Beulah L. Couch, 89, of 2600 E Ave NE, died Thursday, February 28, 2002, in Northbrook Manor Care Center following a long illness. Services at 10 AM Monday in First Lutheran Church. Rev. Daniel Kolander will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday and at the church after 9 AM on Monday.
Survivors include her husband Marvin, two sons Gary of Cedar Rapids, and Alan and wife Tami of Westminster, Colorado, a good friend Carolyn Couch of Cedar Rapids, a sister Geneva Rienhart of Oketo, Kansas, 5 grandchildren, Kevin Couch and wife Jennifer and Chris Couch all of Appleton, Wisconsin, Amanda Couch of Denver, Colorado, and Wesley and Nick Couch of Westminster, Colorado, four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Mikaila, and Isaiah of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Olivia Gresham of Denver, Colorado. Also survived by two sisters in law, Mary Doss of Trenton, Missouri and Grace Couch of Redfield, California, and a brother-in-law Maynard Couch and wife Pat of Fallbrook, California.
Beulah was born September 8, 1912 in Home City, Kansas to August and Mary Breunsbach. She married Marvin W. Couch on July 7, 1936 in Chillicothe, Missouri. She graduated from the Chillicothe Business College and started the first catalog center for Montgomery Wards in Chillicothe. After moving to Cedar Rapids she managed the piece goods department for Montgomery Wards. She then became manager of the cafeterias first at Franklin and then Taft Middle Schools. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she ran the communion group and the shut-in program for many years. After many years of traveling here and abroad she fell and broke her ankle in 1999. This slowed her up quite a bit, to try to enjoy the rest of her golden years.
Now mom can rest in peace.

Melree A. Arnold, 81, of Weatherby Lake, Missouri, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Marion, died Friday, February 28, 2002 in St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri following a sudden illness. Services at 1 PM Monday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 2 to 5 PM on Sunday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Monday.
Survivors include her son Don Arnold and wife Georgina of Weatherby Lake, Missouri, two grandchildren Kenneth Arnold of Springhill, Kansas and Tammy Lietzau of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, six great-grandchildren, four sisters Iris Jackson of North Bend, Oregon, Doreen Robinson of San Diego, California, Bonnie Anderson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Ardith Withers of Bellingham, Washington.
Melree was born December 17, 1920 in Everett, Washington to Don and Pearl Noland. She married Kenneth Arnold in 1942 in Bethany, Missouri. He died in 1963. She proudly worked as a printer for Frank Magid and Associates for over 25 years. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, and sewing. She was a lifelong Presbyterian Church member.

Paul E. Power

Paul E. Power, 73, of 404 Teakwood Lane, NE, formerly of Manchester, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center following a long illness. Memorial services at 3 PM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Jim Bauer of the Finchford Community Bible Church will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM on Monday.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, two sons Stephen of Cedar Rapids, and Brian and wife Michelle of Janesville, three daughters Pamela Thomas and husband Charles of Marion, Barbara Wheeler and husband Raymond of Cedar Falls, and Laurie Tipton and husband Gary of Cedar Rapids, a brother Glen Power of California, and eleven grandchildren, Tara Thomas, Tanya Otting, David Tipton, Julie Tipton, Tyrone Power, Nathan Power, Alissa Power, Amanda Wheeler, Jason Wheeler, Brianne and Jonathan Power, a brother in law John Hogan of Manchester, and a sister in law Eunice Power of Texas. He was preceded in death by two sisters Bernice Noyes and Virginia Hogan, and a brother Gene Power.
Paul was born August 23, 1928 in Manchester, Iowa to McKinley H. and Anna M. Helmerich Power. He married Patricia J. Reiter on July 1, 1946 in Manchester. Paul was a toolmaker at Rockwell-Collins for 36 years retiring in 1984.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship Club of Cedar Rapids.

Basil L. Harris Sr.

Basil L. 'Big Rock' Harris Sr., 81, of 1328 First ST. SW, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, in S. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Services with military honors at 10 AM Tuesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Gary Sneller of Cedar Christian Church officiating. Burial in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Monday and at the chapel after 9 AM on Tuesday.
Survivors include a son Basil Jr. of Cedar Rapids, three daughters Mary Miller and husband Larry of Atkins, Bonnie Fencl of Solon, and Grace Clinton and John Gordinier of Cedar Rapids, a sister Iris Waddilove and a brother Thurman Harris both of Cedar Rapids, fourteen grandchildren and thirty-four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers Archie, Arden, and Charles Jr., a sister Zelma Kasner, and three grandchildren, Richard Hathaway, and Christopher and Christine Fencl.
Basil was born March 21, 1920 in Blythedale, Missouri to Charles and Grace Moore Harris. He married Pearl N. Parmer on July 26, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. She died May 2, 1998. Basil was a foreman and worked in the stockroom at Cherry-Burrell for over 40 years. He was a member of Cedar Christian Church, U.A.W. Local 1024 where he had served as Vice President, Chief Steward, and on the negotiating team. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids softball Hall of Fame and had played fast pitch and slow pitch for several years. He served in the US Army during WW II. He enjoyed sports with his grandchildren.
Basil was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Basil's family would like to thank Dr. Charles Pruchno and the St. Luke's Staff on the 4th and 5th floors and intensive care for their special care of Basil.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Don A. Cook

Don A. Cook, 65, of 501 2nd Ave. Coggon, died Wed. March 6, 2002 at his home of cancer. Memorial services at 1 PM on Friday at the Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories where friends may call after Noon on Friday. Rev. Ron Lewis will officiate. There will be a time of fellowship at the Coggon Legion Hall from 4 to 8 PM on Friday. Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Barb, a son, Chris and his wife, Julie, two daughters, Dawn Dvorak and husband, Rod, all of Walker and Jenny Michael and her husband, Daryl of Newton, and a sister, Vonda Anderson of Delhi. Also survived by ten grandchildren, Tanner and Mason Cook, David, Daniel and Nicholas Michael, Emily Cook, Rachel Richardson, Nolan, Chase and Josey Dvorak, a daughter in law, Diane Cook Richardson and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Robb.
Don was born on March 25, 1936 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ralph and Irma Long Cook. Don graduated from High School in Alburnett and married Barbara A. Boddicker there on June 9, 1957. Don owned and operated Cook's Barber Shop in Coggon for 44 years. He was a member of Meadowview Country Club in Central City, Coggon Lions Club, North Linn Fish and Game and the Coggon Fire Dept. Don truly loved his work, he enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and many friends. In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Don's name.

Philip B. Martin

Philip B. Martin 61, of 4401 Dunn Ave, Marion, formerly of Marshalltown died Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services with military honors Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. Francis Griffeth will officiate. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the chapel after 10 AM on Wednesday.
Survivors include his wife Mary, two sons Philip Martin Jr. and wife Angie, and Douglas both of Minneapolis, a daughter Lynn Martin also of Minneapolis, and a sister Jeannette Rollins of Phoenix, Arizona, two grandchildren, Kailee and Mackenzie Martin, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Philip was born January 28, 1941 in Ranger, Texas to Callan and Marjorie Phillips Martin. He married Mary Rolle on December 26, 1964 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam War Veteran and loved to play golf.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Lylo Ernest Tomkins

Lylo Ernest Tomkins, 80, of Cedar Rapids, residing at Crestview Acres Care Center, died Sunday morning, March 10, 2002, in St. Luke's Hospital following a lengthy illness. Services at 1 PM Wednesday in Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories. Rev. William Harnish will officiate. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 8 PM on Tuesday and at the chapel after 12:30 PM on Wednesday.
Survivors include two sons James and wife Karen, and Martin and wife Jan, two sisters, Freda Rabik and husband Stanley, and Lucy Chmelicek and husband Leonard all of Cedar Rapids, a sister-in-law Wava Tomkins of Peoria, Arizona, and three grandchildren David Edwards, Beverly Juhl, and Sue Flint, and three great-grandchildren. Lylo was preceded in death by his parents Archie and Edna Tomkins, three brothers Vernon, Merle, and Marvin, three sisters Mildred V. Prichard, Fern Melton, and Ruth Miller, and his beloved wife Dorothy A. Tomkins who died June 27, 1998.
Lylo was born October 4, 1921 in Elemendaro Township in Lyon County, Kansas. He was a veteran of World War II where he proudly served his country in Europe, in the Army. He married the former Dorothy Angela Aksamit on December 4, 1946, in Pueblo, Colorado. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids shortly thereafter. Lylo was a loving family man and father. He took a special interest in his sons and played games with them and their friends in the neighborhood, their home was a safe haven for the neighborhood children. Lylo took great pride in the poetry he enjoyed writing, loved to watch softball at Ellis Park, rode his bike everywhere, and was an expert checker player. The family attended Bethany Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids.
Lylo worked at Nutrena Mills for 22 and a half years and then at St. Luke's Hospital for 15 years.
Lylo and Dorothy was such a loving couple and they will always be remembered, loved, and greatly missed.
A memorial fund has been established.

Franz D. Sprecher
October 16, 1915 - March 10, 2002

Franz D. (Spreck) Sprecher, 86, of Village Place At Marion, died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center following an extended illness. Cremation was held. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Village Place. Inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park cemetery . Arrangements by the Cedar Memorial Funeral Home.
Surviving besides his wife Beryl, is a son, Dennis (Berneda) Sprecher of Salt Lake City, Utah and a daughter. Also surviving is a sister, Luella Mills of Vero Beach, Florida, 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
He was born October 16, 1915 in Ft. Dodge to Hans and Nellie (Muggins) Sprecher and was married to Beryl Walterick on October 16, 1936 in Clarion.
He had been in the printing business in numerous states and had retired from the Mohawk Carpet Company. He was a member and past president of the Lion’s Club and the Senior Men’s Golf Association and served in the U.S. Navy
