Rheta Southwick

Rheta Frances Southwick, 81, of Riverside, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born July 10, 1920, in North Liberty, she was the daughter of Arthur and Ethel Buchwalter Herring. She married Dale W. Southwick in 1944, in Kahoka, Mo. He died in 1987.
Mrs. Southwick was a lifelong resident of Riverside. She worked as a beautician in the community for more than 50 years and was owner/operator of Rheta's Beauty Salon.

She was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, was an avid gardener and dearly loved her children.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Wilkerson of Mediapolis; two sons, Ronald Southwick of North Liberty and Richard Southwick of Riverside; three granddaughters; one brother, Donald Herring of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Olive Mitchell of Washington, Iowa.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

The funeral for Mrs. Southwick was July 19 at Riverside United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sung Joon Park officiating. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

A memorial was established.

Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home in Riverside was in charge of arrangements.

Freda Wyrick

Freda B. Wyrick, 77, of Keokuk, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Keokuk Area Hospital.

Born May 24, 1924, in Keokuk, she was the daughter of George E. and Bertha V. Prouse Lovell. On April 25, 1942, she married Howard L. Wyrick in Canton, Mo.
Mrs. Wyrick was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Keokuk. She enjoyed her aquasize classes at the Y and was a very caring person, always helping others.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ronald L. Wyrick of Kahoka, Mo., and William E. Wyrick of Bellingham, Wash.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Katie Baugher of Macomb, Ill.; and one brother, Ray Lovell of Keokuk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one uncle.

Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Wyrick will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vigen Memorial Home, with the Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial will be in Sand Cemetery in St. Francisville, Mo.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.

Melinda Householder

Melinda M. Householder, 51, of Warsaw, Ill., died at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at her home. Arrangements are pending at Lamporte Funeral Home in Warsaw.

Sarah Marland

Sarah E. Marland, 97, of Burlington, died at 3:15 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at her home.

Born July 15, 1907, in South Boston, Mass., she was the daughter of Harry C. and Samantha J. Wallace Hayes. In 1935, she married James A. Marland Sr., in Rhode Island. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Marland was a dietitian in Massachusetts. She also provided care for people with mental handicaps.

She was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2275 in El Cajon, Calif., and an honorary member of ABWA. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed watching soap operas. She was of the Episcopalian faith.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Sammet and Harry "Chet" Marland, both of Burlington, and James A. Marland Jr., of West Burlington; two daughters, Harriet "Becky" Stockton and Nancy Myers, both of Burlington; 20 grandchildren; 32 great–grandchildren; 10 great–great–grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, two brothers, two sisters, one grandson and one great–grandson.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1301 Aetna, Burlington. Cremation has been accorded.

A memorial service for Mrs. Marland will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at 1301 Aetna, with the Rev. Kendall Adams officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Greenwood Memorial Park in San Diego.

A memorial has been established.

Prugh Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Dale Frank

Dale E. Frank, 79, of Burlington, died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Knoxville.

The graveside service for Mr. Frank will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery , with military rites by VFW Post 10102.

Forrest Benjamin

Forrest H. Benjamin, 84, of Donnellson, died at 6:45 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2001, at Donnellson Health Center.

Born July 9, 1916, in Donnellson, he was the son of Herbert W. and Virgil M. Huff Benjamin. He married Nedra May Hopp on May 8, 1943, in Farmington. She died Dec. 17, 1973.
Mr. Benjamin was a 1935 graduate of Fort Madison High School and a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a gunner on the USS Caperton. He was a farmer and a lifelong resident of the Donnellson area.

He was a Member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington and Gillaspy-Moodie American Legion Post 474 in Donnellson and served as chairman of the Lee County Soldiers Relief Committee from 1968 to 1974. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid golfer and member of Green Acres Country Club in Donnellson.

Survivors include one son, Bill Benjamin of Donnellson; three daughters, Mary Adkins of Donnellson, Joann Weeks of Ainsworth and Jane Benjamin of Eugene, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, two brothers and one sister.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hofbauer Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Benjamin will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington, with the Rev. David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery in Keokuk.

A memorial has been established for his church. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Glenn Meek

Glenn David Meek, 46, of Burlington, died at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 22, 1955, in Kingslynn, England, he was the son of Howard Richard and Rose Olive Playle Meek.
Mr. Meek worked as a machinist for Federal Mogul.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading.

Survivors include three daughters, Andrea Meek of Iowa City and Adrienne and Amber Meek, both of Burlington; two grandchildren; his parents of Des Moines; two brothers, Vincent Meek of Des Moines and Daniel Meek of Beera, Ohio; and two sisters, Valerie Mills of Phoenix and Lorraine Kinney of Des Moines.

There will be no visitation or service.

Marilyn Wheeler

Marilyn Louella Wheeler, 74, of Oak Lane Nursing & Rehab in Stronghurst, Ill., formerly of Burlington, died at 7:30 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2001, at Oak Lane.

Born Sept. 18, 1926, in Livonia, Mo., she was the daughter of Floyd and Velma Wright Wheeler.
Miss Wheeler was a factory worker at Midwest Biscuit and Campbell Chain and was an assistant at Jenny Coulter Daycare.

She was of the Protestant faith. She enjoyed music and spending time with her brothers, sisters and family.

Survivors include five sisters, Porteous "Joy" Laue, Wanda Houston, Sue Ives and Donna Krieger, all of Burlington, and Laura Marshall of Stronghurst, Ill.; three brothers, Jack and Ronald Wheeler, both of Burlington, and Huey Wheeler of Brighton; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday in Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The funeral for Miss Wheeler will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery , with the Rev. John B. Deal officiating.

A memorial has been established.

Nolan Green

Nolan Reece Green, infant son of Steven and Sarah Lacy Green of Blue Springs, Mo., died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born April 23, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs.
Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Blue Springs, Mo.

Survivors include his parents; one sister, Rachel Green, at home; his paternal grandparents, George and Frances Green of Burlington; and his maternal grandparents, R.C. and Leah Lacy of Harrisonville, Mo.

The funeral for Nolan Green will be at 10:30 a.m. today at the church. Private burial will be in Freeman Cemetery , Freeman, Mo.

Memorials have been established for Children's Mercy Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City, 1100 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO 64105.

Atkinson Funeral Home in Harrisonville, Mo., is in charge of arrangements.

Arlene Zern

Arlene B. Zern, 79, of Burlington, died at 10:49 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Aug. 7, 1922, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Gifford K. and Ida Lloyd Brown. She married George Zern on Aug. 16, 1953, in Burlington.
Mrs. Zern was a lifelong resident of Burlington. She worked as an inspector at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 29 years, retiring in 1984.

She bowled for more than 45 years in the Burlington Bowling Association. She was awarded the Burlington Women's Bowling Association Merit Award in 1995, and was a certified junior bowlers coach for 15 years. Prior to bowling, Arlene was a professional roller skater and judge.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Michael Zern of Burlington; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Olive Hickson of Burlington and Wandalou Scheitlin of Arvada, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesday in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The graveside funeral service for Mrs. Zern will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Aspen Grove Cemetery , with the Revs. Forrest and Sue Krummel officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Junior Bowler Program.

Carl St. Ores

Carl Edwin St. Ores, 79, of 2217 Avenue G, Fort Madison, died at 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Montrose Health Care Center in Montrose.

Born July 20, 1922, in New Boston, Ill., he was the son of Walter and Sarah Bogess St. Ores. He married Carol Bauman on April 19, 1952. He later married Lois Maree Wilson on April 18, 1992, in Moline, Ill.
Mr. St. Ores was a salesman for Sherwin-Williams Co.

He was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Denise Marie St. Ores of Jacksonville, Fla., Debbie Moneyhan of Yulee, Fla., and Jacqueline Rae Larson of Jackson, Wyo.; one son, Scott St. Ores of Yulee, Fla.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nine stepchildren; 20 step-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

His body has been cremated.

There will be no visitation or service.

A memorial has been established. Contributions may be left at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison.
