Bassett Pioneer Died At Age 84 Years
Spent 76 Years In Iowa and Lived in Deerfield Twp For About 68 Years

Bassett Crn. - John TRASK, son of S.B. and Rebecca TRASK, was born icon at Deerfield Massachusetts, August 19, 1845, and died at this farm home, three miles northwest of Bassett, Iowa May 1, 1930, aged 84 years and 8 months and 12 days.

He came to Iowa at the age of eight years and has spent 76 years in this state and came to Deerfield Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa sixty eight ago and has since that time been a resident here.

He was united in marriage with Miss Lucy A. JENKINS at New Hampton, Iowa, October 15, 1868 and to this union six children were born. His wife preceded him in death, on April 19 of this year, just 13 days previous to his own departure.

He leaves to mourn his departure the following children: William H. Trask of Bassett, Iowa; Ethel A., now Mrs. Oscar FREDERICI of Ionia; Hattie, now Mrs Louis NYHAN of Waterloo; and Evelyn, now Mrs. Bert MICHAEL of Charles City, Iowa, also fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Two children, Emily and Charles, preceded their parents in death. Mr. TRASK was a man of sterling integrity and lived an honorable and upright life, ever taking an active part in the business of the farm until sickness and the infirmities of old age interfered. A true pioneer, he was endured to hardship and knew how to meet the varied problems of the early days on the prairie of Iowa.

Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. G.A. Hess, pastor of the First Christian Church of Charles City Iowa, at the Bassett Community Church, Saturday afternoon, May 3, 1930 with interment at Rowley Hill cemetery.

Francis GALLIGAN

Services were held Friday, Oct. 31, for Francis A. GALLIGAN, 86 at St. Joseph's Church In New Hampton. Mr. GALLIGAN died Wednesday, Oct. 29, at St. Joseph Community Hospital after a six-month illness.

He was born icon July 29, 1889, in Lawler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip GALLIGAN. He attended the Lawler grade and high schools and college at St. Joseph's Academy in Dubuque. He had been employed as a salesman for Whitehouse Biscuit Co. of Dubuque and Schulz and Burch of Davenport and for a short time as a floor covering salesman with Kennedy Department store in New Hampton.

He was married icon to Edna M. DAILY, September 19, 1917 and was the father of a daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Geraldine) KENNEDY, a son, Tom GALLIGAN, Waterloo; and two deceased children, Mrs. Len (Frances) NABAK, and Patricia in infancy. He is survived by his wife, with whom he had lived in the Lawler, Dubuque, Calmar, and New Hampton areas.

He is survived by 12 grandchildren and 5 grade grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Ann O'NEILL, Mason City. Other brothers and sister, now deceased, included: Mrs. James (Josie) FEENEY, Dr. Clem GALLIGAN, and Carl GALLIGAN.

He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Larkin - Martin Funeral Home was in charge.

Rev. E. J. McNulty and Rev. Gerald Shekelton, chaplain at Mount Loretta Presentation Convent in Dubuque and St. Joseph Community Hospital Chaplain Rev. Alphonse Elsbernd offered the funeral Mass. The St. Joseph's School children's choir and Sister Mary Damian, of the Mount Loretta convent, sang hymns. Interment was in the St. Joseph Cemetery in New Hampton.

Pallbearers included grandsons: Robert GALLIGAN, Carroll; Patrick GALLIGAN, Cedar Rapids; Timothy GALLIGAN, Lexington, KY; William NABAK, Green Bay, Wis.; Daniel KENNEDY, New Hampton; and Edward KENNEDY, New Hampton.

Relatives and friends came from Waterloo, Iowa City, Carroll, Dubuque, Mason City, Cedar Rapids, Charles City, Lawler, Calmar, Green Bay, Wis., Chicago, Ill., Janesville, Wis., Minneapolis, Minn., La Crosse, Wis., West Bend, Wis., Lexington, Ky., St. Peter, Minn., Humbolt, Greene, Cedar Falls, and Algona.

Dorthea Dorie Beardmore

Dorthea Dorie Beardmore, 83, a resident of Charles City, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003, at the 9th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Dorie Beardmore will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Gregory Ellcey, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

The family will greet friends at the church an hour prior to the service.

Doretha Spaulding Beardmore was born icon October 4, 1919, at Fargo, ND, the daughter of Charles and Laura (Young) Spaulding. She graduated from Waseca High School, Waseca, Minn., and from the University of Iowa. On April 15, 1942, she was united in marriage to Alfred Beardmore at Waseca, Minn. In 1946 they moved to Charles City.

Dorie worked as a rehabilitation counselor. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and the P.E.O. Her interests included traveling, music, and watching University of Iowa football. Dorie took special interest in the Charles City Public Library, and the Charles City Arts Center.

Living family members include a son, Tom and daughter-in-law Barbara Beardmore of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; a brother, Horace Spaulding of Dallas, Texas; and a sister Cecily Spaulding of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1996, a daughter, Laird Ling, and a sister, Janet Spaulding.

The Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City is in charge of arrangements.

ROY GROVE

ROY GROVE SERVICES

Funeral services for Roy GROVE were held Saturday, August 5, 1989, at 11:00 a.m. at the Garden City Methodist Church in Monona, Rev. Gary Dobbins officiated. Organist was Priscilla Miene and soloist was Carole Gerdes. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Jack GOLTZ, Don WIRKLER, Harvey LANDT, Elmer RADLOFF, George SMITH, Bob JACOBSON, Vern HUPFER, and Marlyn HENDERSON.

Active pallbearers were Ned FOX, Larry DAWSON, Wayne LANDT, Lester HENDERSON, Andy WOLD, and Kermit KLINGE. Schultz’s Funeral Home in Monona was in charge of services.

Roy Louis GROVE was born icon March 11, 1910 near New Hampton, Iowa in Chickasaw County, to parents Abner and Julia SCHOENFELD GROVE. He was baptized in The Christian Republic Church, Republic, Iowa. He received his education in the New Hampton Schools graduating from high school in 1928. He attended Iowa State University in Ames and received a teaching certificate.

On December 25, 1930 Roy was united in marriage to Marvelyn Alice TRUSTY at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. To this union three children were born. Roy taught school in Klemme and Stanley, Iowa. In 1940 he moved to Monona where he owned and operated the Grove Feed Mill and Hatchery until 1987.

Roy died at his home Wednesday, August 2, 1989. He was a member of the Brotherlove Masonic Lodge #204, Shriners, Monona Kiwanis, and Garden City United Methodist Church. He also served on the school board.

Preceding him in death were his parents and three brothers, Charles, Lynn, and Grant GROVE.

Surviving are his wife, Marvelyn; one son and wife, Dennis and Margaret GROVE of Harpers Ferry; two daughters and their husbands, Jacquelyn and Alan BUTTERFIELD of Stillwater, Minn., and Judith and Gaylord OELKE of Monona; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three brothers Laurence and Glen of New Hampton and Warren (Bill) of New Hartford, Ia; and one sister, Hazel HANLEY of Vancouver, Wash.

John "Jack" Dailey

John "Jack" Dailey, 67, a resident of 900 10th Street, Charles City, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

A funeral Mass for Jack Dailey will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. Stanley Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday where the St. Francis Circle will recite the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and where there will be a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. followed by the Rosary being recited by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior the Mass.

John "Jack" Charles Dailey was born icon November 13, 1935, in Greene, the son of Bernard and Marian (Crimmings) Dailey. He graduated from Manly High School and attended college at St. John University and Loras College. Jack served in the United States Army. On April 25, 1959, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Gerhartz at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. He worked for a number of years at Jensen Brothers Locker and then until retirement at Salsbury Laboratories/Solvay. Jack was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, was 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus, and had served as Grand Knight and as District Deputy. Among his pastime activities were golfing, playing cards, traveling, and gambling, with his favorite being driving "MY PKUP". He appreciated visiting with his coffee club friends. His family took first place in his life and the time spent with them was always very important.

Living family members include his wife, Cynthia of Charles City; three children, Pat (Susan) Dailey of Charles City, Mike (Jolyn) Dailey of Johnston, and Jean (Joseph) Weber of Brandon; 10 grandchildren, Tim, Matthew, Shannon, Ian, Joseph, and Aaron Dailey, and Christopher, Alex, Jenna, and Jacob Weber; a brother, Bernard Thomas (Evelyn) Dailey of Greene; and a sister, Marlene (Ray) Brinker of Toledo, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MRS. CARRIE GROVE

RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 59 YEARS DIES THURSDAY

IONIA - Mrs. Carrie GROVE resident of Chickasaw County for 59 years and of Richland township for 55 years passed away at her home on July 21, 1927.

She suffered a stroke of paralysis on June 10 which left her right side helpless. The last week she suffered intensely from pneumonia caused from her weakened heart. Everything possible was done to relieve her suffering but to no avail.

Carrie CHRISTENSON was born icon in Norway, August 25, 1842, came to America when she was 20 years old lived at Janesville, Wisconsin, until she married icon Peter T. GROVE on Oct. 26, 1868. They came to Iowa at once and lived on a farm in Jacksonville Township four miles north of New Hampton for four years. Then they moved to Richland Township on a farm one-half mile east of her present home, where she lived for 26 years.

At that time there were no railroads to New Hampton, only cow paths for roads, and no bridges across the Wapsie. She endured all the hardships of a pioneer mother.

When a very young girl she was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith and clung to this all her life. Almost her last conscious thought was prayer to her Lord and Master.

Her husband passed away twelve years ago, one child in infancy and Mrs. Julia WENTZ five years ago.

The children living are Charles of Lee, Montana; Theodore of Danbury Wis.; Mary of Minn.; Gilman of Dayton Township; Pearl, Abner of Richland Township and Susie and William lived with their mother. She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Sarah MAE of Stoughton, Wis.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The funeral was held at the Christian Church at Republic. Rev. Hary SECOR of the New Hampton Baptist church officiated and interment was in Richland Cemetery by the side of her husband.

EMILY ANN TRUSTY

OLD RESIDENT OF IONIA PASSED AWAY

Emily Ann PETERSON was born icon at Bonehead, Canada, on Oct. 9th, 1849, and died at her home in Ionia on Dec. 5th, 1914, ages 65 years, 1 month, and 26 days.

In 1850 she came to Illinois with her parents where they resided until the fall of 1864 when they removed to Chickasaw County, settling on a farm one mile north of Ionia.

On Dec. 19th, 1866 she was united in marriage to Alfred HUFFMAN, who died Oct. 8, 1867. This union was blessed with one daughter, Alfretta. On April 28, 1870, she was united in marriage to Enoch T. TRUSTY, who preceeded her to the other shore on the 16th day of April 1914. To this union seven children were born, all of whom are still living. Deceased leaves to mourn her death, two brothers, Nathan PETERSON, of Dawson, N.D. and Solomon PETERSON, of Marshalltown, Iowa, one sister, Mrs. Mary M. QUAIFE of Traverse City, Mich, five sons, William of Waterloo, Vernor of Ocheyedan, Raymond of Lancaster, Cal.; Lester and Leo of Ionia; two daughters, Mrs. Alfretta YOUNG, of Chickasaw and Mrs. Emma PARRISH, of Reinbeck, also two stepsons, Andrew of Farley, Minn., Alonzo, of Waterloo, and one step daughter, Mrs. Alice GERHOLT of Ionia, eighteen grandchildren, also two great grandchildren.

She was one of the charter members of the Congregational Church, of Ionia, a lady of fine mind and a wife, mother, friend, and citizen she was true to every responsibility and did what she could for the good of her fellows.

She was modest and retiring, cared for her home and the loved ones with marked fidelity and served God sincerely and with a great love for the things of the Spirit. She was a great sufferer being afflicted with cancer of the stomach, but complained but little, fortified as she was with the promises of the gospel and her sublime faith in God.

The funeral was held Monday, Dec. 7th, from the Congregational Church in Ionia, services conducted by the pastor and the interment was beside her husband in Riverside Cemetery at Chickasaw.

Samuel LEWIS

Mr. Samuel LEWIS passed away at his home in this city, Wednesday, January 17, 1912, at 11:20 a.m.

Deceased was born icon December 18, 1825, in Indiana, Indiana County, Penn. There he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah JOHNSTON on January 6, 1848. In 1866 they came to New Hampton and settled on their property just north of the Milwaukee depot, where they have since resided and where he died.

Eleven children were born icon to them; Two sons and one daughter died in infancy; Mrs. Bert WOOD died a number of years ago and Irvin died at the age of thirty years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by the following children; William J. of Magalia, Calif., James, of Rockford, Ill., Mrs. Mary JACKSON, of St. Paul, R.A. LEWIS, J.F. LEWIS, and Mrs. Fred SOHN of this city.

The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the home, conducted by Rev. Harry Secor of the Baptist Church, and interment will be in Graceland cemetery.

Mr. LEWIS was interested in the oil wells of the east and after moving here was engaged in the manufacture of brick, making a good share of the brick used in the buildings on Main Street.

Samuel LEWIS was a man of few words, but expressed his sentiments always in a quiet manner that was very impressive; a man of the strictest integrity, he done his work well, his word was as good as a bond, kind and loving to his family, ready to sacrifice at any time for their comfort. As a husband he was always true to the wife of this choice and for her nothing obtainable was too good; as a friend he was true as steel; as a citizen, loyal to his country, he lived right before the world, met reverses with courage and kept faith not only with others but with himself, scorned little petty meanness, a peacemaker all the time and had the attributes of manhood that make a good neighbor, citizen, father and husband.

Mr. LEWIS was a man who left the world better for his having lived in it and bequeaths to his children an unsullied name and the memory of a good father.

His aged wife has the sympathy of this entire community and will retain their respect and esteem while she lingers here awaiting for the call to join him who passed over to the better land.

Barbara Fisher

Barbara Fisher, 74, of Charles City, died Saturday, October 11, 2003, at her home.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, October 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley Hayek officiating. There will be no visitation. Interment will be at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the immaculate Conception Catholic Church. As to her wishes, Barbaras body was donated to the University of Iowa.

Anna Mary GANSER

Funeral Services Are Held Monday For Mrs. H. GANSER
Died Thursday in Milwaukee

Mrs. Hillard GANSER died Thursday, April 14, 1938 at Miseracordia Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis., where she had been two months.

Anna Mary BROST, oldest daughter of John and Katharine BROST was born icon November 16, 1871, at Marytown, Wis. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Stacyville.

On May 3, 1898, she was united in marriage to Hillard GANSER, and from that time on until this spring, they engaged in farming. Renting the farm, they purchased a home in town and two days after moving, she went to Milwaukee.

To this union seven children were born: Gerald, Richard, Pauline, Mary, Lawrence, Maurice, and Paul who died April 29, 1922. All the children were present at the funeral.

Mrs. GANSER was a devout christian woman, active in church work, a member of the Christian Mothers Society of Visitation Church, and a most wonderful neighbor. Her death has brought bitter sorrow to her husband and family, relatives and a legion of community and distant friends.

She is survived by her husband and children, three brothers, John, Canby, Minn.; Math, California; Anton, St. Paul. Minn.; Sister Mary Stella, Charter Oak, Iowa, and Mrs. Julia JASPER, Bovey, Minn., and six grandchildren.

Staceyville, Iowa funeral services were held Monday morning, April 18, 1938, at 9:00 a.m., at Visitation Church and burial in Visitation Cemetery.

Out-of-town relatives who were present at the funeral were: John BROST, Canby, Minn.; Anton BROST, St. Paul; Mrs. Julia JASPER and daughter Lavona, Bovey, Minn.; Sister Mary Stella, Charter Oak, Iowa; Mrs. Lambert BROST, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest BROST, Stratford, Wis,; Mrs. Galen JASPER, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph BRUCE, Alta Vista, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald GANSER and son, Indianapolis, Indiana; Richard GANSER, Mr. and Mrs. Ray EICHHORST, Milwaukee, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Wallace VAN BREE, Racine, Wis.; Lawrence GANSER, Ft. Lewis, Washington; Maurice GANSER, Indinapolis, Indiana; George GANSER, Susan GANSER, Miss Gertrude MOLITOR, Sauk City, Wis; Mrs. Frank PULVERMACHER and daughter, Mrs. Lloyd BITTNER and daughter, Lodi, Wis.; Rev. Arthur HALBACH, Dyersville, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Peter HALBACH, Floyd, Iowa; Mrs. Anna WEBER, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer EARLY and two daughters, and Miss Margaret WEBER, St. Paul, Minn.
