Mary Ann SCHOENFELD

AGED RESIDENT OF IONIA PASSES AWAY SEPT. 12

Ionia-- Mary Ann ERION, eldest daughter of Conrad and Jane ERION was born icon at Buffalo, New York on Jan. 3, 1862, and died September 12, 1944 at 8:30 p.m., at the St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton at the age of 82 years, 8 months, and 9 days.

While Mary was still a small girl her parents move to Joliet, Illinois, and after a short ime, they moved to Chickasaw County, Iowa, on a farm two miles east of Alta Vista. Here she grew to womanhood and on October 11, 1884 she was united in marriage to William SCHOENFELD and they immediately went to housekeeping on the farm 2 1/2 miles southeast of Ionia, living there for 33 years at which time they moved into their new home in Ionia where seh lived until she was taken from her family and many friends.

Mary SCHOENFELD was a member of the Evangelical Church all her married icon life, but enjoyed working with the Congregational Church in Ionia in her later years. She had been in failing health for many years, but was always patient and cheerful. Sincer her husband died seven years ago she has been making her home partly with her children and partly at her own home.

She leaves to mourn her departure her children, Mrs. Julia GROVE and Louis of Ionia. Ms. Minnie KILLEBREW of Nebo, Illinois, Mrs. Elda McCULLUM of New Hampton, Edward of Nashua and Fred of Grundy Center, Iowa. She also leaves three brothers and one sister, George ERION of Summit, S.D., Will ERION of Salem Oregon, Conrad ERION of Orchard, Iowa, and Mrs. Rose ARNDT of New Hampton, Iowa. There also are 22 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Friday from the Chenowith Funeral Home in Nashua on Friday afternoon, September 15. Rev. Bird officiated. During the service two hymns, "Going Down the Valley," and "Old Rugged Cross" were sung by Mrs. Mable Waite and Ralph Watts. Mrs. Hugh McIlroy and Mrs. Rod Parrish were in charge of the flowers.

Pallbearers were Dan DUDLEY, Joe KIRNER, Ray HUFFMAN, Herm RANSOM, L. B. TRUSTY, and Henry QUAIFE. Her body was placed in the family lot in Greenwood beside her husband. All the children except her daughter, Mrs. Minnie KILLEBREW were able to be with their mother to the last.

Those from away attending the funral were her brothers, George ERION of Summit, S.D., Conrad of Osage, her sister Mrs. Rose ARNDT, New Hampton, Mrs. Carrie SCHURZ, her sister-in-law and son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Charles SCHURZ, Marshall Minn., besides relatives and friends from Waterloo, Grundy Center, Charles City, Mason City, Fayette and many from this county.

With the passing of this fine lady the county loses one more of its pioneers.

Bernard SWEENEY

Bernard Sweeney died February 21, 1906, in York, Nebraska, aged 74 years.

Deceased was born icon in County Kavan, [Cavan] Ireland. In his young manhood he came to America and located in Pennsylvania and in 1864 to Buchanan County, Iowa, and from there in 1871 to Chickasaw County, Iowa, where he lived until about eighteen years ago, when he removed to York, Nebraska, where he died.

He is survived by his daughter Mary of York and by his son Mark of this city. His remains were brought here for burial, the funeral taking place from St. Mary's church Saturday, February 24.

Mr. Sweeney was at various times owner of real estate in this county, at one time owning the Henry Westemeyer farm northeast of town and at another the corner where Albert Klatt's business block now stands. He was a good man and the older generation of this community, who knew him well, attest his worth.

Austie Smith

OSAGE Austie Smith, age 80, of Osage, died Wednesday, August 6, 2003, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage.

The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage is in charge of the arrangements.

Gloria Pat Schwartzkopf

Gloria Pat Schwartzkopf, 69, a resident of 1608 Missouri Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services for Pat Schwartzkopf will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. David Kramer, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nashua, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday.

Marilyn J. Hinrichsen

LAKE SUMMERSET Marilyn June Hinrichsen, 73, died Tuesday evening, Aug. 12., 2003. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Durand United Methodist Church in Durand, Ill., with the Reverend Dr. John Alan Boryk officiating.

McCorkle Funeral Home, 1-800-213-7070, assisted the family with arrangements.

John Nicholas ESCHWEILER

John Nicholas ESCHWEILER was born icon in Euskirchen, Germany June 21,1853. At the age of 12, he came with his parents to America, and settled in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1882, he moved to Mitchell County, Iowa, where he resided until the time of his death which occurred Jan 27, 1923, aged 70 years, 7 months and 6 days.

In 1877, he was united in marriage to Maggie GERHARTZ, at Stacyville, Iowa. To this union ten children were born, two of whom died in infancy, and Mrs. Katie DREIS, who preceded him in death, Oct 24,1922.

Those who are left to mourn his passing beside his wife are: Mrs. Clara STOUTH, of Faribault, MN; John C. of New Hampton, IA; Joseph of Bonair, Mrs. Lizzie CLEWETT, Will, Herbert and Agatha all of Riceville, three brothers, Joe of New Haven, Henry of Elma, Peter of Home City, Kansas and eight grand children, beside a host of friends.

Mr. ESCHWEILER had been a patient sufferer for some months and on January 27,1923, God called him to his eternal reward. He had a cheerful disposition and was always glad to meet his neighbors and friends who with the family will miss him.

Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church, January 29, conducted by Fr. J.J. O’BRIEN and burial was made in Calvary Cemetery.

LAWRENCE GANSER, 65 Dies in Florida Home
Died January 31, 1979

Stacyville-- Lawrence GANSER, a native of this area, died of a heart attack in his home at Merritt Island, Florida. He was found by neighbors who became suspicious when they did not see him for two days watering his outdoor plants.

He was a retired Air Force Master Sergeant, after spending 20 years, between 1935 and 1955 in service. During his retirement, he lived four years in Milwaukee and the remainder of the time until his death, at Merritt Island, Florida.

He is survived by two brothers, Maurice of Milwaukee and Gerald of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sisters, Mrs. Ray EICHHORST (Mary) of Cape Canaveral, Florida and Mrs. Pauline VAN BREE of Racine,WI; also 11 nieces and nephews.

He was born icon in Stacyville, IA August 10,1913, the son of Hillard and Anna (BROST) GANSER and attended schools here.

Funeral services and burial were held Saturday Feb 3 at Merritt Island, Florida.

Ned Chambers

Ned Robert Chambers, age 85, of Hemet, Calif., died Saturday, December 20, 2003, at his Hemet, Calif. home. Mr. Chambers had worked for Nelson Machinery as a mechanic for 25 years. He served in the Army during World War II. He has lived in Hemet since 1955 and was a member of Hemet Christian Assembly Church.

Arrangements are being handled by Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory, 1501 W. Florida Ave., Hemet, Calif.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2003, at Hemet Christian Assembly Chruch. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

Ned is survived by his son, Paul R. Chambers of Hemet, Calif.; his daughters Janet Dicus, of Hemet, Calif., and Sheila Stephenson, of Hemet, Calif.; his brothers Forrest Chambers of Charles City, Raymond Chambers of Charles City, Freeman Chambers, of Colorado; his sisters Elizabeth Starr, of Charles City, and Virginia Tuder, of Charles City; and numerous grandchildren.

Gustav Paul DREWELOW

On Friday morning at 6 o'clock occurred the death of Gustav Paul DREWELOW, one of the county's aged and highly respected citizens.

Mr. DREWELOW was born icon April 8, 1838 , at New Zattan, Braubeubourg, Germany. Here he lived until eighteen years of age when he came to America, settling in Chickasaw County, where he has since made his home. In 1858 he was married icon to Augusta DREWELOW, to which union eight children were born, five of whom are still living: Herman, Gustav, Fred, Albert and Mrs. Henry HEIDECKER, all of this county. His good wife passed to the next world on June 11, 1901.
The deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis about two months ago, from which he gradually declined, life taking its departure on Friday morning. The funeral was held on Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran church conducted by Rev. FRITCHEL and burial in Graceland Cemetery.

Sympathy is extended to the ones mourning the death of this good old father and splendid citizen.

William SCHOENFELD

William Frederick SCHOENFELD was born icon in Province Posen, Germany, Jan. 28, 1858. There he was brought up in a Christian home and received a thorough religious education. When a boy of 11 years, he came with his parents to America, and settled at Beaver Dam, Wis. After 3 years they moved to Ionia and he has lived in this vicinity ever since.

On Oct. 11, 1884, he was married icon to Mary ERION of Alta Vista, starting housekeeping immediately on his farm 2 1/2 miles southeast of Ionia, where they enjoyed farm life for 33 years.

In 1917 they decided to retire from active farming and enjoy a well-deserved rest. A beautiful home on the south edge of Ionia was built, where they resided until his death.

About a year ago Mr. SCHOENFELD was afflicted with a heart ailment which affected his entire organism. Three months ago he was confined to his bed, gradually growing weaker until on Feb. 5, 1937, at the age of 79 years, 8 days, the Lord called him home.

Mr. SCHOENFELD has been a member of the Evangelical Church all his life, living up to its teachings and always keeping up the family worship in his home. He was known as an ambitious, untiring worker, ever honest and reliable, always neighborly and well experienced. He leaves to mourn his lifelong companion of 52 wedded years and six children: Mrs. Julia GROVE, New Hampton. Louis, Ionia; Mrs. Minnie KILLEBREW, Nebo, Ill.; Mrs. Elda McCOLLUM, New Hampton, and Edward and Frederick of Nashua; also two sisters, Mrs. Carrie SCHURZ of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Emma SMITH of Ulm, Minn., and one brother, Theodore of Waterloo, 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m Monday at the Congregational Church, Ionia, burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Casket beareres were eight grandsons, Bert SCHOENFELD, Laurence, Roy, Glenn, Lynn, Charles, Grant, and Warren GROVE. Rev. Artz of Charles City officiated, assisted by Rev. Halbert of Ionia.

Arlene Menzie

Arlene B. Menzie, 79, formerly of 1212 E. St., Charles City, died Wednesday afternoon (December 17, 2003) at her current home, located at 112 Sunland Way in Forest City. She had been living with her daughter and son-in-law for the past few years.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., in Charles City with Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will take place in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City with military graveside services provided by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to the Charles City American Legion Auxiliary or the American Cancer Society.

Arlene Blanche Menzie was born icon January 30, 1924 in rural Boyd, IA, to Theodore J. and Ida (Denner) Wilhelms. She was the first child of two daughters born icon to her parents and lived in Boyd and New Hampton prior to moving to Charles City during her Jr. High School years. She attended attended and graduated from Charles City High School in 1942.

Following high school, Arlene was inducted into the United States Army (Womens Army Corp) on May 22, 1943 and served her country during WWII as a medical technician. After honorably and faithfully serving her country, Arlene was formally discharged from her military duties on February 18, 1946.

Arlene lived most of her life in the Charles City area and was employed by Oliver Corp. in Charles City, where she met her future husband, Brice C. Menzie. On January 12, 1946 the couple was united in marriage in Mason City. They enjoyed traveling together to various vacation spots and especially treasured a trip to Pennsylvania to visit her aunts. Brice and Arlene became the proud parents of two daughters.

In 1956, Arlene chose to become a "stay at home Mom." She did, however, remain very active at school as a room mom and with the local P.T.A., serving as a past president.

Arlene was a strong-willed woman who was a devoted wife and nurturing mother. She thoroughly enjoyed Christmas shopping and preparing for the holidays. Her family members recall that she baked wonderful pecan pies along with large, delicious dinners. In her later years, Arlene was content to have others "wait on her" as she favored eating meals in restaurants or having her family members prepare the food. Arlene and her family looked forward to Friday evenings as those nights were set aside as a pizza party. Her grandchildren remember that their grandmother had a sweet tooth for Snickers candy bars and ice-cream sandwiches and that Arlene possessed a great sense of humor, along with occasional teasing.

Some of Arlenes other favorite interests and activities included flower gardening and watching any type of sports on television. She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. She also found great pleasure in her three card clubs, playing euchre, 500 and canasta. Arlene loved visiting Las Vegas and the games of chance, even if only at the local American Legion and Moose Lodge, playing bingo.

Arlene was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, WELCA, the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, AFLCIO-Womens Auxiliary and Heritage Club. She assisted in serving on various dinner committees and remaining active within her church.

Arlene will be missed dearly by all who have shared in her life. She is survived by her two daughters, Sue Kraus and her husband, Larry of Mason City and Donna Bindel and her husband, Richard of Forest City; one sister, Lois Hobert and her husband, Vernon of Charles City; one granddaughter, Melanie Leber of Des Moines; one grandson, Scott Leber of Ankeny; one great-grandson, Brandon Leber of Des Moines; five step-granddaughters, Kim Kraus and Kari Kraus of Mason City, Amy Purdum of Burlington, Apryl Green of Augusta, Kan. and Beth Bindel of Cedar Falls; two step-grandsons, Kevin Kraus of Northwood and Sam Bindel of Ft. Riley, Kan. She will also be sadly missed by eight step-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Arlene in death is her husband, Brice C. Menzie in 1990, her parents, Theodore and Ida and her sister-in-law, Wilma DeHaven in 2002.

Ryan David Hoffman

Ryan David Hoffman, infant son of David and Jackie (Wilson) Hoffman, was stillborn on Wednesday, December 10, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Along with his parents Ryan is survived by, a twin sister, Rachel; a 3 year old sister, Rebecca; and a brother, Tyler; paternal grandparents, Darrell and Jennie Ross of Charles City; maternal grandparents, Robert and Frances Wilson of Charles City; paternal great grandmother, Florene Royal Johnson of Charles City; maternal great grandmother, Arlene Wilson of Charles City; several aunts and uncles; and seven cousins.

Ryan was preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents, George Royal and Lee and Marie Ross; and maternal great grandparents Glen Wilson and Roy and Clare Alden.

The Hauser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary SWEENEY

Mrs. Mary SWEENEY Has Passed to Great Beyond, Age 84:
Is Survived by Her Husband and Two Daughters and Two Sons. Funeral Was Held Tuesday.

The death of Mrs. Mark SWEENEY, aged 84 years, occurred at her home in this city at 5 p.m., Sunday, October 21, 1934. Her death came as a relief from a lingering illness with which she had been afflicted for a number of years. Final rites were conducted for the deceased at 7 a.m. Tuesday, October 23 at St. Joseph's Church in this city, Very Reverend Thomas J. Dowling, pastor, conducted the services and interment was made in Calvary Cemetery here.

The following acted as pallbearers: A.A. HUGHES, J.F. TIERNAN, C.D. GLEASON, J.C. TIERNEY, R.H. SMITH and W.H. SMITH.

Mrs. SWEENEY was born icon Mary McGuin [McGuill] on October 5, 1850, in Dandalk, [Dundalk] Ireland. She came to the United States in 1868 and settled in Dunmor [Dunmore], Pennsylvania. On August 19, 1876, she was happily united in marriage to Mr. Mark SWEENEY at Scranton, Pennsylvania and several years later the couple moved to New Hampton, Iowa, which has since been their home.

To this union seven children were born. One daughter and two sons preceded their mother in death. Besides the father, two daughters, Mrs. Lucy SOHRT of New Hampton, Mrs. Margaret SHEA of Marty, South Dakota, two sons, John SWEENEY of Parkston, South Dakota, Charles SWEENEY of New Hampton, also seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren survive.

The death of Mrs. SWEENEY removes one of the older women of this community. A long period of illness was peacefully closed in death, and as a life long and devoted Catholic, she met her Creator with true resignation. She was a member of the Rosary Society. However, her passing is a sad and hard blow to the family and friends for which she was ever a splendid wife and mother and a good Christian woman. We join the friends of the SWEENEY family in extending our sincerest and most heartfelt sympathy in their sorrow.
