Charles Ball

EXCELSIOR, Minn. - Charles A. Ball, age 37, of Excelsior, Minn., died Tuesday, October 21, 2003, as a result of injuries he sustained in an automobile accident in Chanhassen, Minn.

Charles "Chuck" Andrew Ball was born icon on July 2, 1966, to Norman and Geraldine (Ferch) Ball in Charles City. Chuck married icon Diana Mancino in Minneapolis, Minn. on June 1, 1997. They later divorced.

Chuck was a talented and gifted chef who took great pride in preparing a meal and then enjoying it with friends and family. Chuck had a great enthusiasm for life and especially treasured the gift of being a loving and attentive father to his two sons, Gabriel and Julian. Chuck woke up with a smile on his face and possessed an attitude that things were good in life.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 24, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Johnson-Peterson Funeral Home, St. Paul, Minn., with his cousin, the Rev. Brian Shepley, officiating.

Chuck was a beloved father, son and grandson and is survived by his mother, Geraldine Ferch, Cedar Rapids; and his father, Norman Ball, Muscatine. Also surviving are his two sons, Gabriel and Julian, both of St. Paul, Minn.; his former wife, Diana Mancino, St. Paul, Minn.; his brother, Bruce Ball (Janet), Iowa City; one nephew, Andrew Ball, Iowa City; his grandmothers, Irene Ferch, Charles City and Ruth Ball, Duncombe; and an aunt, Carol (Mrs. Stephen) Kuhn, Indianola, Iowa; and an uncle, Tim Ferch (Barrie), Duluth, Minn.

Chuck was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Gerald Ferch and Leonard Ball. Also killed in the accident that claimed Chucks life was his special friend, Lynn Marie Hines, Excelsior, Minn.

Memorials may be made to a special fund set up for Chucks sons, Gabriel and Julian. May he rest in peace.

Fred Perry

Fred C. Perry, 45, a resident of 903 5th Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, October 30, 2003, near Floyd of natural causes.

A funeral Mass for Fred Perry will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Walter Brunkan, pastor of St. Marys Catholic Church at Greene, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City. Military Honors will be conducted by the Charles City National Guard.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church an hour prior the Mass.

Fred Charles Perry was born icon June 29, 1958, at Charles City, the son of Fred D. and Joybelle (Busch) Perry. He graduated from the Charles City High School in 1978. Fred was a 20-year military veteran with service in the active Army and the Iowa National Guard. On May 6, 2000, he was united in marriage to Rhonda Kepple at Greene. He was currently employed at Winnebago Industries. His memberships included the American Legion of Greene, the Charles City V.F.W., AMVETS, and Pheasants Forever. Freds interests included hunting, fishing, and being with his dog, Quiz. The time spent with his family was of great importance but most of all it was the time spent with his daughter Olivia.

Living family members include his wife, Rhonda of Charles City; a daughter, Olivia of Charles City; his mother, Joybelle Perry of Charles City; two sisters, Mary Knecht and Missy (Jaymes) Fannon both of Charles City; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and great nieces and nephews.

His father, paternal grandparents, Grant and LaVyna Perry, maternal grandparents, John and Mary Busch, and several uncles preceded him in death.

Romanzo D. SPENCER

R. D. SPENCER of Bradford died at his home on thursday February 6, 1890. R. D. SPENCER was born icon April 27, 1845 at Marengo, Ill. He was married icon to Mary J. PENN, March 17, 1868. He moved to Bremer Co. Iowa in 1860 then to Bradford in 1869 where he lived until his death.

He enlisted in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry December 1, 1863 was discharged Aug 1865. His death was caused by lung trouble, contracted in the army while serving his country, but bore his pains and suffering with patience.

He was a loving husband and father. A good neighbor, loved and respected by all who knew him, always ready to do someone a kind act. Every one who knew him will mourn his death as a loss of a true friend.

The funeral was held at the Congregational Church, Bradford, last Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. Rever Packared officiating.

CARRIE GROVE

MRS. CARRIE GROVE DEAD AT AGE 85
SPLENDID PIONEER WOMAN, RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY NEARLY SIXTY YEARS, BURIED IN GRACELAND CEMETERY

Mrs Carrie GROVE died in her home in Richland Township, Thursday morning July 21, 1927 at the age of 85 years.

She suffered a slight sroke of paralysis two years ago from which she never recovered. On June 10th she suffered a second stroke, followed by hypothetical pneumonia. Death came as a blessed relief after a week of intense suffering.

The deceased, Carrie CHRISTENSEN was born icon at Lardahl, Norway on Aug. 25, 1842. She came to America at the age of 20 years, to the home of a married icon sister in Janesville, Wisconsin.

On October 26, 1868 she was united in marriage with Mr. Peter T. GROVE of Stoughton, Wis. and they immediately came to the fine home in Jacksonville Township that had been prepared for her. They traveled by train to Calmar which was the end of the railroad in those pioneer days. When they were ready to leave Calmar they discovered his team had broken out and returned home. Then Mr. GROVE walked to Jacksonville got his team and drove back to Calmar for his bride.

To this union, ten children were born, eight of whom survive their mother, who died Thursday and their father who died 12 years ago. They are Charles, Montana; Theodore of Hickley, Minnesota, Mary, Minneapolis, Abner, Gilman, Susie, William, and Pearl all of this county. One daughter Mrs. Julia WENTZ died about 5 years ago and one son who died in infancy.

The deceased also had twenty-three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs. GROVE was a member of the Lutheran faith. He funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Christian church at Republic. Rev. Harry SECOR of the Baptist church in New Hampton officiated at the services. Burial was made in Graceland Cemetery.

The deceased spent most of her life in Chickasaw County, living in Jacksonville and Richland Townships.

She was a very excellent pioneer wife and mother, neighbor and friend. She reared a monument to her credit in the excellent boys and girls she gave birth to and to which they gave their family name.

Few of us will live as long and as well and fewer yet will the Angel of Death greet with such a loving touch.

To her children we extend sympathy in their sorrow.

Funeral Saturday for Mrs. Jacob Heiselmann, 84
Died Thursday Morning After a Long Illness from Heart Disease, Burial in Graceland

Mrs. Jacob HEISELMAN of this city died Thursday morning June 11, (1942) at her home on Pleasant Hill Avenue after an illness of two and a half years with heart disease. For the past two months she has been confined to her bed. She would have been 84 years of age the day of her funeral.

Wilhelmine Laemke [LEMBKE] was born icon June 13, 1858, in Mecklenburg, Germany. She came to this county when a young girl and lived for a short time in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She then came to this county which has since been her home.

Her marriage to Fred ROSS took place on September 9, 1877. Eleven children were born icon to them, three of whom preceded their mother in death. Those surviving are Fred ROSS of New Hampton; Mrs. Charles BARTZ of Ionia; Mrs. Frank HAUPT of Morristown, Minnesota; Mrs. Neils MACK of Rochester, Minnesota; August ROSS of Winona, Minnesota; Emil ROSS of Rochester; Mrs. Wm. SHAUGHNESSY of LaHarpe, Kansas; and Henry ROSS of Oran, Iowa.

Mr. ROSS died January 30, 1922, and on October 20, 1931, she was married icon to Jacob HEISELMAN of this city who survives her. She also leaves four stepchildren, Otto HEISELMAN, Mrs. H. CUTSFORTH and Mrs. Wm. SCHMIDT of New Hampton and Mrs. Herman SCHULTZ of Freeport, Illinois, thirty-five grandchildren, fifty-seven great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Throughout the years of her residence in this vicinity, she was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and always took an active interest in its work and progress. She was a good wife and mother, devoted to her family and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the Perry Funeral Home and at 2:00 o’clock at the St Paul’s Lutheran Church with Reverend Theodore Fritschel in charge.

Her coffin was borne by Wm. KAMMEYER, Lou KATZ, Wm. HOLZ, Wm. ZICKUHR, Herman VICK and Clarence ROHMER, all of New Hampton. Burial was in Graceland Cemetery.

Howard Begeman

Howard Begeman, 81, a former resident of 1719 Rotary Park Road, Charles City, died Monday, October 27, 2003, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Howard Begeman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Paul Wilcox, pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Howard George Begeman was born icon July 19, 1922, at Charles City, the son of Theodore and Irene (Smith) Begeman. He received his education at Charles City. Howard farmed in the Charles City area all of his life. His interest in electronics was evident as he owned and operated Begeman TV for forty years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Living family members include a sister, Donna (Thomas) Oliver of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene Begeman Caruth and Theodore Begeman.

Michael E. SLINDEE

Former US Treasurer Dies At Hospital Here
Mike SLINDEE To Be Buried In National Cemetery

Death claimed a prominent Chickasaw County man Monday, Sept 30, at 9:20am when Michael E. SLINDEE died at the St Joseph's Hospital as the result of a cerebral hemorrhage which he suffered Sept 13. He had been confined to the hospital since that time. He was 76 years old.

Mr SLINDEE served in government work for 45 years and at one time held the post of United States Treasurer.

Private funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Perry's Chapel. The body was shipped to Washington, D.C., Wednesday, where it will lie in state Thursday at the Hines Funeral Home. Burial will be Friday in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors, the traditional caisson cortege to be accorded. At the time of his death, Mr SLINDEE held the rank of Major in the Army Reserve Corps.

A military escort of the remains to the depot was provided by Fae Stine Post of the American Legion, New Hampton. Mr SLINDEE was a member of George Washington Post, No. 1, Washington, D.C.

Michael Edward SLINDEE was born icon May 22, 1881, at Lawler, the son of Erick and Gertrude (NORTHNESS) SLINDEE.

He was a business graduate of Valpariso University, Valpariso, IN, and of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., where he completed a four-year law course and was awarded degrees of L.L.B. and L.L.M. He was a member of the District Bar and was admitted to practice before the supreme court. He also was a graduate of the American Institute of Banking.

In 1905, Mr SLINDEE was appointed as clerk in the office of the treasurer of the United States and served continuously but for a period during World War I, in which conflict he saw duty as a lieutenant in chemical warfare.

Shortly after he was appointed to the treasurer's office, he was assigned to the National Redemption Agency and progressed to hold the superintendency of that branch of government work.

In 1936, SLINDEE was named administrative assistant to the treasurer and later named deputy and acting treasurer. After the death of United States Treasurer William R. JULIAN, in May of 1949, Mr SLINDEE served briefly as treasurer under a special presidential commission. Because he was nearing retirement, he declined the post as treasurer.

Mr SLINDEE retired from government work Dec 30, 1950 after 45 years of faithful service to his country. Since that time he had spent the summers with his brother, Jim, and sister, Mae, on the SLINDEE farm north of Lawler. Winters were spent at Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mr SLINDEE is survived by two sisters, Mae SLINDEE, Lawler; Mrs Herman (Carrie) NATVIG, Decorah; two brothers, James and Carl, Lawler; three nieces, Carol SLINDEE, Rochester, MN; Mrs John (Gertrude SLINDEE) O'KEEFE, of Washington, D.C., and Gertrude (NATVIG) WORCESTER, San Antonio, Texas; three nephews, Edward SLINDEE, Elmhurst, IL; Herbert and Cliff NATVIG, both of Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Lavernus Friend

Lavernus V. Friend, 86, of Charles City, died Sunday, October 26, 2003 at home. Funeral Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., Charles City. Officiant will be Rev. Gregory Ellcey, First Congregational Church. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Memorials may go to the family.

Lavernus V. Vandeventer was born icon January 10, 1917 in Charles City, the daughter of Ernest and Grace (Naber) Vandeventer. She attended Charles City schools, and on March 23, 1935 she was united in marriage to Ivan L. Friend in Osage. Lavernus loved playing cards and fishing, and sewing clothes for dolls was also a favorite hobby.

Lavernus is survived and lovingly remembered by her son Gerald Friend and his wife Elynor of Charles City; four grandchildren: Gail Fast and her husband Duane, Michael Friend, Matthew Friend and his wife Louan, and Patrick Friend. She is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and a brother Raymond Vandeventer and his wife Ella, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Lavernus was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, an infant daughter, four sisters, and four brothers.

Marie Katherine Kay

Marie Katherine Kay, 88, formerly resided at 2521 Timber Ave., Charles City, died Monday afternoon, October 20, 2003, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home, in Charles City.

A Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 106 Chapel Lane in Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with the rosary recited at 5 p.m. and the vigil wake service at 7:00 p.m. at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City and visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Marie Katherine Kay was born icon May 8, 1915, in rural Greene, Iowa, the daughter of Mathias and Katherine (Kohlhaas) Frascht. Marie was united in marriage to Clarence Kay on December 31, 1937. Clarence and Marie worked together as farmers in the Charles City area. In 1956, they resided and farmed at the Carrie Lane Chatman Katt house south of Charles City. Later the couple moved two miles South on Timber Ave. where they continued to farm and later retired. Marie was a wonderful housekeeper and cook. Marie was a devout member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge and the auxiliary circle. Marie was fun loving and enjoyed entertaining in her home. Playing cards, cooking, gardening and embroidering were her pastimes. Maries grandson Philip was most precious to her. She will be most remembered for her sense of humor and her devotion to her family.

She is survived by her son, Duane Kay and his wife, JoAnn of Charles City; her sister, Ellen Schrage of St. Ansgar; her grandson, Philip Kay of Waterloo. Marie will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Kay in September of 1999; a daughter, Cheryl Ann Kay on October 13, 1945; her parents and five brothers, Bernard, Leo, Joseph, Louis and Burt Frascht.

Augusta ROSS

Augusta Ross Services Held Wednesday

Mrs. Augusta B. ROSS, 88, died in a Waterloo hospital Sunday morning at 7:30 of complications of advanced age. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. John M. Rohde officiating. Mrs. Galen Duneman provided the organ music and internment was in the New Hampton Cemetery.

Augusta BECKER was born icon August 16, 1879, in Germany, the daughter of Fred and Minnie BECKER. On Feb 12, 1903, she became the bride of Louis ROSS in New Hampton. She lived in New Hampton until the death of her husband in 1942. Since that time she has made her home in Waterloo with her daughter, Mrs. Ora Curtis.

She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Dora SCHOENFELD of Ionia, Mrs. Ora (Luella) CURTIS of Waterloo, Mrs. Oscar (Stella) RANDALL of New Hampton, Mrs. Eleanor YEARLING and Mrs. Vincent (Elda) UNDERWOOD of Chicago, 36 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, Louis, in infancy, three daughters, Frieda, in infancy, Mrs. Ed (Clara) BOEHMER and Mrs. Louis (Leona) COTANT, two sisters and two brothers.
