DR JOHN JACOB SHIRK
Publication: Uncertain, but perhaps again from the NASHUA REPORTER

Again the funeral bell tolls and another of Nashua's honored and respected citizens passed to his long home.

Dr John J. SHIRK was born icon in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania on Feb.17, 1826, and died at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, April 10, aged 81 years, 2 months, and 3 days, death resulting from Bright's disease and heart trouble.

In the early fifties, the deceased moved to Freeport, Illinois where he remained a couple of years and then moved to Old Chickasaw. After six years residence here he returned to Freeport for a time but for the past twenty-eight years he and his family have resided in Nashua.

During the war, Dr. SHIRK was enlisted as a veterinary surgeon and continued in the profession after returning home until forced by illness to abandon his profession.

On May 7, 1849 he was united in marriage to Miss Phoebe STOCKS and to this union twelve children were born icon of whom nine survive, beside the aged companion to cherish the memory of a kind and indulgent parent.

During our acquaintance with Dr SHIRK we had grown to have a deep respect for him. He was always pleasant to meet and his bright, cheery smile showed a heart full of love and warmth.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.W. SMITH from the M. E. Church Monday afternoon and internment was made at Greenwood Cemetery. The members of Geo. W.S. Dodge Post and the Relief corps attended in a body and we do not remember of ever seeing more of the veterans together on a similar occasion - certainly a mark of deep respect. The floral tributes were many and beautiful.

DEATH OF ANDREW A. GORDON
Pioneer of Jacksonville Township Dies From Stroke of Paralysis

Last Friday at his home in Jacksonville Township occurred the death of Mr Andrew A. GORDON, aged 78 years, 11 months and 19 days.

On the 9th of January Mr GORDON suffered a stroke of paralysis, and lingered in a suffering condition for eleven days before the final summons came to join his Redeemer. Though unable to move or converse, yet his mind remained clear and active till the last day. During his illness it was apparent to the watchers at this bedside that his mind was dwelling upon his religion which had been a firm faith and practice with him during his long life. He passed away in the full assurance of a blessed resurrection and the joys of eternal life.

Andrew A. GORDON was born icon in Norway Feb 1, 1827, and in his native land was married icon to Miss Carrie YLVISAKER in 1853. Five years later they came to America and settled in Dane County Wis., where they lived ten years and then came to Chickasaw County and settled on the farm which continued to be his home until he died.

He is survived by his aged wife and a daughter, Mrs George OTTESON. His only son, the late John A. GORDON, met death in a tragic way in June 1904, from paralysis, supposed to have resulted from a fall from a horse. He also leaves thirteen grandchildren, five in the family of Mr and Mrs George OTTESON and eight in the family of his late son.

This good man, whose death is so much mourned, found his life work in the cares and duties of home and in the discharging of his religious duties. He, as much or more than any other man, was the builder of the Crane Creek congregation of the United Norwegian Lutheran Church. He was always foremost in every good work and as a neighbor he had acted the good Samaritan in innumerable instances. He never refused help to one in distress. He was fortunate in his finances and left a large property. It may truly be said of him, he was one of God’s noblemen, walking this earthly stage uprightly before God and man, and quitting it in firm hope of the rewards which are promised those who are faithful unto death.

The funeral was held from the Crane Creek Church on Monday, and all that was mortal of the patriarch was laid to rest in the parish cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Sarah JOHNSTON LEWIS
Publication: New Hampton Newspaper
Publication Date: Apr 1915

A FINE OLD MOTHER HAS FALLEN
Mrs. Samuel Lewis Fell Asleep Thursday, April 8th, in the 88th Year of Her Age

Miss Sarah JOHNSTON was born icon in Indiana, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, June 1st, 1827, and died at her home in New Hampton, Chickasaw Co., Iowa, Thursday morning, April 8th 1915.

January 6th 1848, she gave her hand in marriage to Samuel LEWIS at her home in the place of her birth. They continued to reside there until 1866, when they came west and settled in New Hampton where they continued to reside until the Master called first the husband and now the wife to come up higher.

Eleven children came to this home of whom six survive the mother. They are William J., of Medalia, California; Mary A. (now the wife of Mr. Harry JACKSON) of St. Paul; James F., of Rockford, Illinois; Robert A., John F. and Ida M. (now Mrs. Fred SOHN of this city.)

Thus you see this good mother had her full share of sorrow which she bore with a fortitude born icon of a living faith in the Christ of the New Testament, whom she served with loving cheerfulness and steadfast faith all through life.

In her girlhood days, she gave her heart to God and united with the United Presbyterian Church and always had a word of cheer, positive testimony to give for Him whom she adored and whose tender teachings she believed with all her heart.

Devoted to her husband, she was always by his side either when the sighing winds of affliction beat upon them or when the soft breathings of Divine love cheered them in their home or business.

Her children were her special care and she gave of her love and her strength in full measure; in sickness or health she was with them in heart and life and she had the mother love for her large family that held them steady to the path of rectitude and made each of them believe in their mother's God.

A great woman has fallen, full of years and a plentitude of graces that adorn character and live long after the body has been laid away to slumber in waiting for the call of Him who said "I am the resurrection and the life."

The funeral was held Saturday from the home, Rev. W.L. Anderson conducted the services and the interment was in the Graceland Cemetery beside the husband who made the journey through life with her.

It can truthfully be said of this noble woman: "She hath done what she could" and life's close is the morning of a blessed life in the realms of a brighter world.
