Michael KEEGAN Dies at Lawler
Pioneer Man of Chickasaw County, Dies after a Few Months of Illness

Lawler Corr-- Mr. Michael KEEGAN, one of the long-time residents of Chickasaw County, passed away Thursday, January 23, 1930 at the age of 87 years. Mr. KEEGAN had been in failing health for a considerable time. He bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude, sustained by an unwavering faith, and when the final moment came he was ready for the call to the new life beyond the grave.

Michael KEEGAN was born icon in Brooklyn, NY, January 1, 1843. When a young man moved to Lyons, Iowa where in 1862 he was married icon to Bridget FOLEN. Three years later he moved to Chickasaw County where he purchased a farm near Lawler and resided there until he moved to Lawler in 1903, where he has resided ever since.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael KEEGAN were the parents of seven children. His aged wife and four children survive him. Three children preceded him in death. Michael of Minneapolis, Matt, who resides on the home farm, Mrs. Mary Jane NOLAN of Ironwood, Mich., Mrs. Nellie LEONARD of Lawler. He leaves 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Mr. KEEGAN always held to high ideals and was continually reaching out a helping hand to assist others on life’s journey. To know him was to esteem and honor him. To his family he was a devoted husband and father, and to those who knew him, a faithful friend. He had many excellent traits and character, and his life was filled with many acts of kindness and love.

The funeral was held at Mt. Carmel Church Saturday morning, mass for the dead being said by Reverend Father O’Donnell and interment was made in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Those who attended the funeral from away are, Mrs. Mary Jane NOLAN of Ironwood, Mich., Mrs. M.E. KEEGAN and sons, Basil and Cecil of Minneapolis, Miss Eileen LEONARD of Chicago, Stewart KANE and Pat FOLEN of St. Paul, Mrs. Anna DONNELLY and sons Paul and John, and Miss Bessie O’HOLLEARU of New Hampton.

Lewis Ross, 61, Dies on Sunday, Funeral Wed,
Died at Convalescent Home after Four Months Illness, Always a Resident of this County

Lewis Ross, aged 61 years, 11 months and three days, a lifelong resident of this county, died Sunday morning January 25, 1942 at 10:00 o’clock in the New Hampton convalescent home. Mr Ross had been seriously ill for the past four months.

Funeral Services were held Wednesday afternoon at 1:20 o’clock at the Perry Funeral Home and at 2:00 o’clock at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Reverend Theodore Fritschel was in charge. During the services, Mrs. Charles Doye sang.

Pall bearers were Sam BRUMMOND, Will WENTZ, Ben HOLSCHLAG, Bill HOLTZ, Chris BECKMAN and John JIRAK, all of this community.

Burial was in Graceland cemetery.

Lewis ROSS was born icon in Washington Township, Chickasaw County on February 23, 1880, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick ROSS. He was educated in the Tierney School in Washington Township and grew to young manhood there.

He married icon Augusta BECKER of New Hampton on February 12, 1903, and they went to housekeeping on a farm west of New Hampton. Several years ago they retired from the farm and moved to this city where they have since resided.

Mr ROSS was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was a kind and friendly man and was a devoted husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Jake HEISELMAN, seven daughters: Mrs. Louis COTANT (Leona) of Cresco, Mrs. Frank SCHOENFELD (Dora), Mrs. Ora CURTIS (Luella), Mrs. Edward BOEHMER (Clara), and Mrs. Oscar RANDALL (Stella) of New Hampton, and Mrs. Vincent UNDERWOOD (Elda) and Mrs. Kenneth YEARLING (Eleanor) of Chicago; thirty-one grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters: Mrs. Neil MAY of Rochester, Minnesota; Mrs. Frank HAUPT of Morristown, Minnesota; Mrs. Wm. SHAUGHNESSY of LaHarpe, Kansas; and Mrs. Charlie BARTZ of Ionia; and four brothers, Emil of Rochester, August of Winona, Minnesota; Henry of Oran and Fred of New Hampton.

A daughter and son preceded their father in death.

Tilda Elizabeth ANNETT

Tilda ANNETT Rites

Mrs Tilda ANNETT, 80, died Tuesday, October 10, at her home. Funeral services were held at 1:30pm Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Churchwith the pastor, Rev Bernard OEBSER, officiating. Ruth Ann UPHAM was soloist and Dorothy STOLZ was organist. Hymn selections included “Rock of Ages” and “Abide with Me”. Interment was in the New Hampton Cemetery with neighbors Lando MISHAK, James WILSON, Harold HEYING, Robert DEE, William MANDERFIELD and Vic DeBETTIGNIES serving as casketbearers.

Tilda Elizabeth GORDON was born icon January 22, 1898 in Chickasaw County, the daughter of John and Ingeborg (NUNDAHL THRONDSON) GORDON. She attended the rural schools and the Iowa School for the Deaf at Council Bluffs.

She was united in marriage May 18, 1936 in Manchester to Lloyd Densmore ANNETT. The couple had lived in New Hampton since their marriage.

Mrs ANNETT is survived by a daughter, Mrs Carl (Thelma) HESSE, Cedar Falls; a grandson, Thomas John Carl HESSE; and a sister, Mrs Irene ATTLESON, New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lloyd, on November 7, 1973; five brothers, Andrew, Alfred, Edward, Clarence and John GORDON, and one sister, Carrie.

Myrtle Sherbon

Myrtle Sherbon, 76, died Saturday, December 13, 2003. Services will be held Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Charles City. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Visitation will be from 4 til 8 p.m. today, Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Myrtle was born icon the daughter of Otto and Bertha (Thiem) Mohring. She was a life long member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City. This is also where she received the sacrament of Holy Baptism and Confirmation. Her greatest joy in life was her family and had recently extended that to include the "grandchildren" of the Foster Grandparent Program.

Left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Geneva (John) Rima of Charles City; a son, Darrell Sherbon of Charles City; and grandchildren, Miranda (Matthew) Temple of Charles City, Brant (Christina) Sherbon of St. Paul, Minn., Reggie Rima, Charles City; a great-grandchild, Chloe Temple of Charles City. Myrtle is also survived by two brothers, Alfred and Ervin (Madonna) both of Charles City; a sister, Margaret (Nate) Blanck of Waterloo; and two sisters-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Otto) Mohring of Charles City and Arlene (Mrs. Ernest) of Anamosa. Several nieces, nephews and friends will also cherish the memory of Myrtle.

Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Ernest and Otto (Jr.) Mohring and a sister, Doris Banks.

James F. LEWIS

JAMES LEWIS WAS BROUGHT HERE FOR BURIAL YESTERDAY
Is a brother of John Lewis of This City. Passed Away on Sunday at Rockford, Illinois. Former Resident Here.

It is with deep regret that relatives and old friends of James LEWIS learned of his death Sunday, July 23, 1933 at 7 p.m. at his home in Rockford, Illinois. He had attained the advanced age of 80 years, 4 months and 15 days.

James LEWIS, one of a family of twelve children, was a son of Samuel and Sarah LEWIS. He was born icon on March 11, 1853 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He came with his parents to Iowa on February 15, 1866.

When a young man he was married icon to Miss Ada A. LEWIS. After marriage they resided on a farm near New Hampton, later moving to New Hampton where he was engaged in occupation as a tower watchman and well driller. To this happy union nine children were born, all of who survive except one son, Lee. Children surviving are as follows: Mrs. James SMITH of Los Gatos, California, Mrs. Harry E. ALGER, George G. LEWIS and Charles LEWIS of Long Beach, California, Mrs. Hazel HOBBS of Los Gatos, California, James A. LEWIS of Oakland, California, Mrs. Sarah GRAY of Hollywood, California and Harry J. LEWIS of Kansas City, Missouri.

The family moved from here about thirty years ago to California, and about four years later moved to Rockford, Illionois, which has since been his home. His wife died in 1924. He was united in marriage to Mrs. Minnie SHARP on July 17, 1925.

Beside his second wife he also leaves to mourn his passing, sixteen grandchildren, one brother, John LEWIS of New Hampton and one sister, Mrs. Fred SOHN of Mason City.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the chapel in Rockford. The body arrived in New Hampton Tuesday night and was taken to the home of his brother, John, at which place the funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. Reverend F.W. Koenig conducted a brief prayer service and burial was made in Graceland Cemetery of this city.

Pallbearers were Ed JOHNSTON, Ed YOUNG, Henry GARDNER, Spencer DEAL, Fred LARSON and Alfred KELSON.

Relatives from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harry LEWIS and daughter, Virginia of Kansas City, Mrs. Fred SOHN and Mr. and Mrs. Harry FLEMING of Mason City and Mrs. Minnie LEWIS of Rockford, Illinois.

John R. VENEM

J.R. VENEM, 48
Victim of Pneumonia, Widow, Five Children, Brothers & Sisters Mourn Untimely Death

Dr. J. R. VENEM died unexpectedly at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 30, 1935 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness of ten days. He became ill April 20th and was confined to bed at his home on East Logan Street in this city until April 22nd when he was taken to the hospital suffering of lobar pneumonia which claimed his life a week later.

Thus death has reached twice into the same household within three weeks time, Mrs. VENEM's mother, Mrs. Robert A. LEWIS, having passed away on April 8th.

John Rudolph VENEM was born icon November 14, 1886, at Silver Lake, Worth County, Iowa, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thor VENEM. He was educated in the rural schools of Worth County, and graduated from the Palmer School of Chiropractic at Davenport in 1923.

He married icon Miss Christena WEIBERG who preceded him in death in 1919. To this union four children; namely, Miss Irene of Forest City, Alton of Grand Forks, Minnesota, Adrian and Eugene of Conger, Minnesota, were born.

On November 30, 1922, he was married icon to Miss Anna LEWIS in a ceremony read at New Hampton. After completing his chiropractic studies he entered into the profession in New Hampton, in which business he continued until 1934. He was employed as garden inspector for the county relief administration until his last short illness took him from his duties. To this union was born icon one son, Richard, now seven years old, who with his mother also are left to mourn his death.

The following four sisters and three brothers also survive; Mrs. Julia BECK of Los Angeles, California; Mrs Albert LAH of Leith, North Dakota; Mrs. Christine LARSON of Albert Lea, Minnesota; Mrs. Mary HEGGS of Merino, California; Knute VENEM of Leeds, North Dakota; Thomas VENEM of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and Anton VENEM of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The removal of Dr. VENEM from his family circle so early in life is indeed a severe bereavement. His widow has been doubly bereft in so short a length of time and our deepest sympathy is with her as well as with the children, brothers and sisters of the deceased.

Reverend W. W. Williams, pastor will conduct the final rites this afternoon at two o'clock at the home and 2:30 at the Baptist church. Burial will be made in Graceland Cemetery here.

Numerous relatives and friends from out-of-town are expected here today to pay their last respects.

Helen Snider

NASHUA - Helen L. (Trepton) Snider, 83, of Oconomowoc, Wis., formerly of Nashua, passed away Tuesday morning, December 9, 2003, in her home at Shorehaven Towers in Oconomowoc.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2003, at the United Methodist Church with burial at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Nashua. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the United Methodist Church. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.

Helen was born icon May 31, 1920, at Ionia, the daughter of Porter and Minnie (Boice) Hinmon. She graduated from Nashua High School in 1938 and attended Wartburg College. She was united in marriage to Harry Trepton in 1963. To this union three children were born. Following his death, Helen went back to Wartburg College and received her teaching degree. She taught at Plainfield for two years before starting at Nashua where she taught for 17 years before retiring. In 1976, she married icon Cliff Snider. He passed away on July 3, 1983. Helen moved to Oconomowoc in 1998. She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and did much volunteer work in her community. Helen enjoyed quilting, knitting, traveling with her family and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

She is survived by one son, David (Karen) Trepton of Oconomowoc, Wisc.; two daughters: Mary Ellen Jezoski of Kauauna, Wisc. and Ruth Ann (Ken) Goings of Elkader; two step-sons: Cliff "CH" (Kay) Snider of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Gary (Eileen) Snider of Forest City, Ark..; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry P. Trepton, in 1963; her second husband, Cliff Snider, in 1983; her parents; two sisters: Leona Bennor and Madge Hinmon.

Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Homes in Nashua is in charge of arrangements.

Ray Knapp BERRY

New Hampton - Ray Knapp BERRY, 83, died Monday, March 13 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene with Rev. Monsignor Walter BRUNKAN celebrating the Mass. The pall was placed on the casket by his wife and daughters. Lector for the service was Charles STANTON. The offertory gifts were presented by Lori SHEEHY, Angie SCHOLBROCK, Alex HUFFMAN and Cody SHEEHY. Eucharistic minister was Jerry ZIPSE.

Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Greene, with Jerry ZIPSE, Brad HUFFMAN, John SHEEHY, Donald HEREID, Ron LARSEN and Alan KING as pallbearers.

Visitation was held from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15 at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, where there was a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Further visitation was held an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday.

Ray was born icon in Greene, the son of Robert and Margaret (KNAPP) BERRY. He attended and graduated from Sacred Heart Schools in Greene. He moved to a farm near Lawler in 1939. On September 5, 1945 he married icon Margaret KING at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler. The couple lived around Lawler for a few years and moved to the New Hampton area in 1948 where they lived on area farms. Ray farmed his entire life and retired in 1989. He sold his farm in 1999 and became a resident of the New Hampton Care Center in January of this year.

Memberships include the Farm Bureau, St. Frederick's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg and he was a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Hampton. Ray always enjoyed going to Steam Engine Days, his family and music, especially listening to Lawrence WELK and Guy LOMBARDO.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; four daughters, Jeanne (Merlyn) ZIPSE, New Hampton, Donna (Mike) HUFFMAN, Cedar Falls, Janice BERRY, Osage and Pat BERRY, Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Beverly (Wayne) FITZPATRICK, Waverly.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Robert Jr. and Donovan in infancy; and one sister Avis MCGINN.

Leo M. BROST

Services for Leo M. BROST, 88, of 11303 Robin Road, who died at 5:05pm Thursday at the Marshfield Living Center where he had been a resident since Dec 12, will be at 10:30am Monday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church.

The Rev. Francis A. WAVRA will officiate. Helen BRINKMAN, organist, and Frank BINDER, soloist will provide music. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ronald, Robert, Randy and John BROST, Tom HARDINGER and Kevin and Craig THURS.

Visitation will be at Rembs/Kundinger Chapel at 4pm Sunday and again Monday until service time. A parish prayer service will be at 7pm Sunday at the funeral chapel.

He was born icon in New Hampton, Iowa Sept 12,1903 to Lambert and Margaret (MAY) BROST. He attended New Hampton schools. He married icon Elsie S. SHULTZ, May 11,1926 at St Andrew's Catholic Church in Rozellville.

As a young man in 1919, he moved with his parents from Iowa to the Rozellville area, where they farmed. Following marriage, he continued to farm there until 1939. They then moved to the town of Lincoln to farm. They farmed there until retiring in 1973, then moved to Marshfield for a short time and then returned to the town of Lincoln.

He was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He is survived by his wife; three sons, Vernon of Unity, Roman and Jerome, both of Chili; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Marion) THURS of Janesville and Mrs. Floyd F. (Rita) HARDINGER of Hewitt; one brother Lawrence of Marshfield, three sisters, Mrs. Loretta GRIESBACH of Stratford, Mrs. Henry (Dorothy) LINZMEIER of Auburndale, Mrs. Gust (Delphina) BLEICHROT of Muskego, 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and four sisters, and one granddaughter, Karen BROST on Jan 20,1990.
