheting, and other types of crafts.

Survivors include her husband, John Baxter, of Keokuk, Iowa; two sons, Keith Thoman of Hamilton, Ohio and Thomas Wear of Quincy, Illinois; two daughters, Sue Egley and her husband, Robert, of Keokuk, Iowa and Lisa Baxter of Beaverdam, Kentucky; four sisters, Lena K. Salyers of Keokuk, Bonnie Milligan and her husband, David, of Keokuk, Connie Weisinger and her husband, Ed, of Basco, Illinois, and Theresa Corethers of Keokuk; and two brothers, David Salyers of Keokuk and Dan Salyers and his wife, Judy, of Burlington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary.

Graveside services were Thursday, February 26, 2004 at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk with Reverend Steve Swisegood officiating. Burial followed the service.

Earlene Barnes

Helen “Earlene” Barnes, 77, of Keokuk, died at 3:00 P.M., Sunday, February 13, 2005 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

She was born icon July 18, 1927 in Madrid, Iowa, the daughter of Carl Oscar Harry Samuelson and Nettie Mae Williams Samuelson.

She married icon Dallas E. Barnes on September 12, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa.

He preceded her in death on November 1, 1998.

She had lived in Keokuk since 1946.

She worked as a welder during World War II then as a clerk in small corner grocery stores.

During the 1950’s, she attended beauty school and then worked with her mother at Wise Beauty Shop.

In her early life she was a member of the Women’s National Bowling Association and took part in several bowling leagues and participated in national bowling tournaments. She was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

She enjoyed sewing and crocheting made many things for her kids.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and later with her sister. Her family was everything to her.

She is survived by a daughter, Sherry Rader and her husband, Edwin, of Keokuk; a son, Gary Barnes of Keokuk; ten grandchildren, Tracy Etter and her husband, Shane, of Keokuk, Dale Rader and his wife, Christina of Dubuque, Iowa, Adam Rader and Bret Rader of Iowa City, Iowa, Gina Parrish and her husband, Craig, of Keokuk, Erin Barnes of Oak Park, Illinois, Jason Barnes and his wife, Heather, of Keokuk, Kara Barnes of Oak Park, Illinois, Jordan Barnes and his fiancé, Leah Johnson, of Keokuk and Joshua Barnes of Keokuk; her sister, best friend and travel companion, Patricia Carlene Shotts of Revere, Missouri; two brothers, Merle Zwiefel of Revere, Missouri and Larry Wise of Mukwonago, Wisconsin; in-laws, Delbert and Edythe Barnes, Dorothy Barnes, Jeanette Barnes, Bonnie Berry, Jim and Elaine Barnes; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; stepfather Martin E. Wise who raised her; daughter-in-law, Deborah Harmon Barnes; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services were at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 18, 2005, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating.

Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery north of Keokuk.

Visitation was after 2:00 PM Thursday, February 17, with family meeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Thursday evening.

Memorials may be made to New Testament Christian Church.

Bernice Ballance

Bernice Ballance, 102, a former Keokuk High School teacher, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at 9:30 A.M. at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa.

Bernice Balance was born icon on July 17, 1902 in Lincoln, Nebraska.

She was the daughter of Samuel J. and Estella Berg Balance.

She attended Lincoln Public Schools and the University of Nebraska.

She graduated in 1924 with a B.A. degree and then earned an M.A Degree in 1948.

She also attended numerous graduate schools for post-graduate work. Besides teaching, she was also a certified school counselor.

She had lived in Keokuk since 1929 and had taught with the Keokuk Community School District from 1929 until her retirement in 1968.

She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity united Methodist Women’s Society, Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teacher’s Association, was a life member of I.S.E.A., and was a former member of AAUW and Grace Goddard Circle of King’s Daughters.

She was also a American Red Cross Bloodmobile volunteer.

Survivors include two nieces, Mary Rosenbaum of Vashon, Washington and Jean Thom and her husband, Leroy, of Hastings, Nebraska and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and a brother, all of Lincoln, Nebraska.

There were no local services.

Burial was in the Lincoln, Nebraska Memorial Park Cemetery.

Virginia B. Baker

Virginia B. (Brannock) Baker, 86, of Keokuk, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at 12:50 A.M. at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk, Iowa.

Virginia Baker was born icon on September 1, 1918 in Red Oak, Iowa. She was the daughter of Howard and Cecil Reimers Brannock.

She married icon Fred Baker in 1962.

He preceded her in death in 1974.

She had lived in Keokuk since October of 2001 after moving from Falls Church, Virginia.

She had spent most of her adult life in the Washington, D.C. area, coming to D.C. during the War years in the 1940’s.

She had worked in a number of government offices including the Pentagon and the House Ways and Means Committee.

Later on, she and her husband, Fred, had owned and operated Sterling Moving & Storage Company Falls Church, Virginia as Wheaton Van Lines operators.

Virginia was an active member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, the Falls Church Lions and Lioness Clubs, and was a long time volunteer and patron of the Kennedy Center.

Survivors include one sister, Lillian Brannock Sutlive of Keokuk, Iowa; two nephews, B. Howard “Howie” Sutlive and his wife, Amy of Keokuk, Iowa and Charles L. “Lindy” Baker and his wife, Evelyn, of Vienna, Virginia; and numerous great nieces and great nephews in Iowa and Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents of Red Oak, Iowa; her husband Fred of Falls Church; and aunts and uncles of the Reimers family also of Red Oak.

Graveside services were Friday, December 24, 2004 at the Evergreen Cemetery in Red Oak, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to the Resurrection Lutheran Church, 6201 N. Washington Blvd., Arlington, Virginia, 22205.

William Allison

William A. Allison, 88, of Quincy, Illinois, and formerly of Keokuk, Iowa, died at 4:45 AM Sunday, September 07, 2003, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He was born icon June 21, 1915, in Monmouth, Illinois, the son of A.E. and Etta Underwood Allison.

He married icon Lydia Stice on November 19, 1947 in Plainview, Texas.

She survives. He lived and farmed in Williamstown, Missouri for 22 years.

He then moved to Keokuk and worked for Redfern Real Estate in Donnellson, Iowa for 14 years.

He had lived in Quincy, Illinois for the past three years.

He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church of Keokuk.

He is survived by his wife, Lydia Allison of Quincy; three sons, Melvin J. Allison and his wife, Marlys, of Denmark, Iowa, William Gary Allison and his wife, Robin, of Smithville, Missouri and Cletus E. Allison of Bedford, Texas; two daughters, Mary Ruth Hudnut of Quincy, Illinois and Linda L. Gibleon and her husband, Elmer, of Quincy, Illinois; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two great great granddaughters; and one sister, Mary Ellen Evans of Keokuk, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, one sister, and a grandson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Rev. Donald Waterman officiating.

Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park in Keokuk.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church of Keokuk or White Fire Ministries, 1636 N. 5th, Quincy, Il. 62301.

Bernice Allen

Bernice Alberta Allen, 94, of Keokuk, died at 5:05 AM Saturday, October 11, 2003, at River Hills of Keokuk.

She was born icon May 1, 1909 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Grace Delma Brown Rockelmann.

She married icon Aubrey Allen on August 26, 1930 in Keokuk, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1991.

She had lived in the Keokuk area all her life.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Keokuk and was active in the ladies’ groups of the church and the Jenny Lee Sunday School class.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making candles and cooking. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker.

She is survived by a daughter, Jane Baum and her husband, Frank, of Keokuk; two granddaughters, Julie McCall and her husband, Mitch, of Keokuk and Brenda Baum of Maryville, Illinois; three great granddaughters, Bethanie Ashley, Leslie Ashley and Alexandra McCall, all of Keokuk; and several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Allen; her parents; a sister, Doris Sacasky; and a brother, Ross Rockelmann.

Funeral services were Monday, October 13, 2003 at First Christian Church in Keokuk with Rev. William S. Mitchell officiating.

Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to First Christian Church of Keokuk.
