He graduated from Grant High School in 1925 and Coe College in 1929. His teacher's certificate in Latin and Speech gave way to 40 years of service in the traffic departments of the Killian Co. and the Quaker Oats Co. in Cedar Rapids. He also worked with local theater groups, including the Cedar Rapids Community Theater. He married Emma Elliott in 1955, she died in 1991. He married Lorraine Brown in 1998. Although he might be remembered as a clown, Fred always considered himself a magician first. His love for magic evolved into the character of 'Mombo the Clown' with the 'Dr. Max Show', local weekdays TV program, 'Entertaining the Kiddies' from 1960 to 1981. Joyfully and charitably he also maintained a full schedule of appearances at schools, hospitals, shopping malls, birthday parties, churches, fairs and groups such as Cub Scouts and Bluebirds.
